Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Justin’s eyes flash open, his body going still as he listens to the apartment. Something had woke him and he listens, keeping his breathing steady and quiet. He hears Coyote stir across the room, his soft footfalls coming towards Eve’s bedroom door. He focuses on her door and hears soft crying. Knowing that sound and not wanting Coyote near her when she’s like this, he silently slides from his sleeping bag. He glides up to her door, watching as Coyote listens intently.
Coyote opens one eye, staring at him. “Sneaking up on me is not going to work, pup. I heard you the moment you woke.” He lays a hand on the door and Samuel growls. “I cannot go in to check on her.”
“You can’t but I can.” He steps around Samuel and slowly turns the knob.
“What is wrong with my Queen?” Coyote suddenly sounds genuinely concerned.
Justin stills his body again, looking at the other man in the eyes. “Nightmares. She’s been having them ever since her dad died. All it takes is a little stress to bring them out and right now you are not helping her stress situation.”
Coyote bows his head, stepping away from the bedroom. “I see. Then I will leave you to checking on her.”
Justin nods to him before silently slipping into the room with her. He can see her curled on her side, softly crying into her pillow. He can tell from her no reaction to his coming into the room that she is still asleep. He settles on the bed by her back, gently stroking her back to soothe her.
“It’s just a dream, Sweetie. Just a dream.” He croons to her until she finally wakes.
She gasps, rolling from the bed and lunging for the bathroom. Knowing this might happen, Justin jumps off the bed as well and follows her. He pulls the hair from her face as she heaves, knowing she hasn’t even realized he’s there yet. When she finally stops, head hanging low over the bowl, Moon hands her a wet rag. She wipes at her face and finally sees Justin there with her.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.” She sniffs, tears still brimming her eyes.
“Old dream back?” He takes the rag and dabs at her face, soothing her more.
“Yeah.” She closes her eyes and tries to hold back the tears. “But worse. I saw my brother this time too.” She glances at her nightstand as her phone begins to ring. “That would be Owen.” She starts to cry again. “I didn’t mean to let him feel that.”
Justin pats her hand and stands. “I’ll get it.” He walks over and picks up the phone, seeing Owen’s ID on the screen. “She’s ok. It’s just a nightmare she’s had before.” He tells Owen without preamble.
“I can have Alexander make me a portal home right now.” Owen sighs, his frustration showing. “It’s time for me to come home.”
“Peace, Owen.” Justin smiles, understanding his frustration. “You asked me to come early for a reason. Trust me. She’s fine.”
“It is not that I do not trust you, Justin.” Owen sighs again, weariness starting to show. “But I cannot stand to be this far away from her for so long. I want to be there for her.”
“I know but what will happen if you don’t get everything finished this time around?” Justin sits on the bed, watching as Eve finally stands and goes to the sink to wash the rag.
He groans. “They will be calling me over our honeymoon and I will be liable to do bad things to them.” He sighs again. “Do me a favor and sleep with her tonight.”
“What?” Justin nearly sputters in shock.
“Not that kind of sleep!” Owen growls back. “Moon and Samuel can only comfort her so much lying next to her. She needs someone to hold her while she sleeps. I trust you to do that and only that for her.”
Justin laughs softly as Eve steps into the room, staring at him in confusion. “That I can do. I’ll get her back to sleep since she seems to be ok now.”
“Thank you.” His voice goes distant for a moment. “I will call her this evening before she goes to bed.”
“I’ll let her know.” Justin waits until Owen hangs up before setting the phone down. “I think you just about gave him a heart attack.”
She smiles sadly as she settles down on the bed. “Probably. That’s the bad thing about this bond. I can’t keep anything from him, especially when I’m sleeping.”
Justin curls her into his arm, pulls her down onto the bed, and covers them with the blanket. “Well I have express orders to sleep with you.” He laughs as he feels her body go suddenly ridged. “Yeah, I thought that at first too but he only wants us to sleep, Sweetie. So relax and get some rest. This is going to be a long week.”
“No doubt.” She snuggles closer and closes her eyes. “Thanks, Justin.”
He strokes her arm, letting her relax against him. “No problem, Sweetie.”
Eve wakes up and glances around the room. A light clicking sound draws her gaze to the floor by her bed, where Justin is. She grins, seeing him lying on his stomach, headphones in his ears, with his elbows propping him up enough to type away on his phone. The goofy smirk on his face gives her a clue as to who he is texting. She waits until he hits send to throw a pillow at him, knocking him hard in the head.“Hey!” He grabs the pillow and tosses it back at her, missing. “What are you trying to do? Knock my head off?”
