“How could ... how could they sell me?”
Ty Lee wanted to believe that she didn’t hear those words that came from Azula’s lips. Jian Li merely sat silently as Ty Lee struggled to figure out how her friends could sell her to some savage. He dipped the washrag into the basin.
“They ... were my friends. What did I do to make them hate me? Was I that bad?”
Silence was one of the most powerful tools that a sifu could use to get to the truth. It was one of the most powerful tools that his uncle used to enlighten Zuko to his blindness. Now it was his turn to act in the role of his namesake. He was the Jian, the master, who guided the novice to the often painful truth.
“I just wanted to be able to be free. I did not want to be a noble. I never desired a title or wealth. I never wanted to marry the prince and spend my life bearing heirs to the throne. I just wanted to see the world. I just wanted to escape the harem that enslaved my mother. Mai and Azula knew it. They knew that I fear becoming just like the women who gave birth to me. Then they sold me to you.”
Ty Lee looked at her new master. She dreaded what she was going to be forced to do this evening. She dreaded what he was going to do to her body. Once she wanted to kiss the dashing Jian Li. Now he was going to rip away her innocence.
Ty Lee looked around the trailer that he called home. It was now her prison. On one side was the little cot where he was going to ... rape her.
Mai told me that it hurts the first time. I just hope that it does not hurt too much ... that he would be gentle.
Normally Ty Lee would try to fight her way out of her predicament.
However, she was too stunned by the betrayal to be able to put up a fight.
Worse, she knew Jian Lee was a much better martial artist than she was. He was a master with the blades. She watched as he practiced his katas every day and sparred with the other martial art performers who entertained the crowd. He was not a performance martial artist, but no one ever touched him unless he let them.
Somehow, he knew the pressure points that would paralyze her chi-flow. It was not a martial art known to many masters. It was almost a myth among the martial artists and taught only to a small elite.
Ty Lee held back a sob.
“Please be gentle, I ... I won’t try to stop you. I have no home to return to... no where to run. If you don’t hurt me, I do anything ... I will sleep with anyone you ...”
Jian Li looked at her with the saddest golden eyes as Ty Lee suppressed another sob. Reluctantly, she started to unbutton her blouse. He stopped her by gently pulling her hands away from the buttons.
“Duchess Ty Lee, I am a card cheat. I am a thief. I have hurt many people who did not deserved to be hurt. I have killed those who stood in my way...so many I can not remember their faces or even how many lives I took. I know that I might one day have to kill my own blood. However, I am not a rapist or a pimp, unlike some of my ancestors.”
“Duchess, how did you ... no that it matters - I have been tossed out.”
Jian Li turned his back and started rubbing his face with the damp washcloth.
“You are still a duchess ... at least until Azula blames me for your disappearance. Getting cut off from your past makes you reconsider everything you hold dear. Honor, tradition, and loyalty – I use to believe in all three. Now I don’t know what to believe.”
Jian Li turned around. Ty Lee looked down. His hand lifted her chin. She looked up and saw...
“Zuko!”
Ty Lee blurted out his name before she made the conscious connection between the scar and his name. Unlike others, she did not need the scar to recognize him. She knew this face since she was three years old.
“Yes, Tea-Leaf, the sickly little prince you and your friends taunted is now a pauper with no honor, no family, and no future.”
Zuko summoned a small flme and lit the small stove. He started heating the wok. His tone was emotionless ... matter of fact...yet he convey the fact that he had lost some of his legendary defiance.
“Ty, when I die, no one will mourn my passing. No one will light my pyre. My soul will not be released when my ashes are scattered. My flesh will feed the scavengers...I would be forced to wander hell unmorned and nameless for all eternity."
The image of animals feasting upon a human corpse is an anthemia to the Fire Nation. No matter on what side they fought on in life, the Fire Nation ensured that dead was always burned to prevent the anthemia from happening.
“Because I am hunted by my former homeland, I cannot afford love another. If I do, someone will hurt her to get to me.”
Zuko took in a deep breath.
