Chapter 73: Preparations and Revelations
*****This chapter is dedicated to Kiya, my new reviewy-peep of reviewy DOOM!! Feel honoured!
Invader Grapa (dubbed by Tallest Red and Tallest Purple as ‘Skoodge, Conqueror of Blorch’) sat at his desk, yawning and playing with an Irken paddle-ball. Shortly after he had “conquered” Blorch, the Tallests had made him a Minister; so basically, he got the boring job of taking care of political matters on Irk while the Tallests were off doing whatever they pleased. He sighed, rolling his eyes and tossing the paddle ball onto the desk top. This job was a far cry from the excitement of Impending Doom Two, but he had been told it was only temporary. Grapa clenched a fist. A ten-year temporary position. What a surprise.
Grapa rose, looking down at the few scraps of paperwork for the day and shaking his head, losing himself in thought. A loud buzz startled him, and he blinked at the view screen in his office. It was an urgent transmission from The Massive! What luck! Perhaps today wasn’t going to be so boring after all.
Straightening out his uniform, he stood at attention, tapping the ALLOW TRANSMISSION button…only to be disappointed when he saw that it was only an encoded transmission. He relaxed, then frowned a little. Encoded? Why would the Tallests use an encoded signal, unless they were worried about spies?
Downloading the message, he sat down at his desk once more and ran the data through the decoder, his expression growing more and more confused.
PREPARE IRK FOR ORDINATION OF NEW TALLEST…MASSIVE ARRIVING IN TEN DAYS FOR CEREMONY…SUMMON ALL SOLDIERS AND OFFICERS TO IRK FOR ORDINATION CEREMONY AND CELEBRATION.
Minister Grapa read the message over, more confused than before. He had ten days to prepare the planet for the Ordination of a new Tallest, to send out a message to all of the Irken soldiers and officers to attend, and to prepare for a…celebration? Since when did new Tallests celebrate?
Scratching his antennae, he shook his head and tapped his communicator. “Minister Squeege, could you come to my office for a few minutes?”

Dib sat at one of the computers, running over the chemical composition of the most effective of the serums on hand, plugging his laptop into the Irken system and downloading the data for later translation. Unhooking his laptop from the computer, he then attached the analysis box he had used once long ago when Zim had tried to turn him into bologna…Dib shook his head and chuckled at the memory. They’d been such children then…
Inserting a blank slip soaked in the serum into the analysis box, he opened the program on his computer, sitting back and watching as his laptop began to break down the chemical sequences, listing those that were known and those that were not.
As Dib had expected, a few of the chemicals in the serum were formed from common elements. Carbon, of course, being one of the most common elements in the universe, was one of the components of the serum. A liquid compound containing nitrogen and another containing selenium were also present, as well as a small amount of iron oxide, which was undoubtedly what gave the truth serum its reddish tinge.
Once his computer had broken the individual components down, Dib leaned forward and scanned through the data, not noticing when one of the Irken scientists came up behind him to watch over his shoulder.
Dib rubbed his chin pensively as he looked over the nine unidentifiable chemical compounds. Fortunately, the computer had separated them into their own distinct molecular structures. Reaching into one of the pockets of his Irken-made labcoat, Dib pulled out a visor and a pair of black gloves that were lined internally and externally with wires and sensors. Still unaware of the Irken scientist behind him, he engaged the remote link on his laptop and put the gloves and visor on, going into the visual component of the program.
Two more Irken scientists came up behind him, marveling as Zim’s human worked, the three dimensional molecule on the screen rotating with the motions of Dib’s hands.
Watching through his visor as he rotated the molecule on screen, Dib made a low sound in his throat.
“Hmm…this should be highly unstable…but it is composed of elements…something’s been used to strengthen the bonds.” He zoomed in on the molecule by pressing two fingers together, and then rotated it on the screen again. “The compound is supported by something…it has to be…” he muttered, chewing his lower lip as he rotated the molecule a few more times, then spoke again. “Computer, isolate unidentified atom number one and scan on higher resolution. Show the orbits of all electrons, use standard colour variation for energy levels.”
By now there were three Irken Science Officers, a Tech, and the two Medical Officers Dib had been working with for the past two days standing directly behind him, watching with thinly veiled curiousity.
Dib’s jaw dropped when the computer provided him with the display of the atom.
“Ununbium!!” Dib exclaimed, completely thrilled. “The Irkens have found a way to stabilize the element! Ha!!” he grinned and rotated the atom a few more times, shaking his head. “The energy levels are insane…this is absolutely amazing…” he murmured almost reverently. “Computer, file atom structure and label as Ununbium; save into Periodic Table in slot one hundred and twelve.” He grinned, although the expression was one of near malice. “Oh, if dad could see me now...” He shook his head, still grinning. “Computer, isolate unidentified atom number two.”

