The summer sun barely peeked over the trees as a small car drove up the dirt road. Misty wisps crept along the dew-kissed forest floor as it reached a small clearing crowded with cars and SUVs, most of the latter parked just in the woods to leave room for less able vehicles. After stopping, the car's passenger door swung open.
“I don’t know why I have to be here,” Vanessa huffed as she got out of the car. She slammed the door for emphasis.
After getting out herself, Charlene Doofenshmirtz stared at her daughter with some disappointment. She was just a bit taller and skinnier than her daughter, but her pronounced chest and hips made it clear where Vanessa got her curves from. They also shared the same dark and silky hair, Mom’s being neck length and styled to flow around her classically beautiful face. Even her somewhat nerdy eyeglasses couldn’t dampen her radiance.
She finally answered, “A young girl is lost and probably very scared and confused. The least you can do is help look for her. Besides, I thought you didn’t like being at your father’s.”
Vanessa continued protesting as Charlene took her by the elbow and led her towards the other volunteers. “But he’s up to something. Something really bad — I just know it! When I got home last night I heard him in his room saying stuff like, ‘No no no, I can’t untie you. It’s for your own good... Now put this in your mouth and...’”
“Vanessa!” her mother snapped. She began rubbing her temples. “I don’t want to hear about your father’s sex life.” Then she sighed. “Look, Linda is one of my best friends, so you’re going to join the search and that’s that.”
Vanessa stopped short, her lips closed tightly in an angry pout. Charlene paused and looked back at her, but she let her daughter have a moment. The girl inhaled sharply through her nose and then continued walking. Finally she asked, “So why’s she making up crazy stories all the time?”
Without missing a beat Charlene casually asked, “Oh? This from the girl who swears her father’s being stalked by a platypus?”
“But Perry’s real!” Vanessa whined before suddenly realizing how it sounded. She grumbled as they reached the rest of the group of fifty or so people and then waited quietly. Though she didn’t try to hide how annoyed she was.
Meanwhile Charlene greeted the other volunteers, explaining that the police told Mrs. Fletcher to stay at home in case Candace returned, and Mrs. Garcia-Shapiro was with her for moral support.
As Vanessa looked around she couldn’t help but be impressed by how many people had turned out, though she did her best to hide it. She recognized Jeremy Johnson, looking as if he was about to break down while a few men patted his back and reassured him. Then she noticed a bunch of Fireside Girls by the edge of the clearing, leaning over or on their knees as they reviewed maps. One in particular stood out: a slightly taller, dark haired girl whom Vanessa would often see in passing or selling things in her father’s building, though the girl usually wore a blue-themed uniform instead of the standard orange one she had on now. They had never actually met and Vanessa didn’t even know her name, but a knot formed in her stomach when she realized the girl was crying. Hard.
But Vanessa did recognize her underclassman who was comforting the youngster, Stacy Hirano, but only from seeing and hearing about her at high school. The young Doofenshmirtz feigned absentmindedness as she wandered closer to listen.
Stacy got on her knees and hugged Isabella tightly, stroking her hair while gently shushing her. Then Stacy kneeled back and brushed away some of the little girl’s tears before reaching into her own bra for some tissues. She wiped Isabella’s cheeks and nose before getting the youngster to blow it, between her shudders and squeaks. “Shhh. It’s okay. We’ll find Candace. Don’t worry.”
“Candace ran away ‘cause of me,” Isabella said through her tiny gasps. “When she got home I went to see her and... and...” She suddenly grimaced as fresh tears leaked from her eyes.
With her own eyes welling up, Stacy gripped Isabella’s shoulder and dabbed her reddened face. “No, sweetie, it’s not your fault. It couldn’t be.”
Between convulsions Isabella squealed, “Now she hates me and she never wants to see me again!”
“Shhh... Shhh... No, baby, Candace could never hate you.” Stacy held the little girl tightly as her own shining tears trickled into the little girl’s hair. “Candace loves you so much! You could never do anything to make her stop loving you. She’s always wished so hard that you really were her little sister, she loves you so much.”
Isabella calmed a little. “Really?”
Stacy nodded. “Really.”
A police officer started giving instructions and assigning territories. With a little water from Isabella’s canteen and more dabbing, Stacy cleaned up Isabella’s face. Then she emptied her training bra and stuffed the remaining tissues into Isabella’s pocket, just in case.
Vanessa didn’t realize she was staring at the two until her mother’s voice startled her. “Vanessa?”
Charlene put her hand on Vanessa’s shoulder then led her over to the girls she’d been spying on.
Stacy was whispering to Isabella, “Now don’t tell her I told you this — don’t tell anyone this — but Candace is always saying she wishes you and Phineas...”
“You two are Candace’s friends, right?” Charlene interrupted.
As they looked up Isabella took on the same look of apprehension that Vanessa was giving them. She managed to nod as Stacy stood up and answered, “Yes?”
