PART VIII; Antique Shop Showdown
~*~*~*~*~
Jade spent a good thirty minutes trying to get the bracelet that bounded to her wrist. She banged it against the flood, closed a door on it, and even tried to chew it off with desperation. She stopped using brute force the moment the idea of taking a hacksaw to her arm came to mind, and she spent another thirty minutes in Uncle’s library.
She thought that maybe, somewhere in the vast collection of tomes, she might find a spell that would remove the bracelet. As Uncle always said, “Only magic can beat magic”.
She had herself a nice pile of books going, scanning page after page, and trying to find something that might work before tossing it aside if she found nothing useful. She certainly found some interesting things, but nothing useful.
All seemed lost and she has to tell Spence what happened once she came to the fiftieth book, when she came to a very interesting book. It was the same green color as the ones Spence has, bearing some kind twisted knot like design on the front. But, the only difference to those, is that this one seemed much less older and, most of all, in English.
But, she wasn’t able to make out what it all was about. Skimming through the pages, she came to this chapter about this alchemist of some kind that once existed in Ireland, who spent most of his life enchanting meaningless and often too common items to do random things. However, the chapter was focused on some clothing he enchanted, that, when worn, gives the wearer...powers.
The book had earned Jade’s full attention, as she turned the page, and her eyes fell upon the same crude illustration of the bracelet around her wrist like the one in Spence’s book. This bracelet, called the ‘Hand of Aphrodite’, will make anyone the wearer chooses to fall madly in love with them, and also protect them from those with cruel intentions. It was crafted for some Greek woman many years ago, but was lost to the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Lesbos Island.
Jade, absent mindedly looked at the bracelet, growing more curious. How can she take it off? She kept reading. The ‘Hand’, had only one flaw. Once worn, the ‘Hand’ could not be removed, unless the wearer said the following incantation...
Jade blinked once, twice, and third time, and anger slowly boiled in her stomach, until she was fuming and gripped the book until her knuckles turned white. The part of the page, that had the incantation to remove the bracelet, was TORN OFF!!
Blinded by fury, Jade let out a terrible cry and threw the book across the room, turned and kicked her pile over, and started to throw anything and everything in her reach. Why was life so unfair to her? What did she do to be punished like this? Was this karma? Or was some evil force plotting against her?
She growled and grunted, books and beakers and vials flying to and fro, tears trailing down her cheeks. Finally, spent of energy, Jade picked up one last item and tossed it to her feet, before falling to her knees huffing and puffing.
The last option now was to wake up Spence, and see if he can help her. But then, he would tell Captain Black about tampering with a magical artifact, and Black will tell Jackie, and Jackie will be more upset and ground her for the rest of her life.
She looked up and saw the mess she made. Uncle will not like this either. She stood up and sniffled, and began to head down the hall to the kitchen. She felt like a convict walking on death row, and telling Spence what happened was the electric chair. Surly, all that commotion should have awakened him up. She turned into the kitchen, and stared at wide eyes.
“Oh, dang.”
He was STILL asleep, still slumbering contently. It was like when Tohru slept through the screaming two weeks before. Jade approached to inspect, when she saw something very peculiar. Something bright pink was in his ear, and when she leaned in to inspect it, she found that, Agent Spence, was wearing ear plugs.
She thought about giving him a good jab to the ribs would jar him awake, but stopped herself. What will he do, when he wakes up to find that the girl he was suppose to watch has an ancient magical bracelet fused to her wrist?
He would be upset, of course. But, she couldn’t handle any more people being upset at her, that and she has no clue on how he would react to it all, or HOW upset he would be. She withdrew her hand from the slumbering agent and scanned the table. It was obvious that he was translating the green book to English; perhaps he finished the passage on this brace let, and written down the incantation to release it?
All she had to do was decipher his handwriting.
Through the following ten minutes, Jade sat and pondered on the agent’s handwriting. She already knew a few things about cursive, like that meant what, but Spence’s handwriting was so scratchy and chaotic that it was really difficult judging what was an ‘a’ or an ‘o’.
