Adriana:
Adriana couldn't believe her luck. She absolutely could not believe it! She had climbed out of that hole, walked through those woods without incident, came upon a small town called Burgess, and had hitch hiked a ride to the next town over. Her home town. She had run into her parents house as soon as she arrived and embraced her family with happy tears in her eyes. They were elated that she was alright. Especially Ariel. Just as she thought, one had believed her when she told them the Boogeyman took her. They assumed she was confusing the Boogeyman with a burglar that had perhaps broken in and stolen her for ransom. Adriana let them believe that. No way would they believe her if she told them Ariel had spoken the truth.
Later that night, Ariel had confided that when their parents hadn't believed her, she had called upon the Guardians of childhood for help. "Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost!" The child had exclaimed. "They all came to help rescue you!"
'That must've been the 'winter spirit' Pitch had been referring to.' She thought when her sister mentioned Jack Frost.
Two weeks passed. Adriana was now back in her own apartment. She had spent the first couple of days back home with her family. The police came by to question her, but she assured them that she couldn't remember anything. They believed her, stating that the trauma of being abducted could cause her subconscious mind to block the memories of her experience. The officers gained a promise from her though, that should she remember anything, she would come straight to them. She had no intention of 'remembering' but made the promise just to ease everyone's minds. They'd never believe her anyway. She was more concerned with Pitch coming after her again. What would he do? Would he hurt someone she loved to punish her? Adriana didn't think so. He was scary in his anger, but he had yet to physically harm her or anyone she cared about. She had a strong suspicion that the threats he issued toward her sister that first night were all just bluster. He was bad, yes, but he wasn't evil. As each night passed without incident and with no nightmares and no sign of Pitch, she felt it was safe enough to get back into her old routine. But always thoughts of Pitch were in the back of her mind. Did she actually miss him? She wasn't sure what she felt. Her band family and other friends had thrown her a huge welcome home party. She had invited her band friends over to have drinks and watch cheesy movies. She called her family every day to let them know she was safe and told them how much she loved them. Her band mates had decided that she needed a little R&R to recover from her ordeal and so, work and the album were put on temporary hold. That was fine with her. She was too distracted and she didn't think she'd be able to focus on her music right now anyway. Currently, she was going through her old nightly ablutions and getting ready for bed. But no matter how she tried to go back to the way things were, one thought just refused to leave her mind.
What had happened to Pitch?
She knew he was a powerful, immortal spirit of darkness and the King of Nightmares and could take care of himself but . . she couldn't help but feel just a little bit.....worried. At the same time, she felt nervous. Nervous that he would eventually come back for her. And when he did...she gulped...he was going to make very sure that she never got away from him again. Come to think of it, she thought she may not want to get away from him again. That thought scared her most of all. 'I cannot possibly be harboring feelings for him. Can I?' Oh, she was so confused! Damn him for making her feel this way! Then she sighed in resignation.
'Don't be silly,' she admonished herself. 'If he was going to come back for me, he would have done it by now.'
She flipped off the light and was just stepping through the doorway to her bedroom when she felt a chill. All the fine hair on the nape of her neck lifted, tingling as if electrified. Her heart was abruptly pounding against the wall of her chest, and she felt with sudden and terrifying certainty that she was being watched.
In the manner that prey was watched by predators.
Flinching, she turned back toward the shadows in the room she occupied.
And in those shadows, something moved.
Gasping, she flipped the light back on, but saw nothing. "Pitch?" She whispered, warily. "Is that you?" No response was forthcoming.
'I'm being ridiculous.' She thought, and turned off the light and climbed into bed. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling she was being watched. Hunted. The hair at her nape continued to bristle, icy chills rippled up her spine. The pulse at the hollow of her neck fluttered frantically. Eyes wide, she glanced uneasily around the room.
Fear slowly began to take root in her mind again. She couldn't fight it. Soon, she was squeezing her eyes shut, refusing to look and hiding beneath her covers. Images of nightmares and darkness poured through her mind. A shuffling noise sounded from nearby. She jerked completely upright.
