"This place has the best noodles. Nice of them to make us some in the middle of the night." Korra said as she sat in a booth in a small diner. It was late at night, only a few hours shy of the sun coming up. Across from her was Nanulak, who simply smiled as he ate his bowl of rice and vegetables.
She began sneaking out of the house a few times a week to meet with Nanulak and sometimes his resistance group. She got into the habit of applying make-up and wearing her hair down so she was less recognizable. It seemed to work for the most part, even if she wasn't particularly gifted with make-up. Asami showed her how to use foundation. Korra taught herself how to apply lipstick and eyeliner. So far, no one's stopped her in the streets.
Korra's pregnancy progressed even further through the months. Her stomach was fairly huge, bigger than the doctor anticipated but he assured her everything was fine and healthy. She had to wear an especially large maternity tank and pants. It was difficult moving around. Even getting out of the bed was a hassle. Her and Asami often slept with one another in case one had trouble moving.
Even still, she managed to squeeze her stomach underneath the table so she could enjoy what she thought were well-deserved noodles.
"Are you and Asami doing okay?" Nanulak asked gently.
Korra slurped her noodles loudly. She may have looked like a lady but she had the same manners as always. "He actually hasn't been touching us as much as he used to. There are some nights he doesn't even come home."
Nanulak crossed his arms shrugged. "I guess that's good news." He watched her finish her noodle soup and lay down on her back in the booth seat with her legs hanging over the outer edge.
"You probably shouldn't be laying like that." He lectured.
"Why's that?"
"Come on. Let's get you home before anyone notices you're missing."
Korra gave herself a slight nod before attempting to raise herself off the seat.
'Maybe this really was a bad idea.'
Nanulak had already gotten up from his seat and was watching her struggle.
"Uh, I could use some help." She called to him. She heard him chuckle before he grabbed both of her hands and hoisted her up to a sitting position. She took a deep breath and gave a nod before he helped to pull her to her feet. Finally on her feet, she sighed and looked at him. He was giving her an amusing smile, which made her blush. "Thanks." She mumbled as she pulled her hands away from his.
"You're kind of adorable pregnant." He said as they made their way to the exit.
Korra assumed he meant the fact that she had to practically waddle to get around. "Being pregnant doesn't feel adorable."
Nanulak held the door open for her and she was hit with the cool air rushing to her face. The warmer season was approaching but it was still cool enough to wear a jacket. Her current jacket could barely fit over her stomach but at least it wasn't constricting.
"You're not in any pain, are you?" Nanulak asked as they walked to his satomobile parked on the curb.
"Besides random contractions, terrible back pain, and the urge to pee every five minutes, I think things are going swell given the circumstances." Korra responded.
'It sure beats Amon on top of me every other night.' She thought to herself.
"I'm glad it's not anything worse." He opened the car for her once they reached his vehicle.
Korra gave him a small nod of appreciation and carefully slid herself into the car. She was ashamed that even such a simple task broke her out into a sweat. It was exhausting moving around most of the time. Nanulak had always insisted she stay home during their meetings but she never listened. Despite her current condition, it was all going to be worth it in the end.
She groaned when Nanulak entered the car on the other side.
"Is something wrong?" He asked.
Korra gently rubbed her stomach. "The baby's kicking again."
"Really?"
She pulled her jacket and shirt up to reveal her bare stomach. Nanulak watched in awe at the slight movements underneath her skin.
"I'm not gonna lie, that's kind of freaky." He responded.
She let out a soft chuckle. "It does look pretty weird."
"Does it hurt?" He said as he started the car.
"No, just feels weird sometimes." She said as she pulled down her clothing.
Nanulak began to pull the car away from the curb and drive off. The city was quiet compared to its earlier nightlife. Equalists still patrolled the city and a few businesses remained open to serve them. The quietness was pretty soothing to Korra, however.
"So, I've been thinking." He started. "You remember how you found those letters about the Equalists being in contact with the Earth Queen?"
"Yeah." Korra responded.
"I haven't shared this with the group yet but I had some uh, fellow journalists-"
"Spies." Korra interrupted.
"Hey, that's only at night. So I had some journalists from the Earth Kingdom look into it. Turns out, the Queen's been in contact with Amon since the beginning of the rebellion."
"You've got to be kidding me. What could she possibly have to do with all this?"
Nanulak hummed thoughtfully for a second. "I'm not sure. There's some rumors and they're not good, but they're not confirmed either. I don't want to say anything to the group until I have all the facts. If you could do some more snooping in his study, that'd help me out a lot."
"Ruffling through papers. It's my specialty."
"No one's nosy like you."
Korra laughed lightheartedly. "Just drive. I need to use the bathroom."
The house was quiet when Korra arrived. The sun still wasn't up yet, which meant she could get some sleep before she had to drag herself out of bed and do Amon's chores.
She carefully half-waddled herself through the hallway and into Asami's bedroom. It was no surprise that Asami was already sleeping, curled up against one of the pillows in an attempt to get a peaceful night of sleep. Even after going through such constant abuse and being pregnant, Asami always looked beautiful to Korra. In a way, she was jealous. Asami's body didn't seem to change much during her pregnancy, even her stomach was smaller than Korra's despite the doctor claiming she wasn't much farther behind from Korra. Her skin was always glowing, while Korra's had random bumps that came and went. Though, Korra was mostly jealous over the fact Asami's breasts had barely changed.
'They're just always in the way.' She thought to herself as she silently moved into the bathroom.
After relieving herself in the bathroom and changing into her nightclothes, Korra finally crawled into bed and snuggled underneath the blanket next to Asami. It was about as safe as she was going to feel in the house.
