Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Hours later Eve walks into her offices, noticing her door open and Fox sitting on her desk. She smiles as she walks in, happy to be back to work for a change. “First day back and you’re already here as if I’m late?” “I’m not the one walking in here with a very satisfied grin and stiffness to the legs.” Fox smiles back, crossing her arms over her chest. Eve blushes as she settles down in her chair. “Um, yeah. I kind of had a wakeup call this morning.” Fox slides off the desk and into a nearby chair. “I noticed Owen was pretty chipper this morning. He was nearly humming to himself.” “I would like to see that.” Eve grins. “I can’t imagine him ever humming a tune.” A soft knock at the door interrupts them. Eve lifts a brow, surprised to see one of her former coworkers standing there with a stack of papers. “Lisa Miller! When did you get out of Environmental?” “Soon after you.” Lisa grins back. “I took your advice and went back to school.” “So what are you doing now?” Eve leans her arms on the desk, excited to see Lisa. “Actually I’m here to see you.” Lisa steps in, setting the papers down on the desk. “Mr. Burnett asked me to deliver these to you and help if necessary. He said he needed a new set of eyes on this.” Fox picks up a paper, looking it over. “Looks like the ones David wanted him to confirm.” “Yeah, he says he didn’t authorize these.” Eve flips through the pages, looking at each signature. “Parts of the letters look familiar though.” She glances up at Lisa. “Do you still do some hacking on the side?” Lisa glances at Fox, afraid to answer. “Gaming, yes. Anything else I haven’t. Why?” “She’s a hacker?” Fox eyes her with interest. Eve smiles warmly at Lisa. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to ask you to hack our system, although I’m sure you could in a heartbeat.” “Probably.” Lisa shrugs. “The security system is pretty lax.” “I want you to write me a program. One that will scan these documents and go through what we have on file. Find the signatures that provide matches.” She pushes the papers over towards the scanner. “I’ll need higher clearance for that.” Lisa glances at Fox, still nervous. “And a quiet place with a computer to work.” Fox leans back in her chair, contemplating the woman before her. “How long will it take you?” “Not long.” Lisa shrugs. “Maybe an hour.” “Use Eve’s computer. It has the clearance.” Fox nods towards Eve. “Plus she can authorize anything you will need.” Fox stands, walking towards the door. “When you’re done, come talk to me. We could always use someone with your talents in research and development.” Lisa watches Fox walk out, her body still with shock. She finally turns back to Eve, leaning against the desk. “Is she serious?” “Absolutely.” Eve pushes her chair away, vacating it and waving Lisa over to sit in it. “Shall we begin?”
Owen walks into Eve’s offices and immediately hears her voice singing Wide Awake by Katy Perry. A smile tugs at his lips as he approaches Miss Nolan’s desk. She looks up, smiling warmly at him and nodding towards the bag of food in his hand.
“Bringing Eve lunch, Mr. Burnett?” “Of course. I am sure she forgot to eat.” His eyes drift to Eve’s door. “How long has she been singing?” “Several hours now.” Miss Nolan glances at the door as well. “I’m not sure what her and Miss Miller are working on but they are completely absorbed.” “Thank you, Miss Nolan.” He walks closer to the door as Eve begins to sing Stay by Rihanna. He notices her sitting in a chair close by the door, eyes closed as she sings. When she gets to the part where the man sings, he steps quietly inside and begins to sing softly to her. It’s not much of a life you’re living It’s not just something you take, it’s given Round and around and around and around we go Oohh Now tell me now, tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know Not really sure how to feel about it something in the way you move Makes me feel like I can’t live without you and it takes me all the way I want you to stay Shocked, Eve’s eyes fly open and latch onto him. Her voice joins his until the song is done. His lips twitch up, watching her slowly rise from the chair as if she’s under his spell. A soft cough breaks it and Eve blushes as she looks towards Miss Miller. “Um, wow.” Lisa eyes Owen in disbelief. “I didn’t know you could sing like that too. I’m used to Eve but that was unreal.” “There is much you do not know about me, Miss Miller.” He steps to the desk and begins to pull food out of the bag. “Have you figured anything out yet?” “Of course we did.” Lisa grins and turns the screen towards him. “You have not one but two forgers and I’ve narrowed it down to 5 people already. I’m pulling more files by those people as we speak to compare handwriting styles with. Should be done in the next hour.” Eve grabs a few fries and nibbles on them. “I had to get several clearances done and have her write a whole new program before we could get this far.” “Is there anything more you need that I can assist you with?” His hopes of having a quiet but short lunch with her blown out of the water, he gently touches her hand. “Not unless you want to sit here watching Lisa work her mojo on the computer.” Eve leans her hip against the desk. “But I am glad you brought lunch. I didn’t know I was starving until I smelled it.” Lisa smiles