Finally, after growing increasingly frustrated, Jade came across the passage she was searching for, and spent another five minutes trying to decipher it. The moment of truth has arrived, and the magical incantation to remove this accursed bracelet was...
She stopped, and blinked once, twice, then thrice.
“What the crap is this?” She said to herself out loud.
The incantation was written in gibberish! And just any gibberish; ANCIENT gibberish! When she tried her best to read it, it caused her tongue to flap around in her mouth and utter some nonsense.
Her frustration at its peak, Jade slammed the book shut and tossed it up on the table. To hell with it all! She had no choice but to wake up the agent. She was so frustrated, that she was about to wound up a mighty punch to deliver on the stout man’s side, when something caught her attention.
It was the sound of the front door’s bell, the one that sounded when it was opened. Were they back already? She quickly rushed to doorway and peeked around the corner, fearing that it was Jackie and the rest coming home early.
No, worse.
It has been two months since Jade last saw the infamous trio, the Enforcers, and thought for a time there that, with things have been going, she would never see them or the Dark Hand again. So, it sure was a surprise seeing the three of them, Ratso, Finn, and Chow, sneaking their way into the shop.
Once inside the building, Finn, the leader of the three, turned to his pals and shushed them. “Remember,” he said, “We go in, get this ‘Hand’ thing, and get out.”
There was a chuckle from the short Chow. “He’s just one agent, right? How hard can this be?”
Finn just shrugged. “The dossier of this guy said he had minimal training in fist fights, but it said something about excelling in other fields.” There was an evil chuckle from the man. “Besides, if anything goes bad, we still got plan B.”
“Uhh, but he said he’s not going to wait too long.” The slowwitted Ratso suddenly interjected.
Finn just shrugged it off and signaled his men to follow him, and they started to sneak their way into the home.
Jade, well hidden from her spot, quickly pulled away from the doorway and into the kitchen. Unconsciously, she gripped the bracelet in her hand. They’re after the artifact, the artifact attached to her wrist, the artifact she can’t get off!
She rushed to the slumbering agent and started to push on him, trying to jar him awake. “Wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up!”
“Hey!”
She turned in a flash, and saw Ratso at the door. “Jade?”
“I’m grounded!” Jade suddenly cried, and rolled under the table.
After so long, sneaking with Jackie to all these missions, the Enforces became aware of her patterns. Where ever Jackie was, Jade was sure to be not far behind. It was surprise to Ratso to see the little girl here, rather than with her uncle.
A surprise, unfortunately, that didn’t last long. The gruff man stormed into the room, ready for anything. It was the movement of the table shifting from Jade’s tumbling roll that finally jarred the agent awake, and he opened his eyes to see a member of the Dark Hand charging at him.
From under the table, Jade watched as Spence stood up and quickly kicked the chair towards Ratso, knocking it into the man’s legs, and he fell to the ground. When Ratso fell, Spence was quick to jump up, and used his great weight to drop himself bottom first onto the back of prone man before he could stand up. Ratso yelped and groaned; just as the other two came charging in.
Jade started to worry. She overheard what Finn had said about Spence’s combat skill. And by the look on his face, the previous actions were out of stark blind luck. Spence, quickly, grabbed the closest thing to him, which happened to be one of his books, and he brought it before just in time to use it as a shield against a punch from Finn.
Pushing forward, the agent once more used his weight, only this time he plowed his way through the two, knocking Finn and Chow to the ground as he rushed out of the kitchen, the three Enforcers springing to their feet and giving chase.
The moment they were out of sight, the building was filled with the sounds of things being thrown around and some curses from the battling men. Jade quickly got out from under the table and hurried to the door, looking out to see the fight progress.
It was bad, very bad. She looked around the corner in time to see Spence take a rather sharp punch across the face from Finn, combined with a swift kick to the gut from Chow. The agent stumbled back, grabbed the broom that was close by, and swung it out, the bristles brushing Ratso’s face.
This caused the men to back up, and a scowl appeared on Finn’s face.