"Where were you?" She heard Asami quietly ask from the other side of the bed.
Korra attempted to turn over on her other side to look at Asami, but deemed it too much work. "I was out walking."
"Alone? In the middle of the night? While pregnant?"
"I needed the fresh air."
"So you leave me alone with...him?"
Korra stayed silent for a while, unsure of how to answer. "I'm sorry." When she didn't get a response, she figured it was time to sleep. She assumed the guilt of leaving Asami with Amon would make it harder for her to fall asleep.
But she was wrong.
Asami was usually the first to rise not long after the sun began to peek through the curtains. Waking up was a long process for her. Her stomach wasn't nearly as big as Korra's but it still made it difficult for her to rise out of the bed. Normally, it would take her about five minutes to even muster up the energy to sit up in the bed, then another few minutes to grab the nightstand as support to stand up.
Once she managed to finally stand, she carried herself to the bathroom to get herself ready for the day, which consisted of relieving herself at least three times before she finally was able to step out of the bathroom to put her clothes on.
Her regular clothes could no longer fit with her unwanted stomach in the way. She opted to wear a burgundy maternity robe with ruffled sleeves at the end. It managed to come to her knees, although she would have liked it longer. She felt more vulnerable and naked the more her pregnancy progressed.
With her clothes and her make-up on to cover her bruises and scars, Asami felt she was as ready as she'd ever be to face another day. She took one last look at Korra, who was sprawled out on the bed. She had a weird pained look on her face, though Asami brushed it off as her having another nightmare. They were quite common between both of them.
Asami quietly stepped out of the bedroom. She usually refrained from making unnecessary noises in hopes Amon would stay asleep longer.
Today, she wasn't so lucky. She noticed him standing outside of his door a few feet away. She froze, trying to avoid eye contact but failed.
He motioned with his finger for her to come before he opened his door and disappeared into his bedroom. Asami unwilling followed.
"You stupid, incompetent little-"
Korra could do nothing as she laid on the floor. Her body was too heavy to lift. Even her eyelids had trouble keeping open. She saw darkness and felt pain as his feet and hands pounded into her flesh.
Everything was sore and tense on her body. It was unbearable.
He finally yanked her up. Her eyes snapped open. All she could see was the mask in front of her.
"You're useless now!"
She watched him remove the mask before gasping.
"I'm sorry, dad!" She cried.
She felt something stabbing her flat stomach. She looked down and saw a black dagger driven into her flesh and blood pouring out.
Tears welled up in her eyes as the pain intensified. "Thank you..."
Korra's eyes snapped open. Her stomach still felt the pain from her dream. It was too intense for her. She was even sweating. She begrudgingly rose from the bed, using the nearby nightstand as support.
"You're active today." She winced as she stood up, placing a hand on her belly. Her stomach gave another twinge of pain. She was used to minor pains coming and going but these felt harsher.
She looked down and paled when she noticed her night pants were soaked from the crotch down.
It was a less than ideal way to start the day. Amon decided he wanted some fun before the day started and unfortunately, that included Asami.
She was rubbing his hardened member as he laid on his bed, thoroughly enjoying the sensation while she suffered.
Being between his legs was hard on her back and knees but she found the strength to suffer through it.
He had his hand on her head, obviously wanting her to start using her mouth. She gagged at the thought.
"AGH!"
Asami stopped and turned her head towards the door, ready to run to the source of the noise.
Amon, however, gripped a handful of her hair, making her cry out softly.
"I think Korra's in labor!" She pleaded.
"Then you better finish quickly."
She took a deep breath.
He smiled.
He always got what he wanted.
'Alright, calm down. Maybe it's just false labor.' She thought to herself as she slowly and painfully waddled her way to the kitchen in search of Asami. She was lying to herself. She knew her water broke.
When she found the front of the house empty, she carried herself to the table to sit down. Something told her Asami was with Amon and she silently cursed that man for having urges at such a terrible time.
She took deep breaths, calming herself down enough to at least think more clearly. Her contractions weren't terribly painful but they were extremely uncomfortable.
She was already sweating. She wanted to lay down and rest but her instincts told her there wouldn't be any rest for a while.
Another contraction hit and she cried out again.
Wiping the bead of sweat forming on her forehead, she stood up and began to waddle her way to the front door. She didn't feel like waiting for Amon's release.
It took longer than Asami wanted for Amon to finally be finished with her. He started dozing off on the bed while she rushed out of the room as fast as she could. The first thing she did was call out for Korra's name. When she received no response, the dread settled into her gut.
She hoping to find Korra in one of the rooms but she wasn't surprised either when she found all of them empty. Had she not been so worried, she surely would have been angry with Amon.
'She must have gone to a doctor.' Her thoughts were almost confirmed when she peeked outside the front door and saw Naga nowhere in sight. Calling her name resulted in no response.
Slamming the front door shut, she quickly made her way back to Amon's bedroom, where she found him dozing off with his mask lying next to him.
She winced when she noticed his member still hanging out.
'How disgusting.'
She made her way over to him. "Amon." She called his name. He didn't stir. When she was by his bedside, she began to shake him by the shoulder gently. "Amon."
His eyes snapped opened and he looked irritated. "What?"
"I need the keys to your satomobile."
She heard him groan as he rubbed between his eyes with a thumb and index finger. "Why?"
"Because Korra's in labor with your child."
He grumbled a bit, tucked himself back into his pants and sat up in his bed. Asami took a step back, watching as he groggily opened his nightstand drawer and pulled out a key from on top his stack of random items.
"You have one hour." He instructed as he handed the key over.
Asami carefully pulled it from his hand. "But she could be in labor for hours!"
