Repression and Repercussions
Chapter 7
Jane sighed while she lounged about in her living room. She could almost swear that she could still feel Daria’s warmth next to her, removing the chill of an uncaring world from her. Suddenly a knock sounded at the door, interrupting Jane’s blissful musings. Getting up she answered it, only to stare into the eyes of an older version of Daria. “Hello... Can I help you?”
“Yes, I need to talk to Jane. Is that you?” the older woman said seriously.
“Depends who you are,” Jane answered defensively.
“I’m Daria’s aunt Amy Barksdale, and by the response you’re Jane alright,” Amy countered with a smirk.
Jane nodded before pointing over to the couch where she had been resting. It wasn’t like she had anything better to do, so she didn’t mind talking to Amy for a little bit. Amy had sounded serious when she said that she needed to talk to her, it may be about Daria. Leading Amy into the living room Jane took a seat on the far end of the couch, waving for Amy to sit at the other end. Once Amy was seated Jane waited for a moment before asking, “What did you want to talk to me about?”
Amy sighed and interlaced her fingers under her chin before beginning. “I don’t know how much Daria told you about what she’s going through, but I thought I should let you know: It’s not going to be easy on her.”
“I know that, but Daria’s my best friend, and nothing will change that. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to help her,” Jane stated firmly. Despite the conviction in her voice she still felt herself tremble inside. Could she really do anything to help Daria? Wasn’t there a limit? She had told Daria a limitation already and Daria had accepted it, but would that remain?
“Could you sleep with her as a lover?” Amy asked, as though reading Jane’s inner doubts. “I had a friend just like you once, she... she couldn’t be my lover, and I couldn’t stop myself while we slept one night. We talked about it, and decided to try dating for a while, but... it didn’t work out. I just couldn’t stop myself from wan... no needing more, eventually she just couldn’t keep up, and we had a nasty fight.”
Jane stared at the wounded woman before her. She knew from talking with Daria that her aunt was important to Daria, and almost an exact duplicate, but... she didn’t have something Daria had. The inner strength Daria normally had was missing from Amy, almost like... almost like someone had ripped it away by a betrayal. Could this be Daria’s future? No, not if Jane Lane had anything to say about it.
“Amy, we... we had something similar to that already happen, and we’re friends now. She knows I won’t leave her, and that I need her support. I don’t know what else to tell you, except... I love Daria, maybe not as a lover, but she has a very special place in my heart, and if you think I could ever willingly hurt Daria, then I’m going to have to tell you to get out of this house now,” Jane said flatly, momentarily locking eyes with Amy.
Amy smirked and nodded before she stood up and stood in front of Jane quietly. Jane looked up at Amy curiously, until Amy bent down and hugged her close. “Thank you, if there’s ever anything, anything at all: don’t hesitate to call me.” Pulling back Amy held out her card, slipping it into the stunned young lady’s shirt pocket.
With a small smile Amy leaned back in and whispered into Jane’s ear, “Anything at all.” Pulling back she kissed Jane gently on the lips before parting their bodies, leaving Jane standing in the living room pondering if she was dreaming. Jane didn’t hear the door shut; the car peel away, or even her own thud when she landed on the sofa. She had been kissed before, Tom, Evan, that Bobby fellow from Brittany’s party, she had kissed a few boys in her time, but none, not a one made her heart race as had that momentary kiss from Daria’s aunt. She wasn’t a lesbian, she knew this... or at least, she thought she knew this.
Daria sighed setting aside the finished book; only to find her eyes resting on Stacy’s sleeping form. She should probably cover her up, or maybe call her parents to let them know where she was. Standing up Daria walked over to her closet and pulled a spare blanket and pillow out before walking back over to Stacy. Kneeling next to the sleeping girl she carefully lifted her head so she could slip the pillow underneath, hesitating momentarily when she started lowering it back down. Those gentle, red lips seemed to beg Daria to kiss them passionately. Stacy would understand, wouldn’t she? If she did it right, Stacy wouldn’t even wake up. Biting her lip Daria lay Stacy back down on the pillow and covered her with the blanket.
It wouldn’t have been right to steal a kiss from Stacy, no matter how much Stacy might accept it. Turning away Daria sat back against the wall, feeling her warmth that lingered on the hard surface. Her eyes continued to rest on the small figure curled up on her floor. How could someone so quiet cause so much turmoil in Daria? Daria sighed and let her eyes slide shut as she thought. Stacy was Quinn’s friend, and had come to her for help. She was confused about her sexuality, and quite possibly a lesbian with a crush on Quinn. She was also sleeping mere feet from Daria.
Slowly an image formed in her mind, there was Stacy, sleeping on a large four poster bed, in her renaissance fair outfit. Quinn entered the image wearing a shiny suit of silver armor with a large, pink plume out of the helmet’s crown. Kneeling next to the bed Quinn doffed her helm while her eyes gazed longingly at Stacy. She had traveled far, and through many dangers to reach her cursed princess, and now it was time to lift the spell. Leaning down Quinn gently kissed Stacy, whose eyes fluttered open once the two pairs of lips met. Slowly she looped her arms around Quinn’s neck, being careful to slip under the hair, and deepened the kiss. Quinn’s hand slid down Stacy’s arm to her shoulder, and then down along her side, coming to a stop at Stacy’s hip. Quinn scooped Stacy up into her arms and carried her away.