“Forget this!” He looked to the front of the store. “Plan B!”
All of a sudden, the front door to the store was forced open off its hinges from a powerful blow, and a cry echoed into the room. A cry that Jade heard too often to know what it meant.
A cry of, “Angry Crow Takes Flight!”
The blue and red blur that was the Black Tiger, Hak Foo, flew through to open doorway, and with a crack, his forehead connected to Spence’s, and Spence was forced back into the wall and to the ground unconscious in a bundle.
The conflict over, Hak Foo stood over the defeated agent with a smug grin, dusting off his hands humorously.
“We should have sent him in first.” Chow stated, adjusting his glasses.
Ratso’s nose winkled and he rubbed the pain from it. “I thought you said this guy couldn’t fight!”
“Hey, I said he wasn’t good at fighting, not that he would.” Finn objected, dusting off his suit.
“Enough,” Hak Foo growled. “Get the ‘Hand’.”
Chow and Finn knelt down to the agent and started to search his pockets, tossing the contents on the floor. After a few short moments, a pair of glasses, a couple of candy bars, a wallet (Which Chow took the money out of), a gift certificate to a pizza parlor (Ratso pocketed that) and a handheld game system, the two men stood back up.
“Chump doesn’t have it.” Finn stated.
“He must’ve stashed it someplace.” Chow said.
“Or maybe Jade has it.” Ratso said, picking in his ear.
The three other men turned to Ratso, and suddenly turned to the doorway of the kitchen.
Jade stood there wide eyed. “Oh snap.”
“Jade’s got the Hand!” Finn cried out. “Get her!”
Jade turned and made a dead run through the kitchen, the sound of the table being flipped over behind her. She skidded around the corner and the perusing Chow crashed into the wall, followed by Ratso. She made it into the library, where she shut the door into Finn’s face and locked it.
Ignoring the pounding on the door, Jade quickly scrambled around the room to find anything that she could use to defend herself. The only thing she could think of off the bat was to use one of the heavy books as a weapon, but then tried to think if she can remember a chi spell that might seal the room so they couldn’t get in.
She then decided to put these old heavy books to use, and started to push stacks to the door, just as the pounding increased. Her makeshift barricade would not last forever, especially with Hak Foo on the other side, but all this was worth a shot.
Jade pulled off more books from the shelves to use form blocking, when she found something. One of the books didn’t feel like leather, rather plastic, and when she gave it a small push, there was a ‘click’ sound and it, along with the several books alongside it, opened up to reveal a hidden box.
Tossing the books in her hands onto the pile, she opened the box and looked inside, thinking there was something inside she could use. There were vials, filled with purple gunk. Before she could do anything else, there was a loud cry, and the door was force open, scattering the books all over the room.
She turned, and Hak Foo came into the room.
“Hand over the, ‘Hand’.” He said to the little girl.
Jade panicked. “I can’t! It’s, stuck!”
Hak Foo grinned evilly, just as the rest came into the room. “Then I will claim it by force.”
The mighty man launched forward with a cry, his arms outstretched to tackle the little girl. Jade, in a last ditch effort to defend herself, threw up her arms to shield herself.
“This is it”, she thought, “I always thought I would die by doing something cool, like jumping over the Grand Canyon on a motorcycle. Not like this, not by Hak Foo!”
She prepared herself for the worst, when the cry from the flying man was suddenly silenced by the sound of rubber being stretched, and there was a sudden, more alarmed cry from him, and the sound of crashing. She peaked to see what just happened, and found Hak Foo lying in a pile of books, shaking his head as he stood up.
The other three men were now stepping back, their eyes wide.
“What just happened?” Finn suddenly asked aloud.
Jade lowered her arms, and as she did, she saw the bracelet around her wrist was once more glowing brightly, and the veins in her hand hade streaming light through them.
Before she could contemplate on what was going on, Hak Foo was to his feet, and once more charged at the child. When he got close enough, the bracelet let out a brilliant light and a golden bubble was suddenly around Jade. Hak Foo punched at the bubble, and the bubble stretched from the impact, but suddenly snapped and repelled him back, sending him flying into the wall with a crash.
