Genevieve leans hard on her cane as she stares at the door to Mr. Burnett’s room. In all the years she has known him, not once has he angrily called her asking for a private meeting. She lifts the small cross around her neck, kissing it for luck before knocking on the door. It whips open before she can knock more than once, Mr. Burnett’s face clouded with anger as he stares down at her.
“Genevieve, I am glad you came so quickly. I would like to get this taken care of right away.” He steps aside to let her in. The older woman shuffles in, glancing around at the room to see what would make him so angry. Her eyes light on the molding pulled away from the wall but she cannot see beyond it. “Mr. Burnett, I am sorry if the molding has come away from the wall. I can have it fixed right away and get you a new room.” “It is not the molding, Genevieve, but what is behind it.” He sighs, sure now that she did not know of the camera. “Please look closer.” She steps closer to the wall, pulling her glasses from a small case. Eve steps into the room from the bathroom as the older woman puts on her glasses and peers up at the molding. “My lord!” The woman gasps, clutching her chest. “Is that what I think it is?” “Yes, Genevieve. There is an active camera set up to record what happens in this room.” He watches as the older woman pales as the realizes what kind of recordings are being taken. “I trust you knew nothing of this?” The woman rounds on him, becoming angry at his accusation. “I am a good catholic woman, Mr. Burnett! Such things are against my beliefs!” Eve rolls her eyes and finally speaks. “I’m sure he doesn’t believe you did this, but he had to ask Mrs. Bayers.” Genevieve turns and notices Eve for the first time. She eyes her appraisingly before relaxing. “What you say is true but I cannot fathom why anyone would do this awful thing.” “Porn pays big.” Eve shrugs. “And it pays even more if someone doesn’t want a wife or husband to know they aren’t being faithful.” Genevieve stares at her in horror for a moment before her mind begins to work again. She shuffles towards a nearby chair and settles into it, thinking hard. “My husband and I are no longer able to take care of the maintenance of such a large property so we have contracted out some of the work that needs to be done. Our granddaughter usually takes care of finding the contractors and setting up appointments.” “Figures.” Eve groans as she walks over and leans into Owen’s arm. “She wouldn’t be the perky chic out in the front lobby would she?” “Yes, she is working the front desk today.” Genevieve scowls. “Is there a problem?” “I call flirting with my fiancé a problem but if she’s making the appointments and selecting to contractors, then she probably knows what’s going on.” Eve shrugs and threads her fingers through Owen’s. Genevieve stands, anger radiating off of her body. “I will look into this and the man who ran the LAN lines a few months back for our internet. I remember him removing some molding in every one of the rooms in the main building.” She thumps her cane against the wood floor. “All these years and just now having an incident like this. I thought I raised that child better!” She glares at Owen before shuffling to the door. “Sherriff Williams will be called right away and I’ll make sure he has every room checked. This is a disgrace!” Owen opens the door for her as she mutters angrily on her way out. He waits until she is gone before gently closing the door. “I can assume we are already recorded. What would you like to do about it?” “Other than to get a copy for us to watch later?” She grins as he takes in her implication. “Maybe you can show me how to send out a ‘scout’ to see where the main computer is? If this building doesn’t have WiFi yet, then that means there has to be a central computer here to store everything.” He pulls her into his arms, kissing her forehead. “I like you’re thinking. There is no WiFi at this moment because of all the mountains in this area. Poor signal quality. Everything has to be run through cable, which means the computer is probably here in this building.” “My thoughts exactly.” She winks. “So tell me, Old Man, how do I find this computer without tearing down walls and following wires?” He pulls her to a chair and onto his lap. “Listen well, Child, and I’ll tell you.” His eyes dance with mischief. She steps into the office, eyeing the police officers walking around in the lobby. “Tell me again why you want me to wipe our room off of the computer?” She grins at his frown. “And don’t tell me it’s just your ego.”
