___________________________________Chapter 6:
The morning had come, and we were heading out. Lard Nar was taking us in his ship part of the way there since it had a warp drive and would be faster. We'd have to go the rest of the way in the Shuvver since we didn't want Lard Nar's ship to be noticed by any Irken patrols. Lard Nar had helpfully given Zim and I some translators of our own, plus an extra one for Rad Na once we got him. The plan was to meet back up with the Resisty ship after we'd succeeded, after that, we'd head back to Voon to restock our food and then we'd head on back to Earth. If we didn't succeed, though... Well, there was no rescue plan in place. It was understood that if we failed and were captured, we were on our own. Lard Nar just couldn't risk his whole crew to come save us. I understood and didn't hold it against him.
Finally, after about a few hours of travel, we reached the point where Lard Nar didn't feel it was safe to go any farther. We bid the crew farewell and boarded our Shuvver ship. Now that we were on our own, it'd take about 2 days to reach Vort. Now that it had come down to it, the happy mood from the diner the other day was quickly evaporating, being replaced by a feeling of seriousness and even a bit of fear. Although we had planned well, this mission was still quite dangerous. If we failed, we'd probably be killed. I'd almost wished I hadn't lied to Dad and Gaz about what we were doing. Imagine if I died on some foreign planet and Dad waited forever for me to return, never knowing what happened to his son...
"Dib..." Zim said quietly, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Huh?" I replied. "I - I have something for you. A little present..." he said as he pulled something out of his pocket. He handed me a small black choker necklace. Hanging from the stiff plastic necklace was a small black faceted glass heart pendant. It looked like it was hollow, almost like a bottle, and sealed at the top with some sort of black resin. "Zim, this is a pretty necklace, but it seems hollow..." "Yes, it is hollow," he replied. "It's full of cyanide, a deadly poison - enough to kill you 20 times over. It's a...practical gift. If you're captured and they decide to torture you to death, you can bite off the resin and drink the little bottle. Then they won't be able to hurt you anymore..." Zim's admission had suddenly turned the atmosphere from anxious to absolutely grim. I held the tiny glass heart in my hand. It was so beautiful, and yet, so deadly... This gift seemed so ghastly but I knew that it truly represented Zim's love for me; he didn't want me to suffer. "Thank you, Zim," I said quietly. "I appreciate the gesture, but I hope I never have to use this..." "I hope so, too, Dib," he replied, "but at least you have options now." I placed the necklace around my neck.
We didn't say much after that. I guess both of us were quietly reflecting on the seriousness of what we were about to do. Soon enough, the planet Vort came into view. I put on my hologram disguise and Zim put in some purple contacts. I placed the spare hologram on the Rad Na robot and turned it on so that he looked like a shorter Irken. Zim navigated us down to the planet and to the prison and pulled the ship into the docking bay building. I sucked in a deep breath to try and quell my anxieties. "Okay, no fear. This is me without fear!" I said quietly to myself. We opened the ship door and stepped out into the docking bay. I saw a few Irkens walking back and forth as they went about their business and no one seemed to even take note of us. I guess we were doing alright blending in then. I walked to the exit doors, trying hard to look brisk and authoritative in my steps, but not walking so fast as to look nervous. Zim followed quietly behind me, adopting a submissive stance since I was clearly taller. The robot thankfully followed behind him, looking perfectly normal.
