Eve paces the floor, Fox reading the file for the 20th time. “Eve, you need to quit pacing before you wear a groove in my floor.”
Eve stops and grips the back of the only other chair in the room. “Sorry. I just hate firing people.” She sighs and makes herself relax. “At least this time I know more about the person than I did last time.”
Fox smiles but doesn’t look up from the file. “I’ll be doing the firing since he’s from David’s side of the company. You’re just here as a witness as to what is said. Hailey from HR will be here in a minute.”
Eve steps around the chair and slides down into it. “Gah! I still hate it!” She rubs at her face. “I’ll just be glad when this week is over.”
An older, dark haired woman walks in with a folder under her arm. “Sounds like cold feet to me.” She winks at Eve. “Thinking of backing out?”
“No way!” Eve grins, laughing. “I’m just way overthinking everything right now and worrying when I shouldn’t be.”
“Exactly!” Hailey lays a gentle hand on her shoulder. “So take one problem at a time. The wedding is still a couple of days away. This is now.”
Fox looks up and closes the file. “She has a point.” She slides the file across the desk. “I heard Justin’s family will be in tomorrow.”
“Yeah.” Eve relaxes more. “I’m not sure what all they are planning. He won’t tell me.”
“I’m giving you tomorrow and Friday off.” She holds up a hand to stave off Eve’s protest. “I know what you are thinking and I won’t have any of it. You need to be a hostess to his family and make sure everything is in place.” She sees Eve frown. “And you have a party to get ready for.”
Eve holds her hands up in surrender. “Ok! Ok! I give.”
Fox sees a shadow at her door. “Good. We’re on.”
Eve straightens in her seat, looking over her shoulder. “Yep.”
Eve groans, kicking her heels off as she stumbles into her office. She looks up and sees Justin smiling back at her. “Don’t give me that look. You try to wear heels all day long and see if you don’t kick them off as soon as you can.”He waves her to a seat next to him. “Come here.” She sits down and he grabs a foot, massaging it. “You have a visitor that is waiting for you in the solarium.”
She leans back, closing her eyes as she enjoys the massage. “Do I have to go right now?”
“Nope. You can take a few minutes first.” He switches to her other foot. “So how did it go today?”
“Not bad considering all that had to be done.” She groans as he hits a sore spot. “Fox gave me the next two days off. She thinks I’ll need to be with your family and make sure everything is perfect.”
He chuckles and pats her foot before letting it go. “At least that means you can sleep in. I’m sure you are going to need it.”
“That would be nice.” She picks up her shoes and stands. “I doubt it will happen but it would be nice.”
He follows her out into the hall. “Do you have to be anywhere?”
“No.” She hits the elevator button, frowning. “Not really although I need to finish packing the rest of the apartment.”
“Already taken care of.” He steps into the elevator with her, grinning. “It is the job of the prospective husband to bring his bride’s things to his dwelling. It shows that it is his intention of caring for and protecting her.”
She laughs softly. “So you plan on making Owen do it.”
“Exactly.” He steps out of the elevator and follows her down another hall. “Part of the tradition he agreed to.” He opens the solarium door for her. “It’s just a small part of the tradition he will have to abide by.”
“And what is the rest you will be asking of my brother?” A soft voice echoes down the trail in front of them.
Eve stiffens, knowing that voice well enough not to cross it. She quickly makes her way down the trail until she sees Titania sitting on a bench, staring out the large windows. “My Queen, I did not expect to see you so soon.”
Justin stiffens beside her, realizing who they are speaking to. “And the traditions are only small ones that I am sure he researched ahead of time or he would not have agreed to them.”
Titania pats the spot next to her. “Sit, Little Queen. We have much to discuss.” She waits until Eve is sitting before slightly smiling. “There is much unrest about you among our people. They have divided into two groups, those who will follow you and those who will not. What do you plan on doing about it?”
Eve could feel her eye boring into her in challenge. “Nothing. I did not want to be queen, nor did I ask for it and you know it. I will not force anyone to follow me that doesn’t want to.”
