Chapter Five: The Spirit of Life
Whispers could be heard all throughout the spirit world. The war raging on with the Fire Nation ruling with an iron fist and no avatar to stop the events. Avatar Roku stood and looked down at his reflection, thinking. He knew the war was his fault, and there was nothing he could do stop it. He turned and saw a figure standing gazing at him.
“You startled me.”
The figure bowed before the once Avatar.
“I’m sorry.” She walked towards Roku.
The figure stood next to Roku and look into the water with him.
“If anyone is to be blamed for what is going on, I am.”
The figure said nothing only to raise her hand and pull her hood off, letting her blonde hair flow down her back.
“There has been whispers, of what you have decided to do Lynn.”
She turned from the Avatar.
“The spirits of this world talks of doing something, but they will do nothing.”
“They will.” He tried to reassure the spirit that appeared to be young, but was far from it.
“No spirit of this world will do what needs to be done.” She turned and faced Roku. “I am the only spirit that stands a chance.”
“But you’re the spirit of life, Lynn.”
She nodded her head. “I am well aware what could happen if I die.”
Roku knew she had her mind set on what she had planned as she is the spirit of life and this war has taken many lives. He just wasn’t for sure what her plan detailed. “What is your plan on how to do this?”
“I’m going to allow myself to be born into the physical world as a baby into the Northern Water Tribe, so Tui and La can keep an eye on me. Once I am born into the physical world, I will have no memories of the spirit world, but as I grow I will learn to bend water one of my natural elements and I know that I will eventually discover my ability to bend other elements by accident.”
“What if the Avatar returns after you have crossed into the physical world?”
“Then the avatar must never learn that there is another, who can bend the other elements like him. It was originally his destiny to end this war once it started, and he must be the one to end it. If he was to fail however once and if he returns, we can all only hope I will do what needs to be done.”
Avatar Roku walked up to the spirit and embraced Lynn in a hug.
“We will all keep an eye on you.”
She broke the hug and smiled at Roku. She began to walk away, slowly fading into the fog.
He knew Lynn would do what she could, even in physical form with no memories. She was the oldest of spirits and possibly the first spirit and had wisdom beyond any of them, so she knew what she was doing and the consequences of what would happen is she failed.
Roku sighed “If only I could return back into the physical world.”
--
A woman walked through the snowy tundra, looking for a rare herb that grew during the winter months. She turned as she saw a baby laying in the snow, crying and calling for its mother. She picked the baby up, quickly wrapping it in her jacket looking around to see if anyone was near. She looked down at the baby who opened her sparkling blue eyes.
She continued to look around and saw the herb next to where she found the baby. She carefully reached down to pick it and quickly headed back to the tribe.
--
Yugoda looked at the baby in her arms.
“I will take her and raise her as my own.” She looked to the healer that found her in the snow, but back down at the baby. “She may even make an excellent healer.” She smiled as she played with the baby.
“What are you going to name her?”
Yugoda thought for a moment. “Lynn.” The baby giggle at her name. “Yes, Lynn seems to be a name that suits her.”
--
Lynn walked out of the healing huts and gazed up at the moon. She was exhausted from the lessons that Yugoda had been teaching her. She was the only girl in the northern water tribe to be as advance as she was at healing, but it wasn’t enough. She wanted to learn how to bend water, but it was a forbidden for the women to practice, although it didn’t stop her from studying the men who practiced and sometimes at night she would attempt to try what she observed. She walked towards the palace where there was a ceremony being held for Princess Yue’s 12th birthday and decided she would attend as well.
She reached the ceremony where there was many fires lit and the water benders were performing. Lynn sat down next to the cozy fire and watched the benders perform. The fire kept catching her eye and soon it had her mesmerized instead of the performance. She took her gloves off and reached out to the fire and the fire jumped into her hands. She gasped quickly moving her hands to hide what happened but sent the fire out in a blast. Everyone gasped, and chaos started to erupt.
Lynn quickly got up and began to run as hard and as fast as she could but was stop dead in her tracks as the water benders quickly pinned her down in ice.
“What is a fire bender doing here, and no less at my daughter’s birthday?” Chief Arnook approached her along with Master Pakku.
“I’m not a fire bender, I am a healer.” Lynn gulped.
“Then what was that display of fire bending at the ceremony? Did the spirits do it?” Pakku got even closer to her.
“I don’t know Master.” Lynn began to cry. “Please forgive me.”
“Tell us, why you are here. You certainly can’t be here alone.” Pakku questioned her.
Lynn remained silent. She wasn’t for sure if she should tell them she has been staying with Yugoda since she was a baby and was found in the snow.
“Tell us now!” Pakku commanded the icy prison to squeeze Lynn.
“If you continue to refuse to speak, I will dump you into the icy cold waters of the ocean.”
Chief Arnook came closer to Lynn. “You are no longer welcome here in the Northern Water Tribe, and will be dealt with if you ever return.” He then turned and looked at Master Pakku and nodded. Pakku motioned for the guards to walk over to Lynn as he let the ice drop down.
“Escort her out of here.” Master Pakku commanded them and began to walk back with Chief Arnook.
The guards grabbed her and began to walk pulling her with them. They soon reached the icy wall and Lynn was crying uncontrollably, begging them to let her go. They only laughed at her and they both pushed her over the wall throwing her into the water.
Lynn screamed as she hit the water. It felt as if a thousand knifes struck her all at once.
The guards only smiled and walked away in their accomplishment.