And saw glowing yellow eyes glaring at her from the darkness.
"Pitch!" She gasped, breathless.
He said nothing. Just reached over and yanked her out of the bed, causing her to cry out in alarm. "Pitch, wait!" She pleaded, struggling. "You don't have to do this!"
"Silence." He ordered in a deadly tone and subdued her struggles. He lifted her in his arms and transported away with her.
They reappeared in a clearing in the woods. 'Why here?' She thought to herself, looking at their surroundings. 'Why didn't he take us back to his lair?' She shivered from the cool night air.
Seeming to guess her thoughts, Pitch put her down and began circling her, eyeing her like a predator eyes his prey. Not able to stand the silence any longer, Adriana tried pleading with him again. "Pitch, please, can't we just talk this out? You're angry, I get that, but you're being completely unreasonable!"
"Look up." He commanded softly. Deadly. "What do you see?"
She did as he instructed, but she didn't know what she was supposed to be looking for. She looked back at him in confusion. "Nothing." She answered. "Just the night sky."
"Try again." He commanded. His back was turned from her now, his hands clasped behind his back as he waited patiently for her answer.
She looked back up at the sky but couldn't find anything different or unusual. "I don't see anything, Pitch. Just a few clouds, the stars and the........moon." The full moon.
Comprehension dawned on her at that moment. She recalled what he had said the last time she had tried to escape. 'We will be wed on the next full moon, so I suggest you resign yourself.' Pitch meant to marry her. Right now.
He turned back to see the moment she understood what was about to happen. Strength surged through him at the feeling of her fear as it filled him with power. Power he had lost during his battle with the Guardians. He had been right. He had been no match for them. Though he had regained some power, far more children believed in them and not him. They had defeated him and he had spent the past two weeks recovering in hiding. He didn't go back to his lair for fear of them following him and taking Adriana while he was weakened. Imagine his surprise when he returned to find that she had escaped on her own, mere hours after he had left her!
Pitch had been furious. But now he had her. She was about to become his for eternity. Because once they were bound, there was no way for the bond to be broken. She would be immortal like him...and she would belong to him forever. Of course, she had to willingly say her vows for the bond to work. But he knew just the weak link in her armor that would make her agree to forever be bound to him. With a wave of his hand, black sand began swirling around her, transforming her nightclothes into a midnight blue wedding gown.
"I-I can't do this..." Adriana trembled. He would have her sacrifice everything! Her family, her friends, her very life as she knew it would cease to exist and she would become....his. Strangely, the thought of being his wasn't what bothered her. It was just the thought that he expected her to give up everything and everyone she had ever cared about. If she did this, she'd never see them again. "I won't go through with this!"
"Oh, but you will, my pet." He ordered. With a snap of his fingers, more black sand billowed up, swirling in a small tornado and revealing a small figure inside. Adriana's eyes narrowed as she tried to make out who the figure was. Ariel! It was her little sister! She was bound and gagged, sitting atop one of Pitch's Night Mares. Tears streamed down her face and she looked around with fear etched on her face.
Pitch began to approach the child menacingly, which caused her to whimper and attempt to shuffle away. But, bound as she was, she couldn't move.
"Pitch, you bastard! Leave her alone!" Adriana shouted, rushing to place herself between him and the child, stopping his approach.
He suddenly grabbed her by both arms and pulled her up to his eye level. "Your vows, Adriana! I'll not be swayed from my present course! Marry me. Say your vows...-and I'll let her go." He added more gently, seeing the stricken look that had come upon her face.
Adriana knew at that moment that she had no choice. That she had never had a choice. She would marry him. She had to if she was to ensure her sister's safety. Her eyes slid shut and she hung her head in defeat. And as she nodded her assent, a single tear slid slowly down her cheek.
