The cafeteria was not as heavily populated as it had been at dinner. It seemed that many witches didn't consider eating breakfast to be very important. There were less than half as many students already in the cafeteria when Icy and Darcy walked in. While not as thick as it had been the night before the atmosphere of hatred and fear was still palpable as all eyes turned toward the white-haired witch and her companion. Darcy's eyes scanned the room apprehensively, being unused to such a chilly reception. She suppressed a shudder as she headed for the almost non-existent serving line.
"Brrrr! I hope THAT's not something I'm gonna have to get used to."
She glanced back at Icy.
"I dunno how you can stand being so notorious. It's creepy."
Icy just grinned at the enchantress as the pair went through the serving area selecting items for breakfast. “Hey, I want to make a name for myself. Can’t do that hiding in shadows.” The Ice Witch carefully scanned the student body present, looking for the Wrecking Crew in particular. She didn’t see them, but knew that meant nothing.
After they exited the line Icy led them to an empty table in a back corner. Darcy raised her eyebrow at that. Icy knew what the brown-haired girl was implying. “There’s being notorious and then there’s being stupid. I’m not leaving my back open.” *At least not until I’m sure nobody will try and take advantage of it.*
Darcy shrugged and sat down across the table from Icy, unconcerned that her back was exposed to the rest of the room. After all, she wasn't the one who had ticked off half the school before the first day of classes. She'd already smoothed things over with the Hellions for the time being so it wasn't as if there was anybody out there she currently had to watch out for. She picked up her fork and started in on her scrambled eggs.
"You wouldn't have to worry so much about leaving your back open if you didn't go out of your way to make everybody your enemy. Freezing half the school on your first day? Sure it's hardcore, I'll give you that, but it really isn't smart policy to go making so many new enemies all at once. Or how about what you did to Amanda this morning? You may have gotten one up on her for now but she's gonna come looking for payback eventually, and in case it escaped your attention, she kinda knows where you sleep, being our roommate and all."
“Well, to answer your second question first, yes, I overdid it with Amanda. But I need to know just how far I can push her and just how powerful she is. I see a lot of potential in her, if she can keep that temper of hers under control. And to answer your first question, I needed to know just how things stand here. I overturned the cauldron and saw what floated and what sank. Now that I know that I can move forward. I plan on running this place before break.”
Darcy shook her head at Icy's arrogance.
"Whacking the beehive with a stick may sound like a good way to prove who's boss, but it just winds up stirring up a swarm of angry bees."
Icy saw some commotion at the dining hall entrance. Wind, Boots, C.P. and Sandy had entered, and the other students were giving them a wide berth. As she predicted, the group known as the Wrecking Crew saw her and headed her way.
The white-haired girl sat and continued to sip her coffee, showing no emotion as the group started to separate to surround their table. As the group closed in Icy spoke up. “Ladies, please join us.”
Wind wasn’t sure what to make of this. She fully expected this arrogant freshman to attack them immediately.
Darcy was more startled at being flanked by the Wrecking Crew than by Icy's seemingly casual response to their arrival. She glanced to either side in mild surprise but no sign of fear yet. She emulated Icy's casual attitude about the encounter, though inside she was sweating it a bit. This situation was not of her own making nor under her control. This wasn't like her dealings with the Hellions. In that situation she'd provoked them only slightly and she had known she could count on Blazer not to provoke them any further. In this case however things were not so much under her control. Icy had provoked these girls quite severely, not once but twice, and didn't seem as though she'd hesitate to do it again. If Icy escalated this into an open fight Darcy didn't fancy her chances of coming out of it unscathed. If she was lucky she might have the time to perform a quick Shadow Transit back to her room, but that was a risky maneuver in a fight where a moment's inattention might get you decked. She locked her gaze on Icy, silently repeating the mantra "Don't whack the beehive! Don't whack the beehive!" over and over in her mind.
Icy watched as the Wrecking Crew took seats at their table. Wind and CP flanked Darcy while Sandy and Boots flanked the Ice Witch. Icy maintained her composure, showing once again that ice was not simply her magical specialty. “So glad you could join us,” the white-haired girl stated.
“Funny thing to say when you’re gonna be in pieces in just a minute,” Wind growled.
Icy took another sip of her coffee, then set the cup down. “Really Wind, such a poor bluff. With all the teacher’s eating you’re really going to pound us here and now?”