Titania inclines her head and her smile broadens a little more. “I see. And your stallions? Why are they here?”
“My Lady,” Justin coughs slightly to get her attention “that is my doing. Part of our tradition is to bring the bride to her groom with her most prized possession. Even though she doesn’t really own them, they agreed to carry her down the aisle.”
“I see.” Titania chuckles softly. “Then you must be prepared for them to dance, My Dear. It is their way.” She opens her hands and a box appears. “I will tell those who are afraid they are being used that they come willingly and why. That should stave off the unrest. “ She holds out the box to Eve. “This will settle the rest.”
Eve slowly reaches out to take the box. “My Lady, you didn’t have to do anything more.”
Titania’s smile turns genuine. “It is a gift to my brother and his wife.”
Eve opens the box and stares at the handfasting cloth inside in shock. “Is this what I think it is?”
“Yes, your request has been accepted.” Titania takes out the cloth and lays it across Eve’s lap. The Fae ruins stitched on it gleam in the light. “My Lord Husband can be generous at times.”
Eve blinks back tears. “He is very generous , My Queen.”
Titania reaches out and touches her cheek gently. “His reasons are his own that he did not share with me but I did not want you to be surprised when you see him there to give you his blessing.”
“Will you extend to him my happiness and gratitude, My Queen?” One tears slowly slips down her cheek. “This will ease his mind that I do not plan on leaving him, ever.”
“Of course, Little Queen.” Titania lays the cloth back in the box. “I will hold this until it is time for my brother to have it.” He winks at Eve. “It would not do for him to know too soon or he will fret himself. He is already worried enough to be snapping at those around him.”
Eve groans and closes her eyes. “He’s gonna be a treat then when he gets back.”
“One you won’t have to deal with since you won’t be able to see him after Thurs night.” Justin grins. “And even then you’ll only see him for a few minutes.”
Titania narrows her eyes at Justin again. “Why do you find that thought humorous, Human?” Eve quickly tells her of the plan to tease him at the strip club, hoping to avoid disaster. Titania’s eyes widen for a moment before she begins laughing. When she finally stops, Eve can see the amusement still dancing in her eyes. “Well played, Little Queen! You are definitely worthy of my brother to plan a trick so well!”
“Planned, maybe.” Eve finally stands and bows her head slightly. “But I still have to successfully execute it with him none the wiser until the end.”
“Of that I am sure you can do.” Titania stands as well, gently taking her hands in hers. “Just ask the talismans for help and you shall receive it.” She leans forward and gently kisses Eve’s cheek. “Go and rest, Little Queen. You have much to do until it is time. I will calm our people so there will be no more problems for the wedding.”
Eve stops herself just before thanking her, instead inclining her head again with a smile. She quickly walks away, saying nothing as Justin follows her back to the elevator. Once the doors close, she sags against the wall.
“Well, that went better than I thought it would.” Eve sighs.
“I thought Nalyah was lying about Titania.” Justin stares at the door in thought. “I can see she wasn’t. It’s hard not to offend her, isn’t it?”
“Yes, a very double edged sword every time you talk with her.” Eve steps out onto the floor with Owen’s rooms. “I’m relieved though that she is helping, even if their reasons are unknown.” She opens the door to Owen’s rooms and steps inside. “I can’t go back to the apartment tonight. I feel too exposed.”
Justin glances around, seeing the room for the first time and realizing where he is. “And you don’t here?”
“No.” She chuckles and sits down on a plush couch, tucking her legs under her. “Owen has this place warded to the hilt.”
“He won’t be mad me staying here with you, will he?” Justin scans the room as he walks around.
“Doubt it.” She closes her eyes and leans her head back. “He wanted you with me for a reason and that means wherever I go, you go. I just need to get Samuel and Moon here.”
“Easily done.” Justin grins, whipping out his phone and dialing a number. “Yes, Coyote. There is a change in plans. She will not be going back tonight. She needs her cats to be brought to the castle. Yes, I know that is inconvenient but that is her wishes. Ok, see you in a few minutes.” He grins as he turns the phone off. “I love ordering that pompous ass around.”