The bubble disappeared, leaving Jade wide eyed and confused. It then dawned on her; The Hand was not only made to make people fall in love to whoever wore it, but protected her from people who wanted to hurt her.
And she thought it was a piece of jewelry with a useless power. No wonder Valmont wants it.
Jade, her heart no longer pounding in her chest, began to feel a little cocky, and went into a combat pose before the four men. “Who’s next?”
The three standing men looked at one another, then to the fourth standing back up and rubbing the back of his head. Chow was the first to do anything, which was turn around and started to run out of the store, Ratso following close behind. Finn rushed out, with Hak Foo tailing.
But he stopped before leaving, turning to shout “We’ll get you Chan!” and was gone.
Jade exhaled a deep breath and slumped to the floor, looking around at the mess. But then she stood up and rushed to the front of the store and knelt down to the unconscious Spence. Judging by the big knot he had on his head, he was going to be out of it for a long time. She grunted and propped him up against the wall to make him more comfortable, and then looked around the room.
She was annoyed that she just swept the floor and now it was a mess again, but then she stopped to think, the whole house, from the front of the store to the back of the library, was a complete and utter mess. The door lied on the ground in splinters, the broom stink was broken in half, countless books were scattered across the floor of the library, and one chair was now fire wood.
Unfortunately, some of the antique merchandise, like some vases, a ship in a bottle, one suit of armor, a couple of ceramic eggs, and this tiny statue of Buddha, was claimed during the fight and was now shards on the floor. Checking real fast, Jade went to the library and saw that some of the books that went flying when Hak Foo burst in, flew and broke some vials, most of them were empty (Thank goodness), but a few of them had some spell ingredients inside and now they made a nice steaming puddle on the floor.
After checking the damage, Jade let out a long forlorn sigh. She didn’t know when Jackie and them would be back, probably a week at most, but when they come back to find the shop in such a state, they would be furious.
Only, this time, it wasn’t really her fault. Well, it wasn’t mostly her fault; she still had the bracelet on her wrist, and it was what they came for. And, when Spence comes too, he’ll be upset with her that she had it, and he’ll tell Captain Black, who in turn would tell uncle Jackie, who will ultimately be more upset with her and extend her punishment.
But then Uncle will be upset that his library and shop would be damaged, and that he has to ‘waste his valuable time’ to get the bracelet off of her.
It’s a long vicious cycle, with her the victim.
She sighed once more and sat against the wall of the hall, lying her head back. This is starting to become the single worst month of her life, and it’s not even halfway done. She stayed there for a few moments, before standing back up. Might as well start cleaning up; at least that might lessen the blow when they come home.
Jade picked up what was left of the broom and was going to start sweeping up the broken shards of a vase, when she stopped and figured it would be better if she cleaned up the spilt ingredients so they won’t leave a stain, or eat its way through the floorboards.
She grabbed a towel and made her way into the library. The mixed pile wasn’t steaming anymore, but she still had to wipe it up. She started to scrub it, but then her mind started to wonder.
“This would be easier if I had someone to help.” She thought to herself. Gradually, her scrubbing slowed down to a stop. “Wait a minute.”
She stood up and went to that cavity in the bookshelf that had the box of vials hidden and picked up one. The purple goo inside looked so familiar. Could it be? She looked into the box and found a piece of paper. It was in Tohru’s hardwiring.
“Special Reserved Duplication Spell; Use Sparingly.” It said, following with a color coded list. The vials all had the personality alterations, and each vial with a different color cap had different alterations in it. Those with a green cap were smarter, the red cap was nicer, and the blue cap was boyish while the pink caps were girlish, the grey caps were meaner, and the dark green caps were dumber.
Jade was stumped, looking at all the vials. Why would Tohru make a bunch of different spells, but then hide them? She remembered Uncle arguing with him on his spells, and Tohru said that he’ll dispose of this notebook so she couldn’t get a hold of it again.