Lynn attempted to swim up to the surface for air but was struggling with all of the clothing she wore. She knew she had to get out of the water as soon as possible or hyperthermia would set it. She broke the surface and looked around and saw a piece of floating ice. She was exhausted from swimming, since her clothes tried to weigh her down as she fought her way to the top and decided to try to bend the block to her. She moved her hands, and surprisingly the block of ice slowly moved towards her. She climbing on top and shakily bent the water out of her clothes and huddle attempting to get blood flow back to her hands and feet.
--
Avatar Roku floated above the water and watched Lynn began to float to the bottom in exhaustion. He reached down and grabbed her pulling her up to the surface.
“You don’t have much further to go.”
He summoned a wave and placed her in the water as the wave carried her to the distance shore line.
--
Lynn woke up in a hut, and looked around and quickly rose to her feet and almost passed out.
A man entered the hut.
“Hey now!” He motioned for her to sit back down on the bed. “You better be taking it easy!”
“Where am I?” Lynn questioned as she placed her hand to her head. She remembered that she was struggling in the ocean, trying to bend the water to carry her so she didn’t have to swim so much.
“Your in the Earth Kingdom now. I found you on the beach, where the water washed you up. I suspect that you’re a water tribe girl from your robes, and brought you here to take care of ya.”
The girl nodded at the man. “Thank you for saving me and I am of water tribe origin as you suspected.”
“Figured. You seem to be quite away from home. You traveling?”
Lynn nodded and stood. The man stood up with her. “You should lay back down and rest.”
“I’m fine.” Lynn smiled. “I am a healer after all.” She reached out for the bucket of water and bent the water to her hands placing them on her temples. She let the water fall as she gathered she is in good health, only she needs to eat.
“Is there any shops around?” Lynn questioned. The man nodded.
Lynn reached into her pockets to see if she still had any water tribe money. She pulled it out. “Does anyone around here take water tribe money?” The man nodded in agreement.
Lynn bowed and thank the man again for saving her. She exited the hut and began to walk towards the little town she saw near the ocean. She saw fire nation flags hanging about, and thought she should lay low since she had water tribe robes on.
She brought some bread and fruit from a vendor. She kept her back turned as the fire nation soldiers walked past her. She sat down and began to ponder of what she should do next.
She listened to the soldiers that past her.
“Yeah, Captain Zhao is going back to the library in the desert to destroy it. Apparently he found it when he was a Lieutenant, and told of the secrets it held to the Fire Lord who then order him to return and burn everything.”
Lynn’s eyes widen, as they continued to walk past her. She had to get to the library before they did. It might hold an answer to how she bent fire. She quickly got up and ran and brought 3 water skins, fashioned after the water tribe and ran to the nearest stable and offered the rest of her money to buy an ostrich horse. The man first relented but took her offer and also gave her a map after he learned of where she was going.
--
A week pasted and she continued to ride through the heat. She had been using the water sparingly and whenever she could, would try to gather water, but her water bending abilities where lacking still. She reached for the skin attached to her side and brought it up to her mouth to drink some of the water. She then stopped the horse and poured the rest into it’s mouth. She got back up and continued to ride. The heat was unbearable, and something she was not use to. She opened her map and then looked around as the ostrich horse continued to walk onward. She wiped her forward of the sweat and passed out on the horse’s back.
--
She woke as she felt the full moon rising into the night sky. She looked and saw a tower rising from the sand with a rope hanging from the window. She got of the horse and started climbing the rope to enter the tower. She hoped it was the library but she knew if it was, that the fire nation had already been there. She finally reached the window and began to slowly let herself drop down the rope. She landed only to be greeted by a giant owl.
She looked at him slight nervous before him. The owl looked at the young water tribe girl, he knew who she was.
“I am Wan Shi Tong, he who knows ten thousand things.”
Lynn then bowed before the owl. “I have come seeking knowledge, and to warn you of a fire nation attack if they haven’t been here already.”
The owl looked up and back down at Lynn. “They came here several days ago.”
Lynn frowned.
“What is it that you seek?”
“I have come to see if there is an answer of to why I am a healer from the water tribe but I can bend fire.”
“I don’t believe you will find your answer young bender in my library, but you may browse at your leisure.”
“Would you happen to have any scrolls on any of the bending disciplines?”
The owl pointed in the direction behind Lynn.
She then bowed and thanked him. She came to the shelf that harbored many scrolls of all bending disciplines. She even came across a scroll that mentioned “spirit bending.” She went through scroll after scroll studying and absorbing the knowledge. A fox even brought her a satchel. She began placing the scrolls she found important into the bag, but mainly filled it with water and fire bending scrolls. She wasn’t even for sure if she could bend the other two elements.
She walked over to the rope and saw Wan Shi Tong standing next to it.
“I was hoping I could take some scrolls with me for my travels?”
The owl nodded at her and she began climbing up the robe to exit the library.
Author’s note: that is the end of this chapter I hope it gave you a lot more insight to Lynn and her origin. She is not the avatar, and yes she can bend all four disciplines but Fire and Water is her main as those are the two element of life. Fire gives life as in the sun, and water gives life in healing(but she will always be a stronger water bender). This also explains her banishment, and how she came across so many scrolls in earlier chapters when she is on Zuko’s ship. Keep in mind Lynn will NEVER become a master of air and earth. She will be a fairly good bender in earth, but all she knows of air is what she will learn from scrolls. This chapter also should explain why her healing abilities far surpass anyone’s. This should also hopefully hint at her weakness. She highly value’s life, which is why she crossed into the physical world to stop the war. Also Lynn was 10 when she was banished from the northern water tribe and in present day she is 14 the same age as Katara. I really hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and got a lot more insight to Lynn