We left the docking bay building and went up to the prison building. I noticed a guard standing in front of the large entrance door, and I noted the bioscanner ringing the doorway, along with a terminal. "Gosh, Zim, security seems lax," I whispered to him in Irken. "It's always this way," he whispered back, "We rely more on our technology to keep the prisoners in place, so there's only ever minimal guards present. That way, we don't have to waste any extra man power." "Okay, Zim, I need you to distract that guard away from the door somehow so I can hack that terminal. I need at least five minutes for the program to download and activate." "I can manage that, just leave it to me" he said in reply. Zim walked back into the docking bay. I pulled out a tiny computer console, pressing some buttons and pretending to be busy. A few small Irkens were still milling about, and a few looked up at me in awe as they passed (perhaps Zim had made this hologram too attractive), but none of them dared speak to me. Soon I heard the sound of a small explosion and Zim came running out of the docking bay. "Help!" he yelled, "someone's engine has overheated and the docking bay's on fire!" The smaller Irkens panicked and ran into the building to help put out the fire, and the guard quickly joined them. Zim ran back in to assure that they were kept busy. Now was my chance. I sprinted over to the console while no one was outside and plugged my small computer into it. I quickly initiated the download sequence. My little hack should keep tell the console to recognize everything as Irken so we could easily pass through. However, it would only last one hour and then the program would discreetly delete itself. This would keep the guards from noticing anything unusual, hopefully. I tensely looked around, but no one was outside as of yet. Good, just a few more seconds. YES! Complete! I pulled the cord out of the console and walked back over to my original position near the docking bay. I pretended to continue to be busy on my computer. After a few more minutes, the guard walked back out of the cargo bay with a few small Irkens filing back out as well. "Good thing we got that fire put out!" one of the small Irkens said to another. "I'm glad that wasn't my ship," the other Irken said in reply. The guard returned to his original post.
Zim walked back out and stood next to me. "Did you get it done?" he whispered. "Yep," I whispered back. I then put away my computer, and strode confidently up to the guard. Zim followed behind, and the cloaked robot followed as well. I stood up ramrod straight, and effected an arrogant expression befitting a commander of my height. "Commander Lood needs to see Prisoner 777," Zim announced. The guard glanced up at me, looking almost frightened. I glared down at him. "Yes, of course," he replied. "Please just step this way and down the left hall. Here, you'll need this keycard," he said, handing me a small square thing. He stepped aside, opening the door. I walked forward, praying the scanner let us through. Zim and the robot followed me, and the scanner dinged as we went through. No alarm buzzer. I felt such relief as we passed through and the door slid shut behind us. I walked down the hall, trying to look casual and yet purposeful. I glanced at the cells as we passed. Most of them were filled with Vortians as far as I could tell, but there were a few other alien species there as well. When we got to the end of the hall, I made a left turn. We passed a guard on our way, but he barely spared us a glance before moving on. The doors were conveniently labeled with numbers, so I just followed them on down to the 700s. This stretch of hall was thankfully empty of any guards. I stopped at door 777. I held my keycard to the door's scanner and it slid open. All three of us stepped into the cell where Rad Na was cowering in the corner. He looked terrified. "Psst," I whispered to him in Irken, "Don't be afraid, it's us. We've come to rescue you." "Oh!" he whispered back, "that's great!" "So, my plan is just to switch you out with this robot," I said, gesturing to the "Irken" behind me. "I trust you've taken care of the bioscanner?" he asked. "Yes, it's all taken care of." "Well, what about the chip in my shoulder?" he said. "Huh? What chip?" Zim asked. Rad Na's face changed from hopeful to worried. "There's a chip implanted in my shoulder that'll release a neurotoxin if I pass the scanner without clearance. They started using them after too many prisoners escaped the bioscanners by hiding in laundry baskets. The scanners can't recognize your signature if you're surrounded by too much thickness, you see..." he trailed off. My mind was racing now. I hadn't foreseen this problem. What do we do about this?! I suddenly remembered the knife in my boot. Ugh, I didn't want to do this to poor Rad Na, but it might be the only way. "Um, I hate to do this to you," I said to Rad Na, "but I might need to cut that chip out of you." He looked fearful, but then nodded. "If it'll get me out of here, I can withstand a bit of pain," he said. I pulled the knife out of my boot and removed it from it's sheath. "Zim, I need something... Maybe your glove?" Zim looked momentarily confused before recognition dawned on his face. He pulled his glove off and handed it to me. I gave it to Rad Na. "Here, bite down on this to muffle any screams you might make. This is gonna hurt..." Rad Na placed the glove in his mouth, and offered his shoulder to me. I felt around until I noticed a hard squarish thing. "Is this it?" I asked. He nodded yes. I pressed the knife to it, using the button on the hilt to turn on the cauterizing function. He whimpered in pain as I cut into him. I tried very hard to go as quickly as I could, the knife's heat was causing his blood to sizzle around the cut. I quickly cut the chip out of his shoulder. Overall, Rad Na had done a very good job of stifling his screams. I pressed the side of the hot blade to the open wound to help staunch any bleeding. He whimpered some more and I felt terrible about this. Finally, it was done, and we had managed not to spill any blood on the cell floor. I picked up the chip and flushed it down the toilet in the corner.
