Fox smiles, watching Coyote carry the boxes to Eve’s room. She leans against the elevator, crossing her arms over her chest. “So how long will he be guard dogging you?”
“I don’t know but it’s already a pain in my ass.” Eve sighs, her fingers drumming on top of a box.
“And Owen’s sending help?” Fox lifts a brow, amused at her aggravation.
“Yep but not fast enough for me.” Eve scrubs at her face. “I thought Owen was protective of me but at least he lets me go to the bathroom without checking it out first!”
Fox laughs, the image running through her mind of Coyote checking every corner of the bathroom while Eve stands at the door. “That’s funny!”
Eve’s shoulders sag, lips twitching up. “Yeah, I guess it is. I’m just frustrated. I was kind of looking forward to a day or so of quiet.”
“And this isn’t quiet.” Fox reaches out and rubs her arm soothingly.
“Not at all.” She frowns again as Coyote walks towards them. “But I’ll have everything packed by tomorrow and stored at this rate.”
“If he’s busy helping you move, he won’t have time to think of ways to get around Owen’s little change in his orders.” Fox winks.
“Very true.” Eve straightens, a wicked smile on her face. “And I plan on making him work.”
Eve groans as she opens the door to her apartment. It had been a long day of boxing and transporting everything but the bedroom to the castle. She made sure to make Coyote do all the heavy lifting but she still felt tired and achy. She kicks her shoes off next to the door and heads for her bedroom.Coyote steps in and quietly closes the door behind him. He glances around at the near empty apartment and frowns. “Why are we back here, My Queen? There is little left. Are you planning on continuing to pack?”
“Nope.” She stops at the door and waves Moon to follow her. “I am done for the night. it’s time for me to go get some sleep.”
He looks around the room again, his frown deepening. “And where will I stay?”
She smirks. “You have magic. I am sure you will figure out a way to make the floor comfortable. Good night, Coyote.”
He nearly snarls as she closes the door behind her.
Eve lounges in her bed, reading an old book she had forgotten in her nightstand. She didn’t feel like dealing with Coyote yet so she had spent the whole morning reading in her bedroom. Moon shifts against her, curling up against her back. Her stomach begins to rumble and she looks up at the clock.
“Good lord, Moon! Why did you let me sit here so long? It’s 1:30 already!” She slides her feet off the bed and stretches. “No wonder I’m hungry. I missed breakfast and lunch.”
Moon opens one eye at her and yawns.
Eve grins at her and pads to the bathroom. “Whatever, Moon. You know I can’t eat your kibble or any of the local rodents.” She strips down and turns on the shower. “I can just imagine how aggravated both boys probably are right now since I haven’t come out yet.”
Moon pads in behind her and begins to clean her paws. Eve laughs and steps into the shower, knowing that’s Moon’s opinion on the guys waiting on them. She gets most of the way through her shower before Moon starts yowling at her. With a groan, she rinses her hair and turns the water off.
“What?” She whisks the curtain open and grabs a towel. “Need to use the litter box or something? I know you can go right through that door without me opening it.” She wraps the towel around her, nearly stumbling over Moon as she winds her way through her feet as she walks back into the bathroom and pulls out a pair of jeans and t-shirt. “Seriously. What is wrong with you?”
Moon walks over to the bedroom door, paws at it, and lays her ears flat against her skull. Frowning, Eve dresses and opens the door. She gapes at the sight of Justin and Coyote squaring off in the living room, Samuel standing next to Justin with his fur fluffed. She steps into the living room, Moon close at her heels.
“What the hell is going on out here?” She yells at them.
Both men lower their eyes, Justin stepping towards her as Samuel keeps between him and Coyote. “So this is what Owen was wanting me to come here early for?” Justin narrows his eyes at Coyote. “I see nothing here to worry about.”
Coyote bristles, rounding on the other man. Eve sighs, holding out her hand and wrapping him in magic to keep him from moving. “Don’t!” She growls out. “He is one of mine and if you even think about hurting a hair on his head I will make you feel the worst pain you’ve ever had.”
He lowers his head, bowing the moment she releases him. “As you wish , My Queen.”
Justin smirks. “Neat trick. Can he stay, roll over, and beg too?”
“Justin.” She sighs again, taking his hand and threading her fingers in his. “That’s enough. I have enough stress to worry about without two puppies fighting.”
He grins, kissing her cheek. “Ok but only if he behaves.” He wraps his other arm around her, hugging her close. “So what is left to do?”
“Oh I don’t know?” She smiles back, leaning into his hug. “Freak out, throw a few things, puke a few more times, and run away so I can hide?”
“You wouldn’t.” He chuckles and pulls away from her. “Besides, I did not just haul Thunder’s considerable ass here just for you to get cold feet.”
