I was following my GPS to Luna and Luan’s food truck when I spotted a familiar building to my left. Making a snap decision I pulled into the parking lot of a towering office building with the words Mega Corp. on the front at the top. The severe face of the building made me feel like I was in a job interview already. I looked at my long sleeve orange shirt and my jeans where the hem was fraying at the bottom and the stains that dotted along my thighs. I sighed shaking my head. “I’m so underdressed I feel like this building is going to chew me up and spit me out like a bad piece of reject candy.”
I set my shoulders and walked into the building and straight up to the receptionist. “Excuse my name is Lincoln Loud I’m here to see Lori Loud. She’s my sister.” I said not knowing why I felt the need to clarify that to this woman. With my looks I could only be her brother or well her husband I suppose. I felt my face heat up at the thought of marrying Lori. I hadn’t felt that rush of love in a while and it was comforting.
The receptionist looked me up and down like she was inspecting an insect on the bottom of her overpriced pumps. “Do you have an appointment?” She asked in a sterile clipped down as if she was trying to speak as little to me as possible, probably trying to avoid sucking in my lower class air. I wanted to tell her she’s nothing but a glorified answering machine, but from the numerous glances she kept casting to the beefy security guard I thought better of it. “No I don’t, but I’m sure she wouldn’t mind seeing me. We haven’t talked in a while.” I said rubbing the back of my head in shame at that admission. “Sorry sir without an appointment there’s really nothing I can do.” I sighed looking down at my feet. “Thanks anyway.” I said turning to leave.
“Lincoln is that you?” I turned hearing my name coming face to face with my old friend Zach Gurdle. “Zach?” I asked trying to reconcile the nerdy kid with a bush of red hair and glasses to the man before me. He wore a dress shirt with a tie and black slacks sporting black and white Nikes. His former mane of red hair had been cut short no doubt in part to company regulations and he’d traded in his large childhood glasses for small full moon spectacles. “Yeah man I thought you moved out of town I haven’t seen you since uhh you know the funeral.” He looked down at the floor tapping the toe of his shoe against the tile.
I sighed knowing the dick I’d been at my parent’s funeral. “Yeah man I’m sorry about how I acted back then.” I said biting the inside of my cheek in guilt. “No man you were going through something crazy I understand, umm why are you here, looking for a job?” He asked looking me up and down no doubt thinking how underdressed I was. “Oh no I was hoping to talk to my sister, but can’t get through without an appointment.” Zach leaned around me looking at the reception. “Oh yeah we should really get a Beware of Dog sign put up.” He said before looking at me strangely. “You said your sister? Lori’s her name right?” I nodded my head wondering what Zach was up to. “Just stay right here I’ll handle this.” He said getting into an elevator and gave me a thumbs up as the door shut.
I stood there confused and a little embarrassed before going to sit in one of the chairs lining the wall. I was hyper aware of the stare the receptionist was giving me, it felt like she was boring a hole through the side of my head. Right as I was about to pick up and leave her phone ringed. She stopped her glaring long enough to answer it. I turned my head and watched as the stone face of the woman began to crumble leaving a pale faced little girl in its place. I couldn’t hear the whole conversation, but what I did hear was a series of Yes ma’am’s and fevered apologies before she hung and walked over to me.
“I’m so sorry Mr. Loud you can go right up and here is an access pass you can use anytime to enter the upper floors. Again Mr. Loud you have my sincerest apologies.” She said as she pressed a plastic swipe card into my hand and pretty much hurled me in the elevator. “Please express my apologies to Ms. Loud as well.” She said going so far as to bow to me as the door closed like in those Japanese comics I used to read.