Whew, at least the hardest part was done. "Okay, Rad Na, you just need to wear this cloaking device and you'll be set to follow us out." I turned off the cloaking device on the robot, revealing an exact duplicate of Rad Na. His eyes widened when he saw it. "That's a remarkable copy!" he said in awe. "Yeah, we made it to replace you so the guards won't notice you're gone," I replied. I handed him its cloaking device and he put it on, turning it on. He looked just like the smaller Irken now. "Okay," Zim whispered, "now we just need to leave. Just follow us and act natural." I waved the key card back over the inside terminal and the door slid open again. I walked out, followed by Zim and a cloaked Rad Na. We walked down the hall and back to the entrance without incident. As we passed through the entrance and back outside, I stopped and handed the guard his keycard back, nodding curtly. He took it and saluted me as I left. I kept our pace deliberately even as we walked back to the docking bay, even though I felt like running just to get out of this place. We finally reached our ship and boarded and I let out a sigh of relief. Rad Na seemed especially relieved as well. Zim took the controls, lifting us out of park and out of the top entrance of the building.
It wasn't until we had left Vort far behind that I felt truly relieved. I turned off my hologram disguise, while Rad Na did the same. Zim pulled out his contacts and set them back in their case. "YES! We did it!" I exclaimed happily, hugging Zim in the process. Rad Na was looking at us, a bit confused. Oh, that's right! None of us were wearing translators and Rad Na didn't speak English. I handed him a translator, which he seemed to instantly recognize, while Zim and I put on our own. It fit rather snugly on my wrist like a watch. I turned back to Rad Na. "I'm really sorry I had to cut you open like that," I apologized to him. "Oh, that's alright! I'm just so excited that I've been rescued! This is wonderful! Thank you so much," he said to me in what seemed like English. I actually walked forward and hugged him, which caused him to squeak in surprise. "Oh, and Zim, I didn't even recognize you with those contacts in. My, you've grown over the years!" he said to Zim. Zim beamed at the compliment and replied, "Yes, I sure have!" "So, where are we going now?" Rad Na asked us. "We're heading back to the Resisty ship. You're friend Lard Nar is waiting for you." I replied. Rad Na seemed really happy at this news, and ran up to hug me again. He even ran over to Zim and hugged him. Zim balked at the hug and pushed him off. That didn't seem to dampen Rad Na's enthusiasm at all.
Over the next two days the three of us talked with one another. There was a lot of catching up to do. Zim and I explained how we managed to pull off this rescue and how we'd worked with Lard Nar to do it. Zim talked about making a pak for me and Lard Nar seemed to think he could pull it off successfully. Eventually I even told Rad Na the story of how Zim and I got to be lovers, and he seemed just as surprised as Lard Nar had been.
After the two days had passed, we spotted the Resisty ship once more, just where they'd promised to be. We docked our ship alongside them and beamed aboard. As soon as Rad Na saw Lard Nar, they ran up to each other, hugging each other tightly. Lard Nar even seemed to have little tears in his eyes. They finally pulled away from each other. Lard Nar turned to Zim and I. "I want to thank you both, from the bottom of my hear, for bringing him back to me. We'd be more than happy to help you build that pak you wanted." "You're welcome!" I said brightly. "Now, if you don't mind, you'll have to excuse us for awhile. We have a lot of catching up to do," Lard Nar said as he shuffled Rad Na back towards the rear hallway.