and looks away as Owen takes Eve’s hand and gently kisses it. “Yeah and we should be done and have everything sent to you before the end of the work day.” “Then I will leave you to it.” Owen reluctantly lets go of Eve’s hand. “We are expected to dine with Mr. Xanatos this evening. He will expect you by 6pm sharp.” “Ok.” She bites her lip nervously. “Can you come by and remind me before then?” “Of course.” He nods to her and turns back towards the door. “I will see you later this evening.” Lisa waits until he is out of earshot before snickering. “So is it true you and Mr. Burnett just spent the last two weeks together?” Eve smiles and grabs a sandwich from the bag. “I cannot divulge any information about my whereabouts for the past few weeks until after the investigation into DeSoto is over.” “Yep. You were with him.” Lisa grins and turns back to her computer screen. “No one but you would talk exactly like he would unless you had been around him long enough to learn it.” “Whatever!” Eve grins back as she throws a fry at the other woman. Eve puts the last of her papers away, turning the computer off as she gets up from her desk. Miss Nolan pokes her head in the door, smiling as Eve closes her eyes and sighs. “Long day, Eve?” “Of course.” Eve smiles back, walking towards the door. “But it’s done. Thank god!” Miss Nolan chuckles. “That’s why I’m glad you are back. I wouldn’t want your job even if you paid me twice what you make!” She walks with Eve towards the elevators. “So what are you doing this evening?” “Dinner with the Xanatos family.” Eve grins and hits the button on the elevator. “I’m sure Xander has missed me drilling lessons into his head.” “If you have the time and feel up to it, several of us girls are heading to McNally’s bar and grill tonight.” She walks towards the stairs. “We’d love for you to come.” “Thanks, Allanna. I might if I have the time.” Eve waves as she steps into the elevator. The door closes before she can hear a reply and Eve thinks over her friend’s invitation. She doesn’t notice the elevator moving so when the doors open again, she is nearly surprised to find herself already on her floor. Alexander looks up, grinning at Eve as she steps off the elevator. “There you are! Why didn’t you come by to see me last night when you got home?” She takes his arm and heads him towards the family dining room. “I can’t try to see everybody in one day. There’s not enough hours in the day.” “You just wanted more time with Uncle Owen.” He leans his head against her shoulder, batting his eyes at her. “Heaven forbid I cut into your Owen time. I’m not cute enough.” She grins down at him. “You’re cute enough just not old enough.” He playfully grabs at his chest. “Woman! You wound me with your careless words!” “I thought you had a girlfriend named Megan.” Eve rolls her eyes as they step into the dining room. “Won’t she be upset with you for trying to pursue an older woman?” “Yeah Megan broke up with me while you were gone.” He looks down and sighs. “Said I’m just too secretive for her.” She pats his arm, sad to hear the news. “Sorry to hear that but maybe it was for the best.” He bats his eyes at her again. “Means I’m open and on the prowl!” Owen sets the plates on the table, not even looking up when they enter. “And you would be wise to not flirt with my fiancé if you wish to stay on the prowl, Nephew.” Xander grins, nearly bouncing on his toes. “So it’s true? He asked you to marry him?” “Yes, he did.” Eve laughs at the joyous look on Xander’s face. “So that makes this woman off the market.” Xander whoops loudly, hugging her hard before rushing over to hug Owen, who rolls his eyes at his nephew’s antics. “Awesome!! So can I be a groomsman or something?” “We will discuss it at another time, Alexander.” Owen pries himself from Xander’s grasp. “I have yet to make those decisions.” Fox steps into the room, smiling at the way her son is reacting. “Better figure it out soon. I’ve already got the ball rolling and would like to have everything finalized soon.” “So what’s left?” Eve takes the chair Owen has pulled out for her. “Menu, suits, number of guests, and decorations.” Fox settles into a chair next to Eve, waving a finger at Owen as he brings in platters of food. “I need to know how many groomsmen you’re gonna have so I can get the suits ordered in time.” “I will let you know by the end of the week.” He nods towards David. “I am currently waiting on a reply before I can go any further with my plans.” David sits next to Fox, watching Owen closely. “Are you sure you want me as your best man? You don’t want someone who’s known you longer?” Owen takes the chair next to Eve and begins to fill her plate up. “No I do not. If I had, I would not have asked you.” David rests his head on his folded hands. “Ok, but on one condition. I’m not the only one standing up there with you. You need to ask at least two more people.” Owen lifts a brow and turns to Alexander. “Then I believe you can be a groomsman.” “Perfect!” Alexander nearly spills his drink in his excitement. “So who’s gonna be the third?” Owen frowns down at his plate while playing with his fork. “I am not sure yet.” Eve places her hand on his, stilling the fork. “No rush.” She glances over at Fox. “So since I’ve already made you my Maid of Honor, that means I need to pick two more bridesmaids. I’ll ask Elisa tomorrow when she comes by for