"I don't care. One hour."
Korra had ridden around on Naga for a while, almost as if aimlessly. Her contractions weren't any more frequent but they were still uncomfortable. While she was in her quiet misery, the city still moved around her, though in slow motion in her mind.
Eventually, she made out the words "Medic" on one of the smaller buildings and nudged for Naga to stop in front of it.
Getting down from Naga was just as difficult as climbing on her. She swung her legs to one side and gently eased herself down, grabbing handfuls of Naga's fur out of fear of sliding too fast and falling. She knew Naga wasn't pleased about having her fur pulled but the last thing she wanted to do was hurt herself.
She hadn't even pulled herself off of Naga before two Equalists suddenly approached her.
"You there. Where do you think you're going?" One of the males asked her.
They were intimidating, fully dressed in their uniforms with their masks but Korra wasn't in the mood to be harassed by Amon's men.
"I'm going somewhere that's none of your business." Korra hissed as she placed a hand on her stomach and began to waddle past them into the clinic.
The moment one of them grabbed her arm, she took a swing at his face.
"Don't touch me!" She yelled as she was unceremoniously turned around and restrained by her hands.
Naga growled before grabbing one of the men by the back of his shirt with her teeth and flinging him backward into the air.
"Hey, whoa there!" The other Equalist quickly released Korra's hands to throw his up in defense. He back-peddled as Naga approached him slowly, the threat clear in her growls.
Using the distraction as an opportunity, Korra quietly carried herself into the clinic, ignoring the screams of the Equalist as he ran off. Or she assumed he ran off.
The inside of the clinic was sickeningly white and bright. The first room was small with chairs on either side for patients. At the end of the room were the reception desk and a brown-haired older woman talking on the phone with who Korra assumed to be a client. Beyond the desk were two wide doorways to lead to an array of hallways and patient rooms of which medical professionals busily wondered through. Only a few patients were sitting in the waiting room but things seemed incredibly slow.
'I'll make them speed up.' She thought as she approached the desk. The smell of cleaning solution suddenly hit her nose.
"Yes, how may I help you?" The receptionist asked as she hung up the phone. She had a nasal voice that annoyed Korra, which she thought was caused by the fact her contractions were now on the brink of driving her insane.
"I need a doctor. Now." Korra said, suddenly realizing just how sweaty she was when she wiped her forehead.
"Do you have an appointment?"
"No."
"Then you will have to wait. Our doctors are very busy." The receptionist brushed her off as she turned her attention to her paperwork.
"You don't understand. I need one right now. I'm-"
"No, you don't understand!" The receptionist snapped. "Everyone else has been waiting patiently, you need to learn how to be patient as well."
"But-"
"What makes you so special that you should get treatment before everyone else?"
"If you would-"
"Now you sit down and wait or you don't see a doctor at all!"
Korra reached over the desk and grabbed the lady her shirt, hoisting her up so they were face-to-face. "Listen here. I have been in labor all morning. If I don't see a healer or doctor right now, you're going to need one!"
She wasn't normally this aggressive but seeing the receptionist shake after finally noticing her bulging stomach gave her a great sense of satisfaction. It even seemed to help alleviate some of the pain from her contractions.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. I'll go find a doctor right away."
Asami wasn't one to complain about the traffic of the city, but on this particular day, it seemed like people were purposely trying to slow her down. She thought it'd be easy enough to at least find Naga, given her large size but half an hour of searching yielded nothing.
Every few feet she drove was met with either a stopped vehicle or people crossing the street. It frustrated her to the point where she contemplated just running over everyone.
'This is taking too long. I won't have enough time to check every clinic and hospital in the city. This would be easier with Mako and Bolin. Even Tenzin and his family...'
She thought sadly as she gently pressed the gas pedal once the street was cleared.
'It would be easier in a group...' She thought.
She gave a frustrated groan as another person suddenly made their way across the street. She honked her horn a few times, pressing as hard as she could as if it'd make the sound any louder.
‘This is ridiculous.' Asami put the Satomobile in reverse and began backing up to make a U-turn. The car wheels screeched lightly when she began to turn but unfortunately, the screeches were short-lived when another vehicle hit her driver side before she could complete her turn.
"Take a deep breath and relax."
Korra was glad she was finally in a delivery room but she was nervous. She wasn't ready for anything that was about to happen and all the responsibility that was going to come with it. She especially wasn't ready for the pain that struck her every so often. It made her sweaty and nauseous.
A nurse came in and had her lean forward as best she could while she injected her with something right in her spine. The needle was a lot less painful than her contractions. She barely even noticed it.
As the nurse gently guided Korra to lay back down on her bed, Korra took another deep breath as another contraction struck her.
"The doctor will be in shortly." She heard the nurse say. "Just relax. The medicine will kick-in in about fifteen minutes."
Korra took a deep breath and closed her eyes. All she could think about is how much she wanted to strangle Amon with his innards and how much she loathed the idea of mothering his child but she tried to force herself to push down her thoughts for now. She tried to convince herself to just let her instincts take over. She couldn't do anything about it now. She was just stressing herself out.
The room light seemed blinding when she opened her eyes. The room was white and cold. Everything seemed to be metal, except for the bed she was on and a chair sitting next to it. The medical cart sitting in the corner made her a little nervous. There was a lot of instruments she never saw before but she assured herself that nothing would go wrong.
A soft knock at the door riled up her nerves again. As if her heart wasn't beating hard enough from her labor.
"Come in." She tried not to sound timid.
What a relief she felt when she saw Nanulak's face peak from behind the now ajar door.
"Hey." He said quietly. "Did I miss anything?"