Pitch's chest twisted at the evidence of her pain and he rubbed a hand over the area where his heart should've been. He didn't want her to be unhappy. He longed, at that moment, to see her smile. To look at him with desire and wonder as she had that night he had shared passion with her. 'But it's too late, now.' He thought with determination. 'I cannot let her go.'
Pitch waved his hand and another billow of black sand appeared. This time, however, the figure inside was no small child. It was a man. A strange looking man. Tall, with dark olive skin, long grey hair and a grey beard. He was wearing a long, ruby colored cloak with intricate gold symbols sewn into the hems. He carried an hourglass in one hand and when he opened his eyes, she noticed they were swirling silver orbs that glowed ever so slightly, reminding her of the shining moon that hung above them in the night sky.
"Who-?" She began to ask but Pitch answered her question before she could voice it.
"This, my darling, is Chronus. But you may know him better as Father Time." He said. "He has generously agreed to perform the ceremony for us."
Adriana's eyes widened as Pitch explained who the strange man was. She and Pitch were going to be married by Father Time? And then she would become...
-immortal. Oh, the irony, she thought.
"Pitch, please..." She started to plead with him one more time, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she could convince him to see reason. But it was not to be.
Pitch clasped both her hands in his as they stood before Father Time, effectively silencing her plea. Chronus began the ceremony and Pitch echoed his vows back flawlessly. Then, he turned to her and instructed her to repeat after him as well.
The only word to escape her constricting throat, however, was "Please." The desperate plea caught Pitch's attention, then. There was an edge of disconsolateness in her voice this time. How he hated that this was the way things turned out! He had so hoped to woo her, to have her desire to be with him as much as he desired to be with her. But it was too late to stop now. She was his. He knew now that he loved her. She had proven that he did indeed have a heart. He would spend the rest of eternity doing everything in his power to make it up to her. To give her happiness. And to earn her love in return. But for now, he needed her cooperation.
She bit her lip, hard, the action close to drawing blood. "If you don't stop that," Pitch warned, "I'm going to kiss you so I can ease the sting your teeth are inflicting."
Pitch squeezed her small hands between his and glanced over behind them, causing her to look over her shoulder. Her sister was still astride the Night Mare, bound and gagged. The message was clear. If she wanted him to release her sister, she would have to say her vows. With a deep breath, she turned back...and repeated every word, just as instructed.
When Father Time pronounced them man and wife, Pitch leaned down and claimed her lips softly in a gentle kiss, causing Adriana's insides to flutter in desire. 'Stupid freakin hormones!' She thought and pulled away before he could deepen the kiss.
She looked around suddenly and noticed, with alarm, that they were alone. Chronus had vanished, as had the Night Mare, along with her sister.
Guessing her thoughts, Pitch said, "Chronus begs your pardon that he could not stay and congratulate us further, my dear. But he had many other matters to attend."
"And my sister?" She asked, her tone worried. "What have you done with her?"
Pitch looked reluctant to answer, but after a moment he finally said, "Your sister......was never here. It was an illusion. A nightmare I created."
She looked at him in astonishment. "Y-You......you...tricked me?"
"As I said before, I know your greatest fears. It's the one thing I always know. Yours is that you will fail to protect those you love. What you didn't realize is that I never would have harmed the girl in the first place. For harming her would have hurt you," he gently ran the backs of his knuckles down her cheek, "and I cannot stand for that." He finished softly.
Adriana jerked away from him and refused to meet his gaze. She was glad that her sister had never been in any danger, but she couldn't believe he had tricked her! Well, ...she could believe it. This was Pitch Black, after all. But she was still pretty damned pissed off about it!
Seeing her mounting anger and realizing that she probably wasn't going to forgive him quite yet, (or maybe ever) Pitch decided it was time for them to return home. 'What's done is done.' He sighed inwardly. 'I shall simply have to make it up to her.' With that thought in mind, he picked her up, causing her to sputter angrily, and transported them back to his underground lair.
