(Chapter Six: The Decision)
As Sersel’s eyes keep caressing the ‘sleeping beauty’ beneath him, his heart and stomach quake and his head throbs as he reflects on what it felt like to have to give Belle up and then live without her for the next couple months.
It felt like some fearsome creature had shredded his whole body with its thick, dagger-like claws and then after he was on the ground bleeding, dug its claws into his heart before ripping it out.
It took a few months before he could get out of bed and he wept all the time. He’d never felt so utterly broken in his entire existence.
It wasn’t until within his enchanted mirror, he saw Belle very clearly falling in love with The Beast that his strength started returning to him.
He knew that Gaston didn’t stand a chance with her, so the arrogant hunter’s relentless pursuit of her wasn’t enough to set a fire under him, so to speak.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t Belle falling in love with The Beast in his grotesque form which alarmed him the most. No. Instead, it was Belle falling in love with him despite his terrible personality along with his history, pre being turned into angry beast.
Sersel had a lot of connections with magic wielding humans and supernatural beings including ‘The Enchantress’ who cursed Prince Adam.
She is part of the high order of The Fae of Taren. A very formidable group of magical beings, indeed. His power, however, rivals all of theirs combined.
Nonetheless, because of his association with Aaeana and others around her and for other reasons as well, he knows a lot about Adam.
He also knows the real reason why Aaeana cursed Adam and it had nothing to do with what she’d told him.
In fact, when a little birdy whispered into his ear why she’d really cursed the poor man, he guffawed until his insides just about plummeted out.
It was proper for high elves such as himself to always carry themselves in a controlled, graceful manner but he just couldn’t keep up the facade on that particular day.
She also, romantically pursued Sersel for a long time, on a level he didn’t desire with her, for various reasons before one day, he clearly told her that he could never be with her, in the way that she wished.
Therefore, Aaeana attempted to wreak vengeance upon him by spreading despicably horrific rumors about him like that he had a proclivity for deflowering bevies of large breasted, prominent hipped, human females.
Thankfully, her venomous, slimy gossip didn’t take too well since she’d already slighted so many others and everyone was already very familiar with her callous, malicious ways.
In time, everyone did find out about him falling in love with Belle but by then, he was too ensconced within his desire for her, to care—that is, until Varduel got his filthy paws on her.
In the present, Sersel cherishingly strokes Belle’s hair as her presence keeps drawing forth many more emotions and thoughts from within him.
How his chest ached after he put his hands on her, that day. He had never imagined an instance would arrive when he would inflict violence upon a female.
It was the most disgusting, sickening thing he’d ever done and after that day, he vowed to never lift his hand to Belle, ever again.
Then he called her human as if it were something filthy—something to be ashamed of.
He witnessed his old self clawing and clamoring his way back to the surface and it terrified him like nothing else ever could.
Truthfully, how could he judge Gaston or even Adam, when he was once so wretched, himself?
Then again, maybe he still is.
He’s been steadily looking down his nose at someone like Aaeana. But now, he’s doing the same thing that she did to Prince Adam.
He’s causing Gaston, Adam and even Belle to suffer in this curse he placed upon them along with causing future suffering when he dissolves the curse as he originally intended to do, so they will be forced to live with what the curse made them do—with each other.
He actually snickered at seeing Adam smacking Gaston’s rear.
He derived a twisted satisfaction from knowing how much it was going to sting when the real, ‘man’s man’ version of Gaston was forced to confront the reality that another male had violated his a—derrière (hon-hon-hon-hon—hon).
He did all of this because of the petty emotions of jealousy which had started to swirl inside of him like a typhoon.
He was never in a position to look down on Adam or Gaston.
Just like them, he selfishly didn’t respect Belle’s feelings, wishes and space by interfering in her life through his casting of the curse, so that he could be with her.
He allowed his jealousy of The Beast/Adam’s budding relationship with Belle, to drag him to the same monstrous depths that Gaston was dragged into from his jealousy.
He forced his will upon her like they both did in many ways by creating this curse and placing her in it without her permission.
The more he keeps thinking about this, the more unsettling feelings start becoming deeply lodged inside of him.
Finally, his stroking hand stops.
This isn’t right. I have to undo this curse.
I don’t want Belle’s love, if it means having it like this. I have stooped down to both of their levels but it isn’t too late to change course.
He caresses her hair one last time before planting a gentle kiss on her forehead.