All I could do was shake my head as I stuffed the pass into my wallet. “Lori hasn’t changed a bit.” I thought to myself as I rode the elevator all the way up to the thirtieth floor. I stepped out onto a floor with cubicles stretched as far as the eye could see. No offense to these men and women, but I could never see myself working in a box like them, but then again with the way I’ve been acting for the last three years I might as well have been living in a box. I stepped out onto the floor proceeding to walk to the row of offices against the back wall of the floor. As I did I saw Zach step out of one and walked over to me. “See I told you I’d take care of it, well to be fair your sister took care of most of it. That woman is terrifying.” He said patting me on the back. “Hey here’s my number we should hang out sometime. You me and the boys just like old times.” He said putting a piece of paper into my hand
I looked at Zach and smiled. “Sure thing buddy I owe you one anyway.” I said as he waved bye walking to the elevator. I smiled remembering the good times I’d shared with my friends growing up Clyde, Zach, Rusty and Liam my best friends in the world. I started walking to the office Zach had left from seeing Lori Loud Sales Manager on it. I felt a rush of pride surge within me at Lori’s success in her chosen field. I knocked on the door and was immediately answered by. “Come in.” I took a deep breath letting it out slow as I turned the handle and opened the door and closing it behind me when I came face to face with my sister for the first time in three years. She was sitting behind her desk eyes locked on the screen of the computer she was typing away at. “This better be important I’m expecting an important visitor.” She stated annoyed.
She looked beautiful her golden hair tied back in a ponytail showing off her slender neck. She wore very little make up, but that had always been Lori she’d never needed make up to look beautiful, at least not to me. She wore small stud earrings and maroon lipstick and was dressed in a light blue pantsuit the jacket of which was hanging on the back of her chair showing off the white long-sleeved blouse she wore underneath. I swallowed my tongue at the sight of her. I could hear the telltale sigh that escaped her nose letting anyone in the vicinity know she was losing her patience. “Cat got your tongu-!” She stopped her tirade as she pulled her eyes away from the screen to look at me and then it was her turn to be speechless.
We stared at one another for what felt like an eternity both frozen in time. Lori stood from her desk seeming to break the spell that held us both, as she took a step towards me I took one towards her. We met in front of the closed blinds of her window. Lori made the first move reaching out and stroking my face. I could see the tears brimming in her eyes and it shredded my heart. I did what I always did when my sisters were about to cry. I brought her into a hug, cradling her head into the crook of my neck. I could feel her body hitch against mine as I stroked her back.
“I know Lori it’s been a long time way too long, and I’m sorry for that. I am so sorry it hurts.” I said holding her tighter as I felt my own eyes start to grow moist. I blinked away the tears; this wasn’t about me it’d been about me long enough already this was about what Lori needed. “I’m just so happy to see you Lincoln it’s been so hard these past three years. I missed you so much and I just didn’t know what to do, so I called Clyde.” I nodded. “It’s ok Lori you did the right thing. I’ve been in a dark place for a long time now, but I’m trying to pull myself out of it.” I said lifting her head up looking at her tear streaked face. I used my thumbs to wipe the tears from her face. “I missed you too so much Lori, but I just didn’t know what to do. Mom and dad were gone and all of a sudden I was a father with more kids than I knew what to deal with. I snapped under the pressure, but thanks to you calling Clyde I’m getting better or well I’m trying to. It’s slow going.” I sat down on the outside of her desk and Lori took the chair beside me grabbing my hand and holding it between the both of hers. “Lincoln I knew this wouldn’t be something we could fix in a day. It could take months, and that’s fine as long as you’re better we can wait.” She said stroking my hand.
“ I talked to Lynn and them, suffice it to say I’m not their favorite person but I expected that.” I said smiling sadly. Lori sighed next to me. “They’ll get over it Lincoln, but just like you need time so do they.” I nodded looking at Lori seeing a question in her eyes and I knew what it was, but I couldn’t answer it. Not yet. “I don’t know Lori.” I said to her unasked question before I leaned over the chair and kissed her pressing my lips lightly to hers for a moment reliving the powerful love I’d shared with her. “I don’t know if things can be the same Lori, I hope they can be better, but I don’t know what better looks like yet.” I stood up looking down at the stunned expression on her face. “I’m going to see Luna, Luan, and Leni today as well, and then go talk to Clyde. I’m hoping after speaking with all of you and hashing it out with Clyde I can come to a consensus on what to do next. Just be patient with me for now Lori. I promise I’m going to do right by every one of you.” I said kissing her forehead before leaving her office. “Oh and your receptionist says she’s so sorry.” I said smiling at her.
Once I was in the elevator I exhaled a deep breath it felt like I was breathing out my soul, painful, but at the same time a relief. I exited the elevator seeing the once cold receptionist smile desperately at me as I left I felt so sorry for her that I waved and smiled showing her there were no hard feelings. I walked out to my car and getting in starting up my GPS again I pulled out of the parking lot and continued on.
