Chapter 60: Pain
****NOTE: er, just an additional disclaimer for this chapter...if you can't handle mild goriness, don't read it.
“This is incredible!! Look how the graphs are fluctuating!” Munin rubbed his hands together gleefully. “This is the most information we’ve gathered from a monitor to date…a wealth of knowledge on how this species functions emotionally…how they can be manipulated! Yes! Perhaps even controlled!”
Lokis stood off in a dark corner, cringing at his superior’s joyful discourse.
“Hugin! Come here! Just look at these readings…see how the monitor’s brainmeats are functioning at such a low level…”
Hugin nodded. “Very interesting…if this reaction can be reproduced in other monitors, we may be able to infiltrate and control the species. We could add them to our resistance…”
Munin grinned and pointed at a different screen. “And see here, even the chemical reactions inside his head are altered…the levels have changed.”
The other scientist tugged on one of his horns. “Fascinating…is he asleep?”
“No—and that’s what’s incredible! His energy levels seem to have completely bottomed out!” Munin pointed at the lower readings on the graph.
“So this alteration in his emotions has affected everything from his brain chemicals to his physical activity?” Hugin blinked at the head scientist in awe.
“Exactly.” Munin looked around, then saw Lokis in the corner. “Lokis! Go and feed the monitor.”
Lokis sighed and saluted half-heartedly, going down to the cafeteria and putting together a meal for Dib, bringing it to his cell. When he reached the cell entrance, he forced a smile. “I’ve brought you something to eat, Dib.” When there was no answer from within the shadowy cell, he frowned a little. “Dib?”
“I’m not hungry,” came a hoarse murmur.
The small Vortian cocked his head. “But you haven’t eaten yet. How can you not be hungry?”
“I said, I’m NOT hungry.” Dib growled.
Lokis’ face fell. “I’m sorry.”
There was a long silence, and then a harsh sigh. “So am I.”
The Vortian blinked into the darkness. “What for?”
A bitter laugh, and then a muttered response: “For being so naïve. Your boss was right.”
Lokis clenched his teeth, his expression pained. The head scientists had paid him almost 50 years wages up front for him to do this…for their research…and he needed it…well, he sort of needed it…he could always use it, anyway…
“I’ll leave this for you anyway, in case you’re hungry later, then.” Lokis murmured, sliding the tray through the protective field and rising to his feet. He gazed into the shadows for a long time, not knowing what to say. Lokis almost jumped when Dib spoke.
“Have you ever loved someone, Lokis?”
The Vortian rubbed one of his horns absently. He’d heard of love, but never really saw any use in it. “No…why?”
“Don’t. It fucking hurts.”
Lokis stepped back, then turned away and walked slowly down the corridor, his head lowered.
**********
Zim stood in the docking bay, surrounded by twenty of the Irken guards, his arms crossed over his chest as he waited for the tractor beam to pull Lard Nar’s ship into the bay. The Vortian had tried to use an escape pod, but Zim had already ensured that the technicians disabled all of the electrical systems on the enemy ship as soon as it was caught in the beam.
Once the ship was in the bay and the docking bay door had closed, a few soldiers went over and bolted the ship down so that it wouldn’t be able to take off without authorization. Zim’s eyes were narrowed in hatred as four guards and two soldiers started cutting through the door of the ship while Lard Nar scrambled around inside. Once the door was open, a few shots were fired before the Vortian was dragged out of the ship roughly and his hands were bound tightly behind him. The two guards dragged him over to Zim and forced the traitor down onto his knees before him.
Zim scowled down at him, his antennae quivering with rage. “What have you done with him?”
Lard Nar just scowled, not answering.
Zim kicked the Vortian hard across the face, sending him down onto his back on the floor of the docking bay. Putting a foot in the middle of Lard Nar’s chest, he leaned down and hissed at him. “You have no idea the kind of torture that awaits you at my hand if you don’t tell me where he is, Vortian scum.”
Lard Nar shook his head. “I am loyal to only one cause: the Resisty. And we will be your downfall, Irken trash.”
Before the Vortian could say another word, Zim had grabbed one of his horns, a spider-leg extending from his pak and hovering threateningly over the thick appendage. “Tell me what you’ve done with him, or you’ll lose this.” Zim dug the sharp point of his spider-leg into the flexible bony tissue.
Sweat trailed down Lard Nar’s face as he met Zim’s cold red eyes. “You would torture me here, in front of your soldiers?” He sneered. “Go ahead…show them what kind of leader you are.”
Zim lifted his head, looking around at his soldiers who surrounded him. One by one, they began to cross their arms over their chests, scowling down at Lard Nar. Turning back to the Vortian, Zim hissed through his teeth. “Wrong answer.” There was a laser blast and the stench of seared flesh filled the air as Zim sheared the horn off, tossing it aside as bluish-black blood oozed from the stump and Lard Nar started howling in pain. Zim grabbed him by the throat and held him down, his face inches away from the Vortian’s. “Start. Talking.”
*********
Dib sat in the shadowy cell with his back against the wall, his knees drawn up against his chest and his chin resting on them as he gazed blankly into the darkness. The only thing he could feel right now was a dull ache in his chest and a gnawing sense of betrayal.
“I…love you.”
Zim’s words played over and over in his head, and he tried to picture what Zim’s face had looked like when he’d said those words, trying to understand how Zim could look him in the eye and lie to him. But then again, he was an Irken…and Zim had admitted before that Irkens took what they wanted. And what Zim wanted more than anything right now was to be Ordained officially as Tallest.
Dib felt tears sting his eyes again. He wasn’t worth coming back for. After all that he and Zim had been through together…after saving Zim’s life…after being thrown in prison and having Zim come and rescue him…after all of that, he still wasn’t worth coming back for.
Burying his face in his knees, Dib began to sob brokenly.
********
After both of his horns had been amputated in the docking bay, Lard Nar was dragged up to the lab on The Massive and restrained against a wall by thick metallic coils. As the scientists started preparing an information retrieval device based on Zim’s design and specifications, Zim hissed into Lard Nar’s face.
“I know your horns will eventually grow back, traitor. I don’t think your suffering is fit for your crime.”
Lard Nar scowled at him, clenching his fists in his bonds. “Irken filth…”
Zim just shook his head, grinning sadistically as he extended two of his spider-legs. “I think I shall do a little experiment of my own…let’s see if your eyes grow back.” The sharp points of his spider-legs hovered threateningly over the Vortian’s eyes, and Lard Nar started struggling violently.
“No!! NO!!”
“Tell me where he is.” Zim hissed. “We are going to pull the information from your disgusting little pile of brainmeats soon anyway…you’d be far better off to just tell me. I might even let you live.”
Lard Nar was shaking, a whimper catching in his throat as he swallowed hard. “A-Anubis 5…a moon in t-the Vort system…”
Zim waved the scientists off, turning to them. “Tell the officers on the Control Deck to set a course for Anubis 5 and proceed at maximum speed.” Turning back to Lard Nar, Zim grinned sadistically.
There was a bloodcurdling shriek, and then silence. Zim wiped the blood off of the ends of his spider legs as he walked from the lab, hurrying to the Control deck.