He pushes her down into the seat in front of the computer. “Do you really want the local police watching you have sex?” She chuckles, her fingers flying over the keyboard. “Point taken but I still think it’s gonna be strange that they find nothing on our room when it shows it is recording on the camera.” She sees him, frown even more. “Go out and keep them busy. I’ll see what I can do to fix it.” She pulls out two jump drives, setting them on the desk as she opens several files before fiding the ones she wants. With a wicked grin, she mutters “Amateur” and begins to shift files before putting them on the first jump drive. Glancing up, she sees Owen talking to the Sherriff as they head towards the office. She pulls the first drive out, pocketing it, and pushes the next one in. After a 5 second download, she pulls the second jump drive out and logs off the computer. She finds a chair by the door and opens a nearby magazine as if she had been sitting there reading the whole time. “I can get another computer to run the Inn while you search through this one.” Owen steps into the room, lifting a brow as he sees her sitting and reading. “Can I do anything else, Sherriff?” “No, I think that will be all.” The older man smiles warmly at Owen, then sees Eve sitting nearby. “Is this lovely woman, your fiancé?” “Yes, it is.” He holds out a hand to Eve, who takes it and stands up to smile at the Sherriff. “This is Evelyn Anderson.” “Pleased to meet such a charming young woman, Miss Anderson.” The Sherriff tips his hat to her. “I’m Sherriff Williams, Madame.” “Pleased to meet you as well, Sherriff Williams.” She curls her arm in Owen’s. “I do hope this matter is resolved quickly.” “Young Miss Bayers has already confessed.” Sherriff Williams winks at her. “We could hear her and her Grandmamma screaming about it when we pulled up. Every one of my deputies heard her admit to it to her Grandmamma.” “Will the cameras be disabled?” Eve relaxes against Owen. “They are being taken down as we speak. It’s a good thing that only the two of you are in the main house.” The Sheriff walks over to the computer and powers it down. “The rest are in the cabins where no cable have been run to yet.” He winks at them and smiles. “But rest assured we will check those as well to be certain.” “Thank you, Sheriff.” Eve smiles warmly back. “I’ll sleep easier tonight knowing that the cameras will be gone.” He picks up the tower and pulls the cables out of the back. “I’m sure you will, Madame.” He tips his head towards Owen. “Will you be staying long, Mr. Burnett?” “No.” Owen gives Eve’s hand a squeeze. “We will be leaving in the morning. However, Genevieve has my number and I can be reached there if there is anything else you require.” “I will need a statement but I can do that over the phone, type it up and mail you a copy to be signed.” The sheriff lifts the tower into his arms and walks towards the office door. “If I need anything more, I will be in touch.” “Thanks again, Sheriff.” Eve opens the door so he can walk through. “My pleasure, Madame.” He tips his head to her and walks out.Eve steps out onto the veranda, sighing in relief as the last of the police leave. Having sat through Owen calling several trusted contractors and getting quotes on ‘remodeling’, she was finally ready for a bit of quiet. She walks towards the rose garden, admiring the way the roses had already bloomed so beautifully, when she hears someone softly crying. With a soft sigh, she follows the sound until she finds Genevieve sitting on a wooden bench wiping her eyes.
Eve settles on the bench next to the older woman. “Are you ok, Genevieve?” “Of course I’m not ok!” She sniffles, hands balled into fists. “I’ve given my life to this place just like my parents before me and theirs before them and now my granddaughter has disgraced our family! Mr. Burnett will put us out on the street for sure because of her idiocy!” Eve lays her hand on the older woman’s fists, rubbing them until she loosens her grip. “He won’t do that to you.” “You don’t know that man. He is ruthless when he’s angry.” Genevieve looks away. “I know him better than you think.” Eve pats her hand, smiling. “If he was going to toss you out, then why is he talking to contractors about putting in a walk in shower and safety rails in for your rooms?” She laughs at the older woman’s shock. “Yes, I’ve been listening to him for the last hour talking on the phone and he’s even putting in a security system for you just in case you fall. He cares about you, Genevieve.” The older woman sniffs back more tears. “He’s always been good to me and my husband but when my daughter died he warned us about taking on a young woman at our age. I knew she was smitten with him, has been since she first lays eyes on him when she was twelve. I should’ve paid more attention to her.” “Her mistakes are hers to bear, not yours.” Eve sighs, shaking her head. “My dad was a cop and he said sometimes it takes someone to fall rock bottom before they can grow up and start doing the right thing.” Genevieve looks up at the sound of footfalls along the garden path. Seeing Owen, she dabs at her eyes and tries to straighten up. Eve smiles sadly up at him and he kneels down in front of the older woman, taking her hands in his. “Genevieve, I have already taken care of the cost and scheduling of the repairs. It should be finished within the week. I have also asked for some remodeling to your rooms to make you more comfortable.” He gives her hands a gentle squeeze. “You should have called me to let me know you were having problems. I have already put in an ad for a full time live in maintenance man and you can choose the man you think is best suited for the job. I am also adding to the budget for you to hire a full time front desk clerk and cook so you won’t feel so stretched thin.” “You won’t be replacing us?” Genevieve starts to cry again. “Of course not.” He pulls her to her feet, sliding her arm in his to help her balance. “Now let me get you inside so you can clean up. Since there is no time for you to make dinner, I will take you and George out. I have already arranged for meals to be delivered to the guests in the cabins.” Eve winks at Genevieve as she shuffles along side Owen.