Zim was on the Control Deck, speaking to one of the senior Communication Officers.
“Who’s the Fleet Commander at the head of the Armada?” Zim leaned over the Tech’s shoulder.
The officer scanned through the personnel files, bringing up the profile. “That would be Commander Zen.”
Zim nodded, grinning. “I know him from the Academy.” Walking down onto the central platform of the Control Deck, he nodded to one of the Techs. “Officer, put a communication through to Fleet Commander Zen.”
There was a delay of a few seconds, and then the Irken requested appeared on the main view screen, hand raised in salute. “My Tallest?” Suddenly his eyes widened in confusion. “Zim?”
Nodding, Zim grinned. “Tallest Zim is fine, Commander Zen. I’m calling to notify you of our plans.”
“Our?” he quirked one of his antennae, hand lowering to his side.
Zim grinned, waving expansively to the officers surrounding him. “I and my crew.”
Zen’s jaw dropped. “You…you took over the Massive?!”
“You could say that, yes.” Zim smiled proudly. “The Armada is still on course towards Irk?”
He nodded, although his expression was uneasy. “Yes…”
“Excellent. Advisor Kha has helped me work out a way to ensure that The Massive and the rest of the Armada reach Irk at the same time. But I’ll let him explain.”
Zim motioned to Kha, who stepped up beside him and addressed Commander Zen. He seemed moderately reassured by the apparent camaraderie between Zim and the Advisor, who would certainly have been one of the most loyal to Tallests Red and Purple. And if Kha was now loyal to Zim, it was obviously for a good reason.
When the procedure had been outlined fully, Zen saluted. “Orders received and understood. I will relay them to the Fleet, Tallest Zim.” He grinned and nodded at him. “Long live the Empire. Zen out.”

Dib completed his analysis of the elements, yawning and sitting back. He’d been at it for over an hour and a half, and was starting to get a bit of a headache, but he didn’t mind. He absolutely loved how much knowledge the Irkens had at their fingertips. Dib felt his stomach rumble, and he removed the visor and gloves, rising to his feet and jumping in startlement when he almost walked right into a veritable wall of Irken officers. He blinked at them. “Uh…is there a problem?”
The two Medical Officers Dib had been working with, Tana and Jes, smiled and shook their heads. “We were just watching you work.”
Dib blushed awkwardly. “F-for two hours?”
The crowd of Irkens blinked at him, then looked at each other in surprise.
“Was it really that long?”
Rubbing the back of his neck, Dib chuckled softly, immensely flattered. “Yeah…”
The Science Officers and Techs murmured among themselves as they dispersed, and Tana shrugged. “Your procedure is very interesting. Is the rest of your race so resourceful?”
Dib snorted, his smile disappearing instantly, replaced by a dark scowl. “I prefer not to speak of them.” He shut down his laptop and closed it, removing his labcoat and hanging it on the back of his swivel-chair. “I have to go get something to eat, and I’ll be right back.”
The Medical officers watched him leave, puzzled by the human’s sudden change in demeanor.

Finished relaying the message to Commander Zen, Zim nodded to the crew and left the Control Deck to go to the cafeteria level for a snack. He grinned when he saw Dib sitting at one of the tables. The human’s back was to him, so he took the opportunity to creep up behind him silently, slipping his arms around Dib’s neck, chuckling when his human jumped in surprise. He purred, running his tongue along the edge of Dib’s ear, pleased by the way he gasped and shuddered.
“Greetings, Dib-human.” Zim tugged on Dib’s nipples through the only T-shirt the human had left in his possession, confused when Dib tried to pull away. Frowning, he released Dib and sat down in the chair next to him. When Dib only sighed and lowered his head, Zim reached out and put a long finger under his chin, tilting Dib’s head up and forcing him to look at him. “What’s wrong?”
Dib winced. “I’m just not in the mood.”
Zim scowled. “You know that’s not what I was asking about, Dib-worm.”
The human clenched his teeth and pulled away from Zim’s touch again, folding his arms on the table and muttering. “I’m just…in a bad mood. It’s nothing.”
Zim sighed, the scowl fading as he shook his head. “If it was nothing, then you wouldn’t…” Zim stood, his antennae lowering in resignation. “Never mind.” He went over to the snack bar and retrieved a soda and a slice of Irken pizza, then came back and sat across from Dib, eating in silence.
Dib felt guilty for brushing Zim off, but the simplest explanation for his behaviour was that he was in a bad mood. For the first time in a few weeks, he felt truly and thoroughly depressed. He sighed, his appetite having faded completely.
“You don’t know what it’s like to hate your own species, Zim.” Dib murmured, shaking his head.
About to take a bite of his slice of pizza, Zim blinked at him, then lowered it. “What made you bring that up?” He quirked an antenna.
Dib sighed, clenching his fists. “I’ve just been doing a lot of work on the Science Deck, and…I guess your officers were watching me.”
Zim smiled proudly, his gaze possessive. “So?”
“Zim, I’m not typical of my species, and I hate that your officers think that the rest of humanity is in any way like me.” Dib snapped, scowling down at the table.
Surprised by Dib’s anger, Zim set his slice of pizza down. “Dib…” When his human didn’t even look at him, Zim’s expression became almost compassionate. He reached across the table and gently placed his gloved hand over one of Dib’s.
Dib gazed down at Zim’s hand over his for a long moment, then sighed softly and turned his over, twining their fingers together.
“When I assume control of Impending Doom Two, your planet will be first on the agenda, Dib.” A sadistically affectionate smile graced Zim’s features when Dib lifted his head…
…and smiled back.