She grins back, poised with another in her hand. “I figured since you don’t need that one to keep Nalyah happy I’d take care of it for you.”
“Brat!” He throws his hands up as another pillow sails towards his head. He blocks it and jumps up on the bed, grabbing and tickling her. “I’ll make you pay for that!”
She squeals, trying to wiggle away. Moon glares at them, jumps off the bed, and saunters through the closed door. Justin finally stops, letting Eve breath. She pushes him over, climbing off the bed and flipping him off.
“I love you too!” He yells back at her, laughing as she closes the bathroom door. He heaves himself off of the bed and walks over to the bedroom door. “I’ll go make sure Samuel isn’t ready to kill me.”
He steps through the door to see three pairs of eyes watching him. Coyote and Samuel he expected to glare at him, but the stranger put him on immediate alert. “Is something wrong, Coyote?”
“My Queen will be late for work.” He glances at the other Fae male standing next to him. “And Rowan has reported that several Fae have tried to take her stallions overnight.”
“Tried?” Justin sizes the other male up, not liking the way he is glaring back.
“Apparently the stallions fought off their captors.” Coyote’s frown deepens. “It is unheard of for a human to own Fae stallions and even more so for them to not want to be taken back to their home.”
Justin laughs, causing the glares to turn to anger. “You idiots! She doesn’t own them! They freely live with and protect her! Her farm is their home! Why would they want to leave that to go with any of you?”
Coyote lowers his head in thought while the other Fae bristles at Justin’s tone. Coyote gives Rowan a look and the other Fae slinks out the door. “You may have a point. There is much unheard of that has happened concerning our Queen. I will have to think on it.”
“Will there be any more attacks I need to worry about?” Justin crosses his arms over his chest.
“No.” Coyote stands tall, pulling a leather jacket from behind him. “Rowan has taken care of things for the moment. I will scout ahead and make sure it is safe for her to leave for work.”
“Alrighty then.” Justin watches him intently as he steps out of the apartment, closing the door behind him. He waits until he is sure that Coyote is out of ear shot before looking at Samuel and shrugging. “Do you believe things are in control?”
Samuel narrows his eyes and stretches his claws out for a moment. Moon flashes her teeth as she yawns. Justin laughs at them, turning away from the door and heading back to the bedroom to get his bag. “Me neither.”
Eve leans back in the chair, sighing heavily as she waits for the clock to hit 5pm. Justin glances up from his book, lips twitching up. “You know, you are the one who wanted an office job.”“I know.” She growls out, bored out of her mind. “I just didn’t think everyone would take all my work days before my wedding thinking that I would enjoy the quiet when in fact it’s driving me nuts!”
He laughs and lays the book down. “What else could you be doing?”
“I don’t know!” She groans, laying an arm over her eyes to block out the light.
“Quit whining!” Allanna walks into the office and sets a stack of papers down. “You are not a 5 yr old.” She glares at Eve in mock anger as she pulls a file out from under her arm. “Besides, it’s not like we’ve been purposefully making you idle. It’s been a very quiet day.” She hands the file to Eve. “This just came from Colton. I think it’s the report you’ve been waiting on.”
Eve flips it open and suddenly her face lights up. “Yes! I thought there was something fishy there!” She grins up at Allanna. “Can you make me a copy of this..?” She starts to ask but Allanna smiles and hands her another folder. “Awesome! You’re the greatest! Now I just have to find Fox.”
“Already done.” Allanna winks. “She is waiting for you in her office.”
“I could kiss you.” Eve laughs as she stands up and heads for the door. “But I won’t cause I don’t want Owen getting jealous.” She glances over her shoulder at Justin. “Coming o’protector of mine?”
“Wouldn’t miss it!” Justin jumps up and follows her out.
Later that evening, Eve curls up on the bed and watches Justin texting on his sleeping bag on the floor. “When did you say everybody will be here?”“Thursday morning.” He looks up, smiling. “Nalyah is excited but frightened because she’s never been on a plane before.”
“Tell her to chew gum.” Eve giggles. “It’ll keep her ears from hurting.”
Justin shakes his head, laughing. “She has no clue what gum is.” He sets his phone down and rolls over onto his back, folding his arms under his head. “I’m just hoping Melanie leaves her alone and doesn’t cause any issues.”
Eve frowns, balling up her pillow to support her better. “Why?”
“Melanie has taken exception to the fact that there is a Fae living with me.” He sighs, closing his eyes. “She was told when she came to help with the hay and has bitched about it ever since.” He opens his eyes, sadness in them. “She doesn’t like the fact that we are on good terms with them and thinks we are all going to be enslaved soon.”