I love you, B—
Just then, he hears his bedroom doors, swinging open.
“Get your filthy hands off her, at once!”
His eyes swing towards the booming voice before his startled eyes behold none other than Gaston and Adam, glaring back at him.
“H-how did you get into my castle?” Sersel exhales.
The snarl on Gaston’s face reveals how much he doesn’t have time for small talk.
He fires two, bright blue bolts Sersel’s way from his palms.
But Sersel teleports away with Belle and it strikes his bedpost, instead.
“Imbecile! You could have hurt Belle with your impetuousness!” they hear Sersel indignantly growl.
They spin in his direction before beholding him, now carrying the still sleeping Belle, over his shoulder.
Gaston gives him a look of contempt.
“I have no time for all your overblown, unnecessarily long words, I don’t understand.”
He points to the ground in a way that says he’s putting his foot down.
“Hand Belle over, NOW or else!” he threatens.
A mocking smirk manifests on Sersel’s face.
“Or else what? I dodged your pathetic, pitifully aimed strike at me, once. I can do it, again.”
“We’ll see about that.”
Gaston shoots at him, once more.
Sersel vanishes before brazenly reappearing much closer, in front of them.
As they both gawk at him in awe, a smug smirk slinks over Sersel’s features.
Belle blinks from his shoulder and reappears back in the bed.
“You forget. Gaston. ‘I’ am the one who gave you those powers, in the first place. And I can just as easily take them back.”
Gaston’s jaw drops in flabbergasted disbelief.
“So, you are admitting you cursed us then?” he says.
Sersel tilts his head.
“Perhaps,” he replies, his impish smirk revealing the answer.
Gaston scowls and trembles with his outrage as he clenches his fists.
“How dare you do this to us! I want to know why! Why did you do this to us!” Adam pipes up, where Gaston fails to.
“I have my reasons,” Sersel tells him, his eyes sliding away from them.
Adam stares at him while feeling very affronted and astonished by his shameless evasiveness.
“You have your reasons? Those supposed reasons of yours, are affecting our lives! Care to go into more detail about these so called ‘reasons’ of yours? We’re all ears.”
Gaston interjects.
“Oh! And what did you do to Belle! Why isn’t she awoke!”
Adam’s eyes awkwardly shift towards him.
“It’s ‘awake’ Gaston,” he says, weakly.
Gaston looks at him with a confused expression before his eyes flash down with a childlike mortification.
“Right. ‘Awake.’ I knew that,” he mumbles.
“Hmmm. It seems you two have a lot of questions. Let’s trade. Two for one. You tell me how you got into my castle. I tell you my reasons for cursing Gaston and dragging you and Belle into it with him.”
They both stare at him, then at each other before looking back at him.
“Alright, fine,” Adam sighs.
Adam holds up his hand before a necklace with an amulet dangling from the thin, silver looking chain, blinks into it.
Sersel gasps as he instantly recognizes the adornment.
“Where did you get that?” he says, appearing stunned.
Adam gives him a sly smirk.
“Belle’s smarter than you thought. Before you took her away, she left us with a little note that we found, telling us what it did—allowing her to get into your castle with just a thought. Looks like it works for anyone.”
Adam starts shaking his head.
“Tisk-tisk. You should be more careful, Sersel.”
Sersel gives him a wry, sarcastic smirk.
The necklace flashes from Adam’s hand straight into Sersel’s.
Adam gawks at his elegant hand and then at him and then back at his hand.
Adam realizes that he knew it was missing all along and figured out that’s how they got into his castle. Crafty weasel.
Sersel smirks with venomous self-satisfaction while tauntingly playing with it.
“Thanks for returning this to me. Appreciate it.”
Adam’s face goes from stunned to an enraged snarl.
His eyes fly from his hand to his face.
“Go to hell! We gave you your answer, now give us ours.”
Sersel’s eyes flash towards Adam from the necklace in a slightly menacing way as his smirk lingers.
The adornment vanishes from his hand into thin air.
“Alright. I’m a sorcerer and elf of my word. Besides. The information won’t help you, in the end,” Sersel says.
He goes on.
“So. Let’s start with the easy one—right after you two appeared, with a few magical words said in my head, I placed her under a sleeping spell.”
Gaston grimaces with his fury.
“You-you! Deranged fiend! Now, even if we rescue her from your grimy clutches, it will be for nothing because we can’t break your spell on her! You nasty, slimy hearted troll!” Gaston bellows.