“Be careful you don’t push him too far, Justin.” Eve warns, starting to drift off to sleep. “He’s not one you want to piss off either.”
Justin settles down next to her, pulling her against his shoulder. “Suggestion noted. Now rest. You need it.”
She snuggles deeper into the arms holding her, enjoying the feel of fingers running through her hair. Her lips twitch up, feeling his chest vibrate as he chuckles softly. “If you get any closer you will be under my skin.”“I don’t think I want to be that close.” She purrs back, feeling Puck change his grip on her to cradle her head more. “Aren’t you letting Xander work too much without supervision?”
“No.” He kisses her shoulder, breath warm against her skin. “We are on our way home.”
She smiles up at him, happy to know he’s going to be home soon. “Really? That’s a little early.”
He grins back. “David can be persuasive when he wants to be.”
“He got pissed and let them have it, didn’t he?” She lifts a brow, sitting up.
“Yes, he did.” He reaches out and gently pulls on a lock of her hair. “And it is about time. perhaps they will think twice next time.”
“Doubt it.” She laughs as she leans down to kiss him. She feels a slight ripple in the air around them and she lifts her head enough to see Moon staring back at them, her tail hooked as if asking a question.
He sits up as well, staring back at the cat in confusion. “Is something wrong, Moon?”
Moon trots up, jumps on the bed, and touches her nose to his. He closes his eyes, brows drawing down as if he is listening very hard to something. When she finally steps away, settling down on the bed next to Eve with her tail curled around her paws, he opens his eyes and smiles. “Thank you, Moon.”
“What just happened?” Eve glares at him, unsure of what is going on.
“She just informed me that more of her family has arrived in New York.” He takes her hands again, stroking them soothingly. “Most humans will only see a cat but the fae will see them for what they are and be careful of drawing attention to themselves.”
“More? Why?” She turns towards Moon, reaching out to stroke her ears.
“They have decided that they are needed to keep the peace so humans do not know there is anything going on.” Puck sighs and curls up closer around her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “I don’t ask why they need to interfere but I do agree another set of eyes might be a good idea.”
She leans back into him, watching as Moon jumps off the bed and disappears. “Ok.” She closes her eyes, rubbing her cheek against his. “I think I can live with that.”
“Moon and those like her will do as they please just like the cats they resemble.” He chuckles softly. “You’d do best to remember that.”
She laughs, patting his cheek. “I live with Samuel. I think I know that already.”
He kisses her neck, breathing in her scent. “Rest, My Love. I’ll be seeing you soon.”
She closes her eyes, relaxing against him as she drifts back off to sleep.
Lisa Soaring Eagle watches as her mother places herb bundles throughout the bedroom. “You’ll wake her, Old Woman.”“I may be old but I can still move quietly.” The older woman grins, creases lining her face as she waves a bundle at her daughter. “Now hush and let the poor girl rest, Daughter.”
Eve groans as she stretches, her face crunching up in distaste. Her eyes fly open as she suddenly lunges from the bed, racing for the bathroom. Both women stare at each other in confusion until they hear the sound of retching. Lisa waves her mother off, walking to the bathroom to help.
A few minutes later, Lisa helps Eve back to the bedroom. Eve sighs, closing her eyes as if the light hurts them. The older woman settles down on the bed next to her, patting her hand.
“How far along are you?” She lifts Eve’s chin to look closer at her color.
Eve frowns at her, shocked. “What? I’m not pregnant!”
“Vomiting, tiredness, eating more?” She smiles back as Eve’s frown deepens. “Child, I have bore several children. I know the signs when I see them.”
“Grandmother, you don’t understand.” Eve growls in frustration. “I’ve been learning magic, running myself ragged at work, and stressing over this wedding. It’s all nerves.”
Lisa laughs, settling down on Eve’s other side. “When was the last time you had your cycle?” She laughs again as Eve’s frustration changes to shock. “See? She is right then.”
“I still don’t believe it.” Eve closes her eyes and tries to think it through. “Not until I have proof.”
