Six

Vlad’s POV

I watched the workers fix the window and install the security system, a quick glance at the coffee cup in my hand told me that I was shaking. I didn’t want to go lay down with people I didn’t know in my house, I swallowed nervously I sort of lived in the middle of nowhere but there were a few other houses near me. Every time headlights went by I panicked a little, I had a feeling he knew something was wrong and I didn’t want to talk about it. My body was aching I had showered while I was waiting for the repairmen to come. I gripped the cup in my hand as the scenes from earlier replayed in my head over and over. What the hell is wrong with me? I should know better he wouldn’t want some useless damaged man. I dropped the cup and watched it shatter as my heart ached.

I wanted him to want me, my whole life I have accepted people turning their back on me but this is the one time I knew it would kill me. I hurried into the kitchen I wouldn’t let anyone aside from Danny see me cry.

Danny pulled into the driveway, they hadn’t mentioned that he could be headed toward a relationship with Vlad that would have started a whole new feud for sure. He asked Sam if she could wait for movers to come get his things. He glanced at the repairmen that were finishing up then walked into the kitchen. Vlad was leaning against the counter with his back against the doorway.

“Vlad what happened?”

He jumped, he really hadn’t sensed Danny’s presence, he cleared his throat and turned around he couldn’t tell him and shook his head. Danny sighed and walked over to pull him close.

“Don’t lie to me, Dani told me what Clockwork told you I know better.”

Vlad slumped in his embrace and shook his head, he didn’t make a sound but Danny could feel his tears soaking his shoulder of his shirt as he clung to him. Danny stroked his hair gently and leaned against the counter as he held him.

“It’s okay Vlad I’m here, everything will be okay.”

Vlad clung a little more.

“....Just don’t make me tell you what happened........it’s obvious.”

The next morning Vlad woke up in Danny’s embrace again they actually made it to his bed, his head was laying on Danny’s chest and his right arm was resting across his stomach. Danny was holding him under the covers. He looked up and Danny was glancing at the window he looked annoyed.

“Daniel....”

“You need me to get you something?”

“No, what’s the matter?”

“I’m just frustrated I wish I could have been there.”

“It’s not your fault.,..”

“And it’s not your fault either, I need to protect you, I won’t be leaving you alone again so get use to it.”

Vlad blushed a little.

“Little badger...”

Danny rolled over so he could hold him tighter.

“I’ll make you something to eat.”

“No, I’m not hungry.”

“Don’t care you don’t eat enough.”

“Whatever Daniel.”

Danny was making breakfast while Vlad rested on the couch, he felt a shiver and looked up.

“Morning Clockwork you want some pancakes?”

He smiled slightly.

“I didn’t come to eat Danny but thank you anyways.”

Danny flipped them and nodded.

“What did you need?”

“You were wondering how much he had been attacked to be handling this so well, so I came here for you.”

Danny turned off the stove and set the food on plates.

“I don’t think you want those details, but I will tell you that it’s mostly due to the bond you have, if you left, this would kill him.” he said matter of factly.

Danny tensed.

“He will heal as quickly as he breaks down because his phantom that he has bonded with as fully as you have bonded with yours knows there is a mate he can rely on. It’s not something he’s use to, I’ll tell you now I have considered him a friend this is hard on him he’s been a lone wolf for a long time. You’re emotions will come strongly, after all you’ve been on opposite sides for a long while but you can’t say you’ve ever truly hated him, can you?”

Danny shook his head.

“I know you will find James and get the revenge you need, but there is something odd about him even I cannot sense him. Though I wish I could give you better news all you can do now is stay close to Plasmius, strengthen the bond.”

Danny nodded, it was aggravating knowing he couldn’t immediately track this guy down like he wanted to but he could focus on Vlad, he knew his mate needed him he shook Clockwork’s hand.

“Thank you.”

The older ghost nodded and started to fade.

“There is a lot I need to teach you about the bond but it’s more important for you to be with Plasmius.”

He faded not giving Danny a chance to say anything more, Danny picked up the plates and set them on the dining table knowing Vlad wouldn’t eat on the couch. As he thought Vlad walked in, he had a slight limp but he was determined to make it to the table on his own.

“You could depend on me a little more you know.”

He scoffed.

“I could, but I can handle walking a few steps just fine.”

“Sure you can, that limp is really becoming.”

“Oh is it? Thank you little badger it’s all the rage you know.”

“Sure thing fruit loop.”

They laughed, being together would do them both some good even if they weren’t honestly together.

A few weeks later
Vlad’s POV

It was hard I was worried that I was driving Daniel nuts hanging around him all the time he insisted it was fine. When I woke up alone and sobbed even though it was ridiculous because he’d only left the bed to go to the bathroom he never got angry with me. He didn’t seem to have a problem holding me after, he doesn’t realize how much I’m depending on him he always tells me that I should depend on him more and I couldn’t do it. This can’t go on I have to show him that I can stand on my own two feet but it’s so hard. The aches and pains had faded I still walked with a bit of a limp but I’d be fine, now I’m standing in my room leaning against my vanity he’s still asleep.

Part of me wants to wake him up just to speak to him for a few minutes, that was why I got out of bed in the first place. I couldn’t do that he was working so hard to be there for me he needed to sleep he need time to himself when he was awake. I swallowed, I could tell him I was fine and convince him to go out with his friends. Speaking of, Tucker and Sam had come over for dinner a few times already though I originally didn’t want to try and separate Daniel from his friends after speaking with them I was glad I gave them internships as well. They started in the middle of fall when it got colder. I guess I wanted them to have some time like they haven’t in a while, they helped him with his ghost hunting and were always on alert.

