Chapter 7

Bettie strode over, looking like an angry bull and grabbing Lill tightly by the wrist.
“Lill get your clothes on I’m getting you away from this place.”
“Mum?” Lill replied. She twisted against Bettie’s grip; she was hurting her. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m sorry Lill.” Kimi yelled from the background. “She forced me.”

Lill knew how persuasive her mother could be when she thought her children might be in danger. Bettie glared at Kimi and the poor girl backed down.
“I’m taking you away from this…this sick place and these perverts.”
“Perverts?” Zoot yelled. “Now wait just a minute…” Bettie glared at him.
“Back off weirdo. Before I use you for a field goal.”
“MUM.” Lill yelled, bringing her attention back to her daughter. “Please, let me explain.”
“I don’t know what they did or said to you Lill. But it’s over now. I’ll take you away from all these perverts and everything will be alright.” She pulled her daughter close and added in a hushed voice. “Whatever they’ve done to you it’s. It’ll be alright.”
“Mum no-one has done anything to me.” Lill yelled back angrily. “I Came here because I wanted to. Because…” She hesitated, but knew that the time had come; she had put it off for far too long. “I’m a nudist. And here is a place where I can be myself.”

Bettie didn’t seem to hear her.
“I didn’t raise a deviant. You’re coming home now, I’m getting you away from all of these freaks. You shouldn’t be anywhere near these pervs and paedo’s.” She began to glare at the resort residents but Lill grabbed her attention again.
“I hate you.” She said in a deep hatred and anger that matched Bette’s own tone. Bettie’s anger dissolved as soon as the words came out of her mouth and all that was left was a cold pain in her chest like a knife stabbing at her heart.
“What?”
“This is why I didn’t tell you. I knew you would never understand. You have this narrow view of the world and think that only you can be right and everyone else wrong. If you think these people are perverts then you’re calling me a pervert because I’m just like them.”

Bettie shook her head furiously.
“Lill no. You’re not like them. You’re just confused. Just put your clothes on and I’ll take you home and we can get back to normal.” She sounded hurt, as if Lill really had stabbed her.
“There not perverts mum. And I’m not confused. THIS IS WHAT I AM.” She wrenched her arm free of Bettie’s grip, her anger giving her a burst of strength that Bettie was unprepared for. “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. YOU DON’T WANT TO UNDERSTAND. YOU JUST DON’T CARE.”

Lill turned and raced off away from her mother. She didn’t want Bettie to see her cry.
“LILL.” Bettie shouted after her but the girl didn’t hesitate. She leapt over the short fence and raced off into the resort. Nick broke away from the spectators and hurried after her. Kimi looked at the angry Bettie and glanced at her father. She didn’t hesitate a second longer and ran off following the naked boy who was racing off to find Lill.

Bettie watched her daughter leave feeling ice in her chest. Lill had sounded so hateful and full of venom. She had never heard such a voice from either of her kids in their lives. Everyone stood around feeling very awkward. Chaz stepped forward and rested a hand on her shoulder.
“I think everyone just needs some time to calm down.” He silently guided her into the games room, fully aware of how everyone was staring at them.

Nick was aware that a girl was following him just as he was following Lill but he didn’t want to slow down in case he lost Lill. She was sobbing loudly, he could hear her from as far back as he was. She was racing back to the beach, back to her tent. A small private place where she could be alone.

The girl that had been following him was no at his side, she was faster than she looked. She looked about Lill’s age and was of Asian parentage.
“Kimi.” She said between gasps.
“Nick.” He replied.

They ran onto the beach and saw Lill dive into her tent. They quickly caught up and had to kneel on the sand for several minutes to catch their breaths before they could make a move. Lill was huddled inside the tent, hiding under her sleeping bag, spread out like a blanket, and wishing that her two friends would just go away and leave her alone.
“Lill?” Kimi was the first one to speak.
“Go away.” A muffled voice called out from under the sleepig bag.

Kimi and Nick looked at each other uneasily, they didn’t know what to do.
“I’m sorry.” Kimi called softly. “Your mum forced it out of me.” She hesited and leaned into the tent, resting a hand where she assumed Lill’s shoulder was under the blanket.