“Proof for what?” Justin steps into the bedroom, glancing from one woman to the other as he carries in a plate of food.
“She is with child, Grandson.” The older woman grins up at him.
He nearly drops the plate, barely saving it at the last moment. “What?” He stares at Eve in shock. “Is it true?”
Eve sighs, running her fingers nervously through her hair. “I don’t know. All I have is what Grandmother Ivy says.” She opens her eyes and glares at him. “Nothing will be said until I know for certain.”
He lifts one eyebrow, setting the plate on a dresser. “I get the hint, Sweetheart. He won’t hear it from me but you better get it in gear and find out your proof soon.”
“I will,” She stands and heads back to the bathroom “as soon as I can. Owen’s already headed home and there’s still a lot to do.”
“Are you going back to your apartment then?” He calls after her.
“No.” She pops her head out to glare at him again. “I don’t want to let Coyote figure it out or let it slip around him. I want it quiet until after our vows are said so there is no doubt about why we are together.”
Justin grins and picks a strawberry off the plate. “I see your point.”
“Justin!” Grandmother Ivy chides him. “Leave that plate alone! Evelyn will need it when she is ready to eat.”
“Yes, Grandmother.” He winks at Eve as she ducks back into the bathroom.
“We’ll also have to modify the rituals.” Lisa stares meaningfully at her son.
“Mom, she’s not going to get any more pregnant than she is now.” He chuckles. “That ship has sailed.”
“Grandson, don’t be ignorant.” Ivy waves him to the door. “Go talk to your sisters and let them know there will be changes.”
He sighs, knowing that tone of voice well. “Yes, Grandmother.”
Eve steps out of the bedroom, unsure how the day is going to go. Grandmother’s words swirl around in her head and although they make sense, she doesn’t want to believe them. She sees Justin’s family all sitting on the plush couches, staring at her expectantly. She sees Justin missing and frowns. “Where’d Justin go?”“To meet your bond mate, My Queen.” Nalyah steps out of the shadows and kneels at her feet. “I am to make sure you are happy in his absence.”
“That isn’t necessary, Nalyah.” She frowns down at the Dryad. “You are a guest here because of Justin, not my slave. Behave like a guest.”
“Yes, My Queen.” She stands and grins. “I am very happy for you.”
Eve grows concerned. “Why?”
“Because you carry your bond mate’s children.” She claps her hands together in excitement. “Children are very important to us Fae.”
“Children?” Eve lifts a brow and lay a hand on her stomach.
Nalyah frowns, confused. “Didn’t you know? You carry twins?” Eve feels her knees begins to buckle and Nalyah’s hands catch her. “I’m sorry, My Queen. I thought you knew. It is stupid of me to assume such things. I am sorry.”
Eve pats Nalyah’s hand, waiting for the room to stop swimming. “It’s ok. You didn’t know I had no idea. I didn’t even suspect I was pregnant until this morning.”
“Then he doesn’t know?” Nalyah’s voice goes soft in shock.
“No and I don’t want anyone else to know either until I tell him after our vows.” She stands and walks shakily to the nearest couch with her help.
“I will tell no one, My Queen.” She steps away and hands her a glass of juice.
Eve sees Melinda staring at her intently. “If you have something to say, Melinda, spit it out.”
“I just never thought you’d sell your body and soul to the Fae for riches and money.” She sneers back. “I see the rooms you live in, the hordes of clothing in your closets, and the delicacies you eat!”
“Funny cause I have yet to see the closets since this actually isn’t my rooms yet but Owen’s.” Eve sneers back. “As for the food, I don’t see you turning your nose up at it.”
Nalyah suddenly sits down next to Eve, eyes wide with shock. “Oh my! This is how I used to be, isn’t it? All venom covered in honey?”
“Yes, Nalyah.” Eve reaches out and pats her hand without taking her eyes off of Melinda. “Exactly like this.”
“I was wrong. I am sorry.” One tears slowly slides down her cheek.
Eve glances away from Melinda, softening her gaze at Nalyah. “I know you are, but I can’t take away the geas until you have learned all you need to.”