"I cannot enjoy a moment’s peace because someone is always out to collect the prize on my head."
He opened his basket and opened a package of meat he bought from teh market this morning.
"What I fear most is that in the end I might decide to end my exile, return home, kill my own blood, and in doing so start a civil war that destroys everything I suffered to protect. Worse, I fear that I will become as twisted as my father and my sister."
Zuko tossed the salted meat unto the chopping board. He then arranged the coals into a pyramid. Once the coals were properly ashed over, only then he place the wok over the flames. He then shifted flour over the meat.
"If I do, I want to believe that I did it to save my nation. However, I know that a part of me want to lash out - to pay back all those who hurt me. To pay my father back for what he did to my mother. I still remember him beating her up for my failings. I still remember him forcing his will on her in my presence. I still remember the bruises on her body when I prepared my mother for her final journey. He took my mother one laast time as he strangled her to death with his own two hhands. Several times he let up so the she could breath and he would tthen repeat the process.
Zuko poured a little cooking oil on the wok and started cubing up some salted meat and slicing up some onions and peppers.
“You have lost something I had hope that you would never have to lose and the world is poorer for it.”
The man standing before her actually has tears in his right eye.
“When I saw you and Mai with my sister ... When Azula hurt Uncle Iroh I wanted to hate you. I wanted to be able to...”
Zuko tossed the chopped meat and vegetables into the wok.
“Hate is a funny thing. Hate allows me to kill and to hurt and I would not have to feel guilt...at least feel guilt for a while. Yet I could not hate you or Mai. My sister used you both. She used to beat you up when she couldn’t do the flips that you did with ease. She placed that piece of fruit on Mai’s head and set it aflame so that I would have to knock Mai into the water to prevent her head from being burnt. Then she laughed at Mai.”
“Tonight, I was close enough to kill her with my bare hands. I wanted to kill her so badly that I had to keep my hands busy with the flame so they did not shake. Hate makes things so easy. Too easy, to surrender your soul to the kings of hell. It was too easy to pay her back. Too easy to force my father to recall me back to the cage of lies. I cannot take the easy route. It’s not me. It’s not what allowed me to survive these many years without a home. Ty Lee, I walk a road that I wish on no person, not even my sister and father. There is no love. There is no freedom. There is no happiness. Just struggle and pain to prolong a life I hate. And yet, to cut my veins or fall overboard into the sea would give them the victory. So I must walk on.”
Ty Lee did not want to remember, but she knew that Zuko remembered each and every prank that she had them pull on Zuzu. Once Ty remembered them fondly because she was having fun with her friends; now she knew that she hurt the only one that really was her friend.
She had to make it up to him.
She decided that he needed someone to show him that he was worthy of being loved.
She decided to surrender herself to him no matter what the consequences.
“Zuko, you don’t have to be alone. You don’t have to die alone. I would be proud to be by your side, have your child, and promise that we will pray for your soul every night when you are gone.”
Zuko kissed her chastely on the lips.
“Sorry, I cannot do that. I cannot ask you to live in my hell. I cannot ask you to live a lifetime in fear that they will come after your child because it’s a threat to the throne by its mere existence. A lifetime of living in fear...wondering when they would come and kill the onles you love. It's easy to accept one's own death. However, watching thouse you love die is perhap the worse torture in the world. I love you like the sister I never had and would be proud to give you away at your wedding. If the gods were kind, I will visit you someday and we can talk of old times and maybe even have a cup of tea.”
Ty Lee knew that Zuko had just closed the door on the future he deserved. He still punished himself for the sins that others inflicted upon him. However, she knew that Zuko did not have the head for firewater she did.
“At least let me help you cook our last meal together. I have some noodles, eggs, scallions, and sausages in my bag. They won't last much longer.”
Ty Lee returned with her food and took over the cooking. As the pair discussed happier times, she slipped a little fire water into his drink and deliberately over salted the food so that he would be thirsty.
It did not take much Fire Water for him to stop being the moralistic soul and to accept her offer as he had little experience with the drink.