Bettie sat in a chair in the games room, her head was in her hands. She was the sort of woman who cried but she was close this time. Chaz rested a hand nervously on her shoulder. He didn’t know what to do; Bettie had dragged both he and his daughter all this way for no other reason than her own impulsive anger and yet he felt sympathy for her.

A woman with aubern hair came over and placed a fresh cup of coffee onto the table in front of Bettie. Without even being asked she sat down.
“How are you?” She didn’t await for a reply. “A stupid question I suppose.”

Bettie didn’t reply and took the coffee mug. It smelled strong and fresh, an expensive brand. She looked at the naked woman, she must have been a few years younger than Bettie was. She looked young and caring, certainly not the image of nudists she had held in her mind for so long.
“Thank you miss…?”
“It's Mrs and it's Doctor actually.” She din’t know what made her reveal her medical background, just something in her make it slip out. “Dr. Aletti. My friends call me Geena.”

Bettie looked slightly taken aback; it was a lot to get from a simple hello. A doctor, a respected member of the community, was a nudist. This wasn’t the image of nudists she had either. She’d thought of seedy perves who lived in shabby apartments and looked at porn all the time and probably kiddie porn at that. People who only came to gawk at other naked people. If she had been wrong about that, what else was she wrong about?
“I’m sorry for making such a scene.” She said quietly. It wasn’t often Bettie apoogised, but she felt she had to on this one.
“It’s understandable.” Geena said reassuringly. “It can’t be easy to find out your daughter is a nudist.”

Bettie felt a flash of anger, she didn’t want to talk about this to a perfect stranger. Instead she sighed and nodded.
“I thought I had nudists all figured out. I was expecting creeps, perverts…orgies.”
Geena smiled and nodded, albeit a little guardedly. “If it was like that I wouldn’t be here. Nor would I let my kids within fifty miles of this place.”

Bettie looked at Geena in understanding.
“It’s just not what I expected. That’s all.” Bettie said as she took a sip of the coffee. It was good stuff. She was sitting here having her entire attitude altered during the space of the last hour and this conversation.
“This is a place where people can just be themselves. People of all shapes and sizes can stay without fear of judgement about the way they look. I know the sort of person you had in mind but official resorts like this always are mindful and make sure that those kind of people never make it in here. Those people are not true naturists.”
“I see that now.” Bettie interrupted. “I can see that my daughter wasn’t in any danger. Here she could be among people who shared her interest and understand her in a way that I, at the time, clouldn’t.”
“Mom?”

Bettie tuned at the voice and stared at the doorway. Lill was standing in between Kimi and Nick. Kimi and herclothing looked ironically unusual next to the two naked people. Lill had red marks under her eyes, she had been crying. Bettie jumped from her chair and hurried over to her daughter.
“Lill. I’m sorry.”

Lill smiled and held out her arms as Bettie approaced. The two relatives hugged tightly, Lill smiling wide as her face was pressed into her mothers breasts.
“I know why you didn’t tell me.” Bettie said understanding. Lill pulled out of her dark embrace and looked up at Bettie.
“I didn’t think you would understand.”

Bettie looked behind her to Geena and back to Lill.
“I wouldn’t have. But I should have. I should have had more faith in you. You’re a smart girl Lill and I should know that you wouldn’t get yourself involved with anything…unhealthy.”

Lill hugged her mum again, tighter than before. A new love and understanding being forged between them. Slowly but surely Lill loosened her grip and looked up to her mother with large eyes, they were happy, full of tears of joy but there was soemthing in the corner, a little sadness creeping in.
“I suppose it’s time to go home now.” She said hesitently. Bettie looked at her daughter then around the room. Everyone was hanging back, giving the siblings the time and space they needed to make their peace.
“I suppose.” Bettie said ernestly. Lill’s face began to drop. “But there are a few weeks of summer vacation left…if you want to stay a little longer.”

Now Lill burst into tears, it was as if her greatest dream was coming true and the reality was turning out even better than the fantasy.
“We have several cabins available and accept all major credit cards.” Zoot called from the back of the room.

Bettie looked at Lill; she was just a young, naked girl who'd barely entered puberty and yet she was more mature than Bettie had even realised; her little Lill was growing up fast. Bettie laughed heartily and wrapped her large arm around Lill's shoudler and turned to face Zoot.
“Check us in.”
