Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Eve shifts in the chair, the heavy weight of Samuel making her legs feel numb. She groans, stretching her legs out to get rid of the stiffness. Samuel climbs up higher on her lap, rubbing his face against hers. She scratches behind his ears, feeling his soft fur beneath her fingers. She glances at the clock, groaning again when she realizes how late it is.
She pushes Samuel off of her lap and stands, a yawn escaping her. “Time for me to crawl into bed. That chair is not comfortable enough to sleep in all night.”
Samuel follows her to the bedroom, stopping as she shuts the door in his face. He meows loudly, one paw batting at the door.
“Don’t even think about it!” She yells through the door. “You are no longer allowed in any room when I am naked!”
Samuel sit in front of the door, whiskers drooping and yowling pitifully.
“Nope! Not happening!” She yells back. “You should’ve never let me know what you are if you wanted to be a little voyeur!”
Samuel’s ears pin back and a slight growl rumbles through him as he lays down.
Owen opens his eyes to a barely darkened room. He reaches up and gently touches his shoulder, waiting for a flash of pain. Instead, he feels smooth skin under his fingers and only a slight ache. He sits up, glancing towards the resting form sitting by the bed.
“You should be resting, My Prince.” Grandmother’s voice whispers from her darkened corner. “The healing is not complete but it is far more than I had anticipated from our new queen.”
“She shouldn’t have done it at all.” He growls back, swinging his legs off of the bed before realizing he’s naked. “Where are my clothes?”
“Modesty in one who has no need for it.” She laughs and points towards a nearby table. “Your clothes were ruined so more was brought in for you.” When he gives her a level look, she laughs harder. “As if I have not seen you before! Child, get dressed and do not bother with an old woman!”
“Be that as it may, Eve is not here and I do not care for displays that are not approved of.” He wraps a sheet around his waist and pads over to the table. “I do not care for the idea of making her angry.”
“Very well.” She heaves herself out of the chair and walks towards the door. “I will leave you then since it seems you are recovered enough to argue.”
“Thank you, Grandmother.” He bows his head as she walks out.
Once the door is closed, he tries to dress as quickly as possible. He finds out she is right about his shoulder not being completely healed. He can feel the muscles pulling and aching as he moves. Once dressed, he holds his arm close to his chest to relieve some of the pressure. A soft knock at the door gives him only a moment’s notice before David opens it.
David accesses Owen with a quick glance, noticing the way he is hold his arm close. “Still hurts like a bitch?” Owen nods and David settles down on the bed. “I’ll get you a sling to use for the time being.”
“I would much rather bear the pain and not let on that I am hurt.” He grimaces and straightens his arm again.
“We will be leaving this evening so it won’t matter one way or another.” David eyes him coolly. “Who do you think will see you that it would matter anyway?”
“My kinsman.” Owen glances towards the door. “If I show weakness, then it will look as if Eve does not favor me enough to fully heal me. They wouldn’t see that she is not capable of that yet or she would’ve.”
“I see.” David nods, rubbing his goatee. “Then let me do most of the talking. Justin is going to stay here until he can get the good doctor back to his house safely. Shipments are already on their way so the town will be able to get back to semi normal soon. Donnelly and the others who signed over their land will be protected by wards by this afternoon.” He grins and winks. “Grandmother was very eager to get her people right on that project. She is also very agreeable to letting them stay in their homes as well.”
“She knows most of the people in this town, whether they know it or not.” His lips twitch up as he realizes how far their plan has come in the last few hours. “Getties will find himself very unwelcome soon.”
David laughs, standing up and holding out a hand to help Owen up. “Oh he will, alright! I have a friend that is already buying his little bank in the works. Soon he’ll even be out of a job.”
Owen smiles evilly as he stands. “Fate has a way of catching up to those that meddle in our affairs.”
“Indeed it does.” He pats Owen’s good arm. “Ready to face the wolves?”
“Lead on.” Owen nods towards the door.