Wind was starting to get riled up so Icy quickly changed tack. “But that’s neither here nor there. Let’s get down to business. Let me ask you, are you happy being Number 2? Or more accurately, having to fight to remain tied at Number 2?”
Wind just continued to stare at Icy. The white-haired girl continued. “You really don’t have to answer. You want to be Number 1. And that’s where I and my associate here come in. You’ve seen a demonstration of my power. Do you really think I’d be stupid enough to take on all of you by myself? But I needed you to see firsthand my strengths, as I needed to see yours. Let us join you in taking out the Hellion’s once and for all.”
The laughter coming from the Wrecking Crew filled the dining hall, causing more than one freshman to bolt for the relative safety of anywhere else in Cloud Tower.
When it finally died down CP said, “We don’t need some uppity freshman making waves.”
“Really?” Icy countered. “Wind, how do you feel about my offer?”
Wind just sat in silence, obviously mulling over the idea.
While Wind paused to consider Icy's offer, Darcy held her hand out toward Icy.
"Hey wait just a minute Icy! Who said I wanted to join the Wrecking Crew?"
Icy just smiled at the enchantress. "Of course you do, dearie."
Darcy frowned at her.
"And just why is that?"
"You want to be on the winning side, don't you?"
That gave Darcy pause. She wasn't exactly sure she wanted to be on any side, but to say that in front of present company would sound like she was wimping out.
"Uh, well ..."
Icy turned to Wind. "She'll be quite the asset, believe me." Wind gave the white-haired witch a look that made it clear she didn't believe Icy, but said nothing.
Icy finally spoke. “So what do you think of my proposition?”
Wind scowled at the white-haired freshman. “I’ll think about it. Let’s go!” she growled at her gang.
The Wrecking Crew got up and left, grabbing some food on the way out. After they’d exited the cafeteria Boots spoke up. “Don’t tell me you bought any of that garbage, boss!”
Wind kept walking and never turned her head. “Don’t need to. If she’s being honest, we need her power to fix Dusty and the Hellions once and for all. If she’s trying to play us or isn’t as powerful as she appears, the Hellions will take care of her for us!”
CP chimed in. “I think she’s trying to play us for fools. I’ll bet she’s made the same offer to the Hellions and the Clique and who knows how many others.”
Wind stopped and mulled that over. She turned to CP. “Find out. If she’s trying to play us off against each other she won’t survive the week!”

As soon as Wind and the others were out of earshot Darcy opened up on Icy.
"What the hell was that? 'That's where I and my associate come in'? Okay, first it's 'my associate and I', and second why are you dragging me into this? Why would I wanna join the Wrecking Crew?"
"You know, Oi was just asking myself the very same thing."
Darcy winced at the sound of the annoying nasal voice coming from behind. She turned around in her chair to see Boomer standing right behind her. The blond girl had her arms folded and was looking down her nose at Darcy with a look of stony disapproval, or as near to one as she could apparently manage. Darcy gave her a nervous smile.
"H-hey Boomer! Fancy meeting you here! Where's your two friends?"
Boomer shrugged noncommittally.
"Eh, Dusty don' get up dis early and Tit doe'n' like ta hang out wit me when Dusty ain' around."
She leaned toward Darcy in what was evidently supposed to be a menacing fashion, though she overplayed it a bit and wound up looking like she had a case of stomach cramps.
"Now what's dis Oi hear about you joinin' da Crew? And 'o's yer friend dere?"
“Name’s Amanda,” the white-haired girl butted in before the enchantress could speak. “And as for joining the Wrecking Crew, just why would we want to join the Number 2 gang when being Number 1 is so much better? But I doubt you’d take freshmen. Wind certainly won’t. She was actually here threatening us.”
Boomer straightened up, giving Icy a puzzled stare. "Eh? That cozy little sit-down wuz her threatnin' youze? Yeah, roight."
Icy got a sad look in her eyes. “Wind said she’d make our lives at Cloud Tower pure hell. We need protection from her, and don’t know where to get it.” She pointed to the remains of her black eye, not completely healed by Twister. “She even gave me this.”
Boomer gave the white-haired witch a stupid-looking smirk. "Yeah, I kin believe that. That Wind's got real issues. Her gang can't beat us so she takes it out on all you poor dumb freshies."
