Chapter 63: Figuring It Out. Part Two
(Natural Leisure Resort - August 10th, 2008)
Mother and daughter sat side by side on the beach, looking out over the foamy, white topped, waves that crawled up the shore and broke within inches of their feet.
Anne's voice barely rose above the sound of the water hissing over the man made beach. “Kim. Have you ever wondered why your father and I let you do some of the things you do? Things most other parents would never let their children do? Like running all over the world, chasing and fighting bad guys?”
The younger Possible wasn't sure what to make of her mother's questions. She had been expecting an answer to her question about twins. Her mother wasn't the type to avoid a difficult subject. Which could only mean there was something ominously relevant to what she asked. “I always figured you just trusted me to do the right thing and knew I'd take sensible precautions...”
Anne smiled wanly. “There is that. There is something else too. You asked me if you had a twin. You do. A twin sister, as a matter of fact.” Seeing her daughter open her mouth to ask the obvious questions, Anne shook her head and continued. “Let me tell this before you ask, Kimmie.”
Puzzled, Kim nodded her head. She could wait, she hoped. But the desire to ask who and what and where burned inside her.
“You and your sister were born less than three minutes apart. Two beautiful babies. Perfect in every way. Until...”
“Mom?”
Anne shook her head. “Sorry Kim, It's just so hard to talk about it. You see, only a few hours after the two of you were born, something happened. There was a woman, posing as a nurse... She tried to kidnap both of you, right from the maternity ward. Hospital security spotted her and informed the police. They set up a dragnet and caught up to her less than two hours later. They got you both back from her and tried to take her into custody, she got away, but...”
“But? Mom? What is it? Where is my sister? Why didn't you ever..?”
“I'm getting to it, Baby. At first, we were so relieved to have you both back... Then we started noticing things. You see Kim, something happened to your sister when that woman had her. Something, that even today, nobody can explain.” Anne hung her head, unable to look at her surviving daughter. “Your sister is... She's... I don't know how or why, but her mind is not there. Physically, she is perfectly fine. There is no brain damage... But there is nothing there that makes her a person...”
Anne fell into memories of holding a child that never recognized her. Never moved. Never cried. Had no light in her unfocused brown eyes. A child that only did one thing. Existed.
Kim took her mother into her arms. Held her close, feeling the hot tears she shed.
“We tried. So hard. For months on end... But there was nothing we could do for her... Oh Kim! You have no idea how hard it was to finally admit the truth, that she would never be normal.”
“What happened? Where is she?”
Anne tried to dry her tears. Tried to compose herself. “She's at the Upperton Long Term Care and Hospice Center. They have the facilities and staff to care for her. We had no choice. She can't feed herself. Move on her own. Even with help, there was no way we could take care of her. No choice...”
“Hush, Mom. It's ok, I understand. But... Why didn't you ever tell me?”
Looking up in her daughter's face, Anne saw that she really did understand. It gave her the resolve to answer. “At first, we thought you were too young to understand. Then later, as you grew up, your father and I saw how compassionate you were. We thought that, if you knew, you might put aside your own life to try to help her. We couldn't let you do that. Maybe we were right, or maybe not, but it was the choice we made.”
Kim saw something in her mother's eyes. A glint of emotion that wasn't sadness or regret. “Mom?”
Anne took a deep breath, forcing her emotions back into the part of her mind where she had kept them for so long. “I asked you about why we let you go on your missions. You see, Kim. In a way, it was our way of letting you do something for your sister. Every crime you stopped. Every villain you put away. Every innocent you saved... It was all in the hope that someday, somehow, you would right enough wrongs to make up for what was done to her.”
Kim's eyes widened as she thought about her mother's words. Thought about the person who caused her such pain. “The woman..? Was she one of them? One of the Gorgons?”
Anne shook her head. “I don't know. The description the police gave us didn't match, but she could have been in disguise. Kim. I can't help but think about how much it fits with what we know about what they have done to us.”
It came to Kim in a flash, what the emotion was that she saw in her mother's eyes, before it was hidden away again. Vengeance. The same emotion surged within her. Her heart went cold as she thought about her twin sister. About her brothers. About all the things those blonde triplets had done, or caused to be done, to her entire family. Her impending mission to rescue Bonnie, Tara, Justine, and Monique now had an added dimension. Payback.

Nana, Slim, and Shego were standing together, watching the two distant redheads talk. Behind them, Nana could hear Betty interrogating Buster, trying to glean what information she could about his daughter and where she worked, and anything else that might be useful in helping to find her. It also served to quell the man's irritation and make him feel as if things were moving forward. Not far away, just outside the restaurant, near the edge of the jungle, Wade was apparently doing the same with the man's wife.
Her own attention was split. Not only was she trying to see Kim's reaction to finding out about her twin, she and Slim were also trying to explain it to Shego. “Someday, Shego, when you have kids of your own, you'll understand how hard it was for Anne and James to make the decision they did.”
Slim nodded, thinking back to that time. “We all volunteered to help. Me, Nana, Sylvia, June... But y’all have no idea. Raisin' a child is hard. Raisin' twins, even more. But raisin' and carin' for a child that is worse than catatonic... That there takes the kind of commitment that goes beyond the super human.”
Shego watched Anne crying in Kim's arms. She was still trying to come to grips with finding out she had another half sister. With all her heart, she wanted to go to the two women and hold them both close. But something about the way they described the institutionalized girl made her unsure. It reminded her way to much of something she had seen before. She was still debating whether or not to say anything about it, when a voice interrupted her thought process.
“That makes no sense!”
Turning around, the three of them could see Ron with his face pressed right up close to the video screen. One of his fingers was tracing the lines of the family tree that they had been shown before.
Nana gave him a questioning look. “What doesn't, Ronald?”
