Chapter 61: Final Deception
*Disclaimer: I do not own the Invader Zim characters and am not making any money off of this story. The characters and concepts of the Invader Zim show, as well as JTHM, to which there are a few references, belong to the almighty Jhonen Vasquez (and I think partially to Nickelodeon). ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY JHONEN!!
******* IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER THINGY: Anubis 5 is a rapper in the group Exit Theme; the reference to Anubis 5 is meant as a tribute to his coolness, and I am not making any money off of it. He just rocks.
***This chapter is dedicated to vili, my new reviewy peep of DOOM!! Yay!!
Late in the evening, Munin sat back, scratching at the base of one of his horns absently and sighing in frustration. “This is getting boring. We’ve learned how to bottom out the monitor’s levels, but how can we raise them to their highest? We need to see both ends of the scale.”
Hugin drummed his fingers idly on the desk, pursing his lips. “You mean we need to evoke an elated state of emotion in him.”
“Yes.” Munin muttered irritably.
Hugin considered this for a few minutes, then grinned. “Well, why don’t we give him the one thing he wants most, then?”
Munin quirked a horn. “And what would that be?”
“His Tallest.”
Munin and Hugin both grinned, and Munin stood, leaving the lab to find his technicians.

Dib lay on the floor of his cell, still gazing blankly into the darkness. He let out another heavy sigh, closing his eyes and cringing. He had no more tears left. No more hope. If there had been anything in the cell he could have harmed himself with, he would have done it by now. Reaching out and grabbing his ruined Nailbunny t-shirt, he balled it up and rested his head on it, using it for a pillow.
A moment later, he lifted his head and looked down at the t-shirt, looking around for any protrusion in the cell that he could use. Rising to his feet, he began to trail his hands along the cool metallic walls, searching with his palms and fingertips. Standing up on the small bench, he continued to feel along the walls, pausing when he found an old fixture that must have been used to hold some sort of light at some point, which would explain why it was always so dark in his cell. He pulled hard on it, nodding when it didn’t budge. Sitting down on the bench, he began to slowly twist his t-shirt into a tight coil, consumed by a dark numbness that had worked its way down to his very core.

As the Vortian moon Anubis 5 grew large on the main view screen, Zim and his soldiers prepared for battle. A blindfold had been wrapped around Lard Nar’s blinded eyes, his hands cuffed in front of him as he was held by two royal guards.
“Take prisoners if you are able; they will be taken to Vort and enslaved. Any who resist, you can kill.” Zim’s expression was hardened, his ruby eyes cold except for the burning hunger for vengeance deep within them.
As they landed on the moon’s surface, the Irkens activated their protective suits and combat weapons, at Zim’s side as he marched towards the building where the labs were housed.
*********
As Dib knotted the t-shirt and slipped it over his head, tightening it around his neck, he began to wonder if he had any regrets. He scowled. Yeah, he did. He regretted not seeing Zim for what he really was...
“Dib?” A familiar voice came from the mouth of the cell, and Dib’s head jerked up, his eyes widening.
“Zim?!”
The Tall Irken sighed in relief, walking over to him. “Thank Irk you’re safe—I was so worried.”
Dib pulled the T-shirt off and ran to him, throwing his arms around him, his heart absolutely aching. “I thought…I wasn’t sure…they said you weren’t coming for me.”
Zim snorted. “And you believed them?”
Dib sighed. “I shouldn’t have…I’m sorry…but…” he wrapped his arms tighter around the Irken’s body, smiling and stroking his back. “I missed you…”
Zim stroked Dib’s hair gently, kissing the top of his head.
As Dib held Zim tightly, he suddenly frowned, squeezing a little harder. Zim wasn’t breathing, and there was no give to his flesh. Stepping back, he looked at Zim’s confused expression, then scowled, punching him hard across the face.
The holographically disguised robot hit the ground, the hologram of Zim’s body flickering and disappearing, the robot lying lifelessly on the ground, Dib’s knuckles bleeding.
“FUCKING BASTARDS!!” Dib screamed, kicking the robot to the other end of the cell. How could he have fallen for such a trick? Zim wasn’t coming for him.
Stepping up on the bench once more, he wrapped his t-shirt around his neck again and slowly wound the other end around the fixture that jutted out of the wall as bitter tears streaked down his face.
********
The Irken soldiers burst into the lab, pointing their weapons at the scientists, technicians, and at Hugin and Munin.
“Get down on your knees, Vortian scum!! Hands behind your heads!” the lead soldier ordered. When only a few of the scientists did as told, a shot was fired and one of the scientists dropped, twitching on the floor as bluish-black blood spread slowly upon the floor beneath him. The rest of the scientists immediately dropped to their knees and did as ordered. Hugin and Munin knelt, putting their hands behind their heads, scowling.
“You are interrupting our research, filthy Irken idiots.” Munin growled, his horns flattening against his skull. “And if the Resisty finds your ship unmanned, you will be quite unfortunate.”
It was now that Zim stepped forward from the heart of his soldiers and threw the blind Lard Nar to the floor in front of the two head scientists.
“There is your precious leader, Vortian. And you will suffer the same fate if you do not tell me where the human is.”
“Human?”
Zim snarled, his tentacles extending from his pak, aimed directly at the two head scientists. “The one that you have taken from me.”
“Oh…” Hugin murmured. “You mean the monitor.”
Munin cleared his throat, then muttered. “He’s in the lower level. In cell 18.”
Zim scrutinized Munin, then fired a shot from the tip of one of his spider-legs, hitting him in the shoulder, waiting until his shrieks of pain had died down a little before he spoke again. “Lie to me again and I will kill you, Vortian worm.”
Hugin started shaking, blinking up at the Tall Irken in terror. “I…c-can take you to him…”
Zim called two of his guards forward, ensuring that they cuffed Hugin’s hands behind him before he was pulled to his feet. He pointed down at Munin, then spoke to the rest of the Irken soldiers. “Restrain him. I will deal with him personally.” Zim scowled, turning back to Hugin. “Lead the way.”
********
As Hugin led Zim and the two guards towards the cell at the end of the corridor, there was a loud string of cursing, and then silence.
Zim’s heart leapt into his throat and he began to run…it was Dib…the second he reached the opening to the cell, he saw what Dib was about to do, and shouted at him.
“DIB!! DIB, NO!!”
Dib turned his head, looked at Zim for a few seconds with pain-dulled eyes, then shook his head and jumped.