A tall alien with four arms approached us. "Hi! My name's Spleenk and I just wanted to say 'thank you'. I wasn't sure I could trust you guys before but now I'm convinced that you guys are great!" I smiled and nodded. "You're welcome," Zim said. The crew erupted into cheers. "So," Spleenk asked, "Where you guys want to go now?" "Well," I replied, "Could you take us back to Voon? I really want to eat at Blortney's Food Place one more time before we leave, plus it'll give us a chance to restock our food supplies." "Oh, sure, no problem!" Spleenk said. "Besides, Blortney's has great food. You have great taste!" "Setting a course for Voon," said an alien in a purple cloak that was sitting at the navigator's panel. I noticed a second alien in a purple cloak that was sitting near the first one at an adjacent console. It looked like they were the navigator and weapons specialist, respectively, judging by the consoles' positions. All that time reading ship schematics from the Irken database hadn't been wasted on me!
After a few hours, we landed back on Voon. We stepped back out into the fresh air and I sighed. It felt good to be back here again. I couldn't believe we'd actually succeeded! "Hey Zim, I want to go back to Blortney's." "Fine with me," he said cheerfully. He took my hand and we walked at a pleasant stroll down the street. I really noticed all the happy people going about their daily lives. The city itself really was beautiful, all shiny and new-looking, so unlike the crumbling filthy streets of New York. As we walked, a few of the citizens, even waved at us. I smiled and waved back, nudging Zim until he waved too. It seemed that news of our exploits had traveled quickly since the citizenry seemed far more comfortable with us now.
Soon I saw the familiar storefront of Blortney's come into view and I rushed inside, pulling Zim with me. I sat down at the same booth we'd used last time. Zim picked up the menu tablet and I did the same. I immediately scrolled to the Vortian section, remembering what happened before. I wanted something different this time though. Hmm... I eyed an entry called "Voon Fish". I read the description: "Locally caught fresh fish, marinaded in Choola juice and grilled over a bed of delicious Frusk leaves. Served with a side of assorted grilled vegetables." It seemed that Vortians had a thing for grilled foods. That was fine by me! "Hey Zim, what're you having?" "The same thing as last time," he replied. "Oh, why? That's boring..." I said, making a face. "Well, I really want a chance to eat fresh Moosh cakes one last time before we have to go back to Earth." "Oh, I understand..." I replied. I pushed the green button to call the waiter, and a few minutes later that same six-legged grey alien that we saw last time skittered out. "Oh!" it said in surprise, "I didn't expect to see you two back again! Are you guys going to stay here permanently?" "Oh, no," I said, "we have to go back to Earth soon..." "Oh, that's too bad. I heard about you guys rescuing Rad Na, and we're really grateful. I thought you might be joining us here on Voon. Well, anyway, I'll take your orders now. What do you want?" We gave the waiter our orders and he (or it?) skittered back to the back room.
Zim and I sat in companionable silence as we waited for our food to be ready. I couldn't help but think that this was a pretty place and that I'd miss it. It was really nice being able to just sit down in a restaurant with Zim being himself, no disguises, no pretenses, no bullshit getting in the way. We could be openly gay here and no one cared. Just the two of us, being ourselves. I sighed. "Zim, I like this place. I wish we could live here; it's nice." He looked up at me. "You know what," he said, "I like it here too. I don't see why we couldn't live here. I think it's obvious that we'd be welcome here. Plus, it'll be easier for Rad Na and I to work on your pak if we can do it face to face." The thought of living here happily for the rest of our days was so alluring... "Oh, but Zim, what about my Dad? I don't know if he'd be happy if I moved so far away." Zim seemed to ponder for a minute or two. "Well, Dib, I guess we'll just have to talk to him to find out. That's really the only way." "Yeah, let's see if we can convince him..." Soon our food was brought out and I dug in to my fish. It was really quite delicious! Zim stuffed his face with Moosh cakes. After we finished up our meal, we headed back to our ship.