“I am not asking you to.” She straightens her shoulders and smiles softly back. “I understand your reasoning now and accept it.” She glares over at Melinda. “You would do well to learn from my mistakes before you burn bridges you didn’t know you needed.”
“I need to learn nothing from you!” Melinda growls back full of hate.
Eve lifts a brow as she turns her gaze on Grandmother Ivy. “Is she necessary for what you have planned?”
“No, I can always substitute someone else if you’d like.” Grandmother smiles knowingly back.
“Good.” She swings her gaze back to Melinda, magic barely jumping between her fingertips. “Melinda, you are bound to these rooms until it is time to leave for the wedding. You will not be able to harm anyone or yourself while you are in New York. Is that understood?”
Melinda opens her mouth to yell angrily back but nothing comes out. Shocked, she stands and grabs a vase to throw but the vase stays stuck to her hand. She fights to get it off until she grows angry enough to stalk off to another corner of the room to sit alone.
Grandmother grins as she watches her granddaughter fight with the vase. “I have been waiting to see this for ages!”
Melinda’s sister, Faith, laughs. “Me too!”
Lisa sighs, shaking her head. “At least it will be quieter for a while.”
Eve leans her head back on the couch, closing her eyes. “Thank god. I need quiet.”
Grandmother smiles warmly at her. “Rest, Child. We have everything well in hand until you are needed this evening.”
“Needed?” Eve opens one eye and stares at the ceiling.
Lisa laughs. “Justin told us your plans for the evening so we wouldn’t interfere. I wish I was that bold.”
Nalyah giggles and gently touches Eve’s hand. “Do not worry. We will help you.”
“Oh.” Eve closes her eye again, body starting to relax. “Ok. Just don’t let me sleep all day.”
Fox stares at her in confusion as Eve stares at herself in a mirror. “So let me get this straight. Justin’s Grandmother says you are pregnant and Nalyah says it’s twins.”Eve lays a hand on her bare stomach, trying to feel if there’s a difference there. “Yep.”
“Well there’s always one way to find out.” Fox laughs at Eve’s frown. “Get a home test. If it shows positive, I’ll call my doctor and make you an appointment.”
“I guess.” She sighs and goes back to looking at the rest of herself. “But in the meantime I still have to figure out how I want to hide the jewelry.” She gently strokes the necklace. “Your mom said to ask them for help.”
The dragon lifts its head, rubbing it along her finger. Eve’s eyes widen in shock as she continues to stroke it. “Um, ok. So maybe they are listening.” She looks at the dragon through the mirror as it stares back at her. “I need to hide you in such a way that Owen won’t know it’s me with a mask on. Any ideas?”
The dragon cocks its head for a moment and then turns towards her neck, disappearing into her skin as it slides along her neck. Eve freezes in place, the feeling of something moving inside her skin strange but not painful. She blinks in shock as color suddenly blossoms along parts of her skin.
“Wow!” Fox stares at her back in shock. “You should see this! It looks like you have a dragon tattoo now!”
Eve’s jaw drops as the snake unwinds itself from her arm and slithers along her shoulder to disappear as well. The cat yawns and stretches, blinking at her for a moment before following suit. She feels the cat stalk across her chest, finally stopping just above her breasts. The image of a panther clawing its way out of her skin appears, looking lifelike as if its claws and fangs could reach out and get the viewer.
“Is it just as realistic on my back?” Eve gasps in shock.
“Very realistic.” Fox grabs a smaller mirror and holds it up for Eve to see.
“Holy hell!” Eve stares at the image of a dragon, wings out stretched along the back of her arms, holding a snake in its claws. The ‘tattoo’ takes up almost every inch of her back. “That’ll keep everybody guessing!”
“Perfect!” Fox laughs and leans back on the bed, laying the mirror down. “He’ll never guess it’s you!”
“I can’t wait!” Eve grins. “Thanks guys! I love it!” She laughs as she feels almost a purr like vibration rolls through her body.
“Now to get you there without anyone the wiser.” Fox winks.
