Chapter 66
Zuko disentangled their bodies and went to wash his hands. When he returned he placed a robe over Katara’s shoulders and ordered her to stand. Once she was on her feet he kicked her legs apart and lowered himself behind her to gird one of his loincloths on her after washing her up. After her private areas were covered he arranged the belt around the post so she had enough room to climb into bed.
This time Zuko also wrapped his arms around her and pulled her tight against him so he would know if she made any type of movement.
Katara was certain he was going to rape her again. He was hard and she was naked and vulnerable beneath him. She was steeling herself for the pain of intrusion when he withdrew his cock from her entrance. She felt the knuckles brushing against her bottom, heard the hollow slap of flesh against his palm and felt the hot exhalations on her neck as his breath grew ragged and he whispered her name.
She was reminded that she was merely a man as the warm sticky fluid assaulted the back of her thighs. He’d told her he was merely a man and that she was a temptation. She’d reduced Zuko, the arrogant prince who’d chased them from the South Pole to the North and halfway back down again to masturbating while calling her name.
After this revelation she tried to remember everything she’d ever heard of the power women had over men. The tales in the Southern Water Tribe were great love stories such as the time her father went seal hunting in the dead of winter to satisfy her mother’s meat craving while she was carrying Sokka or how Bato sat outside Amnak’s hut for several days during a blizzard to convince her father he was worthy of her hand.
The ones from their Northern sisters were much darker. A woman can not deny her husband his pleasure is a common saying in both Water Tribes but took on a different meaning as it crossed the equator. In the North where women were forced into arranged marriages with men for whom they had no affection it meant women had no power over their own bodies inside the constricting bonds of marriage. They completely belonged to their husbands.
Katara had learned the real reason female water benders, highly prized as brides for their potential to bear sons with the gift, weren’t allowed to fight. The men believed such strenuous activity would increase their high rate of miscarriage so the women were banished to what eventually became the healing huts. In those prisons, away from the men who oppressed them, the women found new ways to interact with their element – healing.
It came about as they were caring for the ones who were beaten for bending or attempting to escape. After the initial discovery they learned to practice feeling within their bodies and learning all of its secrets. As the knowledge of their internal functions grew the embittered women saw an exploitable flaw in the men’s logic. They learned ways to turn a man’s selfish desires against him.
Generations later the radical decision to oppress women and limit access to their element to the beneficial art of healing became the cultural norm. Women were raised not to question their fathers, brothers, and husbands once they were married. Having been raised watching their docile mothers, not knowing their true history, or that the spirit had been beaten out of them it became blasphemous to speak of using Waterbending against one’s husband.
Those early secrets were passed down to a select few women – the Keepers. Women who would sneak into their daughters rooms and teach them the truth while battered, bloody and reeking of semen their husbands had forced into them. The next morning the bruises would be gone and all would appear to be normal again. Each night the lessons would continue and their daughters would learn how to do the things necessary to survive and exact revenge.
The first to be act taught to all female Waterbenders after they’d begun menstruating was how to reach inside during a moon cycle and draw the fluid out. During Yugoda’s lessons it was taught so a woman would always be available to receive her husband’s affections. In the lessons taught by Kanna, a cousin who had been named in honor of her grandmother, she learned it was the foundation of many ways a female Waterbender could drive a man to destruction as payment for the pain he caused her. Her own father had tied her to her bed while she was sleeping so the man he’d chosen to be her husband could force himself on her enough times for them to be considered married.
Kanna was a keeper.
During Kanna’s lesson she learned that same technique to halt her flow could be used to expel a man’s seed and deny him children if she was apathetic towards him. In cases of genuine hatred she could ensure the seed planted and hurt him by later disturbing the waters to miscarry any child growing within her. If she truly wanted to cause him despair she could ensure his children died shortly after birth or were born with a defect. In their harsh environment was crueler than an outright death sentence. It also called his manhood into question; never becoming pregnant was a flaw of the woman. A weak child was a flaw in the man as a woman could only bear what he gave her.
In the South the phrase recognized how men respected their wives and treasured the gifts of home and family a woman bestowed on them. Her tribesmen were kind, gentle, and loving towards their women and did everything they could to protect, provide, and make them happy. A sentiment the women wholeheartedly returned quite often in the bedroom.
She remembered waking up when she was younger and going to her parent’s room and seeing them moving beneath the furs. She didn’t understand what they were doing until she was older, but she would forever remember the expressions on their faces, the adoring way they looked at each other and that they had very little embarrassment when they saw her. Her father simply explained he was showing her mother how much he loved and appreciated her and when she got old enough to get married her husband would to the same for her.
The Southern tribe cherished their female battlers and they were often courted by the strongest warriors. Every man prided himself on being able to protect his woman. Now that she was a Waterbending master she would be have been hard pressed to find a man who felt himself worthy of her. That number was drastically reduced now that her virginity had been stolen from her.
Most men preferred a woman with whom they could learn the union of Tui and La together. There were some who accepted a bride who had been raped during a Fire Nation raid, but strong affection and the intent to marry was already there. She had no such bonds as the only available male her age group was in the village was Sokka and she doubted Taruk would still want her.
He was a year older than her brother but as his guardian Bato had recommended he be allowed to accompany them to war; her father agreed. Taruk had lost both parents during the raid that killed her mother. He was only fourteen at the time but like Katara seeing his parents die matured him beyond his years. The night before the men left he led her to the watchtower he’d built with Sokka. He gave her a bracelet that he had carved for her; in between clumsy kisses and nervous touches he promised that when he returned he would marry her.
The bracelet was at home in her hope chest. She had placed it there out of fear she would lose it during her journey so she had taken it off and paid no mind to her grandmother’s warning. It was bad luck to remove jewelry a man you cared for placed on you. It signaled doom for a relationship.
Katara cried herself to sleep knowing that Zuko had taken that chance for true love and affection from her and she was no closer to finding a way to get revenge on him for doing this to her.
MsScarletTaylor: Thank you for the review. I’m glad you’re enjoying the story. Katara is being sheltered by Zuko so she hasn’t had a chance to realize many of the things going on around her. She’ll wise up slowly but surely.