Lard Nar was hanging around, just finishing up the last bit of supply loading. "Hey, Lard Nar!" I greeted him, "Can I talk to you?" He set down the box he was carrying. "Sure thing, Dib. What do you want?" "Well, Zim and I were wondering if it'd be okay if we joined you guys and lived here? It's a nice place, and we rather like it..." I held my breath as I waited for him to answer. He pondered for a bit before he spoke. "Well, I am rather grateful to you for rescuing Rad Na for me, and we could definitely use two people of your skills here so I could certainly offer you both employment, so I'd have to say yes." I let out the breath I'd been holding. "Even me?" Zim piped up. Lard Nar chuckled, "Yes, Zim, even you." "Awesome!" I said, "ah, but first we have to go back to Earth so I can talk to my family about this. Plus, we need to get our stuff and bring it here." Lard Nar nodded. "Of course, I understand. Well, I look forward to seeing you again." He waved goodbye as he walked off.
Zim and I headed into the ship for the night to get some sleep. Once the morning hit, we headed back to Earth. The four day trip seemed to go by quicker this time than it had when we had first set out.
____________________________________________________Once we got back home to our familiar base, I headed back down to my bedroom. I pulled out my communicator and called Gaz but she didn't answer. So, I called the number of the Bloaty's that she worked at. "Hello, this is Bloaty's Pizza Place. I'll take your order, if I feel like it..." I had to laugh at her monotone voice. "Hey Gaz, it's me." "DIB?! My God you've been gone a long time! What have you been up to?" "Well, I went to a planet called Voon and it's nice and anyway, I need to see you and Dad because I've got something to tell you guys." "Wait, wait a minute, Dib, I can't really talk right now I'm supposed to be working. I'll talk to Dad once I get a chance and I'll arrange a little get-together, alright?" "Okay, Gaz, that's great. See ya!" I hung up the communicator so she wouldn't get in trouble with her boss.
I waited until night time before Gaz called me back. She had indeed gotten a hold of Dad and he said he could see us this weekend. Now I only needed to wait three days. Good, that gives me time to pack up all my stuff. Yeah, I know it seems a bit mean to pack before he'd even been told I was leaving, but to be honest, I was going to leave whether he liked it or not. The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't stand the thought of living in this place the rest of my life.
Packing was quite an odd experience since it seemed like Zim really didn't have anything to pack. I didn't really have all that much stuff, but Zim had even less stuff. It seemed like all the things he had and used were built into the structure of the base itself. As Zim explained to me, once we were ready to go and had all our personal belongings and ships out of the base, he'd have the base self-destruct, and then when we got to our new home, it would rebuild itself. We just had to be careful and remove everything that wasn't originally part of the base or it'd be destroyed during the self-destruct.
After packing was done, the weekend came soon enough. Zim and I headed over to Dad's house for what could possibly be the last time in a very long time. I stepped up to the door and knocked. Gaz opened the door and gestured us inside. Dad was standing off to the side, apparently waiting for me. "Hey Dad!" I greeted. "Hello, son!" he replied warmly pulling me into a hug. He turned to hug Zim as well, but Zim backed away and hid behind me until Dad gave up on that. Gaz stared at me for a minute or two. "Dib, what happened to your hair? You look like a rabid gopher attacked your head." I laughed. "Oh, well, my hair got too long so I cut it...rather poorly." "I see that..." Dad said in response. We stood in awkward silence for a bit.
