Owen can’t get the dream out of his head all morning long, distracting him while David sets up the logistics for supplying the town. He checks off the names of the surrounding land owners he has already contacted and realizes he’s down to just one left. “I only have a Mr. James Donnelly left on my list.”
Justin’s head jerks up, eyes wide. “Old man Donnelly? I’ll go with you. He’s the crazy old guy in these parts.”
David chuckles, not looking up from his laptop. “Don’t think Owen can handle a crazy guy?”
“Not this one.” Justin shakes his head and takes his dishes to the kitchen. “This one is dangerous crazy.”
With a frown, David shuts down his laptop. “Then I think I might tag along too. I need a break anyway.” He notices Owen has not been following their conversation at all and his frowns deepens. “You alright, Owen?”
“Hm?” Owen looks up and sees David staring at him with a puzzled expression. “Yes. Quite alright. Just thinking.”
“Well if this guy is crazy, you might want to put those thoughts away for later.” David rises from his seat.
Owen folds the list and shoves it in a pocket. “Of course.”
Eve absently strokes Samuel’s fur as she looks over the reports for the last month’s employee reviews. One name keeps making her come back to look at it, the amount of raise given raising questions. She sighs, knowing this is something Owen has done a million times. But as this is her first report of this kind, she’s unsure if a raise of that amount is allowed.
“I hate to do this to him since he’s probably in a meeting or something but I gotta ask for help.” She tells Samuel as she lifts the phone and dials.
All three climb out of Justin’s truck, eyeing the log cabin it had taken the 10 miles of driveway to finally get to. “Whatever you do, just don’t talk until I have him settled down and ready to talk.” Justin eyes the house warily.
A shot rings out and dirt flies by their feet. “Get off my property and tell Getties to kiss my ass!” A voice yells out.
“Don’t move.” Justin barely whispers to them before raising his voice. “Mr. Donnelly! Don’t shoot!”
Just as Justin calls out, Owen’s phone rings. His fingers reflexively twitch, barely able to keep from reaching for it unconsciously. Another shot rings out and Owen staggers back, gripping his shoulder in pain as blood pours through his fingers.
“Damn it, Donnelly! I said don’t shoot!” Justin yells as he rushes to Owen’s side. “What the hell are you thinking?!”
“He was reaching for a weapon!” Donnelly yells back, finally appearing on the porch.
“We don’t have any weapons!” Justin growls back, Owen’s face contorted in pain setting off alarms.
Owen tries to pull his phone out of his pocket with his other hand. “Answer it. If you don’t she’ll find some way to get here and she’s not ready for that level of magic yet.”
Justin grabs the phone and sees Eve’s name. “Shit!”
Eve suddenly crumples against the desk, searing pain exploding in her shoulder. Hands suddenly hold her and she looks up to see a small boy with slitted eyes holding her close, worry written all over her face. “It’s Owen. Something’s wrong.”The boy nod’s, easing her back in the chair and dialing the phone for her. He presses the phone into her hand as it begins to ring.
“Hello?” She hears Justin’s voice on the other end and white hot anger courses through her.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!” She yells as the boy begins to rub her arm to soothe her.
Justin’s head jerks back from the venom in Eve’s voice. “Eve, I can’t talk right now..”“THE HELL YOU CAN’T!!!” She yells back. “WHERE’S OWEN AND WHAT’S HAPPENED TO HIM?”
“Who are you talking to Justin Soaring Eagle!?” Donnelly raises his gun again.
“What the HELL are you and Owen at Old Man Donnelly’s house?” Eve growls out loud enough for everyone in the clearing to hear her through the phone.
“Evelyn?” Donnelly lowers his gun. “You’re talking to Evelyn?”
Justin nearly throws the phone at him, turning enough to glare over his shoulder. “Yes I am! And it’s her fiancée you just shot by the way! They were coming to talk to you about helping with Getties but you are too stupid to not shoot first!”
“What?!” Eve yells again. “HE shot Owen?”
Donnelly drops the gun to the porch, grief written all over his face. “Forgive me. I didn’t know. I didn’t mean to shoot him. Not again.”
“Damn it! Put me on speaker phone!” Eve growls out. “Donnelly! You have to get the bullet out! NOW!!”
Hearing her command, he walks off the porch and over to Owen. “But I’m not a doctor any more. I don’t know if I can.”
“Donnelly, you must.” She tries to calm her voice. “You used a homemade bullet, didn’t you?”
Donnelly tears at his shirt, wadding it up and pressing it to Owen’s blood soaked shoulder. “You know I do.”
“He’s allergic to iron, Donnelly.” Eve’s voice softens. “That bullet is going to kill him if you don’t get it out now!”
“Oh my god!” Justin looks up at David. “We have to get it out.”
“Let’s get him inside.” David grabs Owen under the arms as Justin grabs his legs.
Donnelly scoops up the phone as if it’s his lifeline as he follows the other’s into the house. “I’m sorry Evelyn. I’m such a disaster to your family. First Michael and now this. How could you ever forgive me?”
Shocked at her brother’s name and confused at why Donnelly would blame himself, Eve tries her best to stay calm. “You can start making amends by getting that damn bullet out of Owen.”
“I’ll try.” Donnelly sobs as they lower Owen onto the kitchen table. “I promise.”
Eve closes her eyes, taking a deep breath to try to keep herself calm. She can feel the magic trying to escape her body and she tries to wall it in. She feels the boy crawl into her lap, wrapping his arms around her neck as he lays his head on her chest. A loud purring sound fills the room, vibrating through her. She opens her eyes and tries to smile down at him, knowing he is trying to comfort her.
“What is that sound?” Justin’s voice sounds distant.
She lightly strokes the boy’s head. “Samuel. He’s trying to keep me calm.”
A soft pain filled laugh comes over the phone. “See why I said you have too many men in your life?”
She grins, opening the bond between them. “Yes, I do but you’re still the one I plan on keeping.”
“Maybe you can convince him to stay out of the bedroom now. The bed isn’t big enough for all of us.” Owen growls out, gasping.
She looks down at the boy in her arms, gently stroking his hair. “I’ll try.” Suddenly she feels a flash of white hot pain through their bond and Owen’s stifle a scream. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
“I had to cut into his shoulder to get to the bullet.” Donnelly tells her while the sounds of clinking is in the background. “Without anything to numb the pain, He’s going to be in a lot of pain.” He growls and swears. “Looks like the bullet fragmented but I can see all the pieces.”
She hugs Samuel tighter to her, feeling the pain shoot higher as Donnelly digs around in Owen’s shoulder. She feels Owen finally pass out from the pain but holds tight onto him anyway. The pain lessens as each piece is pulled out and she sighs in relief when the pain finally fades to a bearable level.
“I think I have it all.” Donnelly sighs heavily.
“Does he?” David finally speaks up. “Eve?”
“Yes, I think he does.” She closes her eyes and tries to sense his body through their bond. “I can’t tell much but most of the pain is gone and he’s passed out.”
“Ok. We’ll make sure he gets back to the house and rests.” David picks up the phone. “I’ll have one of us call you when he wakes. I’m sure the good Doctor wouldn’t mind coming with us to keep an eye on his patient.”
Eve realizes David’s tone doesn’t make the last part a question but an order to Donnelly. She feels her shoulders ease slightly, knowing the doctor would be there in case something would happen. “Call me the moment he wakes, no later.” She hangs up the phone, staring down at Samuel. “You have to change back before someone sees you.”
Samuel slides off her lap, smiling. He skips across the room to his cat bed and changes back in midskip. She laughs softly as he shakes himself before laying down and grooming his ruffled fur.