my report. I’d love for Angela to be one as well but I can’t see that happening during the day.” Alexander grins. “I can fix that. I can make Angela a human for a day or two.” “Perhaps it would be best if Eve did it instead.” Owen glances at her, lips twitching up. “How can she do it?” Alexander stares at his uncle in confusion. “You know she doesn’t have magic.” Eve glances between David and Fox, shocked. “You didn’t tell him either?” “Tell me what?” Alexander lays his fork down, watching his uncle warily. “What did you do, Uncle?” “Alexander, I would like to present to you your new queen.” Owen waves towards Eve. “She’s what?” He nearly knocks over his chair when he stands. “How?” “Long story short, Owen gave me some jewelry that decided I’d be perfect for the new role of queen instead of killing me.” She glares at Owen. “Lovely, isn’t it?” “You are not going to forgive me anytime soon, are you?” He stares back at her. “Forgive? That’s already done.” She looks away and stabs at her potato. “I just don’t know how soon I’m gonna let you forget.” David grins, lifting his glass. “Already fighting like a married couple, I see.” He sips. “So what report is Elisa needing?” “Miss Miller and I finished with the papers Owen gave us. We’ve identified the two forgers but both were off today. I’m hoping they will show tomorrow while Elisa is in the office so she can take them with her.” Eve takes a bite of her potato and tries to ignore the look Owen gives her. “Why didn’t you come to me before Elisa was called in?” His voice purrs dangerously low. “You gave me the papers so I figured you was leaving it up to my discretion.” She sets her fork down and pushes her plate away. “I called all those who needed to know right away in security and HR. I was told to call the police. That’s what I did.” Fox smiles, filling Alexander’s glass. “The culprits are part of my company, not David’s. So how they got acquisition forms and signed your name, I haven’t a clue. I asked Eve to call since it’s my company employees.” David frowns, this being the first he has heard of it since he handed the papers over to Owen. “Sounds like we will need to start doing better surveillance on our employees.” “I’ve taken care of that as well.” Fox grins. “Miss Miller will be putting in new security systems and upgrading several of our programs since she has showed me where we are lacking. I am glad I met her today.” Eve sighs, weariness catching up to her. “Maybe she can throw a few extra hoops in so it’s not so easy to authorize anything.” “So does this mean no more lessons?” Alexander gulps his drink down again. “Actually, no.” Eve smiles tiredly at him. “I still have a lot to learn and you can help me with that. You teach me and I teach you. Deal?” “Deal!” Alexander takes a bite of fish, brandishing his fork at her. “So when do we start?” Eve leans back in her seat. “Not tonight. I’m exhausted.” “Would you like for me to take you home?” Owen sets his fork down, watching her warily. “No.” She reaches out and squeezes his hand. “I brought some extra clothes with me when I came in so I could stay in my rooms here when needed.” His body relaxes slightly. “Then you will be staying?” “Since I don’t feel like fighting traffic and Samuel thinks he needs to be in every room I’m in, I think I better for the night.” She nods towards the cat curled up by the door. “He’s been like this all day. I’m sure he’ll take up half of the bed tonight as well.” “Not if Uncle Owen can help it.” Alexander mutters as he lifts his glass to his lips to take a drink. “I heard that, young man.” Fox waves her fork at him. “Maybe I should make Samuel sleep with you and see how much rest you get.” “It is quite alright.” Owen stands and begins to clean up the plates. “Samuel and I can take turns hogging the covers.” Eve stands as well, trying not to yawn as she pushes in her chair. “Fox, David, thank you for a lovely dinner. Xander, tomorrow night we’ll start lessons back up again.” She winks at Owen. “I might see you if Samuel allows it.” She stifles another yawn. “Goodnight.” They laugh as Samuel gets up, stretches, and follows Eve out into the hallway like he’s a guard dog. Hours later Owen quietly walks into Eve’s room, making sure not to wake her. Samuel’s head pops up from behind her, eyeing Owen warily as the door closes. Owen glares back, meeting the cat’s eyes until Samuel looks away. He strips his clothes off, laying them on a nearby chair so nothing can fall out of his pockets. Samuel tries to stake his territory by curling up tight against Eve’s back as she sleeps on her side. “You know very well that is my spot and my mate, Cat.” Owen grumbles as he walks to the bed, reaches out and scoops up the offending animal. “Sleep somewhere else.” He gently tosses Samuel off the bed and lifts the covers, curling up against Eve. Samuel jumps back on the bed, gives Owen a disgusted look and surveys the bed. Owen closes his eyes and begins to drift off when a weight suddenly lands on his hip. He looks over and sees Samuel hunkered down on his hip, paws kneading Eve’s side of the blankets. Owen tries to shift the cat off but Samuel refuses to budge. Thoroughly peeved, Owen closes his eyes against and ignores the weight on him in hopes that the cat will get squished in the middle of the night when he rolls over. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