“So my friend here and I befriended upper class students. I found a nice friend by the name of Twister, and Darcy here a very nice girl by the name of Blazer.”
Boomer pulled out a chair, turned it around backwards and sat down straddling it, facing the table. "Yeah now, ya see that's where Oi got a bit of a problem here."
She hooked one elbow around Darcy's neck in what almost could have passed for a friendly fashion and drew her in close. "See, woid has it that you're gettin' a moight too chummy with Miss Blazer. One moight almost say 'intamint'."
Darcy didn't know whether to laugh in Boomer's face or shove her off. Stupid people like Boomer could be amusing sometimes, which Darcy figured must be why Dusty kept her around, but threatening and stupid was just lame. Rather than do either though, she simply stared at her calmly.
"Yeah? So what if I am? I don't see how that's any business of yours."
Boomer tightened her arm around Darcy's neck, pointed a finger in her face and glared at her. "Listen you little tramp, that's my kid sister yer messin' wit dere."
Darcy gave the obnoxious blond a thoughtful look. "You don't say? And that makes it your business because...?"
Boomer grabbed Darcy's chin between her thumb and forefinger and forced her head back at a painful angle. "Lemme make this simple for ya toots. Ya mess wit Katie and you're messin' wit me, ya got it?"
Darcy did her best to give a sexy smirk with Boomer's thumb and forefinger dug into her cheeks. "Well, I didn't realize you two were into that sort of thing but I don't mind sharing if you don't."
With a strangled cry, Boomer let go with her arm and shoved Darcy hard with her other hand, throwing her onto the floor. "STAY AWAY FROM MY SISTER, YOU SICKO! Ya lay a hand on her and I'll put ya in traction! Ya got that?!"
Icy thought fast. Boomer could ruin everything, from blabbing to Dusty to hurting Darcy.
The Ice Witch quickly stood up and got between the wild-eyed Boomer and Darcy, who was lying on the floor. “Boomer, take it easy. Darcy can’t help being what she is. She seduces people like you and I cast spells. Besides, if this really is an issue for you, hadn’t you better take that up with Blazer?”
Boomer snarled at Icy. "Stay outta dis Mandy! Dis is family business. Ain't got nuttin' ta do wit youze."
Just then Zarathustra walked up, planting her hands on her hips. "Is there a problem here ladies?"
Boomer gave her a big friendly smile. "Nope. No problem. I was just givin' da tramp here a little friendly advice, for her own protection." She gestured toward Darcy where she lay on the floor. "Cloud Tower kin be a dangerous place for freshies ya know."
Zarathustra narrowed her eyes at Boomer suspiciously. "How very true. Do keep in mind though that we have strict rules against fighting in the cafeteria. Unless you would like to spend the next week cleaning out toilets in the dungeon."
Boomer shuddered. "No thanks Miss Z. Oi think Oi'll pass." She waved at Icy. "Later ladies!" She frowned warningly as she pointed at Darcy. "I'll be seeing you around."
As Boomer turned and walked away, Icy reached down to help Darcy to her feet. Darcy rubbed her cheeks and jaw where Boomer had pinched her. "Thanks for the save Icy. I owe you one."
“Had to keep that hulking baboon from ruining my carefully laid out plans. Besides, I still need your help with all this. Change your mind yet?”
Darcy shrugged noncommittally. "I'm still not so sure this is a good idea. Lemme think about it for a bit."
Zarathustra gave the two girls a warning look. "Whatever you two are planning I would advise against trifling with the Hellions. They've earned a reputation around this school for ruthlessness."
Zarathustra turned and started to walk away, then stopped and turned back around. “Oh, by the way, Icy; don’t forget you have KP duty tonight. I believe you’ll have some help from an Amanda Stormwind. Don’t be late.” Icy swore she heard a chuckle from the teacher as she walked away.
*You’ll pay for that, bitch!*, the Ice Witch promised herself.
Darcy raised an eyebrow and gave Icy a half-smile. "You and Miss Congeniality have cafeteria duty together? Oh, this oughta be fun."
“It doesn’t matter,” Icy said. “C’mon, let’s go!”
Icy and Darcy left the Dining Hall, forgetting the trouble thawing back in their room as they headed off to their separate classes.