Korra smiled through her discomfort. "Just some contractions." She said as she adjusted herself on the bed to sit up straighter.
Nanulak let himself in the room and stepped towards Korra's bed. "Are you doing alright?" He asked quietly.
"Yeah. The nurse gave me medicine. I can already feel it starting to work. I'm just ready for all this to be over." She sighed. "I think."
He placed a warm hand on her shoulder and gave her a soothing rub. "Worry about the labor for now. We'll figure things out along the way."
The door opened up once again, but this time with an older man dressed in green operating scrubs. He had a white mask around his mouth but it didn't hide the forming wrinkles along his eyes and forehead.
He seemed to be in a hurry as he quickly scrolled over his clipboard while entering the room.
"Alright, miss….Kadlak."
"It's Korra." She responded, glancing over at Nanulak who took a seat next to her bed.
"Right, right. Let's see how far you're dilated."
Nanulak could see the fear spread on Korra's face when the doctor went over to the metal cart in the corner to put on a pair of gloves.
"Prop your feet on the metal rests please." The doctor instructed.
Korra looked nervously at the metal apparatuses at the end of either side of the bed. She hadn't given much thought to their use. It made sense now but she was still hesitant to do it.
"Come on, it's not going to hurt. I'm just going to take a look to make sure everything's fine." He assured her.
She glanced over at Nanulak, who gave her a small nod.
She took a deep breath and positioned her feet on the rests so she was as comfortable as possible. She didn't consider how exposed she'd feel in such a position.
The doctor was quick to check her. She felt one hand gently push against her nether region, which startled her but as quickly as he was checking her, he was finished.
"You're pretty close. I'd say another 10 minutes and you might ready for pushing."
"Well, that's terrifying." Korra said.
"You'll be fine." Nanulak replied.
The doctor removed his gloves and tossed them in a bin next to the bed. "I will check back in a few minutes. Excuse me." He nodded before heading out the door.
"Hey..." Korra said a few seconds after the doctor left. "Could you go get me some food?"
Asami could hear the mumbles in the background as she slipped in and out of consciousness. She didn't know where she was or who was talking, but she didn't care. The only thing she cared about was the soreness and aches stretching across her body. It made her forget her pregnancy woes entirely.
Time was irrelevant to her. She didn't know if a minute or an hour passed, nor did she care. The only thing she cared about was the extreme throbbing in her frontal lobe whenever her consciousness was aroused right before slipping back into darkness.
"I think Mako would love to see exactly what you do to me."
He said to her one day when he forced her to straddle his lap. She avoided eye contact with him as she forced her body up and down, trying her best to ignore his hands that were squeezing her backside.
She couldn't ignore the sounds they made, however, when their flesh rapidly collided.
Or when he moaned malign things to her.
"Your father always bragged about how brilliant his daughter was in his workshop but you belong in my bed."
She didn't think to correct him on the fact that they were on his loveseat in his room.
A loud slap on her rear caused her to move her hips faster. She learned early on that the faster she gave him what he wanted, the sooner her torture would be over.
He slammed his hips into hers in response. She saw his naked face tilt backward out the corner of her eye while she stared at his personal library.
He groaned. She gasped.
She felt his hand on her 5-month swollen stomach as their hips slowed.
"Your father is so proud of you."
Asami's eyes snapped open. She didn't recognize her environment. It was sickeningly white and bright, from the walls to the tiled floor to the sheets that covered her on an over-sized bed. There was nothing in the room except a metal chair in the corner and a door adjacent to the bed right next to the chair. A large window on the opposite side was covered by white curtains that only let in a glimpse of the outside light. Most of the lighting came from the tubed lighting on the ceiling, though all the light didn't warm up the room at all.
After she adjusted to the unusually bright lights, she sat up in the bed, which was a huge mistake because it made her head start pounding in pain again.
"Ugh. What happened?" She said to herself as she rubbed her head. Then she noticed the large bruises on her left arm. "What…"
She peeled the covers away from her body and saw she was wearing a hospital gown. From what she could see past her stomach, her legs were also bruised and her leg one had a large gash in it. She briefly ran her hands over her stomach. She didn't feel any pain and nothing was sore there.
‘Seems the baby's fine.'
"Baby…" She whispered. "Oh no. Where's Korra?"
She didn't remember what caused her injuries but all she needed to remember was Korra being in labor.
Her legs swung off the bed and carried her to the door as fast as they could.
"Amon's going to kill me." She said as she opened the door. She was unable to take a step out, however, as she was met face-to-back with a person standing in front of her door.
Another one of Amon's Equalists was standing guard in front of the room. He turned around when he felt her collide.
"Ma'am, please get back in bed." He said behind his mask.
"Where is Korra?" Asami responded.
"You are not well enough to be out of bed. I have been instructed to keep you here until-"
"I demand you take me to Korra right now!" She was getting agitated. It seemed Amon was always getting in the way, one way or another.
The man put his hands up and spoke calmly. "With all due respect, you need to rest. You were just in an accident, you're pregnant, and Amon will kill me if I just let you wander around. We have eyes on Korra and she's fine. She'll probably have her baby in the next hour or so, so just lay down and take it easy."
He made sense but Asami could not stop worrying about Korra giving birth alone. "Please, I have to see her." Her voice almost broke.
"You'll see her. After you rest. Please, just lay down. They're just going to give you another sedative if you don't."
She quickly huffed. How was she supposed to rest when she was worrying herself to death?
Asami took a quick glance behind her. "Fine." She quickly agreed. As she turned around and began to close the door, the Equalist spoke one last time.
"Don't try the windows. They're locked."
She sighed and closed the door. "Of course they are."
"Alright Ms….Kokoum. Push whenever you're ready."
