A/N: Sorry for all these shorter chaps, I'm posting as I finish. Figure that's better than waiting weeks for me to get off my ass :p
"I can't do this."
It was sunny and crisp outside. The leaves lay heavy on the lawn, which was impressive since there weren't any trees in the yard to shed them. Dib wondered if he could pay a kid to rake it for them, his arm, though now free of any restraint, was definitely not ready for a day's worth of serious outdoor work. The house looked the same, if a bit dark since no one had lived in it for a couple months.
Zim stood before him, eyes clear and hard, or at least Dib though they were since he had his contacts on and could only see the maroon through the iris. He was wearing his "blonde boy" disguise again, at Dib's request. Gaz had picked them up from Dib's apartment and now the three of them stood in front of their childhood home. In fact, they'd been standing there for five minutes.
"It's just a house, Dib. He's not in there." Zim said. Dib, shivered, hands deep in his trench pockets. Wind blew around them, picking up the leaves. Gaz was off to the side, looking at the house and inspecting some of the now dead bushes in front of it. Dib thought she probably didn't want to go inside any more than he did, but she hid her anxiety much better than him.
"I wish we could just raze the place…rent a bulldozer…” Dib didn’t sound like he was joking one bit. The morning had been tense, with Dib growing steadily more restless as the appointed hour approached. Zim had done his best to calm him, but it was clear he was working against years of unresolved issues and this would be difficult no matter what he did.
"I know this isn't easy, but it has to be done." Zim clutched Dib's upper arms, trying to get through to him. It was such a familiar gesture...Membrane had used it often enough. Quickly, Dib stepped back, out of Zim's grasp, walking over and leaning against Gaz's car.
Zim was at a loss, and looked from Dib to Gaz and back again. No help from the Dib-sister. Frowning, he walked up to his former enemy.
"Dib..." Zim lowered his voice. "Love-pig." He said quietly, using his affectionate term for Dib. "We can do this another day...but it's going to be hard no matter how long we wait. And the longer we wait, the more this house rots and festers." He tapped Dib's temple, lightly. "Up here." Dib closed his eyes.
"It hurts..."
"I'll be with you. We'll do it together."
Dib sighed. "I just...don't know what we'll find. I haven't been in the house for years. A part of Dad is in there. A part of me is too." Dib lowered his head. "I'm not sure I want to face meeting either of them again." Zim looked lost in thought for a moment at this comment, but then shook his head.
"I didn't know humans left bits of themselves lying about." Dib smiled slightly at this as Zim pressed on. "Listen, if there is a piece of you in there, it's rightfully yours and..." Dib looked up as he spoke. Zim seemed to be struggling with the words. "You know how much I care about you. But Dib, I want all of you. Even the parts you don't like as much. Even the parts that you think are broken. I believe…well, that even though it hurts, you should...you should want to be whole. And fixing this will do that, I think." Dib felt his chest pound at his words. The house was scary, but Zim's words reverberated, bouncing back through Dib. Realizing if he left the house alone, it would squat like an ugly toad in his mind. It would become a shadow in his life, always there and menacing, tainting every happy moment Dib had. Never being able to move on, maybe even forget a little, that was absolutely terrifying. And Zim had sensed this. Dib swallowed hard and thick. It felt like he was relocating his heart.
"Things really have changed, haven't they? I didn't think it could happen..." He leaned closer, finally enclosing the startled alien in a hug. "Just like Pinocchio..."
Zim frowned. "What did you say?" Dib looked up, his grin wide.
"Nevermind. Not important.” He paused to gaze into Zim’s face, seeing through the mask, and then even through Zim’s green skin, into his core. “It’s just…you're human, Zim. Did you know that? You've become a real human." Zim looked down at him, his confusion evident.
"I don't understand."
"It's okay. Most humans don't." He looked back at the house. It was made of wood and stone and nothing more. Dib nodded.
"Okay, let's go."