Ron turned from the screen to see that his outburst had drawn a curious crowd. “They're trying to create their version of the perfect human right? That's what Kim said. So, why are they doing it all wrong?” He pointed back at the screen. “See here?” He traced the lines from James and Gemini to the intersections that led to at least one of the triplets and branched off again, leading to Bonnie, Tara, and Justine. “Kim said they wanted to crossbreed. And they did. But, why did they stop a whole generation too early to do it?” His finger went to names that were further down on the tree's branches. “If this genetic knowledge thing works the way Kim said it does, why not use the ones that have the most built up?”
Shego felt herself go pale as his finger pointed to the names of herself and Mego, along with Kim's. The only names left of their generation of breeding. As she grasped what he was talking about, her previous thoughts were driven out of her mind. “I'd usually be the last person to say this, but I think Stoppable has a point.”
Nana nodded. “A very interesting point. I believe I can give an answer to part of his question.” She looked over a Shego and Mego. “We know that the... Gorgons, for want of a better name for them, drove a wedge between Shego and her brothers. Separating them. There can only be one reason for them to do that. They didn't want you to breed together...”
While Mego just looked puzzled, Shego placed her hands on her hips and glared at the Possible matriarch. “Now just hold on a sec, GILF girl. Why would they do that? It seems to me they would be wanting to do just the opposite.” She lifted her hands and green flames danced through her fingers. “Think about it. Why would they take a pass on breeding with people who have the potential of giving their offspring superpowers?”
Unnoticed during the conversation, Anne and Kim had returned. It was Kim who ventured an explanation. “Because, Shego, they not only are the products of Hall's experiments, but it would seem very likely that they also received a good bit of his screwed up Nazi thinking too. They want to make pure, perfect, humans. To them, all the Go's would be something else. Mutants. Freaks. In other words, not human enough for them.” She paused and shook her head. “Just goes to show they aren't nearly as perfect as they already think they are, doesn’t it?”
Shego let her flames die out. “I can see that. So, we know they are fucked up in the head, but that still doesn’t explain the rest of it.”
Kim looked at her, puzzled. “What rest?”
It only took a few minutes to bring both Kim and Anne up to speed on the part of the conversation they missed. Once they knew about Ron's observation, it was Anne's turn to put forth a theory. “They would appear to be creating a genetic base. A foundation to build on. While Bonnie, Tara, Justine, and maybe now Monique too, may not be their ultimate goal, they would be a stepping stone to get there.”
Kim peered at the screen. “That has to be it. If they were the goal, the Gorgons would have stopped their manipulation of our family after those three were born. Ron is right, they should have tried to take...”
Nana saw why her great granddaughter paused. With what they had figured out, there was only one viable name, as the triplets would have to be thinking, left on the list. “They would have tried to capture you Kimberly. Not only are you the last name on the list, but with your intertwined dual genetic history, you would seem to be the one with the most to offer them.”
Ron jabbed his finger against the screen. “That makes what they are doing make even less sense. Kim, you told us they are dropping their sneaky stuff because they are near their goal. But if you are the best choice, they shouldn't be! They should be waiting until you have kids to make their move. Don't you get it?”
Kim knew Ron sometimes came up with the weirdest stuff out of the blue, but she couldn't quite figure out what he was talking about.”Why until I have kids?”
Since Wade was still busy talking with Gloria, Ron went over to the laptop and changed the image on the screen. It once again showed the still image taken from the abduction video. “Look! It's as simple as the birds and the bees. Mo, Tara, Bonnie, Justine, the Gorgons... All birds! No bees!”
Everyone went quite. It was simple. Obvious. Staring them in the face the entire time.
Trust Ron, Kim thought, to see it first.
There were only two explanations she could think of. Either she was completely wrong about the triplets having reached their ultimate goal, or something was not what it seemed. Since she was sure she was right, that only left the other choice. The question was, what was she missing? What did those deceptive Gorgons have up their proverbial sleeves?
Deception.
They had manipulated her family for decades. Always in the shadows, even when they were right there in plain sight. With them, nothing was ever what it seemed.
She forced herself to focus on the facts. The Gorgons needed a male to carry out their plan. Waiting until she, or one of her children, had a male offspring was their best bet. It had to be her, since she was the only one with her unique genetic history... Or was she?
The question flitted through her mind. She couldn't make an answer appear that she knew had to be right. Not with how things stood. It didn't fit the facts... Unless...
Deception. Nothing was what it appeared to be.
Kim walked over to the computer and nudged Ron out of the way. She sat down and looked over to her mother. “Mom? What's the code to access my tracking implant?”
Though she was unsure what her daughter was up to, Anne quoted the string of numbers.
After inputting the code, the screen changed to show a map of the island, with a steady dot representing her exact position.
“Now, give me the rest of the codes.”
Anne went pale. “But Kim...”
“Mom. The codes!”
Anne spoke hesitantly. Kim typed in each number. More dots appeared on the screen. One of them was right next to her own, which was Ron's. Another appeared close by, and was moving. Kim glanced over her shoulder and saw Wade coming toward her. As she typed in the last of the codes, Kim told her family and friends her crazy enough to be possible idea. “I found out from Wade a few years ago that Ron and I had tracking chips imbedded under our skin. When I pressed him on the matter later, I found out it was Mom's idea. Too keep us safe. She wanted to be sure that she could always find us in case of trouble.” As she said it, she knew it was because of what had happened to her and her sister as infants. “All of us who took risks.”
The screen changed. It expanded into a global map. Two more dots appeared.
Nana stared at the dots that glowed from a spot only a few miles distant from Middleton. “That's not possible!”
Kim stood up and looked across the restaurant at her family. “Anything's possible, for a Possible.”