This was it.
The moment she dreaded.
She didn't even care that her doctor couldn't remember her name.
Her instincts took over and all she could think about was contractions and pushing.
Nanulak stood by her bed, patting cold, wet towels on her forehead.
The doctor and nurse stood in front of her legs, towel ready to receive whatever came out of her.
The pain wasn't nearly as bad as she thought it'd be since the nurse gave her another injection in her back. She didn't know what it was but it took the edge off and more from her labor pains.
She imagined her labor being loud, rushed, and violent but the room was quiet save for her random groans and huffs. Everything seemed slow, from the time it took for her to dilate to how long it seemed it took her to push the baby out.
But she wasn't complaining. The best part was that Amon wasn't there.
She followed her contractions, pushing when the urge struck her. She felt the baby moving along, although it was still too slow for her. She wanted to get it over with but it seemed the baby had other plans.
"You're doing good. I see the head coming." She heard the doctor say behind his surgical mask.
With labored breaths, Korra pushed through the pain. Her body soaked in sweat, half from the irritating contractions and half from how hard she found herself needing to push to move the baby along.
"Keep going." Nanulak encouraged as he dabbed her forehead with a cold towel.
Korra sat up in the bed and gave another hard push, practically lifting her lower body off the bed. She felt like she was going to strain herself if the baby didn't come soon.
"Almost there." The doctor mentioned.
Another contraction.
Another push.
And more rapid breaths from Korra.
"I've got the head. Give it one more push."
Korra gave a glance to Nanulak.
One last push and the baby finally slipped out.
"It's a boy." The doctor said rather unenthusiastically. "A big boy."
She threw herself back against the bed with the biggest sigh of relief she'd ever given.
There was just a brief cry and then silence.
She sat her head up slightly, feeling her skin suddenly grow cold and her heart race faster than when she was just pushing. "Why isn't he crying?"
"He fell asleep." The doctor said.
"What?" Korra whispered.
The doctor cradled the baby in his arms and gently began to tap the baby's cheeks.
She finally relaxed when she heard her baby fuss which quickly turned into crying.
"You did good." Nanulak said as he laid a freshly wet towel on Korra's head.
Once everything was cleaned, Korra was handed her still crying bundle, wrapped tightly in a blanket. She surprised herself by being oddly excited to hold him.
She couldn't put into words how she felt when she first held him. It was bittersweet, with more emphasis on bitter. She peered down into his eyes while subconsciously trying to soothe him.
He had his eyes.
‘Here comes the tears…'
"He has your eyes." Nanulak said before the first tear could fall.
"You think so?"
They both looked at the now calmed newborn, who seemed as though he was trying to look around.
"What are you going to name him?"
Truth be told, she hadn't given names a thought. The thought of becoming a mother was surreal.
"I don't know."
"You could name him after me."
Korra gave a half-hearted laugh. "I've always liked Toklo."
Nanulak folded his arms and rubbed his smooth chin. "Hm. I guess it's alright."
"What? Do you have a better one?" Korra rubbed her index finger against her baby's skin, surprised at how soft it felt. Fragile, even.
"No, I think Toklo's fine."
Korra shifted the baby closer to her face. "Welcome to the world, Toklo. I must warn you, it's a mess."
The birth of his baby was something Amon pushed out of his mind. It wasn't his concern and he only entertained the thought for a few seconds.
He had more pressing matters than whatever Korra was going through.
Air Temple Island had made the perfect place for the Equalist headquarters. It was isolated from the rest of the city, which made it harder to access. They were quick to move in their technology and build upon what the air nomads had started.
What was once the sleeping quarters for the ladies was now what Amon considered the control center, where most of the phones and other, much larger, machines of communication were stored. Other technical things were going on but Amon didn't care enough to ask the specifics.
The men's sleeping quarters had the inner walls torn down to be remodeled into another workshop for Hiroshi and the inventors underneath him to design and construct new inventions, such as smaller, sleeker mechanical suits.
The main dining hall held their meetings, and snacks for them.
Inside their new meeting room was a U-shaped table surrounded by what Amon considered to be his top Equalists. He sat at the head, of course, with his Lieutenant by his side.
"Our scouts and spies finally sent us a report on Zuko. They have confirmed that no one knows about Zuko's request but us. A meeting with him would prove generally safe, although there are concerns about his dragon." His Lieutenant spoke during their meeting.
"I suggest we ban the dragon." One of the Equalists commented.
"He won't agree to a meeting without his dragon. It's probably his only way of transportation if Izumi is unaware of his intentions." Another one responded.
"If he's willing to sneak around, he should be willing to leave the dragon." The other responded.
"He's not going to meet us unprotected. He's not a stupid man." The Lieutenant mentioned.
One of the things that made Amon a great leader was his listening skills. That did not mean, however, that he particularly enjoyed hearing people's rambling.
"Zuko may bring his dragon." Amon interrupted. He folded his hands behind his chin as he rested his elbows on the table. His eyes quickly glanced over his audience. "Hiroshi and Varrick can design a containment for the dragon."
"I imagine we won't tell the former Firelord this little detail." The Lieutenant said.
Amon veered his eyes towards the Lieutenant. "Precisely."
Out of the corner of his eye, Amon noticed a small figure entering the room, one of the newer, younger Equalists. His main job was relaying messages and running small errands.
Amon's interest was piqued when the boy nervously went up to him. The meeting was quiet as Amon was handed a small note.
His eyes gave no emotions as he unfolded it and carefully read it. It only took him a few seconds before he handed it back to the messenger.
"Aren't you going-" The small male began.
"No." Amon quickly said before he waved him away.
