Angel thanks the cheerful nurse and reassures Charlie that he’ll find Husk and everything will be fine. The spider demon leaves the small room and searches for Husk in the hallways on his way to the exit. He’s not surprised when he doesn’t spot the bartender anywhere. Angel makes his way out of the building and to his amazement he sees Husk sitting on a bench not far from the medical building.
It doesn’t take him long to reach Husk with his long strides and he takes a seat next to the depressed looking cat demon. Angel doesn’t say anything but places his hand between them on the bench. Husk ignores him all together at first, but reluctantly takes Angel’s offered hand into his own, “I wasn’t expecting to find ya so soon.”
Husk remains quiet for a long time refusing to look at Angel. When he does eventually speak, he still doesn’t make eye contact, “I didn’t know where else to go. I can’t drink and there are just too many smells at the casino…so here I am…contemplating all my after-life choices.”
Angel places another hand on Husk’s knee and squeezes it lightly, “Why didn’t ya tell me ya felt this way?”
Husk shakes his head as he finally looks at Angel. “You were so upset when you came to tell me and you were stressed about having to tell Valentino. Then we had our fight and…I just felt like I was being overly dramatic about the whole thing.” He lets out a tired sigh, “I was trying to be strong for both of us and I had it made up in my mind that this was no big deal, but then I saw our babies’ heartbeat and…it was a big deal.”
He squeezes Angel’s hand and brings it to rest on his own stomach. Angel spreads his fingers out across Husk’s furry abs and the cat continues, “It’s like I knew a baby was in there, but I could pretend it wasn’t until I saw it…them.” He lets out a nervous chuckle, “Fucking twins.”
Angel averts his gaze at the mention of the twins, “Uh…that’s kinda my fault.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” He looks at Angel with confusion, “How could you possibly have anything to do with me having twins?”
“I…um…I kinda got a twin sister.” He gives Husk a guilty grin, “Guess I never mentioned her before…she ain’t here…pretty sure she’s upstairs.”
Husk doesn’t say anything for a long time and when he finally reacts, to Angel’s surprise, he laughs, “Fuck me…your fucking kids will probably be three foot tall when they’re born.”
Angel joins in with the laughter until Husk leans against him laying his head on the entertainer’s shoulder, “I’m too old for this shit and…and I really am scared.”
Angel rests his head on Husk’s head, “Tell me everything…we’re in this together and if you’re upset then so am I.”
Husk takes in a deep breath and slowly lets it back out, “Sure all this pregnancy stuff is bullshit, but at least I somewhat know what to expect. Then comes the birth…have you thought about that?”
“I’ve actually tried not to think about it.” He places a hand on his stomach and frowns, “Seems kinda horrifying.”
“Exactly…and does this magic booze make us magically have a way for these kids to come out?” The bartender shudders a bit thinking about it, “Or will we have to have surgery? It’s all the uncertainty.” He places his own paws over his stomach with hesitation, “Then we have…kids…I don’t know fucking nothing about raising kids.”
Angel lifts his head up and places a hand under Husk’s chin, forcing him to look at him, “Ya make some valid points, Whiskers, but I ain’t gonna let ya do any of this alone.”
“That doesn’t make it any less terrifying.”
A small smile appears on Angel’s face at Husk’s words, “No, it doesn’t, but those flickering heartbeats belong to us. We made them…and sure we didn’t know we were making them, but here they are.” He takes both of Husk’s paws in his hands and looks the cat demon in the eyes, “We’re in Hell, but we made a miracle…not just one miracle either…we made three of them.”
Husk finally gives Angel a genuine smile, “I guess I never thought of it that way before.” He leans in and gives the taller demon a chaste kiss on the lips, “Maybe, having a few kids with you ain’t such a bad thing after all.”
A large, goofy smile spreads across Angel’s face at Husk’s words, “Does that mean ya wanna have a family with me and we raise our three cute little spider kittens together and be the best daddies this side of Hell?”
The cat demon shakes his head with a chuckle, “Yeah, something like that.”
Angel stands up from the bench and takes Husk’s hand in his, “Then let’s get back to the hotel. Charlie is probably losing her shit right about now.”
Husk nods and they make their way back to the hotel, but when they walk in no one is in the main lobby. Angel looks at Husk, “I gotta feed Nugs if ya wanna hang out…I kinda gotta work tonight so…”
“Sure.” The cat demon felt like he’d lived through a whole week after finding out he was having twins that morning. He couldn’t imagine having to go to work after all that.”
