/Damn./ Staghart thought as he looked at the empty space before him. /He didn't even get to finish saying good-bye./ He gave a sad sigh as he regarded the emptiness before him, echoing the emptiness he felt inside. Coco's hands were on his shoulders.
"Shall I get out the Häagen-Dazs, luv?" she said, half-jokingly.
"No thank you, Coco." he said. "I...I think I need to be on my own just now." He climbed the ledge of the parapet and jumped, spreading his wings.
"He'll be alright, won't he?" Coco asked as Ayala and Una joined her on the terrace.
"I'm sure he will be." said Una.
"I hope he will." said Ayala.
Half melted snow crunched under Staghart's hooves as he landed among the trees. He smiled a little as he remembered Tabitha, Blaine and Nigel running up to him, all trying to talk at once. Eventually, he was able to sort out that one of the twins (they weren't sure which) had taken Lex prisoner. He and the six hatchlings planned a rescue mission that consisted basically of sneaking up and throwing lots of snowballs. Amp had managed to spirit Lex away in the ensuing chaos.
This tree was the one they had hidden behind. The one with limbs laden with mistletoe. Amp had visited a few days later and used his talons to carve a heart on it. He gently ran his talon tips over the "AMP + LEX" he had etched into the bark. He leaned morosely against the trunk, fighting a hitch in his breath. After his break-up with Ulrich, he had attacked the pine he carved their names on until it was as scarred as he felt inside. It was different this time. There was no anger, no bruised pride. Just cold sadness and loneliness that was leaving him numb.
He remembered how nervous and shy Lex had been, and how endearing it made him. He remembered the way Lex closed his eyes when he stroked his brow ridges and how he trembled when he stroked his scalp. That wonderful, firm, suede soft body felt so right in his arms. Just when he was afraid the little gargoyle he was fast growing fond of was going to run screaming, Lex hugged him tight and nestled against his chest. Staghart remembered the cute giggle Lex made whenever his fur tickled his ear. When Lex reached up and touched Staghart's ear, the sensation did a little more than tickle. It had been an erotic sensation that crawled through every nerve in his body. It made him want to bring Lex closer to him. He wanted to wrap his wings around him and draw him so close they became one.
A cold snowflake landed on Staghart's nose, snapping him out of his dreams and memories. Well, sitting out here and moping wouldn't get him anywhere. He decided he'd go into town. Maybe beating the snot out of a couple of Skinheads would make him feel better.

"I'm starting to realize why humans get so poetic about sunsets." said Hudson, as he watched the sky turn gold, pink and purple. He suddenly realized Lex wasn't there. Lad must've slipped off when he was admiring the sky.
Hudson left his chair and went looking for Lex. He smiled, remembering himself what it was to be young and lovestruck. He wondered when the lad would feel ready to be honest about himself. He had suspected for a long time. He remembered how Lex used to look at Goliath, and how close the poor lad came to weeping when Goliath announced that he had chosen a mate. Then there was that body builder magazine Lex found not long after they first awakened in New York. Dingo had been the centerfold in that issue. Shortly after Lex became disillusioned with the Pack, Hudson saw Lex feeding the same magazine into Xanatos' paper shredder, cursing a blue streak while he was at it. Then there were a few incidents when Lex would get jumpy if someone walked in while he was on the internet. There was also the time Lex ogled Griff the first time they met. Once they got to England, of course, the lad couldn't take his eyes off Staghart. It looked like Lex had finally found someone who could return his affections. The lad was in for some hurt.
He found him in the living room with Coldstone and Coldfire. "And then the waves are picked up by the television set." Lex was explaining to them. "And the little pictures that were broken up get put back together and that's how it works."
"Amazing what these humans can do." said Coldfire.
"I particularly like this one program called /Star Trek The Next Generation/." said Coldstone. "That Worf would make a fine gargoyle."
"He's certainly the most handsome one on that show." said Coldfire. Coldstone gave her an odd look. "Oh, I'm just saying he's rather good looking." she said, placating her mate by rubbing his arm. "He has a few minor flaws. He doesn't have any wings and his tail could stand to be longer."
