Puck feels her watching him long before she steps from the trees nearest him. He glances to the side, seeing Eve saddling Thunder, and steps closer to the trees so they can’t be heard. “Grandmother.”
“My Prince.” The old woman leans against her staff, watching Eve as she works around the stallion. “I see you have forgiven her.” “There is nothing to forgive.” He glances around and sees they are truly alone for now. “I know where I am in her heart and she in mine. That is all that matters. The rest will work itself out in time.” “There will be those who will try to replace you as consort, bond or no.” She lifts a brow, daring him to lie. “Of course there will be.” He sighs softly, scuffing the ground beneath him. “I have been too quiet among our people for too long. They will see me as weak and only seeking a temporary sex partner. I will have to dissuade them from that notion.” “Good.” Her wrinkles stand out as she smiles warmly. “I taught her father and grandfather magic when they were young. She is not so different from them.” His lips twitch up and he glances back at Eve again. “So what am I missing?” “Music, young man.” She winks at him. “Music is her heart and showing her how it flows like a melody is key. She can see it but she needs a way to understand it.” “I bow to your wisdom, Grandmother.” He bows his head slightly and winks back. “Cheeky child!” She laughs and shakes her staff at him. “Be sure you remember my words!” He sobers, bowing low to her. “I will, Grandmother.” She looks up and sees Eve watching them suspiciously. “Go on, Child. Your mate is waiting for you.” “Yes, Grandmother.” He smiles at Eve and quickly heads back to her. Eve watches as the old woman disappears back into the trees, Puck not looking back as he walks towards her. She pats Thunder’s shoulder, letting the stallion’s warmth calm her nerves. “Is everything ok?” “Of course.” He smirks at her over Thunder’s saddle. “Just a friendly warning to keep the suitor’s at bay.” Eve blushes, ducking her head in embarrassment. “I had hoped last night’s show would keep them away for now.” He steps around the stallion and pulls her into his arms. “The women, yes. However, you gave the men a challenge I am sure a few of them will try.” “Damn it.” She grumbles, burying her head in his chest. “Why do I always have to fuck things up?” He gently lifts her chin, staring into her eyes. “You didn’t, believe me. I will just have to be as crafty as they are stupid.” “What?” She laughs and shakes her head. “I’m not even sure I know what that means.” “Don’t think about it too hard, My Dear.” He lightly kisses her forehead. “I would hate for you to melt that beautiful brain of yours.” “So would I.” She steps away and checks Thunder’s girth again. “Time to head back.” He laces his hands together, giving her a place to put her foot for a leg up. She lifts a brow at him but steps into it anyway. He boosts her up as if she is as light as a feather and grins when she groans as she settles into the saddle. “Problems, My Queen?” He tries to hide his grin with no luck. She narrows her eyes at him and shifts in the saddle. “You know exactly what my problem is since you created it.” “Perhaps when we get back I can help you work out those sore muscles.” He leaps into Warrior’s saddle and winks at her. “Don’t you start or I’ll hold you to giving me an allover body massage.” She twists and stretches as Thunder begins to walk. “It would be my pleasure, My Queen.” His grin widens as he thinks of the fun he’ll have while running his hands over her naked body. “I bet it will, Brat.” She growls back, clucking Thunder into a trot. Checking the rest of the mares and foals went by quickly for them as they headed back to the house. The number of unicorn foals had doubled from the last count they had made, causing Eve to become alarmed and worried over their safety. Puck allowed her to continue recharging the old symbols she found along the way, feeling the barriers around the property become stronger each time. He could see her exhaustion catching up to her as they finally reached the main stables. Justin sees them coming in and rushes over to help Eve from her saddle. Puck leaps down from Warrior’s back, taking her into his arms as she begins to sway. At Justin’s worried look, Puck sighs softly and lifts her off her feet. “Long day and she wouldn’t take any breaks. I will put her to bed and come back out to settle the horses.” “No need.” Justin shakes his head, chuckling. “I know how she is. You take care of her and I’ll get the horses settled. Maybe even give them an extra treat.” Thunder noses Justin, demanding a treat right away. Puck grins, turning away and carrying his now sleeping Queen back to her soft bed.She drifts on a warm, soft darkness, neither awake nor asleep. Something snags at her thoughts as movement along her skin relaxes her tired muscles. She sighs, not wanting to wake and find it all a dream but not wanting to sleep any longer either lest she miss something important.