"Is everything alright?" The Lieutenant leaned over and whispered. He went ignored as Amon continued the meeting.
"Schedule a meeting with Zuko before the summit with the Earth Queen." Amon instructed.
"Should we inform her of the meeting?" One of the Equalists inquired.
"No. We'll keep her out of it for now. Shield any rumors or news of it from the public as well." Amon responded.
"I imagine any talk of communication with Zuko would create unnecessary tension." The Lieutenant agreed. "Word may end up traveling to the Fire Nation."
"You mean like how rumors of Equalists in the Earth Kingdom sparked a resistance movement?" One of the Equalists muttered.
"Sparked. A. What?" The intrigue in Amon's voice only served to mask any anger he suddenly felt. This was not information he had known prior, which means someone failed to do their job. Incompetence was not something he typically tolerated.
"Sir, I filed the report. There's been an uprising in the Earth Kingdom lead by a uh, Ko...Ka…" One of the Equalists struggled to remember, placing his hands on his temples to massage them.
"Kuvira." Another one answered.
It was silent while Amon thought. His fingers lightly drummed against the table while everyone patiently awaited his words. He was processing this new information and trying to control his anger.
"It's only minor, sir. We don't expect it to gain much traction." Another Equalist chimed.
"I was also unaware of this...minor detail." The Lieutenant finally said.
"What is her end goal?" Amon asked.
"It seems she's assembled a small team in hopes of preventing our presence in the Earth Kingdom. Our scouts have sent reports about the anxiousness in the citizens. Kuvira's been taking advantage of the distress to assemble a team of benders who vow to keep us out and challenge the Earth Queen. Politically speaking."
"I want someone to find that report. Right. Now." Amon threatened.
There was a small sense of satisfaction as he watched his subordinates scramble from their seats and argue among themselves about the missing reports.
"I will question the scouts about this Kuvira person." He heard the Lieutenant say while he emerged from his seat.
The room quietly emptied and Amon was alone in his thoughts, as he preferred. Although the silence didn't last long when he heard Hiroshi's voice.
"Amon, we need to talk."
He wasn't in a particular mood to talk to Hiroshi but given how much of an asset he was during the rebellion, he always obliged.
Amon sat on top of the meeting table with his feet propped on a chair. Hiroshi stood across of him. Amon could feel his erratic heart rate. It almost irritated him.
"I can't do this anymore." Hiroshi said.
"Elaborate." Amon draped his arms along his upper legs as he leaned in slightly closer.
"This rebellion--It wasn't worth my daughter. I can't bring myself to continue involvement in this knowing I'm losing my daughter every day. I'm sorry but Asami…"
"When you pledged your allegiance to the cause, you were very well aware of the sacrifices we all had to make."
"I am aware that-"
"You are not the only one with a strained relationship. You gave your word that you would help us purify this world for the next generation to come."
"There are-"
"Are you going back on your word, Hiroshi?" Tension suddenly rose between the two. Hiroshi struggled to keep his composure but truth be told, Amon was a frightful man even if you were an ally.
"Yes. I am."
Amon pushed the chair to the side with his foot before he pulled himself off the table to approach Hiroshi closer. "You should be very careful about making me an enemy. Your daughter is still under my care."
To say Hiroshi looked flabbergasted was an understatement. "Are you threatening me? Using my daughter?"
"My wife will not be associating with my enemies. Make your pick. You're either an ally or an enemy."
Though he knew what a hard man he was, Hiroshi never thought of Amon ever being harsh with him. It made him wonder how he acted towards Asami. "She will be staying with me." He said quietly. "I'm picking her up from the clinic. She can stay as long as she wishes. I'm pulling my warehouses out. Keep the mecha-suits but I'm retiring and spending time with my daughter."
Amon didn't stop him when he walked off. He planned for this, afterall. It was the downside of working with people; Eventually, emotions would get in the way.
But he wasn't going to let emotions ruin any of his plans. He'd let Hiroshi think whatever made him happy, for now.
Asami had more than one use in his life.
Korra had expected the soreness and exhaustion after her labor, she just didn't realize how it intense it'd be. Once the numbness wore off, she found herself dozing off with her newborn sleeping peacefully on her chest.
Normally, her sleep would be plagued with nightmares, but today it was just darkness as she descended into a deep slumber. A welcomed relief.
When she finally came to, she had forgotten where she was and what happened just a few hours earlier for a few seconds. As the events rushed back into her memory, she realized her baby wasn't with her anymore.
The pain in the lower half of her body shot through her when she frantically sat up and looked around her immediate surrounding.
"Don't worry, he's here." She heard a voice by the door say.
When she looked up and saw Nanulak holding her baby, she almost cried.
"I was worried Amon might have taken him." Korra said.
"He woke up and you were still sleeping." Nanulak said as he approached her and carefully placed Toklo back in his mother's arms. "I changed him but I think he might be getting hungry."
Korra's arms eagerly opened to receive her newborn. He was bundled up in a blanket and all she could see was his round face and blue eyes. When she held him close, he began to fuss.
"Hey now." Korra cooed but her newborn began to cry.
"Try feeding him." Nanulak suggested as he made his way over back to the chair.
"Right…feed him." Korra said nervously. She was unsure of what to do exactly. It seemed like an easy enough task. In her head.
She glanced back over to Nanulak, who simply pointed to his chest before unfolding a newspaper that had been previously on the floor.
Toklo cried harder. "Okay, okay." She said quickly as she slid one side of her hospital gown down until her chest was bare before switching her baby to her other arm.
She almost panicked when he didn't immediately latch but after some encouragement, his cries finally stopped.