“Thunder’s here?” She bounces on her toes in excitement. “Where?”
Justin laughs, knowing that would pull her from her funk. “Still out in the trailer with Warrior. I thought you might want to go with me to the stable they are going to be housed in for the next week and make sure they are comfortable.”
“Warrior too? Really?” She laughs as she lets him go and searches for her shoes.
“Like he would let me leave him behind?” He glances at Coyote. “Those two wouldn’t let me do that the moment they knew why I was coming.”
She winks at him as she shoves her feet into her shoes. “I bet. Let’s go get the settled then.”
“My Queen, you cannot go running off without me checking the area first.” Coyote glowers at her.
“Then get a move on.” Justin lifts a brow at him. “And if you plan on tagging along, you better plan on being in the horse trailer. There’s no room in the truck for a third person.”
Eve shrugs at Coyote’s flat stare. “He has a point. I’m not waiting for you to make up your mind. I’m leaving.” She turns and nearly bounces her way to the door, excited to see Justin and the horses again.
All day they worked with the horses, riding and settling them in. Eve had forgotten how much fun just going out and riding was. Her stress level finally lowered enough for her to really look at Coyote instead of bristle at his intrusion. She could see him legitimately scanning the area around them, his eyes always searching for anything that shouldn’t be there. When they finally decided to head back to her apartment at dusk, Eve glances at Coyote sitting in the bed of the truck and sighs. “I think he really is trying to keep me safe.”
Justin glances in the rearview mirror. “I know. I just don’t like how he’s going about it.”
“So what should I do?” She folds her hands in her lap and tries not to fuss. “This is all so far out of my league.”
“Let him stay.” Justin smiles. “Owen and I discussed it. I’m here to keep him in line, not keep the Fae in line.” He winks at her. “There is a use for the old dog.”
She laughs softly. “You are just not right.”
“I know.” He pulls into her apartment building. “I’m just glad no one sees him back there are we’d have the cops crawling all over us.”
“Too true.” She glances over at him again. “But so long as he doesn’t use his invisibility to spy on me, I don’t mind.”
Justin grins as he pulls into a parking spot. “I’ll make sure that won’t happen. Owen’s already told me how to keep him from doing that.”
She grins. “Why do I have a feeling He’s not going to like what you and Owen have cooked up?”
“Because he won’t.” Justin winks at her again as he shuts off the engine.
Eve pulls another piece of pizza from the box, trying to hide her smile as Justin checks his phone again. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were expecting a phone call.”He lays his phone down on the counter and slightly blushes. “Not really. Just worried about home.”
Eve turns and really looks at him, noticing the way his body leans towards the counter and his fingers keep straying towards the phone. “How long have you felt this way?”
He frowns, glancing at her. “What do you mean?”
“Come on, Justin.” She grins, taking a bite of her pizza. “I’m not blind.”
He blushes again. “For a few weeks at least.” He leans on his elbows, hair falling down to cover his face. “I just thought at first it was because I thought she needed help and I was caring for her. Now I’m not so certain.”
“How does Nalyah feel?” She reaches out and brushes the hair over his ear so she can see his face.
“I don’t know.” He laughs softly. “Some days it’s like she can’t live without me and other days it’s like she wants to be as far from me as possible.”
“Ask her to go with you to the farm.” Eve leans down on her elbows too.
“What?” Justin stares at her in shock. “She can’t!”
“Justin, I’m the one who punished her.” She sighs softly, twirling the crust in her fingers. “If she truly loves you, she will be able to cross the barrier.”
“A test.” He stands straight again, gazing down at the pizza box without seeing it.
“Yes, a test.” She reaches out and takes his hand, squeezing it. “Then you will know your answer. Believe me, living with the Fae is not easy. Especially when they run hot and cold because they are afraid of their own feelings, it’s hard.”
Justin gives her a slight smile. “I bet you made him pay for that.”
“Yes I did.” She grins back. “When is your family coming?”
“They have a flight Thurs morning.” He glances at his phone again.
“Call and book another seat.” She squeezes his hand again before letting go. “So long as she behaves herself, she can stay here with you.”
“Serious?” He reaches out and cups her face in his hand, looking straight into her eyes.
“Serious.” She stares back, a smile still touching her lips. “Go make your calls.”
He laughs, pulling her into his arms and kissing the top of her head. “Don’t tell him I said this but I can already see Owen is good for you.”
“She laughs, hugging him back. “I won’t or he’d get a swelled head.”
Justin steps back from her, grinning wickedly. “I thought you liked it when his head swelled.”
She slaps at his arm, blushing fiercely. “Justin! You’re a brat!” She shoves him towards the living room. “Go make your call before I change my mind!”
His laughter echoes through the nearly empty apartment as he walks into the living room.