Hearing her soft sigh, Owen leans over and gently kisses her shoulder. “If you don’t wake up soon, Love, I won’t be able to finish your massage.” He slides his hands down her back again, kneading out the small knots over her hips. “Don’t wanna.” She mumbles into the pillows around her head. “You can’t make me.” He smirks, digging his fingers in deeper and causing her to yelp in surprise. “Maybe, maybe not but that means the hot bath I had planned will be a lonely one.” She tries to stretch but winches when a few still sore muscles pull. “Ok! Ok! I’m working on it.” “Work faster and roll over.” She can hear the amusement in his voice. “Yes, Master.” She mumbles as she rolls over and stretches out again. He leans over her again, eyes dancing with laughter. “You remember that.” He begins to massage her, starting at her collarbone. She opens her eyes enough to see it is already full dark outside. “How long have I been asleep?” “All afternoon and most of the night.” He glances at the clock on the night stand. “It’s 2am.” “What?” She starts to sit up but he pushes her back down. “Why did you let me sleep so long? I thought we were leaving yesterday after we got back?” “We were but you were exhausted.” He moves down her chest, listening to her sigh as he works out more knots. “You did more magic in the last day than most humans do in a week. You needed the rest.” “Did I do right taking Nalyah’s magic away?” She looks away, regret tingeing her voice. “That is not for me to say, My Queen.” He sits up, worry creasing his forehead. “Since I am involved, I can’t give you advice on that.” “Who can?” She bites at her lip. “I want to know that I did the right thing before it’s too late.” He sighs, glancing at a nearby dressing mirror. “Only Oberon can make that decision. You would have to ask for his help and hope he doesn’t ask for too high of a payment in return.” She sits up as well, twinning her fingers in his. “I know you don’t much care for that option but I’d really like to stay on his good side. Don’t you think letting him know what happened before someone else tells him a different version that is far from the truth would be a good idea?” “Yes, you are right.” He strokes her knuckles absently as he thinks. “But my presence won’t make it easier on you. He will think I put you up to it and become very disagreeable.” “Then I will face him alone.” She smiles coyly at him. “Maybe it will earn me brownie points.” He snorts in amusement and slides off the bed. “Perhaps. But you will have to be presentable first. I do not cherish the thought of him gazing on your naked body.” “Yeah, I don’t think that would get me brownie points with your sister either.” She yawns, climbing off the bed to pull on the clothes he is holding out for her. “So how do I do this?” “The old fashioned way.” His lips twitch up. “You’ll get to make your first mirror call.”Eve stands outside in the middle of the side pasture, staring at the dressing mirror in front of her. She finds herself wishing Owen had followed her outside but she knew his reasoning was sound. Out in the open so he doesn’t feel as if I plan on trapping him and alone so he knows I made this decision of my own free will. She sighs, closing her eyes and feeling the magic gathering around her. “Ok. Let’s get this over with.”