"I got it. I think." She said to herself as she watched her son feed quietly. "Any interesting news?" She asked after a few minutes.
"Racing results." Nanulak replied, his eyes skimming over the newspaper articles. "A new factory opened up. Nothing too interesting in the papers. There are much more interesting things happening outside the news."
"Like what?"
"The Earth Queen two-timing Amon." He said as he folded the newspaper and placed it on the floor.
Korra whipped her head in his direction. "What?"
"That evidence you found in Amon's room, the Earth Queen does have an alliance with the Equalists. She laid claim on Republic City in exchange for a trained army unit of chi-blockers. It's why neither of the Water Tribes, or the Fire Nation for that matter, has made any moves involving Republic City. It's hush-hush in the Earth Kingdom. But…" Nanulak thought for a moment.
"But…?"
"She's also been in secret cahoots with the Fire Nation." He stood up and paced briefly. "Here's what I do know. Firelord Izumi and the Earth Queen have been talking about allying. It's not official but they are in talks."
"The Earth Kingdom doesn't need the Fire Nation. Their military is big enough to handle one city."
"When everyone is together, yes, but there's been an uprising lead by a woman named Kuvira. After Amon took over Republic City, rumors started spreading about Equalists infiltrating the Earth Kingdom. The queen refused to speak on it so Kuvira started a militia. It divided the nation and they currently don't have the resources or manpower to quell the uprising and reclaim Republic City. Her militia got a lot bigger than expected. It's almost like a civil war now."
"So she needs the Fire Nation's manpower."
"Precisely, although I'm not sure what the Fire Nation is getting out of this. Izumi wanted to stay neutral during all this, so whatever the Earth Queen offers has to be good and important enough for Izumi to say yes."
Korra briefly turned her attention back to her son. "What does that mean for me? For us?"
"Nothing, right now. It does give opportunities." Nanuluk crossed his arms. "Kuvira's revolt could be a means for your father to get into the city. An alliance between Kuvira and Tonraq would be strong enough to take Amon and his men, even with his men infiltrating the Southern Water Tribe. Add in our inner-city rebellion and we could overthrow the Equalists even if the Fire Nation says no."
"The Earth Queen wouldn't like that. Even with me held hostage, my father would still need to stay political about it all. He can't afford to strain any relationships with allies."
"No, but he wouldn't have to worry if the Earth Queen wasn't in charge."
"What are you thinking?"
Nanuluk sat back down in his chair. "I'm thinking it's time to draw up some plans. After you heal up, of course."
"You don't have to be here, you know. I'm fine now." Korra said. Her baby was starting to doze off despite still nursing from her. She thought it was adorable.
"I know I don't have to but I want to." He gave her a smile that made her face feel flush.
"I just wish Asami were here too." A small rumble from her stomach interjected into the conversation. "And some food."
Nanulak stood up. "Right. I'm supposed to go pick up the noodles. I'll go find out about the Asami while I'm out."
Korra nodded before he left out of the room. She turned her attention back to her baby. He was still feeding.
"You're quite a hungry child." Although she didn't know how long it was supposed to take a baby to feed.
A small sigh escaped her lips. She knew motherhood was going to be the toughest battle she ever fought.
She didn't know how long she was crying in the corner but she did know the longer she sat, the angrier Amon would get.
But she couldn't find the strength to get up and go to his room. It's only been a week since her pregnancy was confirmed and she was already falling apart at the seams.
He requested her and it scared her.
All she wanted to do was be by herself and finish her sobbing.
She must have been sobbing too loud because Korra came into her room.
"Asami?" Korra called out.
She was unaware until Korra squatted down to be level with her.
"He wants me but I can't. Korra, I can't anymore. He won't stop touching me and he…he-" Asami sobbed louder, avoiding her gaze with Korra.
"Hey, look at me." Korra said in the softest voice she ever heard. A blue gaze met green and puffy eyes. "I'll go in there tonight."
This seemed to upset Asami further. "No, you can't. He'll-"
"I'll be fine. I've been through it too. I'll make it quick and he'll fall asleep and I'll come back in here."
Asami turned her head. She felt so weak. Here was Korra, about to take her punishment. "No-"
"I'm doing it. I'm the Avatar, remember?" Korra wasn't sure she believed what she just said. "I've been through worse in my past lives."
‘I think.'
"I just…" Her sobbing slowed but her tears didn't stop. She was supposed to be strong. She was supposed to be trained so no one would hurt her.
But that didn't matter with Amon.
Korra grabbed Asami's hands and held them dearly. "It's alright. I'm happy to do it. For you."
Asami didn't know when she fell asleep but she knew it happened at some point when her eyes snapped open. She was still in the same room. Her pregnant stomach was still there, as were her cuts and bruises. And the terrible aches and soreness.
What wasn't there was Korra. She felt a panicky feeling rise in her throat. It only got worse when she looked over next to her bed and noticed her father sitting in a chair next to it.
"What are you doing here?" She almost hissed as she sat up.
"I rushed over as soon as I heard. Are you alright?" Hiroshi quickly grabbed her hand but Asami was even quicker to pull it away and turn her head from him.
"I don't want you here."
"Asami I-"
"Why can't you just leave me alone?" She quickly climbed out of her bed. A little too quickly. She had to sit back down as the dizziness took over. "I have to go to Korra."
"Korra is fine but you need to rest."
Asami was determined to defy her father. She couldn't just leave her friend to give birth all by herself.
She stood up again. The dizziness still hit her but she was able to ignore it to make a break for the door.
But her father grabbed her.
"No, Asami, you need to-"
"Let me go!" Asami snatched herself out of his grip. "Korra's-"
"Already given birth." Hiroshi interjected. "She had a boy."
