Chapter 7: Tak, Queen of Denial
As dawn broke outside Tak’s base, Zim pulled one of the panels off of the AI Brain console, inspecting the damage inside. Whatever Dib had done had worked…the data inside was fried. Physically, the conduits were still intact, but everything in the entire base’s system would need to be erased and then reprogrammed. And that was going to take a week, maybe more. He sighed, removing another panel and examining the conduits there.
Tak walked in holding Nara’s head under one arm, looking over at Zim. “I left one of Nara’s circuit diagrams in here last night…have you seen it?”
Zim held out the rolled-up paper, using the jets in his pak to cross the wide gap between the AI Brain console pad and the ledge Tak was standing on. Landing on his spider-legs, he walked over to her on them and handed her the paper.
“Thanks.” She smiled, relieved. She watched as Zim returned to the AI Brain Console pad, then shook her head and left. At the end of the day she would check on his activities, just to make sure that he was helping rather than being destructive.

Late in the evening, Tak went down to Zim’s cell, frowning when she saw that he wasn’t in there. She searched the base, eventually finding him in the AI Brain Console chamber, examining one of the data conduits, still supporting his weight on his spider-legs. “Aren’t you going to retire for the evening?”
Zim jumped in surprise at the sound of her voice, blinking at her. “Evening?”
Tak nodded. “Yes. It’s eleven thirty in human time.”
Zim’s eyes widened. “It is??” He shook his head in amazement. “I lost track of time. Yes, I’ll definitely be retiring for the evening, then.” He sighed, closing the console and stretching.
“You’ve been working this whole time?”
Zim nodded and ran a hand over his antennae. “Yes…there’s so much work to do…whatever the Dib-stink did corrupted all of the data in the base’s system, which means that we’re going to have to erase and reprogram the entire base. But at least this time we can do it in a manner that will be harder for him to decode. And we can program an alarm into the system that will alert us to any tampering.” He stopped, then cleared his throat, looking away. “That will alert you to any tampering.” He laughed bitterly. “I forgot that I won’t be here.”
Tak nodded absently, then frowned a little. “Why are you working so hard to help me?”
Zim shrugged. “It’s better than sitting in a cell doing nothing.”
She considered this, then nodded. “I suppose. Have you eaten?”
Zim shook his head. “Your base, not mine.”
Tak nodded, then gestured towards the door. “Come and eat, then.”
*********
As Zim lay back on his bed and sipped at an Irken soda, he scanned over the schematics for the data conduits.
Tak approached Zim’s cell and watched him from the doorway, since her surveillance systems were part of the base and were not functioning. She was absolutely baffled by how dedicated Zim was being. Was he truly that bored, or was there some other reason?
Zim sighed and set the schematics aside, catching sight of Tak standing in the doorway and blinking at her. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Tak murmured, stepping into his room. “I thought you were going to retire.”
Zim nodded. “I am, yes.”
Tak contemplated him. “Then why are you still working?”
Zim gazed at her for a long moment, then sighed. “The faster we repair this base and get the security systems up and running, the sooner we’ll be protected from the Dib-beast. And I would sleep better knowing that you and I are safe from his…machinations.”
Tak blinked at him. So that was why. “I should have Nara operational again by tomorrow night.”
He nodded absently. “I suppose that will help a little.” Zim set the empty poop can aside, tugging the sheets up over his naked body, then sighing. “I don’t suppose there’s any possible way you would be able to find some clothing for me? Even if it’s only a pair of pants…”
She snorted. “You’re a prisoner, not a guest, Zim.”
Zim smirked at her, narrowing one eye. “Well, if you would prefer to have me walking around your base completely naked, that suits me quite well. I can’t say that I blame you.” He snickered.
Tak rolled her eyes. “Arrogant male.”
Zim grinned wider, baring his teeth. “Queen of denial.”
She blinked at him, frowning. “What?”
Zim chuckled. “It’s a human expression. It means that you fight to keep convincing yourself of something that isn’t true.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?”
Zim smirked. “Your body desires my touch, and yet you deny yourself the pleasure. You refuse to accept the fact that I can give you what you crave, and ultimately, the release that will satisfy you.”
Tak’s eyes narrowed hatefully. “You really are arrogant.”
Zim shrugged. “Again, you deny. Call me what you will, but that doesn’t change the fact that for the next few weeks, I am all you have.”
She scowled darkly at him, hissing and then turning, striding angrily out of his cell.
Zim watched her leave, then chuckled and shook his head. Stubborn female.

Well, thank you to those who reviewed, I'm happy to have the feedback.
To Yhu: aww, thanks for reviewing, it means so much to me. *lurve and hugs* I'm totally loving your Harry Potter crossover fic. *grins* And writing a Tak/Zim fic is really difficult. It's a demanding task to keep them both in character.
To Krimzon: Thank you *lurve* I appreciate the compliments and the review. I'm glad I'm getting feedback on this story, it helps. As for Tak/Zim "love" I'm not too sure when that'll come in. Tak/Zim smex...heh...that's another story. *devious grin*
To littleshipper: Oh, thank goodness, I'm glad I could convert someone! I'm guessing a lot of people won't give this story a chance because it's het, which makes me sad. Good writing should be read regardless, but then again, everyone's got different tastes. AAAAANYWAYS...as I mentioned in comments before, keeping Tak and Zim in character is a lot harder than I expected it to be, Tak especially. Perhaps that's why this story is taking me so long to develop. *shrugs*
To Jake: I've never heard that song, it's just a saying I've grown up with. I'm glad that you're one of the yaoi lovers that will actually give het a CHANCE. *grumbles* Anyways, enough of my bitching. Glad you liked your dedicatey-chapter-thing in Vindication! *LURVE*
To Tamago: *dances creepy-like too* Thanks for reviewing! It makes me do happy smiley dance of doom!