Eve groans, her stomach painfully waking her from blissful sleep. She rolls off the bed, feet hitting the floor with a thump, and runs for the bathroom. She reaches it just in time to empty her stomach. Soft, small hands drape cloth over her shoulders as her body shakes in the cooler air. She finally leans back, pulling the robe tighter around her shoulders. A damp cloth appears before her, a small hand holding it cautiously.“Thank you, Samuel.” She takes the cloth and wipes her face. “Damn magic has taken it out of me again.” She grumbles as she flushes the toilet and stands. “I know better than to push myself to the limit like I did last night.”
Samuel watches her closely, padding along behind her as she goes back to the bedroom. He hops on the bed, swinging his feet as if they were a tail.
Eve glances over at him, sighing softly. “You’re not going to let me out of your sight now, are you?”
Samuel crosses his arms, shaking his head. His slitted eyes narrow at her menacingly.
She closes her eyes, groaning in frustration. “Ok! Ok!” She holds her hands up. “I get it! I swear I’ll take it easy today but I have to go into the office. There’s too much to do to take a day off.”
Samuel changes back, his tail swishing angrily. He curls up, closing his eyes.
“Well at least you will let me dress without staring at me.” She grumbles. A soft growl comes from his small form and she laughs softly. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll hurry.”
Owen watches as the rest of the fae slowly fill the paddock outside of the main barn. Justin stands close by, nervously eyeing the newcomers. “Are you sure this is necessary? What if they don’t like your judgment?”Owen nods slightly to Grandmother Willow as she walks to the center, quieting those around them. “They don’t have to. I carry the authority of their Queen.”
Grandmother slightly raises her voice and nods back to him. “You have called us here, My Prince, and we have come as asked. What is your will?”
“It is not my will, Grandmother.” He steps into the center with her. “It is our Queen’s will. She knows what has happened here and the threat Getties has posed. I have come to remedy this.” He slowly rakes the crowd with his gaze. “Our territory has grown with the permission of the humans who live there. It is her will that we look after those humans and allow them to live as they have in the past.”
“Must we show ourselves to them?” A soft voice whispers from the crowd.
“No.” He glances at Donnelly. “Only one knows of us now and that was not something anyone could have prevented.”
Grandmother lifts a brow, her lips thinning slightly. “Yes, a most unfortunate event. However, you know that he must pay for his transgression.”
Donnelly pales as Owen waves for him to come closer. “Indeed, he shall. My Queen has told me her will in this as well.”
Donnelly stops short, his hands clasped to hide their trembling. “Who is your Queen?”
“Eve.” Owen steps closer to him.
“Oh god!” Donnelly falls to his knees.
“James Donnelly, you have transgressed against our Queen twice.” Owen’s face becomes a mask. “First when you accidentally took the life of her brother. Second, when you shot her bond mate, me.”
Donnelly begins to cry, fearing the worst. “I’m sorry.”
“Our Queen is aware of this.” He lays a gentle hand on Donnelly’s shoulder. “She is also a forgiving Queen when she feels it is warranted.” He looks up at the crowd. “You have seen our Queen’s wrath. Now you will see her mercy.” He gives Donnelly’s shoulder a gentle squeeze before stepping away. “James Donnelly, my Queen has forgiven you in the death of Michael Anderson. She knows that you were trying to kill the bear that was trying to maul her brother and he stepped in the way as you fired.”
“Thank you.” Donnelly sobs.
“For shooting and wounding her bond mate, you will relinquish your property and be bound for the rest of your life to help her people defend this sanctuary. You may leave and move about the community but when you are called, you must come to help us.” He narrows his eyes slightly. “Does that sound like an acceptable sentence to you, Donnelly?”
Donnelly stands, wiping his eyes. “It doesn’t matter what I think. She has the right to judge me as she sees fit and I accept her decision.” He squares his shoulders. “I am Eve’s to command.”
“Grandmother will take you under her wing and instruct you in our ways so that you can never make this mistake again.” Owen nods to her, noticing the slight smile touching her lips. “Now go with her. The wards will soon be extended to the new boundary line.”
