Chapter 7

The Lee Industries Gala, established to help the city’s social culture recover from the Year of Lee. It was an event that anyone could attend and allowed the social elite and the middle class to mingle in the same social circles for at least one night out of the year. It had done wonders for encouraging the rebuilding of the residential areas of the city, as well as contributed to the lowering of the unemployment rate and financial well-being of the city in general. Evidently getting to meet your employees outside of the workplace was a positive thing. However, despite the mixed crowd, the best in formal wear was expected (hence the sharp increase in the number of tuxedos rented just prior to the Gala), and it was generally preferred that you bring a date if you were not married, fairly typical considering the type of social event this was.
----------------------------
Shark tugged nervously at the lapel of his tuxedo, the fabric of the shoulders and sleeves straining as he did so. Thankfully they had found formal wear that fit him, abet not very well, although the colors did not go too well with his fur. Okay, the black and white of the tuxedo did, but not the red of bowtie or cummerbund. Not to mention that he was going to be here with Axel, dancing, in public. It shouldn’t really be a big deal, really, what did he care what others thought? His friends still accepted him and Axel for who they were and that was all that mattered.
“Nervous about being in such a public place?” Axel asked, placing a hand on his arm. Shark nodded in response, still fidgeting with his overcoat.
“Here, pick me up and I’ll adjust that for you.” Axel said helpfully. Figuring Axel would do a better job than himself; Shark followed Axel’s suggestion and picked the smaller man up, holding Axel away from himself as Axel adjusted his overcoat so it was even. After seeing Axel’s approving nod, Shark smiled and hugged Axel tightly for a second before setting him back down.
“It won’t be as bad as you think, Lee Industries has arranged for there to be an announcement concerning your condition during the introductions. Everyone will know the only reason you’re a minotaur is because of the treachery of Lee.”
“Yeah, but I wouldn’t give this new body up for my old one.”
“Your new physique has too many advantages?” Axel said in a teasing tone.
“Well, as soon as I can kick properly there won’t be any disadvantages… Well, except for the whole clothing issue.”
“Eh, that will work itself out with time as we figure out what we need to get you.” Axel said with a slight shrug as a round of applause could be heard coming from the banquet hall.
“Sounds like the introductions are starting won’t be too long before our team is up. How do I look?” Shark asked over the din of the applause.
“You look great, how about me?” Axel responded.
“Hold on…” Shark said as he reached down to adjust Axel’s bow tie. “It was a little crooked.” he said by way of explanation. Axel gave him a wave of thanks, paying more attention to what the announcer was saying right then. He had just introduced the Amanti family, so it would not be too long before the team was introduced.
“Sorry Shark, I was paying more attention to the announcer… we’re up soon.” Axel said as Shark adopted a fake hurt expression on his face, “Stop that, you’ll make me feel guilty.”
“Alright, alright, you’re just lucky that I feel like I’m going to burst out laughing holding this expression.” Shark said, his normal expression reappearing on his face. It really was odd to see Shark’s typical lazy (or at least relaxed) expression on his new face, Axel still had not gotten used to it, although he probably should have by now.
“And up next, I present the ATOM team.” the announcer’s voice drifted in from the stage as the team was escorted onto the stage, “Along with their recently mutated member Shark, who lost his human appearance stopping an insidious plot to mutate the entire city.”
After a very quiet second, one of the families in front started applauding, an action that was quickly taken up by the rest of the audience until it became a loud roar with a standing ovation by those attending the Gala. Shark relaxed, not realizing until that moment how tense he had been. The people here were applauding his sacrifice, although it was slightly exaggerated in this case. Well, at least they weren’t throwing anything at him; although he did see a few of the younger children in the crowd hide their faces. Well, he was a stranger and probably pretty scary to a younger child, he was okay with that. As the ovation died down, the team wandered off the stage toward their reserved table to wait through the other introductions. It was quite a long list this time; evidently the Gala was becoming popular among the international elite as well. Hopefully that wouldn’t affect the purpose of the Gala any, Landmark City needed this event to help with the rebuilding process. After what seemed like a small eternity, namely since they were hungry, menus were passed out so they could order. Truthfully, all of the meals had been prepared prior to the Gala by gourmet chefs and were now just being heated. Enough of each dish had been ordered so everyone could have one and the extras would be donated to feeding the many homeless still living in the city, as well as anyone who could not attend. Shark reviewed the menu, ignoring the joke one of the waiters made about having a nice plate of grass and rye, finally finding a nice chicken dinner. For some odd reason, it seemed wrong for him to eat anything involving steak or hamburger, likely since he was a bovine himself technically. Oh well, there was still chicken and fish as well as other white meats.