She stumbled backward until she hit the bed. She could cry. She wasn't there for Korra. Korra gave birth all by herself. She was probably scared and in pain and Asami wasn't there to hold her and tell her things were going to be alright.
"I'm taking you away from Amon."
Asami's face turned into a scowl. "I'm not leaving Korra to be in your care."
"She won't be going home for a few days. We can figure out something until then." Hiroshi placed a hand underneath his chin in thought. "She can live with us or I can set her up somewhere but I can't-" She swore she almost saw a tear come from his eye.
"I'm not-"
"You are coming home with me and that's final. You can stay in your room all day. We won't have to look at each other but I'll sleep better at night knowing you're somewhere safe."
It was all so tempting. Being away from Amon's abuse, even for a little while. But her father. She couldn't trust him. Not so soon. Maybe not ever.
Hiroshi took his seat again. This time, he didn't touch her. "You won't have to see me. You just have to be safe."
"You'll help keep Korra safe?" She whispered.
"Of course. You let me protect you and I'll protect Korra too. And her kid."
Asami exhaled a breath she didn't realize she was holding.
"I'll find out more information about Korra. Are you hungry?"
She gave a nod, looking down at the floor.
"I'll go talk to the doctor and we'll head home."
Toklo had been an easy baby so far. He fed, slept, and pooped like a normal baby. He hardly fussed unless he was wet or hungry.
Korra wasn't sure if there could possibly be any bond between them. He wasn't conceived out of love. He was a product of Amon and his abuse.
And yet…
Each time she looked in his eyes, it got easier. The eyes she dreaded seeing since she found out she was with child. The eyes that were supposed to belong to Amon.
But they were Toklo's eyes and she found herself getting lost in them. He was pretty cute, for a baby.
She was so relieved when Nanulak came back with a bag of take-out. Toklo was already asleep in her arms.
"Sorry that took a while but I ran into someone." He mentioned as they swapped what was in their arms, baby for noodles.
Korra was quick to open the bag and pull out a box of noodles and chopsticks. "Who'd you run into?"
Nanulak took a gentle seat in the chair as he rocked the sleeping newborn. "Hiroshi."
She mumbled something but her face was too stuffed for him to understand what she was saying.
"Asami was in an accident."
Korra almost dropped her food. "Where is she?" Her heart began to race.
"She's fine. It's mostly cuts and bruises. Hiroshi's taking her home. To his home."
"The mansion?"
"Yeah."
"Why'd he tell you all this?"
"Information exchange, really. Asami wanted to know how you were doing."
"But…she's fine?"
"Completely. Baby and all. She just needs rest."
Korra sighed. "It'll be lonely without her."
"It doesn't have to be. What if you stayed with me?"
She wasn't sure if she heard him right. "What?"
"Asami will be with her father and you can stay in my apartment until you get situated."
"Amon…" Her voice trailed off, staring at the half-empty box of noodles.
"He won't have to know."
True, there was no reason to stay if Asami wasn't there. If Amon allowed Asami to stay with her father, maybe he wouldn't care if Korra was elsewhere as well.
She just had a baby, after all.
"Sure." Was her only reply.
To say Amon was annoyed would be an understatement. If there was one thing he couldn't deal with, it was incompetence. His subordinates failed to inform him of a rebellion happening at his next target. To make matters worse, the rebellion was much worse than they lead him to believe.
This Kuvira person had a very militaristic political opinion and her followers stood beside her loyally. Her militia was uniformed and organized and her tactics were cold and calculating.
A certain part of him admired her.
He stood in what he thought of as his war room on the island. A large table with a detailed map of the four nations stood in the middle of the room. His Equalists had placed markers on where they believed some of Kuvira's rebellious bases were located, as well as the main one, though they had nothing concrete to go on. It was all speculation.
This Kuvira was going to mess up his plans with the Earth Queen. A few states had been overrun by her militia.
He had to admit, she was smart. She targeted the ones that contributed the most to the food and weapon supplies for the Earth Kingdom. With her strategies, he had no doubt that they could overthrow the Earth Queen.
If he allowed it, of course.
The next summit, he'd have to question the Earth Queen's neglect to inform him of such a dire state. Though, he figured she was concealing the truth in hopes she'd get his troops and throw them in the fire more easily by leaving out that little detail.
"Sir." He was pulled out of his thoughts and looked up from the map to see one of his sergeants entering the room with a thick folder of papers in her uniformed arms.
"I pulled everything we have on Kuvira." She said as she laid the folder on the table. "I had to call one of our divisions in the Earth Kingdom and write down the notes they had but I think that's everything there is to know."
"Korra."
"A boy." She responded. "Hiroshi has also gifted you with two Satomobiles."
"Very good. Alert Tonraq of his new grandson. Dismissed."
She gave a short bow before exiting the room.
He flipped through the pages. Everything from her childhood history to former occupation to every residence she was known to stay at and even her relationship status was there. Someone had even written down that she was fond of moon peaches.
The reports on how she ran her militia and how she came to occupy some of the Earth Kingdom territories were even more impressive than he once believed. Metal-benders were at the forefront of her fight but she had a few fire-bending and water-bending divisions. Her biggest weapon was her special lava-bending division, trained personally by her despite not being a lava bender herself.
Even more impressive was the fact she had non-benders in her ranks currently learning chi-blocking.
He flipped through more pages until he saw a couple of pictures of a young woman in the midst of metal-bending. Her hair was braided on the side and pinned in a bun. Her face showed not one ounce of emotion. Instead, her eyes concentrated on whatever her target was.
He absentmindedly ran his fingers across one of her photos, barely grazing it.