“Yes, Of course.” Donnelly walks over to the older Dryad and bows to her.
She smiles warmly at him, draping her arm through his. “Walk with an old woman.”
Eve sighs, staring at the computer screen but not seeing it. She runs her mental ‘hand’ along their bond, hoping to feel something that will tell her how he is doing. Instead she finds a wall and it confuses her. She finally turns and glares at Samuel, who has taken up residence on her desk. “Do you mind not looking at me like that?”He yawns, flipping his tail tip like a rattle snake. She sighs, pushing away from the desk and pacing. “I know what you’re thinking. I need to quit poking around and wait patiently.” She stops, groaning in frustration. “It’s hard though.” She flops back down on the chair, laying her head down on the desk. “I want to know he’s not hiding any more injuries from me.” Samuel reaches out and begins to groom her hand, using one paw to hold it still. She laughs softly, turning her hand to scratch him under the chin. “Thanks.”
The phone rings, startling her. She grabs for it, trying to calm her nerves. “Hello? This is Miss Anderson.”
“Calm yourself, my dear. I can feel your heart thundering from here.” His voice purrs to her from the phone.
“Damn it, Owen!” She growls back. “Don’t scare me like that! I haven’t been able to sense how you are all day!”
“My apologies.” He opens up his side of the bond enough for her to feel him. “Better?”
She sighs softly, relieved. “Much better.”
“You’re not feeling well again.” She feels him start to become annoyed with her. “Why are you at work?”
“Do you think too much magic and nerves might be the cause of that?” She growls again. “You were hurt! It’s not like I can be all calm about it and sit in my room like nothing ever happened. I need to be here to keep my mind off of it.” Samuel sneezes and gives a baleful look. “Come off it, Samuel. I don’t need your lip too.”
He sighs softly. “Very well. I should be home in a few hours. Speaking of Samuel, how long have you had him?”
“Since he was a little kitten.” She reaches out and strokes his head. “My neighbor heard him crying in the alley one night, so young he barely had his eyes open. We took turns bottle feeding him until he was old enough to eat regular food. When Macy moved, I kept him.”
“There is a small colony here with a young female willing to meet him if he is interested.” Owen’s voice fades for a moment. “From the sound of it, perhaps he will need this contact to learn more about who he is.”
Samuel’s ears twitch and his eyes widen slightly. Eve gazes back at him, seeing the excitement build in him. “I think that would be a good idea. Will she be coming with you?”
“Yes.”
“Then quit dilly dallying.” She sighs, anxious to see him. “I want you home.”
He laughs softly. “Yes, My Queen. Your will is my command. I will be home shortly.”
She closes another box, signing softly at the stacks surrounding her. “I swear I need a storage unit, Samuel.” She laughs at his answering trill from her bedroom. “Whatever! Don’t even pretend that you are lost in there and I have to come find you!”“What if I am the one pretending?” Owen’s voice purrs from the doorway. “Would you come find me?”
She grins as she turns around. “Why don’t you go in there and find out?”
He steps more into the apartment, a cat carrier in his hand. “I’m afraid I might be the cause of an avalanche and never be heard from again.”
“As if!” She lifts a brow as he settles the carrier on the floor, opens the door, and a small tortishell female walks out. “Is this our new addition?”
“Her name is Moondancer.” Owen cautiously pulls the carrier away. She flips an ear in his direction, listening. “She has agreed to stay temporarily.”
Eve hears Samuel trill again, this time in question as he trots from the bedroom with his tail held high and a fake mouse in his teeth. He stops at the sight of the female, eyes going wide and nostrils flaring. He slowly approaches her, wariness in every move. When he finally gets close enough, he lays the mouse down at her feet. Before he can back away, the young tortie swipes at his face and growls low. Samuel tucks his tail and races for Eve’s lap, hiding his face in her arm.
“Now listen here, young girl!” Eve points at the female, her eyes beginning to glow softly with her anger. “Samuel does not need any of your attitude! He doesn’t know who you are or what you expect from him because he didn’t grow up like you with a family to teach him! If you can’t get over yourself and understand that, you can go back home!”
