Chapter 64: Dark Secrets
Zim paced back and forth beside Dib’s bed in the Sick Bay, pausing every now and again to watch the lines flickering by on the heart monitor and the computer modeled after a human Electroencephalogram. The Tall Irken frowned as he watched this screen, noting that Dib’s brain waves occasionally grew erratic, then went back to normal. He sighed, starting to pace again. There was a blip on his communicator, and he tapped it impatiently. “This is Zim.”
“Sir, we have the prisoner as requested.”
Zim turned to the doorway. “Come in.”
Two guards entered the sick bay, holding Lokis between them, then shoving him down onto his knees before Zim.
The Irken looked down at him impassively for a moment, then scowled. “Do you know who I am?”
Lokis swallowed hard, his horns lowered fearfully. “You are Zim…but…I know nothing more of you other than what Dib told me while I cared for him.”
Zim snorted. “Cared for him?”
Lokis frowned. “Yes. I tended to his needs; I made sure he had enough to eat and drink, I even stole rations for him.” The Vortian sighed softly, lowering his head and looking down at his bound hands.
Zim quirked an antenna, then lowered it. “I am in command of this ship, and I am the one who will decide your fate.” His antennae stiffened proudly and he stood up straight. “I am ZIM, future Tallest and ruler of the Irken Empire.”
Lokis nodded. “Dib had told me that.”
The Irken’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “How much do you know about him, Vortian? How much do you know about what was done to him? And remember, I choose whether you live or die.”
The Vortian looked up at Zim, speaking slowly. “Of him I know very little, other than the fact that you are the focus of his world, and that he’s very deeply in love with you.”
Zim’s eyes widened in surprise, his antennae pricking forward. “Oh?”
Lokis nodded. “You’re all he talked about.”
The Irken couldn’t help a small smile, but he quickly hid it, his expression stern once more. “He is very ill.”
Lokis’ eyes widened in concern. “What’s wrong with him?”
Zim scowled, reaching down and grabbing the Vortian by the horns, ignoring his yelp of pain as he hauled him to his feet and shoved him towards Dib’s bed. “See for yourself.” His scarlet eyes narrowed to hateful slits.
Lokis leaned against the edge of the bed, his horns aching as he looked up at the human’s pale face, the lack of expression there making him wince.
“Well, Vortian?” Zim growled, crossing his arms over his chest.
Closing his eyes, Lokis lowered his head. “He’s been secured.”
Zim scowled. “Explain.”
Lokis sighed, watching Dib’s face for any signs of waking, finding none. “The technology inside of his head has a built-in device that is designed to prevent him from escaping while he is being studied.” He swallowed hard. “And…since he’s been removed from the lab, it’s activated itself.”
Zim held his breath for a long moment, then let it out slowly. “What’s it going to do to him?”
Lokis cringed. “It’s programmed to incapacitate the monitor until he’s found again…but after a few days pass, it will self-destruct.” The small Vortian touched Dib’s hand, then squeezed it, worried by how cold it was. “It’ll kill him.”
Clenching his teeth, Zim grabbed Lokis by the neck, lifting him up until his feet were dangling and the Vortian started gasping for breath. “Deactivate it.”
“I can’t!” Lokis whimpered, his eyes wide with terror. “I wish I could, T-Tallest, but I can’t!” He struggled weakly. “Please, don’t kill me, I want to help him!”
Zim’s lip curled in disgust, and he dropped the Vortian on his feet, motioning to his guards. “Put him back in his cell.”
*
Flanked by the two guards who had brought Lokis to him earlier, Zim stepped into the cell housing the few Vortian scientists that remained from the crew that had been studying Dib. He walked up to Munin, who was held against the wall by thin metal coils around his wrists and ankles, his head lifting weakly as Zim and the guards approached. Munin scowled and hissed, baring his teeth and narrowing his eyes.
Zim stopped in front of the defiant prisoner, scowling. “Did you secure my human?”
The Vortian spat in Zim’s face, his fists clenching.
His scarlet eyes blazing, Zim wiped it off, then crossed his arms, his antennae quivering with rage. “If you value your life, scum, I don’t think you should try that again. Now—” Zim stepped forward, his dark eyes a mere inch away from the Vortian’s tiny orbs, his voice dangerously calm. “I will ask you one last time. Did you secure my human?”
Munin grinned. “Not so powerful, are you, Irken? Are your scientists not resourceful or intelligent enough to have told you that?” He laughed. “One thing is certain, they’ll never deactivate it. It is encrypted with the most complex Vortian codes in existence. He’ll be dead for years before you even begin to decipher them.”
Zim grabbed Munin’s horns and wrenched on them hard. “I don’t think so, Vortian. You will tell me how to deactivate it, or you will die.”
The Vortian grimaced at the pain, his voice a venomous hiss. “You will get nothing from me, Irken filth. I would start saying your goodbyes.” Munin started to laugh maniacally, his eyes wild and his mouth starting to foam.
Stepping back, Zim shook his head, then turned and nodded to the guards assigned to the prisoners. “Torture him and see if he talks.” Zim muttered. “If not, take every pleasure you wish in destroying him.”
The guards nodded, saluting as Zim left the cell.