“It might be better if you two split up and go with people who don’t know her. That way there’s a better chance she’ll be found by someone she recognizes. It’ll be easier on her.”
“I guess you’re right,” Stacy reluctantly agreed. Then she leaned down to Isabella and asked, “Is that okay?” Isabella glanced nervously at the Doofenshmirtzes and nodded vigorously.
“Great.” Charlene held her daughter’s elbow and motioned towards the little girl. “Why don’t you two team up,” she instructed. Then she turned towards Vanessa and added, “You need to be with someone who knows her way around the woods.”
“Pfft. Me and my friends are always hanging out in the...” Vanessa started to explain. Charlene looked at her sternly, making the teen realize what she was saying. She quickly changed her tune. “Yeah, you’re right.”
The police officer called out towards the four, “You! Pair off and take red dot and blue star trails.”
Vanessa snatched up Isabella’s hand and quickly stepped away, startling the little girl for an instant before Isabella hopped a step to keep up. Charlene sighed to herself, “Maybe some time with Candace’s friends will make Vanessa see why this is important.”
As they got to the trail head Vanessa slowed down and let go of Isabella’s hand. “So what’s your name?”
Momentarily staring down at the ground she softly answered, “Isabella.”
“Hi Isabella,” the teenager continued. “I’m...”
“Vanessa,” Isabella said before cringing a little and looking away. Vanessa stared curiously and the girl explained, “I see you around a lot.”
“Oh, yeah.”
There was an uncomfortable silence as they made their way deeper into the woods, scanning for any trace of Candace. Yet Vanessa caught Isabella occasionally staring up at her instead, then suddenly looking away when noticed. Vanessa finally spoke up, “So, you’re really close to Candace, huh? I hear she’s kind of...” she struggled to find a kind word, “sensational.”
Instead of answering Isabella bit her lower lip for a few seconds, then she spoke, “Vanessa?”
“Yes?”
“How do you feel about,” she hesitated, “busting people?”
Vanessa’s eyes went wide and she looked away, pretending to search. Her voice shook a little when she finally answered, “Huh? That’s a weird question.” Then she turned around and noticed that the little girl had stopped, her head hung. Vanessa went back and crouched down, trying to look up into Isabella’s sad face. “Are you okay?”
Isabella just continued, “Candace is always trying to bust people for doing bad stuff. But no one ever believes her.”
The words hit Vanessa like a ton of bricks. She was suddenly very ashamed and couldn’t even speak, but she rested a hand on Isabella’s shoulder. The girl was shaking and her breathing was becoming shorter, deeper. Vanessa thought Isabella was starting to cry so she didn’t hesitate to reach deep into Isabella’s pocket for the tissues. Before she could fish them out she felt the girl’s little hand on the side of her head, turning her face back towards Isabella’s.
Then Vanessa was taken completely by surprise. Isabella leaned in and kissed Vanessa hotly on the lips. When the teenager gasped in shock Isabella pressed her mouth in a little harder and teased the teen’s lips with her tongue.
Despite the deep warmth of the kiss Vanessa’s whole body went cold with fright. She fell back on her bottom, but with one hand in Isabella’s pocket and the other on her shoulder she brought the youngster down on top of her. By the time Vanessa got one hand free to support herself Isabella was lying on top of her, clinging tightly.
Vanessa managed to push Isabella away from her. She only caught a glimpse of the little girl’s hurt expression before Isabella sat back on Vanessa’s legs and slumped. She cringed and tried to avoid Vanessa’s horrified stare.
Her whole body trembling, Isabella squeaked, “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to do it like that!”
Though thoroughly stunned, Vanessa ignored her awkward position and leaned forward to comfort the girl. Vanessa didn’t believe she’d ever be more shocked in her life until she held the girl’s arm. Isabella’s whole body tensed up and she looked at Vanessa, terrified. “Please don’t hurt me!” she cried.
“Whoa!” Vanessa immediately let go and shook her head in disbelief, but then she started feeling sick to her stomach. She stared at the trembling girl who seemed too scared to even cry. Her own hands now shaking, Vanessa slowly and gently petted Isabella’s long slender arms, then she lifted one hand to cup her face. The little girl twitched as Vanessa’s hand approached again but she refused to pull away, and then she was relieved to feel the teenager’s gentle touch. Vanessa swallowed hard and forced herself to ask, “Is someone making you do things you don’t want to?”
Isabella looked straight at her with deeply sad eyes. She didn’t even need to nod. Vanessa knew the answer.
Vanessa’s heart pounded and she felt numb all over. She couldn’t tell if she was gripping Isabella’s shoulder too hard. “Who... Can you tell me who it is?” Isabella only hunched her shoulders a bit as she continued staring. “Or her,” the teen added as an afterthought. “If you tell me I promise we can make him stop.”
Isabella pulled herself back but Vanessa didn’t let go. The little girl stared below Vanessa’s gaze and slowly shook her head.
