As they proceeded to the common, Slimer did something that surprised all the others except for Futura. He kept staring at Jessica. That seemed really odd to everyone else, as they felt it should be much more likely that he’d pay a great deal of attention to someone from the New York team, particularly Ray.
Finally, once they’d reached the fountain in the common, Slimer floated over to her and hugged her tightly, planting a loving kiss on heeek.eek. “Thank you, Jessica for letting me stay with you after what happened to Ray. I’ve never forgotten how you took me in. I would have never been able to deal with my grief over Ray’s passing if you hadn’t been there to help me through it. Most people wouldn’t have had enough strength to console someone else while dealing with their own grief. Those last few years when it was just me and you left were some of the best of my afterlife. I never told you that while I had the chance. I wanted to tell you now.”
Then he floated off to tell Ray a joke that one of the students had told him about 200 years earlier. Ray hadn’t heard what he’d said to Jessica. In fact, none of the others had heard it. They were all laughing at Slimer’s very dirty joke. So when Jessica suddenly stopped walking, frozen in horror, no one even noticed.
But they noticed when she began to bawl.
“NOOOOOO!!!” she cried. “WHHHHYYY?????”
“Jessica?” Jake ran over to his wife and grabbed her by both arms. “What? What’s the matter, Baby? What happened?”
She took one look at him, realized that she would one day have to attend his funeral, and cried so hard, she was coughing. “I don’t . . . *cough* . . . want . . . *cough* . . .”
“What don’t you want? Futura help! What’s wrong with her?”
”I don’t know? Jessica, sweetie, what happened?”
“Come on Jess,” Peter said. “Tell us what happened.”
Jessica looked at Peter, looked at the others, and bawled even harder. “I can’t! I can’t do it! I can’t be the last one! I won’t lose you all!” She looked at Jake and fell into his arms, crying on his shoulder. Futura walked over and rubbed her head, just in time to hear her say, “I can’t bury you, Jake!”
“Bury me? What the hell are you talking about? Jess, I’m not going anywhere.”
Futura’s eyes got huge, and then she turned on Slimer in a rage. “You didn’t!”
He looked at her down his nose, as if her yelling at him was an act of the worst impropriety. “Explain yourself, young lady!” he demanded.
“You told her, didn’t you?!?”
He looked at Jessica, still crying in her husband’s arms. His eyes became like platters and he slapped both ectoplasmic hands over his mouth. “Oh no! What have I done?” He floated over to Jessica with slimy green tears in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Jess! Don’t cry!”
Futura’s eyes welled up. “How could you, sir? How could you tell her she’d outlive them all?” Everyone else looked at her in shock. Hearing definitive proof of their own mortality was not something they’d been prepared to hear, even though they were long dead by this time, knowing part of the order in which they’d go was very unsettling. A few of the other wives also started crying, as the same thought was on all their minds as they each looked at their spouses: who would bury who?
Futura looked around at the debacle she’d added to and smacked her own forehead. “Be back.”
She disappeared in a burst of light. The others all gathered around Jessica to try to calm her down, but as she looked at each of them, she cried even harder. Jake helped her to sit on the edge of the fountain and she wrapped her arms around herself, as if to shield herself from the horrible torrent of emotions.
“Jessica, please. It’ll be okay.”
“It won’t be okay! How can anything ever be okay again? I can’t live without you!” Jake was at a loss a how how he could calm her down because he knew how he’dl ifl if Slimer had told him the reverse scenario.
Futura suddenly reappeared carrying a tray with several silver chalices and a small black box. “Good idea, Futura!” Slimer exclaimed. She placed a stealthy finger to her lips so he wouldn’t give this away too.
“Hey Jake, give her one of these. It’ll make her feel better.”
Jake eyed the swirling, pearly liquid inside the chalice. There was writing on the side of the cup. It said, ‘Property of the Derleth School’. The little box had a plaque that read ‘Property of the Martin Institute’. “What’s in the box?”
“Red herring.” He looked at her suspiciously, and she frowned. “Jake Kong, when have I ever given you reason to doubt me? Now give her the damn drink and take one for yourself. Now!” He took one of the chalices and helped Jessica to take a sip. She took the chalice from him and drank it down greedily. He shrugged and grabbed a chalice for himself and drained it. “The rest of you too,” Futura ordered. “Bottoms up.”
They all obeyed and drank the tasty elixir.
“Wow!” Jessica exclaimed. “That was great! Thanks, Futura!” She looked around. “Why am I sitting here? Weren’t we just standing over there?” She pointed to a spot a few feet away.
The others looked around in confusion. Futura put down the tray and said, “Oh good. It worked.”
Egon shook his head to try to clear it. “What worked?”
“These potions. They erasedr mer memory of what happened.”
“What happened?” Jake asked. Then he looked at his wife’s face. “Babe, have you been crying?”
She looked at him like he was crazy. “Of course I haven’t been . . .” She touched her cheeks. They were wet. “ . . . crying? I have been. When . . . ? Futura? What is this?”
Futura sighed as if she didn’t really want to tell them. “Well if you must know, Jessica just had a fall. She slipped in the water around this fountain and fractured her leg.” Jake’s face paled and he immediately knelt to inspect his wife’s leg. “No! No! It’s fine now, see? You can’t even tell it was ever broken.” They couldn’t. Of course, that was because it never had been. She smirked as he plan was set in motion. “And it’s all thanks to your brilliant institute!” she told Kayla, waving the ‘red herring’ under her nose. “And I got the potions to make you all forget the incident from Alice’s school.” She pointed to the engraving on Alice’s chalice. “See? That’s why you’re my idol!” Alice blushed and thanked her.
Peter stared at them for a moment and then rolled his eyes. “Jess, are you all right?”
“Yes, Peter. I don’t even remember being hurt.”
“Okay, then I guess everything’s cool. Thank you, Futura. We’re ready to get back to our little Mission Impossible-to-figure out now.” Futura snorted as she started to gather all the chalices back onto the tray.
Slimer floated over to help her. “I’m sorry about that,” he whispered to her.”
“It’s okay,” she whispered in reply. “And I meant no disrespect, sir.”
“No, you were right. I just . . .”
“No need to explain, sir. I don’t know how I would react if I were reunited with someone I thought I’d never see again.” She looked off into the distance, the same sadness filling her eyes. Slimer looked at her, perplexed. He did not press her on the turn of her mood.
“Hey, Slimer!” Jessica said. “What were you saying to me before I fell? I forgot.”
His head shot up guiltily. He looked at her as benignly as he could muster, smiled, and replied to her. “It wasn’t important, Jess.”