Daria opened her eyes again when she felt a blanket fall upon her legs. Looking up she saw Stacy with a look of wonder on her face.
“What?” Daria asked, trying to figure out Stacy’s look.
“Eep!” Stacy exclaimed while backing away, “I’m sorry, it’s just that I thought you were going to throw me out after I fell asleep, and then when I woke up with the blanket over me, and you sleeping against the wall, I thought I’d cover you up and leave. But I guess you weren’t asleep, or you wouldn’t have opened your eyes so suddenly. But I thought you were asleep because you were smiling, and I never saw you smile while you were awake. I promise I won’t tell anyone I saw you smile, it’s not like they’d believe a freak like me, so I think we can be safe in saying that your reputation is safe from being ruined by me, please don’t be mad.”
Daria held up a hand to get the rambling girl to stop for a moment. She had been smiling about Quinn and Stacy’s courtly love scene? Had she finally began to control the urges? Or had she placed a barrier about her sister that stopped her from seeing her in such a way? Either way she had to put that aside until later. Shifting her hand she pointed at the bed with a stern look, which caused Stacy to nearly leap out of her skin in a scramble over.
Relenting on her sternness a little Daria retook her chair and positioned it a little closer to the bed. She had to remember that Stacy was on edge already, and what she did now could push her to something drastic.
“So, you think you have a thing for Quinn,” Daria stated flatly, “And instantly you want to label yourself as a freak. Stacy, have you felt anything for anyone else?”
Stacy blushed slightly and nodded without a sound. Her eyes darted down towards the floor, as though trying to escape from Daria’s gaze.
“I’m guessing they were females as well, right?” Daria asked getting another nod from the oddly silent Stacy, “And from your silence, that you’d rather not talk about them. That’s alright. You might be a lesbian Stacy.”
The tears welling up in Stacy’s eyes told Daria that what she had just said wasn’t the right thing, but it was the honest thing. Daria sighed and held up her hand to stop Stacy before she could start what promised to be a tearful denial. “Stacy, there’s nothing wrong with being a lesbian. It is something that you’re born into, and to be honest, just something you have to get used to. Now, I think the best thing to do right now is to go home, get some sleep, and then when you have a clear head come back and talk to me again.”
Stacy sat watching Daria silently for a few minutes before nodding. “You’re probably right Daria, but... I... I don’t know what to do. The last few times I slept I’ve had these dreams...”
“Dreaming while you’re sleeping is normal Stacy. What type of dreams are they?” Daria asked.
“Umm... well... it’s about me and this girl, she’s not Quinn though... and we’re umm...” Stacy trailed off with a slight blush, her eyes not meeting Daria’s at all. “We’re kissing... and a lot more... and we’re both really enjoying it.”
“Did you enjoy the dream?” Daria continued, trying to ignore her piqued curiosity about who the other girl was. What would it matter really? Stacy’s love life was her own, and Daria shouldn’t try to change it to suit her fantasies.
“Yes... I did...” Stacy replied softly, her blush growing deeper, “Yo... err she was so gentle, so giving that it made me feel like I was flying. I really didn’t like waking up after that. I just wanted to stay in her arms forever, letting go of all my worries and anxieties, and just being with her.
Daria’s mind pictured herself holding a naked Stacy against her own heaving chest. Both were covered in a fine afterglow one gets after having had hours of hot, dirty sex. They were lounging in Daria’s room, entwined together, trying to catch their breaths. Slowly Stacy lifted her head up and kissed Daria tenderly.
Daria returned to reality only to find Stacy looking down at her hands while whispering softly, “I just wish I knew how to tell her.”
“Why not just come out and tell her? Let her know how you feel,” Daria stated flatly, trying to cover up her momentary loss of focus. She needed to control these images and dreams before they controlled her, and caused her to do something that’d hurt someone else.
Stacy bit her lower lip and nodded. “I suppose you’re right Daria, but I think I’m going to get some sleep and tell her tomorrow. Quinn... Quinn was only a momentary thing. I think. Thank you, Daria.”
“You’re welcome Stacy, and remember, I’m here for you,” Daria said, letting her worry break through her normally stoic cover. She should take her own advice and get some sleep; she was letting her emotions take over.
Stacy’s eyes lit up when she heard Daria trying to comfort her. It was a look of a abandoned puppy finally given a home. Something about it told Daria that her slip of emotion helped in more ways than she could figure out.
Stacy stood and walked over to Daria, before bending down and giving her a quick hug. “Thank you, I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” Stacy said before leaving the room at a near run.
Daria looked out the door and smiled. Stacy was going to be fine, she knew it, and tomorrow, she’d have to either console her or congratulate her. For now though, it was time to relax.
Walking downstairs Daria locked the door and paused a moment. When had she asked Stacy to talk to her afterwards? With a shrug Daria dismissed it, thinking ahead already to the nap she needed.