“Eve.” Owen’s voice warns as the tortie glares back at her, ears pinned.
Eve gathers Samuel into her arms and stands, glaring back. “No, Owen. She is in my home and on my rules. She can either learn to accept that or leave.”
The tortie flips her tail a few times, considering, before changing into a small teenage looking girl. She kneels down, beckoning Samuel to her. He slowly slinks from Eve’s arms, low to the ground and ready to flee. He stops far enough away that she cannot swipe at him again and trills softly in question. The girl trills back, cocking her head to the side. Owen steps over to Eve, watching as the two ‘talk’ to each other for several minutes. Finally, Samuel slinks closer and changes to a young boy.
The girl gently touches his cheek with one clawed hand, looking into his eyes. She finally begins to smooth his hair down his head with the other hand and a soft purring sound fills the air. Eve glances up at Owen and sees him smiling.
“So?” Eve steps closer, twining her fingers in his.
“I think all will be fine.” He pulls her closer and into his arms. “I tried explaining to her on the way here but I think she had to see it for herself. He doesn’t even know the simplest greeting. Maybe she will decide it would be best to teach him and stay.”
Samuel finally pulls away from the girl’s hand, changing back to a cat. He glances at her, tail curving over his back as if in question. The girl changes back as well and trills again. He yawns, stalking towards the bedroom with only one slight glance behind him. She follows, her tail tip waving back and forth in slight annoyance as she disappears.
Owen sighs heavily. “That went better than I had hoped for.” He gazes down at Eve, chuckling softly. “I’m just glad you didn’t have to get mad or anything.”
“Whatever!” She slaps at his arms and steps away.
He pulls her back into his arms, laughing out right. “You know what I mean, My Dear.” He kisses her softly. When he finally pulls away, he glances over the boxes again. “How much more needs to be done?”
“Kitchen, living room, and almost all of the bedroom is done. I left what I am currently using in the bathroom and dresser until I’m ready for everything to go.” She glances back towards the bedroom. “Some of the girls from the office came over and helped me pack.”
He leads her to the couch and settles her on his lap. “You can still unpack and keep the place if you wish.”
She smacks his arm hard. “Don’t even bring that up again! You make it sound like I’m going to change my mind any minute.”
He smirks, pulling her closer. “The option is still open. I won’t force you into this.”
“Too late now.” She turns in his lap, straddling his legs and she kisses him. “You’re stuck with me.”
“Good.” He deepens the kiss, pulling her tight against him.
The front door opens and laughing announces the arrival of her helpers. Allana glances towards the couch and sees Eve straddling Owen, kissing him passionately. She stops the other girls in the doorway, couching softly. “Sorry. Didn’t know you were busy. Want us to come back later?”
Eve laughs, climbing from Owen’s lap and straightening her clothes. “No, there’s still lots to do.”
Owen smiles at the ladies from across the back of the couch. “What is on the agenda for tonight?”
Lisa grins and settles a stack of boxes by the door. “Well, we have a box truck downstairs now and the boys will be here any minute to get everything down to it.”
Eve rolls her eyes and groans. “We’ll be here all night getting this all downstairs.”
Allana tosses a roll of tape at her head. “Oh please! We’ve got this! You can just sit back and relax!” She winks at Owen. “Besides, what’s left is work for the men to do and I’m sure Mr. Barrett wouldn’t want them showing him up.”
He chuckles softly. “I am sure I can do my share.”
Elisa puts more pop in the fridge. “Maybe we should figure out something to get everyone to eat.”
Fox steps into the apartment, David and Alexander only a step behind. “Already taken care of. The pizzas should be here in about an hour.”
Goliath, still in human form, walks in behind them with 2 other men Eve had not met yet. “It seems as if all of your help is here. Should we get started?”
Owen stands, rolling his sleeves up and grabbing the first box. “The sooner we start, the sooner we are done.”
David laughs, grabbing a box as well. “Don’t think I’m going to let you have all the fun, Old Man. “