Ty Lee kissed him as she removed their clothes.
He kissed her, tasting the breast that she would soon use to nurse his child.
She kissed him down there like she once saw one of her father’s numerous concubines kiss her father down there.
She let him kiss her down where only the lonely ladies of the harem kiss one another in secret.
Despite his drunken state, he was strangely gentle, whispering Tell me that I’m not my father.
She whispered for him to enter her.
He slowly did. It hurt as he stretched her unused passage until she felt a tug, a tear. She did not care about the pain. It was just the beginning of a lifetime of pain.
Ty Lee kissed Zuko and begged him to fully enter her as it did not hurt anymore. She lied about the pain.
Zuko started moving his hips as Ty Lee locked her powerful legs around him using her heels to get him to enter all the way. His face started twisting like her father’s face twisted just before he finished with one of his concubines. As Zuko screamed, Ty Lee locked him in all the way inside her womb so his seed would be firmly planted.
Zuko was young and he did not wilt. Fire benders until they were on deaths door never wilted on the first planting.
He kissed her lips while apologizing for his weakness.
Thank you, she whispered back.
He pulled out of her. She saw the pink juices escape from her passage and the salty juice dribbling from his plow.
Ty pushed him back on the thin mattress. She kissed him and climbed on top of him. She had only one night and would not leave until he was incapable of planting more seed into her fertile womb.
Ty moved up her opening up and down his shaft. The pain has faded into pleasure. She felt something and then found herself shaking and crying. She basked in the feeling as he instinctively timed his release with the contractions of her womb drawing his seed into her. Despite the powerful emotions, both were gentle fearing to break some unwritten code. Both share their body and bared their soul as they instinctively try to bring forth life.
Later that night, Ty Lee held Zuko in her arms as he slept. Zuko and she lost their virginities to one another. A part of her wanted to be there when he woke up in the morning. A part of her wanted a life where they would get old together raising kids, and spoiling a legion of grandchildren. A part of her wanted to wake up next to him every morning. However, she knew that it was not meant to be.
Tonight was not a meeting of lust or passion.
Tonight was not the beginning of a lifetime of love.
Tonight was two lost souls connecting for a moment. A night of being together before each lover would be forced to move onward into the big empty lonely world.
That night Ty Lee surrendered her virtue and let Zuko spill his salty essence several times inside her fertile womb.
Growing up in her father’s harem, Ty Lee was taught the midwife’s arts.
Most of her half-sisters mastered the midwife’s art since at least one of her father’s numerous concubines always seemed to be pregnant. Prior to running away, she had assisted in the delivery many of her younger half-siblings. Her face were the first face that they would see as she had to clean off the bloody mucus and spank them so they started breathing. He hand would be the first to slap them on the rear so they would take their first breath.
Ty Lee knew that tonight was two weeks past the first day of her last bleeding. It was her most likely time to conceive a child. If she did not lose the baby during her travels, she knew that she would be an only-mother by midwinter festival. She accepted the consequences. Zuko had saved her. Now it would be up to Ty Lee to ensure that a part of Zuko remained in this world to remind the world that he meant something even if he would only be a historical footnote in the annals of the Fire Nation.
Before the sun came out, Ty Lee slipped out of Zuko’s embrace. She kissed his chin. She gently kissed his lips. She kissed each one of his eyelids. She kissed his forehead. She tearfully gathered her supplies, penned a farewell note thanking him for his friendship.
Ty Lee knew that she would never see Zuko again.
She knew that her child would never see its father. Nor would Zuko ever be able to hold his child or even know that he left a piece of his spirit growing inside of her. The other mothers she would encounter would insult her. They would call her a whore. They would instruct their children to not play with Zuko’s bastard.
However, she was thankful for having this one night with him and prayed that Agni would forgive her for the pain that she caused him.
Zuko, I promise to pray to Agni and the Kings of Hell for your soul every night and if we have a child to raise him or her to be an honor to your memory.
With that promise, Ty Lee grabbed her traveling bag and left Zuko to travel the road that he must travel.