“Okay, you don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Vanessa reassured her. Isabella stopped trying to get away as Vanessa wiped the tears from her cheeks. The older girl finally broke the unbearable silence. “So,” Vanessa wasn’t sure if she really wanted to know, but she had to ask, “why did you kiss me?”
Isabella took a deep breath yet nearly whispered her response, “Because I wanted to do it with someone I like.”
Vanessa struggled to not show how freaked out she was. “Uhm, but we just met.”
“No. There was one other time,” the little girl started, “I was in your building selling Fireside Girls Sauerkraut.”
Vanessa interrupted, “Wait, that sounds familiar, but wasn’t that years ago?”
“Yeah, right after I joined the Fireside Girls, and I wasn’t that good. Your father got mad and slammed the door in my face and I started to cry. I felt like I was a total failure.”
“That’s right! Now I remember,” Vanessa interjected. “And I yelled at him and made him buy some or something, right?”
“Actually,” Isabella hesitated to contradict her, “that’s not how it happened. You came out and held my hand and patted my back until I felt better. Then you helped me practice my sales pitch and even showed me how to make puppy-dog eyes ‘n stuff. Then you told me I could do it if I really tried and you hid around the corner while I rang the doorbell again. Because of what you taught me your dad bought a whole pallet and even thanked me. I was top seller even though I was the new girl. After that I always tried harder at everything, never giving up, and now I’m even the troop leader.”
“That’s great.” Vanessa was still trying to recall what the child remembered so clearly. “But I still don’t understand what that has to do with, um, this,” she said while motioning between them with her hands.
“After, you gave me a big hug and told me how great I was before going back inside.” Isabella got up and turned around, hanging her head. She mumbled but the teen could still hear, “And I’ve been in love with you ever since.”
Vanessa was too stunned to say anything but she managed to get back up on her knees. She put a hand on Isabella’s shoulder, frantically trying to think of what to say. Instead the little girl immediately put her hand over the teen’s, holding them tight. “I didn’t understand that’s what it was, but then I started to realize it wasn’t because I was grateful or thought you were cool or something. I started to realize I was really different from all the other girls. For years I’ve had to pretend that I have a big crush just so the other girls wouldn’t suspect anything.”
Isabella turned back around without letting go of the teen’s hand, then looked up with her big shining eyes. “I knew I couldn't tell anyone. Not my friends. Not my parents. Not even you. Because if anyone knew that’s all people would ever see me as, no matter how smart or good or talented I am.” The little girl’s voice grew shaky, “So I told myself I had no choice... that I had to do it or else everyone would find out. But I did have a choice. I could have said no! Or I should have told someone!” Isabella sank to her knees and started weeping. “Then just when I can’t keep it inside anymore you, the girl I want more than anyone in the whole world to like me... You’re the one I have to tell what a liar I am, all the disgusting things I’ve done, and especially that I let it happen to other girls too because I was too afraid. Too afraid of what everyone would think of me!”
Vanessa caught Isabella as she slumped over her shoulder. Still holding Isabella’s hand tightly, she put her free arm around the girl and patted her on the back. “Because of you I thought I could do anything,” Isabella sniffled, “even tell you how I feel someday. I mean, not like this, but just so you’d know how special you are to me, even if you’ll never like me that way. I thought you’d be proud. But now I’m just a total failure like when you first found me.”
“No,” Vanessa said softly as she leaned back and lifted Isabella’s face. “No, you’re not a failure at all. You’re just a kid and you’re scared. And even if you weren’t it’s still okay to be scared, whether it’s because you’re gay or because someone’s doing things to you.” Vanessa held the little girl and thought for a few moments, not sure if she wanted to make a corny Afterschool Special speech. “No matter how strong you are sometimes there’s nothing we can do to stop people from hurting us, no matter how hard we try. And sometimes we’re even afraid to try. Even I’m afraid to say anything when my dad hurts my feelings, and even if he didn’t mean to.” Vanessa urged the girl into standing but remained on her knees herself.
“But all the stuff you just told me, how bad it is and especially how much harder it was to tell me than anyone else... Well, I think you’re the bravest person I know.” Vanessa pulled her in for a tight hug and added, “And just so you know, I am very proud of you.”
The tears stopped instantly. Even if it didn't solve any of the big problems, just knowing that she'd finally admitted her feelings to Vanessa was a huge weight off Isabella's chest. That Vanessa had replied only with kindness momentarily washed away most of her deepest fears and self-doubt. Isabella rested her chin on Vanessa's shoulder while thinking, then asked simply, “So what do I do?”
Vanessa broke the hug and got up. “First, we find Candace.” The teen held out her hand to help the girl up. “After that, it's up to you.”
Once she was up Isabella was surprised to find Vanessa still holding her hand while brushing off the loose leaves and pine needles. Then the two continued their search, hand-in-hand.
To be continued... with any luck!