Sersel’s energy has now changed from antagonistic and pretentious, to guilty and vulnerable.
His haunted eyes, slide down.
“I didn’t do it to hurt her,” he quietly says.
“What! Then why did you do it, then!” Adam retorts.
Sersel keeps his vision away from them.
His mouth starts crumpling in on itself as anger starts brewing inside of him.
He jerks his gaze back to them.
“I love her more than you two ever will!” he tells them, seething.
They both appear stunned.
“Well, how can we even know how much we love her compared to you when you stole our memories and cursed us? What does that even mean, anyway? You’re saying you’re in love with Belle?” Adam says.
Sersel looks sideways as he sighs with his rising and falling shoulders.
“Yes. I love Belle. I cursed you, Adam, because I didn’t feel you deserved her and because I was jealous of your relationship with her.”
Adam squints at him in confusion.
“But. I don’t get it. Did you—know her—at some point? And what gives you the right to determine whether I deserve Belle or not and then interfere in our relationship, on top of that? Are you kidding me?”
“You are right. I had no right to interfere in your relationship with her, no matter how I felt about you and her choice to be with you.”
They are surprised by his non-defensive, sincere response.
“And you are correct. I did know her.”
His voice takes on a sentimental, warm yet forlorn quality as he goes on.
“In fact, I’d come to know her, very well before she met you. She was once close to my heart and I was once close to hers. But I wiped away her memories of that time.”
He looks at Gaston.
“By the way. I didn’t believe you deserved her, either.”
While Adam seems alarmed by Sersel’s revelation to him, Gaston folds his arms and cocks out his knee but appears shockingly unoffended by his last words.
“Well, truth be told, from the little Belle said about that version of me, I’d have to agree with you, Sersel.”
Adam follows Gaston, his eyebrows crinkled.
“But if you loved her so deeply—why would you go so far as to wipe her memories away of that time and her love for you, along with it? And why even create this curse? Why not simply return her memories of you, to her? I’m sure the other me wouldn’t like it, too much but—”
He places his hand on Gaston’s shoulder which causes Gaston to questioningly look at him.
“This me would rather be with Gaston, anyway.”
Gaston’s breath leaves his lungs while Sersel stares at him, speechlessly.
This is not something he’d considered enough with the casting of this spell.
The truth is, there’s so many things Sersel hadn’t considered or considered enough.
He was so desperate and heedless in his desire to keep the foul-tempered, pretentious Adam away from Belle and to simply punish Gaston for being the giant pile of chauvinist, rotten, conceited cow dung that he was, that he just hastily cast the curse without much forethought.
Now, he is being faced with a bit of a conundrum.
No matter what decision he makes, he will still end up hurting at least, one version of Gaston and Adam along with hurting both versions of Belle, more than he’d already done before this curse.
He shakes his head as despair and self-loathing, creeps into him.
What have I done? Dammit! What have I done?
Adam speaks up, again.
“Oh! And since we’re being so forthcoming with answers, right now. May I ask, why you allowed Belle to keep all her former memories? I’d been wondering about that a lot. You know it would’ve made it a lot easier for you in this reality, had you not. Or you could’ve even given her false memories that she was always in love with you. That could’ve worked, too.”
Gaston stares at him in pointed, disapproving disbelief, as if letting him know that he should be way more empathetic when it comes to what’s best for Belle.
“Whaaat!” Adam lightheartedly titters, staring back at him.
Sersel seems somber and faraway before he looks up at them.
“I cannot return her former memories of me without there being the risk of her hating me, instead of falling back in love with me. This is partly why I chose this curse, instead. However, she was supposed to lose her memories of the rest of her former life. I do not know why or how they remained.”
Gaston examines his face.
“What the hell did you do to her that she would hate you, if you returned those memories to her?” he says.
Sersel’s eyes remain lowered for a time.
“I made a big mistake with all of this. Now, I must do what is in the best interest of everyone involved, not just myself. I am sorry.”
Adam and Gaston’s eyes both widen at those last words.
They subconsciously clasp hands.
Adam speaks up.
“Th-there has to be a way to give Belle, us and you, a happy end—”
With Gaston and Adam jerking back, Sersel’s outstretched hand and arm flies up while he bows his head, looks sideways and grimaces with his emotional anguish.
“I sincerely apologize—for everything,” he shakily tells them.
Adam puts his hand out, as if saying stop.
“Sersel, wait!”