Tohru must have made these for some reason, thought she couldn’t think why. Rummaging through the box, she then found a small metal tin on the bottom with a little label on it that said “In Case Of Emergencies.”
She opened it up too find a fine green powder inside. She remembered this stuff; it was what made her and her clones fuse back into one. Now Jade was more confused; vials of the altered duplication spell, and now the reversal spell?
Tohru must have been planning on using this, but for what? Perhaps he had used it already before?
Jade shook her head to ignore it; none of that mattered right now, because now she had found the means to get help in cleaning the shop. She smiled as she picked out a vial; one with a red cap. She was about to open it, when she stopped.
She started to remember her first clone, her unofficial ‘sister’. In her hands was a means to bring her back. Her heart pounded in her chest, looking into the box at all the vials and the one in her hand.
She could have her clone back! That very thought alone had pushed her rationality aside. Forget Jackie, forget Uncle, forget everything! She grabbed another vial from the box, one with a pink cap, and popped both of them opened.
“Here goes everything!” She said aloud, and chugged the two vials down. Maybe drinking both of the vials wasn’t such a smart thing to do, for all at once her senses was assaulted by their foul taste times two, and the extra content was hard to swallow down.
She cough and gagged and nearly threw up, falling to her knees and clenching her stomach and praying that it doesn’t come back up again. She coughed up a little of it, making a nice splat as it landed on the ground. The coughing subsided and the pain in her stomach lessened, and she looked up and around.
Before she turned, she felt the familiar sensation of a hand on the back of her neck, rubbing her soothingly.
“Gosh! Are you okay?”
She knew that voice. She turned and looked up, and sure enough, a second Jade was there with a worried look on her face, rubbing her neck to make her feel better. “That sounded pretty awful.”
Jade gulped down and cleared her throat, standing up on shaky legs. “Yeah, I’m fine.” Dang, her voice was hoarse.
The Jade Copy smiled and suddenly hugged her. “That’s good; I thought you were going to throw up there for a second.”
Jade stiffened when she was suddenly hugged, but calmed down almost instantly. She was getting the sooth felling once more, and she almost succumbed to it before she snapped back to reality and gently pushed the clone away.
“Listen,” She started, clearing her throat of that foul taste once more. “I’m fine, but I need you to do something for me.”
The Jade Copy smiled innocently. “Sure! What do you...?” She suddenly realized the current state of the room. “Whoa, what happened here?”
“That’s the thing.” Jade took a deep breath, and in one single sentence, she summed up her situation, starting with when she came into the store, to meeting her agent babysitter, the magic bracelet, and Enforcer’s sudden appearance, until finally ending it with her trying to clean the house.
The clone remained silent for a few seconds, before she looked down at her hands. “I’m, a copy?”
Jade nodded her head.
“And, you made me so I can help you clean the shop?” The clone asked.
Jade nodded again.
The clone was silent again, staring at her own hands. After almost a whole minute, the copy looked back up to the original. “Wha-...What’s going to happen to me, when we’re done?”
Jade felt a deep pang in her heart, and she scratched the back go her head nervously. “Well, I dunno. I would like it if you stuck around a few. Ya’know, like, hang out and have a little fun.”
The clone was once more silent. Jade didn’t like it. She was so quite, and her eyes held so much confusion and questioning. After a few seconds, she looked back up to her. “What’s going to happen to me then?”
Jade shook her head. “It’s best not to think about it. We should start cleaning.” She turned and picked up the broken broom and handed it to the copy. “You can go ahead and sweep up the mess in the front; I’ll start collecting the books.”
The Jade Copy nodded her head and started to head out. She stopped at the door and looked back. “Are you sure you’re going to be alright?”
Jade nodded her head. “Like I said; I’m fine.”
“That’s not what I meant.” The copy suddenly said. Jade looked at her confused, and she turned back to the door. “I dunno; I just feel that you’re not feeling right.”
“No, it’s okay, really.” Jade started to pick up the books. “I’m just, a little upset over what happened, is all.”
The copy stayed there for a few seconds before heading out the door. “If you say so.”