She raises her arms, letting the magic engulf the mirror. She chants the words Owen had made her memorize, filling the words with pure intent. When the last word leaves her lips, she opens her eyes to see if anything has happened. At first she sees nothing, just a dull glow around the mirror. Thinking she had failed, she reaches out to end the spell she had begun. “Giving up so soon, Little Queen?” Oberon’s voice comes from a rising mist in the mirror’s surface. “I wasn’t sure you would answer my plea, My Lord.” She bows her head slightly. “I wouldn’t presume that you would have time to help me. Your plate is full enough without my sorrows.” His face begins to appear in the mirror, a slight frown marring his features. “Wise of you to think so, Little Queen. If you wish an audience with me, then you must let me pass through.” “Of course, My Lord. How rude of me.” She bows her head again and waves her hand across the mirror, opening a portal. “I am still learning and sorry for the lapse in my manners.” He steps through, gazing appraisingly down on her. “The lapse is forgiven, young one. What is it you wish of me?” “A situation came up with a Dryad here and I had to pass sentence on her.” She glances towards the house where Owen is waiting on her nervously. “I am not sure that the decision I made was the right one. I would like your counsel.” “I see.” One eyebrow lifts as he gently taps a finger against his lips, still considering her words. “Show me.” Her face falls. “Forgive my ignorance again, My Lord. I don’t know how to do what you are asking.” His lips twitch up slightly in amusement. “Attend, Little Queen, and learn.” She watches as he waves a hand across the mirror, calling up her memories of the night before. He watches everything, a slight frown on his face as he sees Nalyah’s defiance. Surprise replaces the frown as he watches her take Puck in front of the awaiting crowd. When the mirror goes dark again, he begins stroking his lip in thought. “He allowed you to stake claim in front of everyone gathered?” He watches her closely as she nods. “That is something I would never allow my Lady Wife to do nor would I have ever believed Puck capable of it himself. You surprise me, Little Queen.” He lifts a brow at her. “Again, I ask. What is it you wish of me?” She sighs softly, letting him see all of her emotions laid out before him. “I am unsure of myself, My Lord. I never asked for this, nor do I really want it. I will have to accept what has been given to me but it is not me.” She lays her hand on her heart. “I am not a power hungry person and I don’t ever want to be. I have already made Puck promise to end my life if I ever go crazy from the power. I’d rather die than hurt someone. That’s why passing judgment on Nalyah bothers me.” She runs a hand through her hair. “I want you and I to work together. I don’t always know what is best for your people and you do. I want to listen to your wisdom so I can make the best choices I can for them.” “I see.” He turns, walking away from the mirror as he looks around the pasture. “And what will you be willing to give?” “Honestly, I don’t know.” She glances back at the house again. “I won’t give anything that will harm someone that doesn’t deserve it. You will have my cooperation if what you need is within reason.” His lips twitch up again. “You are learning well, Little Queen. Very well. I will accept this for now.” He turns back to her. “Your sentence is light but adequate. The Dryad was bold in her move to replace you. Titania would have killed her for it. Perhaps this lesson will teach her more, however. If it pleases you, I will keep an eye on her to be sure that she learns her lesson.” Eve eyes him warily, feeling as if he is suddenly testing her. “No. It was my sentence and my problem. It is my burden to watch her. I appreciate the offer though, My Lord.” He smiles brightly at her. “You are learning, Little Queen. Excellent.” He turns towards the mirror and starts to walk towards it. “My Lord, I have one last matter to speak with you about if you will allow it.” She blurts out nervously. He stops, glancing at her over his shoulder. “Another request?” “No. A formal invitation.” She bites her lip. “Puck has asked me to marry him and I have agreed. Even if you and Puck have not always agreed, you are his family and I respect this. I am inviting you to our wedding.” He turns towards her again, his face unreadable. “Did Puck request our presence?” “No.” Her nerves ratchet up a few more notches. “He doesn’t even know I’m inviting you yet.” She shrugs, glancing back towards the house again. “I thought maybe if I invited you in person you might want to come of your own free will. There’s no obligation to show up. I just thought it would be nice for his family to be there.” His face softens, amusement dancing in his eyes again. “I see. Did he tell you about our customs?” “A few.” She smiles. “I’m trying to incorporate what I can so he feels like it’s his wedding too.” “Would you like to be handfasted as is our custom?” He lifts a brow again, still amused. “I would but I know better than to ask it of you.” She shrugs again. “I would be happy just knowing you are there to support our union.” “I will take it into consideration.” He slightly bows his head to her. “Is there anything else, Little Queen?” “Oh god no!” She blurts out. “I’ve asked enough as it is!” Realizing her mistake, she covers her face to hide her blush. “Sorry. Forgive my rudeness again.” His laugh washes over her and she feels him gently touch her hand. “I can see why Puck adores you. You are very honest and to the point. Refreshing in a human, I can assure you.” He lets more magic wash over her. “You have exhausted yourself needlessly. Rest now. I can show myself back home.” He steps away, letting his magic reach out to the mirror. It glows brightly as he steps through it, almost becoming blinding as the spell ends. She hears the front door open and looks up as Owen steps out onto the porch. “I saw the flash.” She hears the worry in his voice. “Did it go well?” “I think so.” She smiles at him as she strides towards the house. “I’ll tell you while you get the mirror back in the house.”Owen strokes her back, watching as the sun starts to light its way through the tops of the trees. They had been sitting on the swing talking since Oberon had left, Eve curled up against him. Oberon’s behavior confuses him and he knows that is a major warning sign. Eve sighs softly, sitting up and stretching.