The dinner progressed without incident, much to Shark’s relief. No jokes about his appearance, although there were quite a few stares from people nearby, but they quickly looked away when he noticed them. Quiet conversation rippled through the room, most people discussing various topics ranging from housing recommendations to work to family matters to business practices to personal interests, the usual gamut of human interests. For his part, Hawk was a definite contrast to the rest of the room, sulking in his chair with a gloomy expression on his face. King and Lioness were discussing their wedding plans and Axel was telling Shark about the various moves of Jo-Lan martial arts while Hawk continued to glare at them. Shark felt a little sorry for the guy, at one point they had been close friends, but Hawk had grown more egotistical as time wore on and at some point, Shark had just found that he was unable to tolerate hanging around the pilot. That same ego still prevented him from holding down a steady date and Hawk clearly didn’t realize that was the problem. Of course, Shark really hadn’t noticed since he had grown closer to Axel around that time, at least not until the other day. Shark decided he was getting rather uncomfortable sitting next to Hawk and re-dedicated himself to quickly finishing his dinner, trying to ignore the glare from Hawk, even though it wasn’t really directed at him so much as everyone at the table. Had Hawk had feelings for him? Nah, Hawk was as straight as an arrow… probably.
“Hey, Axel… how about we go dance or something?” Shark whispered to Axel, still watching Hawk to see if there was any change in his expression.
“Isn’t it a little soon for that? They aren’t really playing anything other than dinner music right now.” Axel asked with a confused expression on his face.
“Yes, but I am getting very uncomfortable with Hawk glaring at everyone like that. I’d really like to do anything else right about now.”
“Okay, just let me tell Lioness and King what’s going on.”
“Alright.” Shark said before he wandered over to the drink table, asking the person tending the table for a glass of the punch as he did so. He took a quick sip of it, finding it not so bad, although it would be nicer if it had something carbonated added in as well. Within a few minutes, Axel, Lioness and King wandered over, each of them ordering their own preferred drinks from the attendant. The four of them stood there, watching the others talk about various topics, as they drank their preferred beverages.
“You know, Hawk is not taking life in a very positive manner recently.” Lioness said at last, breaking the relative silence.
“I think he’s just taking badly to the fact he doesn’t have a date.” King said in an explanatory tone.
“Oh, likely true.” Lioness said; taking another drink as the band started to play music more appropriate for dancing.
----------------------------
Spydah grinned quietly to himself as he watched the people inside the banquet hall mill about, many of them now occupied with dancing in the large cleared area in the middle of the room. This little party would be fun to break up, especially since he could see the ATOM team, minus Hawk, dancing on the dance floor. It would be enjoyable for him to ruin their fun, especially since by the end of the night, they would not be among the living any longer. It struck him as odd that he felt so blood-thirsty; normally he didn’t feel this way. Oh well, as long as he got to finish off those pesky meddlers, he didn’t care.
----------------------------
Shark was having a great time as he and Axel quietly moved to the tempo of the music, each holding the other tight. Yet, he couldn’t help but get the feeling that something bad was going to happen to ruin this moment. A few minutes later, his premonition turned out to be correct as a fireball blossomed near the windows, spraying the assembled dancers with broken glass. Smoke spread onto the room as a large form emerged from the hole in the windows, everyone in the room recognizing the figure at once.
“Greetings, sheep!” Spydah said as he grabbed the nearest person and threw them through another window. Behind him, several figures in black ops gear spread out into the room, firing into the crowd as the party-goers dove for cover, a few unlucky ones being hit in the arm or leg before they managed to get behind cover.