“Not if I can help it.” Eve rolls her eyes and sighs. “But your sister was always a doomsday believer so I’m sure she will flip out when she finds out about Owen.”
“Yeah, um, Grandma has kinda kept that a secret. Said it’s not for us to tell.” He glances away shyly. “I’m not gonna go against Grandma’s wishes on this one.”
Eve chuckles. “Yeah, me neither.” She smoothes her pillow out and flicks off the light. “Night, Brat.”
“Night, Monster.” He laughs in the darkness as he settles down to sleep.
Eve stares in horror at the ground around her. Blood runs like a river across her feet and she nearly scream as she lifts her hands to see them covered as well. Her dad and Michael shuffle towards her, both wearing the same injuries they had when they died but blood pouring from them to join the river of it between them and her. She does scream this time, trying to run away but her body is frozen. All she can do scream until her voice is raw.Gentle hands touch her face, turning her head away from her family coming towards her. She sees Puck staring back at her, brows drawn together. “It is only a dream, My Love.” He gently strokes her cheek. “They are not real.”
She sobs, falling into her arms. “Why are they here then? Why can’t they just leave me alone?”
He lifts her chin and kisses her forehead. “Ask them.” His lips lift up at her look of horror. “Look past the pain and grief. See them for who they are in your heart, not who you think they were when they died.”
She looks over the cover of his arms and sees her dad and brother whole again, smiling back at her. She begins crying again, turning to face them but not letting go of Puck’s hand. “Daddy? Michael?”
Her dad spreads his arms wide, laughing at her. “Come here, Pumpkin. I’ve been waiting on you to be ready to see me for a long time.”
She runs to him, pulling Puck along with her, and throws herself into his arms. Michael steps forward, grinning. “Where’s my hug, Little Bit?”
Puck moves his hands to her back, gently rubbing soothing circles as she reaches out and pulls her brother into their embrace. When she finally stops crying, she looks up at her family and whispers “How?”
“We’ve always been here, Pumpkin.” Her Dad laughs, patting her cheek. “I told you we never truly die. We’ve been watching over you.”
“Although there have been times I’ve wanted to cuff you a few times for being absolutely stupid,” Michael sighs. ”you’ve done good.”
“I miss you both” She sniffs. “so much it hurts.”
“Oh, Sweetheart,” Her Dad kisses her nose “you have to let it go. How can you look forward if you are always looking back?”
“And we will always be here when you need us.” Michael smacks her lightly on the back of the head. “All you have to do is talk, Booger.”
“Snot rag.” Eve blinks up at him, amused.
“Ankle biter.” He smirks back, baiting her.
“Carpet munch..” Eve narrows her eyes, grinning back.
“Children! Enough!” Her dad rolls his eyes and chuckles. “Even in death you two fight! Will I ever get a break?”
“No.” Both reply in unison, cracking up and hugging each other tighter.
Her Dad shakes his head, sighing softly. “It’s time for us to go, Sweetheart.” He gently strokes her cheek, poking her nose for good measure. “No more of these nightmares. That’s not how we lived and they are not of our making.”
Michael gently shoves her, jumping out of harm’s way. “Yeah, Little Bit. Next time give me some babes to romp with.”
She straightens her back, trying to hold back her tears. “I can’t make promises.” She bites her lip. “I love you.”
“We love you too.” Her dad waves to her as her brother sticks his tongue out at her playfully.
Puck wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her against his warmth as her family start to fade. As soon as they are gone, she sags against him, letting the tears flow again. He strokes her hair back, letting her cry herself out.
When she can finally get calm again, she pushes away from him enough to look up at him. “How did you know?”
“We’re entwined, My Love.” He smiles sadly back. “I felt your pain and came to find you.”
“But what about..” She starts to say but he places a finger on her lips to stop the words.
“Nothing is more important than you.” His lips twitch up. “Besides, Alexander has to learn to handle things at some point. I’ll be back with him in an hour or two. Until then, I plan on holding you while you sleep.”
She chuckles, suddenly realizing the scene has changed and they are now in her bedroom. He pulls her to the bed and curls up beside her. She buries her head in his neck, sighing contentedly as she closes her eyes.
“Rest now.” He gently strokes her back as her body relaxes into deeper sleep.
Justin sits next to Eve, watching as the tears slowly stop and dry on her face. Her hands loosen on her pillow as her body starts to relax again. When he is sure she has drifted back to deeper sleep, he slides back off the bed slowly as not to wake her and picks up his phone. He sends a one word message, knowing it might take a while before it is seen.Thanks.