"So, son, how was your vacation? You guys sure were gone a long time..." Dad said. "Oh, it was great! We poked around the stars, and I made some new friends and we got to see a really cool planet called Voon. I also ate a steak and a fish!" Dad was nodding this whole time as though this disjointed story made sense. Zim was standing off to the side, looking rather aloof and not saying anything. "So, I think you told Gaz you had something to tell us," Dad finally said. I took a deep breath, unsure of exactly how to break this. "Well, Dad... I got a new job..." My Dad perked right up. "That's great, son!" "BUT-" I interjected, "it's on Voon. Which means I'd be moving to that planet to live permanently." Dad looked so crestfallen it hurt. "Oh.... Well, oh, um, what sort of job is it?" he asked. "As an engineer/scientist. Just like you've always wanted," I told him. It was a bit of a fib, as I'm not really sure how true the 'scientist' part would be, but I'd certainly be an engineer of some sort... I could tell from the expression on Dad's face that he seemed torn. On the one hand, he'd always wanted me to get a job as a scientist, but on the other hand, now I'd be moving away... Zim finally spoke up, "It's a very nice planet, Dib-father. It's got air and stuff, and the people who live there are very nice to us. They don't care that Dib's gay or that I'm Irken..." I could see a sort of acceptance flash across Dad's face as he carefully thought on Zim's words. "Yes... I suppose it's best you live somewhere you can be happy," he said quietly, "but will I ever see you again?" I smiled at him as brightly as I could. "Of course, Dad! It's only a four day trip by ship to get back here. I'm certainly gonna come back to visit you guys, at least once a year." This seemed to lift his mood considerably. "Well, I support your decision, son. I wish you the best in your new life. Keep in touch." "I will, Dad. There might be a bit of delay in the communications I send, but I'll send you guys some interstellar emails occasionally to keep you updated."
We talked the rest of the night and I told them about our little 'vacation', leaving out the parts about dangerous prison breaks. Soon the daylight was wearing away, and I bid them goodbye. Dad hugged me as I was leaving, and even Gaz pulled me into an embrace. It might have been the lighting, but she almost looked uncharacteristically sad. I waved as I walked out the door, with Dad and Gaz waving behind me. Zim and I trudged back to the base, and though I couldn't speak for him, I felt both happy and sad. Of course, it's not like I was leaving forever, I'd come visit at least at Christmas. That thought cheered me up a bit. Once we got home, Zim turned to me. "So, Dib, when do you want to leave?" I thought for a moment. "Well, I was thinking we could get a good night's sleep, then leave in the morning." Zim nodded. "Sounds good to me." We went down to my room for our last night in this old house, on this old planet...
_____________________________________________________Once we'd gotten back to Voon, Lard Nar gave us an empty spot to put our house. Zim and I stood in front of the empty lot, which was towards the edge of the city. From here, there were only a few scattered buildings before the city ended rather abruptly on the edge of farmland. Beyond that, just on the edge of the horizon, there was forest not unlike what one might find on Earth.
I looked over to Zim, who was fiddling with the base capsule console. "Hey, Zim, can the design of the house be altered?" Zim looked up at me. "Sure, Dib. Did you need some extra underground rooms?" "Oh, no Zim. It's not the underground part I want to change. I want to change the roof." "The roof? Why?" he questioned. "I'm thinking that the view would be beautiful from here, so it'd be cool to have a flat roof that we could go up to, you know, to lounge and stuff." Zim looked at me like I was crazy. "View? You wanna stare at stuff all day?" I almost laughed at the irony of someone who spent almost all day staring at consoles questioning my desire to stare at nice stuff. "Yeah, Zim, it'd be nice." He shrugged his shoulders. "Eh, okay Dib. This lot is so big I can just put in a docking bay for our ships off to the side anyways. Anything else you want?" I thought for a moment. "Yeah, Zim. I think I want my bedroom above ground. Let's make this a two story house with proper bedrooms and bathrooms above ground. Of course, you can keep your labs below ground, and your bedroom too, if you want..." He squinted one eye at me. "You know what, Dib? I don't think I need a separate bedroom anymore... I've grown rather used to sleeping with you. Although I might put a small bed in downstairs in case I need to take a nap." I smiled at him. "Alright, then Zim, it's settled. Just one more thing." Zim shot me a questioning look. "Get rid of that toilet in the kitchen."