Angel leads them upstairs and as soon as the door to his room opens, the little pig comes trotting up to meet them, “Hey, Nugs…did ya miss me?”
He picks the pig up and snuggles him a bit, “You’re gonna be a big brother, Nugsy, to three little babies.”
Husk rolls his eyes as he shuts the door behind them, “You act like he knows what you’re saying.”
An offended expression appears on the spider demon’s face, “How dare you, Husk! He’s excited…can’t ya tell?”
The bartender looks at the pig’s blank expression and lets out a sigh, “No.”
Angel doesn’t respond and places Fat Nuggets next to his bowl and pours the pig’s food into it, “I really don’t know what to tell Val…do ya think I could wait a few weeks?”
“I don’t see why you should have to tell him tonight.” A concerned expression appears on Husk’s face, “Just be careful…remember it ain’t just you anymore.”
He places a paw on Angel’s stomach making Angel smile, “Yeah, I know…I’ll try not to piss him off tonight.”
Before Husk can say anything else they hear a knock on the door followed by Charlie’s voice, “Hey, guys…I’m knocking this time…is it okay for me to come in?”
Angel gives Husk an amused look before responding, “I’m not currently having my guts rearranged…you can come in.”
Husk gives Angel an irritated scowl as Charlie opens the door, “I’m still so sorry about last time.”
The entertainer waves her concern away, “As you can see, I got Husk back to the hotel all safe and sound.”
She gives them both a smile before stepping farther into the room, “Well, I’m glad to see that things aren’t as tense as this morning.” She pulls two envelopes out of her jacket pocket and holds them out to the two expecting demons, “The two of you rushed out so quickly this morning that you forgot these.”
Angel takes the envelopes from her and hands Husk the one with his name written on it, “What’s this?”
The blonde begins speaking again as they open the envelopes, “I thought that maybe once the two of you get used to the idea of being pregnant and all, that you might want these.”
Husk manages to open his first and the two little blobs from the screen this morning are pictured on the glossy paper, “Charlie…I’m sorry.”
Her smile falters at Husk’s apology, “Sorry? Sorry about what?”
He glances at the picture once more and gives Angel a small smile, “Sorry for ruining everything today.”
Charlie glances between them and giggles, “You two aren’t fooling anyone…you’re so adorable together.” When they both look away from her, she clears her throat, “Anyway, you have nothing to be sorry about. This would be an overwhelming situation for anyone.”
Angel looks down at his own sonogram photo and smiles, “Thanks, Charlie…ya know, ya harp on redemption all the time, but if it weren’t for this hotel these three babies wouldn’t even exist.”
Tears gleam in the hotel owner’s eyes at Angel’s words, and she touches her hand to her chest over her heart, “Aww, Angel…you’re right and that is so sweet.”
The entertainer gives Husk another smile as he takes the bartender’s photo and looks at it, “Yeah, that bar sure does make more than drinks.”
Husk gives Angel an annoyed growl and crosses his arms over his chest, “You talk too fucking much, Legs.”
Angel laughs and Charlie looks appalled, “I’m going to pretend like I didn’t just find out that the two of you fuck on the bar.” She clears her throat before speaking again, “Anyway, I just want you guys to know that no matter what you need, don’t hesitate to ask. I want to help…whether that be with your pregnancies, birth, or just helping once these little cuties are born.”
Husk gives Charlie a genuine look of gratitude, “Thanks, Princess…I really mean that.”
She beams with a smile as she finally launches herself at both of them and wraps them in a group hug, “I’m so excited for you guys!”
When she releases them, she gives them both a serious look, “Um…I know you want to tell the rest of the hotel together, but is it okay if I tell Vaggie? She’s been really worried about you two.”
Angel nods as he looks at Husk, “Yeah, you can tell her…it ain’t right to keep things from the person ya love the most.”
He gives Husk a wink that Charlie definitely doesn’t miss and she smiles, “Great! I’ll just leave you two alone then.”
She turns to leave and closes the door behind her. No sooner than the door shuts, Husk bridges the small gap between them, pulls Angel’s face down with his paws, and presses his lips to the spider demon’s lips. When they break away from the kiss, Husk snuggles his face in Angel’s chest fluff as the entertainer wraps his arms around Husk, “Be careful at the studio tonight, Legs.”
“Don’t wait up for me, babe.” He gives Husk a snarky smile, “Ya resting for three now.”
“Fuck you.”
Angel’s smile widens, “That’s what got us in this mess in the first place.”