"He doesn't have a tail." Coldstone pointed out.
"I was being charitable." said Coldfire.
"There's nothing wrong with short tails." Lex commented.
"The sun's set." Hudson told them. "We best be getting home soon."
They had meant to surprise the clan, but were surprised themselves. Brooklyn was suddenly 40 years older, with a mate, a 19 year old son, an egg about a year from hatching and a beast. They barely had time to enjoy their reunion when Elisa ran in and announced that the Pack was trashing Times Square. Lex glided out with his clan to stop them. Maybe beating the snot out of the Pack would make him feel better.

"So then the other nun says 'Oh look, hand cream!'" said Pollux. Castor laughed and slapped Staghart on the back.
"Get it, Stags?" laughed Castor. "Hand cream?"
"Hilarious." Staghart deadpanned. He left them.
"Be ready to go in ten." said Pollux. "You're scheduled to work with us at Into The Mystic tonight, remember?"
"I know." Staghart sighed.
"Cheer up there, mate." said Castor. "Tell ya what, we'll play that statue prank on the customers!"
"We'll let you have first go." said Pollux.
"Do what you want." sighed Staghart. "But, I'm really not in the mood tonight." Staghart had to give the Twins credit. Ever since Lex left for Manhattan, they'd been trying to cheer him up with their antics. They hadn't even annoyed him by playing ring toss with his antlers. In the week since Lex had been gone, they had sent each other E-mails and messages whenever they could. They had gone on a few adventures together on The Realm with a human female rogue called Guinevere Silverlake. Staghart had recently sent him a voice mail. He had played the voice mail Lex had sent him back several times. Still, it wasn't the same. He wanted Lex with him. Even the dreams he had about him during the day weren't enough. He looked out the window. Looked like tonight was going to be damp.
Someone touched his shoulder. "You miss him, don't you?" Coco asked sympathetically. Staghart could only trust himself to nod. "Listen, mate, if you go, I'll miss you. I won't deny it. But, you should do whatever makes you happy."
Staghart smiled at his rookery sister. "It might be awhile before I can save up enough for the trip."
"How much you need?" asked Coco.
"Cargo charges by weight." Staghart smirked. "And I'm not about to tell you what that is." Coco chuckled and hugged Staghart.
"You might not have to wait that long after all." said Griff, approaching with something flat in his hand.
"Griff?' said Coco. "Thought you went off with Arthur."
"We're leaving later tonight." said Griff. "But, I have something I want Staghart to have." Staghart took what Griff gave to him. At first glance, he thought it was just a Superman comic book. A second glance told him it wasn't just any Superman comic book. "Griff? This is never Superman Number One, is it?"
"Holding a car over his head isn't he?" Griff pointed at the cover picture. "Sorry, it's only in fair condition."
"Where did you get this?"
"Found it in a dust bin back in 1937." Griff replied. "Fascinating read, really. I tried to convince Una and Leo that we should sell comics at Into The Mystic, but they thought it was just a passing fad." He chuckled. "Anyway, I had this room in Knight's Spur that I made into a den of sorts. I had subscribed to dozens of magazines under the name Griff Featherstone. The den was a place to read film magazines and comics and listen to records."
"You mean that room Una and Leo kept locked up?" said Coco. "Always wondered about it."
"Yes, well, I suppose they couldn't bring themselves to deal with my collections." sighed Griff. "So they just locked it away. They unlocked it recently. Everything was just the way I left it, if caked in a layer of dust. My autographed Rita Hayworth was still on the wall. My records and magazines were all where I left them. Also found some photos that were given up for lost and a bag of the world's stalest liquorice allsorts. Decided to see if any of them counted as antiques. This Superman Number One isn't mint enough to net a million, but it should still get you a cargo ticket to New York at least." Staghart looked at the comic. He looked at Griff and was so overcome with gratitude that all he could do was embrace him. "Er...yes, that will do now, mate." said Griff. Staghart let him go.