Zim finished doing his new plans and released the little base capsule. It burrowed into the ground and slowly I watched the new house knit itself together. Nanomachine technology was truly amazing. True to my request, there was a flat roof with a small concrete-looking railing all the way around, and it was even complete with what looked like patio furniture. Zim's time on Earth had apparently improved his knowledge of human dwellings. The house still retained it's garish green paint job, but over the years I had grown fond of it, so I didn't mind. "It looks beautiful, Zim. Thanks." He smiled brightly at me for the praise. "C'mon, Dib," he said with a wave, "let's go check out the inside."
I headed inside with Zim, and it was definitely a big improvement over the original. Gone was the weird toilet and awkward hidden elevator. Now the elevator was built right into the wall and looked just like what it was. In addition, there was now a staircase off to the side of the redesigned living room. As I looked around at the new house, Zim tapped the button on his wrist communicator. "Gir, start bringing our boxes into the house," he ordered. Yes, we'll let the little robot bring our stuff in. "Hey Zim, let's check out the roof." He groaned. "Why Dib? It's gonna be boring. There's nothing up there but roof. I don't mind if you want to stare at roof at day, but why do I have to come too?" I pouted. "Please, Zim? It'd make me happy." He finally caved in and threw up his hands. "Fine Dib, I'll do it for you, but only because you're my partner and you're taller than me." I grinned at him and ran up the stairs in my excitement, Zim trudging along behind. I passed the second floor with my new bedroom, bathroom, and a spare bedroom, and on down the hall to a second staircase. I bounded up that one too, opening the door at the end to reveal the roof patio.
I walked over the edge of the railing, looking out over the expansive farmland. If I squinted, I could even make out the little robots who were tending the fields. Past that, I could see the edge of a lush forest. It was breathtaking. I turned to the opposite side of the roof. From that edge, one could look out over the sprawling expanse of the shiny new city. The juxtaposition of nature and technology on display felt oddly soothing. I finally turned to look at Zim, who to the contrary of his earlier claims, didn't look bored at all. He seemed to be just as awestruck as I was, in fact.
"Wow, Dib, it really isn't as boring and 'roof-y' up here as I thought it would be." I smiled at him. "Ooh, you know what, we should just sit on this patio furniture and drink some hot chocolate and watch the sunset. That'd be quite relaxing," I suggested. Zim just nodded mutely, still staring out wide-eyed over the expansive rolling fields of farmland. I walked back downstairs to the kitchen, and fixed us some hot chocolate with some simple packets. Eventually, I'd run out of the stock of food I'd brought from Earth and I'd have to fully adapt to the food here, but I'm sure I'll get used to it... I carried our hot chocolate back up the stairs and out onto the roof. I set them down on the patio table. Zim was already laying in one of the comfy-looking cushioned patio recliners, just staring out at the fields and sky. I'd never seen Zim look so calm and, dare I say it, Zen-like before. I sat down in the lounge chair next to him, taking a sip of my hot chocolate. Wow, this chair was really cushy and soft. It almost felt like memory foam or something similar, but I wasn't sure... Zim was laying very comfortably on it, his pak having sank into the cushions. After I was done inspecting the chair, I looked towards the horizon. The sun was setting, and the sky was turning a beautiful shade of streaked orange and pink, with hints of blue and purple at the edges of the sun's rays. No wonder Zim was staring.