“They’re shooting to kill!” Axel shouted as he ran up to one of the agents, smashing the man back through the window with a kick to the chest before turning to the next target. Quickly following his lead, the other members of the ATOM raced into action, King slamming two of the other intruders together as Lioness kicked another up into the air, finishing him off by kicking him head-first into another operative. Shark decided to head for the leader of this attack, Spydah. Unfortunately, a couple of the intruders got between Shark and his objective, but they were easily taken care of with a swing of one of his arms. With a speed that was surprising considering his size, Shark grabbed two of Spydah’s mechanical arms and ripped them off of him. Spydah swung around in shock, trying to impale Shark with his remaining arms. Shark put his skill in evading to good use, managing to dodge all of the arms. Spydah grinned, making Shark wonder what in the world was wrong with the man. He found out a second later as poison spikes extended from the remaining mechanical arms that Spydah had.
“Not so tough now are you?” Spydah said, jabbing at Shark repeatedly. However, luck was on Shark’s side as Axel kicked another soldier into Spydah, kicking him off balance. Shark wasted no time with the distraction, diving in and ramming the ends of the two arms he had ripped off earlier though Spydah’s feet. Spydah screamed in pain in a fashion not too dissimilar from a little girl. After attempting to pull himself free by pulling his feet off the floor, Spydah, in rather anti-climatic fashion, feel over backwards and fainted. Looking around, Shark noticed that at some point Lee Industries Security had arrived and helped to mop up the remaining attackers.
“Well, they weren’t too difficult.” Axel said, stripping off the remains of his over coat and dress shirt to make a bandage for injuries on his arm and legs. Shark walked over to help, being careful not to tighten the wraps too much.
“You know, medical personnel should be here shortly, you didn’t really need to do that.” Shark added as he finished tying the bandage on Axel’s leg.
“I would not count on that quite yet Mister Shark.” a serious voice sounded from behind them. Shark looked up as Axel whirled around to face Agent Lena as she walked out from behind one of the pillars that framed the stage. With one smooth motion she sprayed a nearby security guard in the face with a fine bluish mist. Within a second the man was sprawled out on the floor, his breathing slow but regular.
“It was necessary to prevent anyone from responding to this event, so our operatives have knocked out everyone in the building for the time being. We have much to discuss and your team has secured an important resource here… Speaking of which, where is the fifth member of your team?”
“Huh?” Shark asked.
“What was his name? Ah, yes, Hawk. It would appear he is missing.” Lena said simply as the rest of the team quickly looked around the room.
“Where did he go?” Axel asked as the ATOM team returned their attention back to the government agent.
“I do not usually make it my business to track the every movement of an adolescent minded adult.” she replied impassively.
“Look, you know more than you’re telling and we are tired of people hiding all this crap from us. It happened before with Lee, so I’m sure you can understand why we are not too appreciative of your ‘efforts’ right now.” Lioness shouted as she stormed over to the agent, jabbing a finger in her face. Lena paused, as if considering her options, before she spoke again.
“Very well… Hawk left approximately twenty minutes ago, for what reasons, I do not know or care.”
“Thank you, why bother with the secrecy though?”
“That really is none of your business, and I am not going to make another concession to your curiosity or your demands. Although, I am willing to inform you that Hawk will not be joining you on your mission, we have other uses for him.” Lena said simply before walking off, cutting off any other attempts at questions from the ATOM team.
----------------------------
Agent Lena strode into the car waiting for her outside, shutting the door behind her before the driver took off. She glanced over at the shadowed figure, nodding in response to his unspoken question.
“Excellent work in there Agent Lena, the plan is preceding perfectly.” the figure stated after consulting a small hand held device.
“What about Hawk though sir?”
“He is not reliable enough for me to consider sending him on this mission. Worry not though; I have another mission for him to go on. We need to destroy the secondary facility as well and Hawk will fit the bill perfectly. As it turns out, that is where Samantha is being held, right under Paine’s nose, although in a hidden portion of the base.”
“I see, give him the chance to rescue the damsel in distress as well as enlist the aid of Paine?”
“No, Paine will not be there, but we need to rescue Samantha before Lee mutates her. If that happens, then the ATOM team will not stand a chance.”
“How do we know he has not mutated her already?”
“Believe me, I would know…” the figure said as he leaned forward into the light, “After all, remember, I am Mr. Lee. True, we share the same body, but I must oppose Dark Lee’s plan before he succeeds. Granted, I will not survive, but that is the price I must pay for my hubris. In my absence, you must ensure that the ATOM team succeeds. Now quickly, we must get to the airport, driver, it will not be long before Dark Lee takes command again.”