Now that the unstable ghost portal was destroyed they could finally enjoy themselves a little, it was partly....mostly my fault they couldn’t but I wanted to make up for it. Clockwork has spoken to me briefly and he says it’s common to want to be near your mate even when you don’t realize what they are to you. That’s no excuse looking back I didn’t have to go out of my way to ruin his life, I swallowed the lump in my throat I really didn’t deserve to be as close to him as I was getting. I walked over and bent down to kiss him I should have woken him up for this but I didn’t want him to feel pressured. Clockwork said this was more intense for me because I was raised different and was much older. I brushed the hair out of his eyes wishing I could do something to make up for what I’ve done.

‘I’m sorry Danny.....for everything.’

I took a breath, really Vlad, this is no time to be crying he’s here he hasn’t left but he could and I wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to.

“Vlad?”

I looked up, we were watching some old movie, my head was in his lap and he was softly stroking my hair as he often did. Sam had kidnapped my cat who I hadn’t seen much with everything that was going on, she never liked being near me when I was upset. At least I knew she wasn’t in danger at their house.

“Hmm?”

“Did you hear me?”

“No Daniel, I’m sorry what did you say?”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Mr. Perfect wasn’t listening? Are you alright?” he said with a laugh.

I loved his laugh it was soothing.

“Oh just tell me.”

“My mom wanted to know if we wanted to go out to eat with her, Jazz, and dad, Jazz wants to introduce me to her new boyfriend.”

Vlad looked uncomfortable at the thought.

“My dad won’t bother you.”

“Are you sure? We haven’t spoken to each other since the party.”

“It will be fine.”

“I suppose, I can be an adult about this.”

Danny smiled.

“Good.”

“What time?”

“Seven.”

“That’s in a couple of hours, you asked now why?”

“Because I know you can be mature and that you are so obsessive about looking your best when we go out anywhere.”

He huffed.

“Fine I’ll go get ready.”

They went out to a nice Chinese restaurant there was a little bit of tension but of course Jack became really easy going when the appetizers arrived. Jazz’s boyfriend was really tall, he had long black hair, pale green eyes, and tan skin. He was wearing a black suit and was quite affectionate to Jazz. She introduced him as Nicolas but as soon as they entered the building they knew he was a ghost they couldn’t be sure which one he was though. When he went to the bathroom Danny went to investigate. Nicolas was waiting for him.

“I already know what you’re going to say and I’m not here to fight I love your sister she’s my mate.”

Danny crossed his arms.

“You came to kill her....?” he asked nervously.

Nicolas looked offended.

“No that’s why I have a human form, it was a gift from Clockwork he’d more powerful than you think.”

Danny rubbed the back of his neck.

“I’m sorry I’m just worried about her.”

“You should be, we’re not exactly friends and I fully accept that you will make my life hell every time you see us together because we’ve never been friends.”

“Oh come on, I’m sitting with Plasmius without a care in the world, I know people can change.”

“I may or may not have been confused with the Sandman.”

Danny’s jaw dropped.

“Nocturne!”

He shrugged.

“I was expecting that reaction....”

Danny rubbed his temples.

“Oh what’s next will Penelope come and hook up with Kwan...or will Ember hook up with my little sister or something.”

He scoffed.

“I think Penelope likes women, and Ember is with Skulker.”

Danny looked at him.

“Have you not seen their kid? They just had a baby.”

“Jeeze I’m missing out, I’m going to have and take Plasmius around the ghost zone to see what else we missed.”

He held out his hand.

“I won’t bully you too much just take good care of my sister.”

Nicolas shook it.

“Never thought I’d be here shaking your hand.”

“And I never thought I’d have to claim Plasmius.”

“You’re a liar, you and Plasmius?”

“We’re moving in that direction.”

“Well how do you like that? Let’s go back before they think one of us killed the other one.”

Danny nodded and they walked back to the table, Jazz gave Danny a look and he smirked at her.

“You have my blessings Jazz.”

She rolled her eyes with a grin.

“Since when do I need your blessing?”

“Since I’m still more awesome than you are.”

She burst into a fit of giggles, Danny gave Vlad a reassuring squeeze on his thigh under the table silently telling him they didn’t have to worry about the ghost. Vlad nodded and looked down to hide the blush. He touched him gently quite often but until now he hasn’t touched him under the belt, Vlad wondered if Danny knew what thoughts he had just put into his head. They ate and everything seemed fine Danny noticed Vlad seemed off. The entire time he was focusing on the smallest touch that didn’t mean what his body thought it did. He was frustrated he’d been so unsatisfied, considering the rape and abuse who could blame him, with James that Danny as his mate was driving him crazy. He never thought he would have to go through puberty twice if this is how it was going to be he was sure he really would go crazy.

“Are you okay?” Danny asked as they drove back home.

“Just fine.” Vlad said quietly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, just tired, always happens when I eat Chinese food it’s nice to sleep on a full stomach.”

Danny absently squeezed his hand, accepting that answer, Vlad cleared his throat it was getting hot far too hot for his liking he was going to have to talk to Clockwork about this, but for now.

“But there is something I wanted to ask you.”

“Yeah?” Danny asked as they stopped at a red light.

“......Will you kiss me?” he mumbled.

Danny looked at him for a second before he leaned over to cup the other’s cheek and press his lips against his. Vlad moaned against his mouth as the little peck quickly turned into a battle of the tongues. They pulled away as the car behind them honked, Danny blushed seeing that the light was green. He made a note that they would definitely be sleeping in separate beds.

‘Danny this is no time to be taking advantage of him.....damn pre-pubescent hormones that for some reason stay forever because they only show up at the worst times.’

He continued scolding himself while Vlad who was confused wondered if he was the one who had just done something wrong.

Of course because that is how their life works, there was an audience for their little show and he wasn’t happy about it.