"I'll scan it and put it on E-Bay for you." Coco offered, taking the comic.
"Oi! Staghart!" one of the twins (no telling which) yelled. "Quit pissin' 'round and come on!"
"You better go, luv." said Coco, patting her brother on the back. He smiled and left. She turned to Griff. "Thank you, Griff. This will mean a lot to him."
"Just doing what I can in the name of true love." Griff said with a bow.

Lex sat on one of the parapets and played a few bars from "Words" on his kazoo. Broadway landed beside him. "Nice tune." Broadway commented. "What's it called?"
"Oh, it's just something I heard over in London." Lex replied.
"Something got you down, little buddy?"
"Nah, I'm fine."
"Still weirded out about Brooklyn, huh?" Broadway guessed. "Listen, I know it's weird, but I was there when the Phoenix came for him. For a few horrible seconds, I thought he was gone forever. Having him back like this is weird, but it's better than not having him back at all. Of course between Egwardo, Nashville and Maggie being due in June, Angela's been getting this weird look. She keeps dropping hints about how she'd like a baby! Fortunately, she can't have one until she's 50, then we'd have to wait ten years for it to hatch. Maybe by then I'll be ready to be a dad."
"Broadway? What would you do if you had to be away from Angela? Like, far away. For a long time."
"To tell the truth, Lex, that's not something I even wanna think about." Broadway shuddered to think what would happen if the Phoenix had taken him or Angela.
"I think I left my heart in London." Lex sighed.
Broadway smiled. "Hey! Popped your cherry! Didn't ya?" He gave Lex a friendly punch in the arm. "Congrats! And you beat Brooklyn to it! Oh, wait, he lost his in the Edo Period, so he beat both of us."
"I think we're all a bit beyond that /American Pie/ crap." said Lex.
"Yeah, I guess we are." said Broadway. "This wouldn't have anything to do with that Evithar Whitehand person on the Realm, would it?"
Lex flushed. "How do you know about A-Evithar?"
Broadway extended his hand. "Shake hands with Guinevere Silverlake!"
"/You're/ Guinevere?"
"Thought it was a pretty name. Nothing in the rules says you have to play a character the same gender you are."
"That would explain Guinevere's lousy spelling."
"My lousy spelling? Evithar is the one who thinks 'color' is spelled with a u."
"He's British. That's the way it's spelled over there."
Broadway noticed the pronoun slip. "I noticed you've been getting a lot of e-mails from someone named Amp. That the one you're moping over?"
Lez knew he was blushing. "I...it doesn't matter."
"Is she pretty?" Broadway asked, wondering if he could get Lex to trip up again.
"Beautiful, actually." Lex said, ignoring Broadway's choice of pronoun. He stood up. "I'll see ya later." Lex said, walking away.
Lex signed in on the computer to check his e-mail. He had a voice message from Amp. It would feel nice to hear his voice for a change instead of just reading what he typed for him. Lex made sure the headphones were plugged in. He didn't want anyone else hearing this. He opened the file to hear Amp singing to him.
"Another day is gone. I'm still all alone. How can this be? You're not here with me."
Lex sighed and nearly melted into the computer chair. /Someday, my love./ Lex thought. /Someday./

And that's it, for now. I may write more on them later.
Sorry if I made any errors in the time. It's hard for me to estimate when exactly the sun would rise/set. Also, I keep forgetting EST isn't CST. I live in CST. I remember watching the Princess Diana funeral after midnight while babysitting. I once found a website with live video feed of the London skyline and watched the sunset while I ate lunch.
Weisman has said that he imagines Alan Cumming in the role of Staghart. If you'd like to hear what he would sound like singing the first line and chorus of Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone", go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICuMNQdZOJ8
OK, I had to delete the list of Things Castor and Pollux are Not Allowed to Do. AFF has a rule against list chapters. If I can get around to writing it, I may write another fic set in London during the time Lex was there. Imagine 'Clerks' with gargoyles and sex. (Well, sex with living people.)