“As eager as I was to get here, I hate asking how soon til we leave.” She stands, pacing the length of the porch. “We can leave as soon as you are packed.” His lips curve up at her confusion. “I knew you were ready to leave so I packed last night while you were sleeping. We can leave as soon as you are ready.” “Perfect!” She grins and strides to the door. “I’ll go pack now so we can leave before the morning traffic starts up.” He chuckles as he stands, walking over to his bike to run through a few checks before they leave. The sound of a truck driving up the lane catches his attention a few moments later. He glances back at the house to see if Eve has heard it, frowning because he knows no one comes here so early in the morning. Justin’s truck pulls up in front on the main barn and Owen watches warily as it shuts off, no one getting out for several minutes. Owen finally walks towards the truck and spies Justin tiredly rubbing at his eyes. “Is everything ok?” “I should be the one asking you that.” Justin climbs out of the truck and yawns. “I drove the property line like I do every evening and found some woman crying her eyes out by the side of the road. She claims Evelyn took her life away and kicked her out. I took her back to my place until I could find somewhere for her to go and all she did was cry all night.” Owen closes his eyes and sighs heavily. “Nalyah.” “Yep. That would be the one.” Justin smiles sadly. “Do I really want to know what happened?” “No.” Owen leans against the truck. “Let’s just say she’s earned her punishment. She’s a Dryad that no longer has her powers and cannot step foot on the property ever again.” “I see.” Justin rubs at the stubble marking his chin. “Who punished her?” “Eve.” Owen glances over at him. “She’s not happy with her decision either but saw no other choice.” “Then Nalyah had to deserve it.” Justin glances up at the house and sees Eve moving around. “Is she a danger to anyone?” “I doubt it.” Owen sighs again. “Just be careful she doesn’t manipulate you into anything.” “I grew up with strong women around me.” Justin grins and nods towards the house. “I think I can keep Nalyah from causing too much trouble.” “Good.” Owen pushes away from the truck. “But if you need anything…” “I’ll call.” Eve turns off the lights and steps out of the house carrying saddle bags for the bike. “Leaving already?” “She’s eager to go.” Owen starts to walk away. “I will make sure she calls you when we get back so you know she made it safe.” “Thanks. I appreciate it.” Justin waves at Eve and turns towards the barn. Eve frowns, seeing Justin as he disappears into the barn. She waits til Owen is standing next to her taking the saddle bags before blurting out “What is he doing here at the butt crack of dawn?” “Getting away from a sobbing Dryad.” He ties the bags onto the bike and hands Eve a helmet. “He took her in? Is he crazy?” She stares at the barn in shock. “Perhaps but I think he will get her straightened out soon enough.” He lays a hand on her shoulder, catching her attention. “Trust that he knows what he’s doing. Besides, he can always call us for help.” “Ok. You’re right.” She pulls the helmet on as he mounts the bike and starts it up. “Let’s head home.” He smiles at her through his own helmet, revving the engine as she settles behind him. “As you wish, My Dear.”