Zim finally turned to his hot chocolate, picking it up and taking a sip. "Dib...Have you ever really watched a sunset?" "No, I can't say I really have. I've seen more computer wallpapers of sunsets than I've actually seen real ones." Zim nodded. "Yeah, Dib, I know what you mean. Irkens spend a lot of time underground or working inside buildings and ships. Did you know this is first time I've ever watched a sunset?" I looked toward Zim; the myriad colors of the sunset were reflected in his ruby eyes. I watched the reflection of the sun as it slid completely behind the horizon. Soon, the stars started to become visible one by one, until the sky filled with an entire constellation of stars, familiar yet foreign. "Yeah, Zim, it sure is beautiful..." I said in hushed tones. He turned to me. "Dib! You're supposed to be watching the sunset, not staring at my head!" I laughed out loud. "Actually, Zim, I was watching the sunset. I can see the whole sky reflected in your gorgeous eyes..." He seemed to squirm and blush uncomfortably from my compliment. "Oh, Dib, don't be silly, I'm not that attractive. I mean, I'm just average-looking for an Irken, and my red eyes are the most common and boring color on Irk..."
I got up and sat down over him, straddling his waist. I bent over him and stared deep into those crimson orbs. "Zim, you're absolutely beautiful to me," I said as I kissed him softly on the lips. He just stared up at me for a few moment, his expression unreadable, but soon he wrapped his arms around my torso, pulling me down into a more heated kiss. We broke after the need for air became intolerable. "Dib, mount me - out here, under the stars..." "My pleasure," I said with a smile. I started kissing him again while trying to work our clothes off. Even though I got our pants off, we had to break our fevered kissing to remove the shirts. I lay back down on top of him, positioning myself between his thighs, both of us nude to the stars. I returned to our sweet kisses, and I could feel Zim's hands sliding up and down my back as his hardness pressed into my stomach. I reached a hand up to stroke at his antenna, moving slowly and steadily. Soon he was panting and moaning. I felt him pull away from my lips. "Dib...Take me now. Please..." he whispered. I reached down to his penis, gathering some of his copious lubricant. I spread it on myself, them pressed into Zim's tight entrance. He groaned out, but then wrapped his legs around my waist, driving me in all the way. He spoke breathily, "You know what, Dib? There's something so beautiful about you being inside me. It feels so perfect." "Yeah..." I answered back. Then I started to move, thrusting in and out in a steady pace. Zim clenched around me, moaning softly, as he used his legs to push me in with each thrust. I tried to keep my pace slow and make this last as long as possible, but all too soon I could feel us both growing desperate. Eventually, Zim tensed and released, whimpering loudly. I couldn't hold it back any longer after that, and I too, released my warm fluids into Zim. I heard Zim sigh not too long afterwards.
We lay there for a few minutes afterwards, the night air was gently warm around us. I lay on top of Zim, just listening to his breathing even out. A strange thought occurred to me: I was happy. It's not that I'd never been happy before, but this was the first time I'd ever really stopped to recognize it. I was happy. This moment, this feeling, it was perfect. I laid there, savoring this feeling. After a few minutes, though, it became apparent that the air was growing a bit chillier, and the wind was starting to pick up. "C'mon Zim, we should go to bed now." "Alright, Dib, sounds good to me." We left the patio and went back downstairs to our bedroom. We settled into bed, not even bothering to shower, and drifted off to sleep.
____________________________________________________Over the next couple weeks, Lard Nar put both of us right to work. Zim was to help him work on making weapons and defenses for their main ship, as well as constructing more ships for what Lard Nar hoped would be an eventual fleet to combat the Irken Empire. I was working primarily on programming the defense grid, which was a series of sensors that would detect incoming ships, both friend and foe. Aside from that, it always seemed like there was something that needed fixing, from the agricultural robots to the city's energy system. All in all, it kept me quite busy.
Aside from his official job as an engineer, Zim was busy spending his time working with both Lard Nar and Rad Na to make a pak for me. At first Zim was quite convinced that it would be very cool for me to have my own spider legs and other such built-in functions, but Rad Na talked him out of it. Since I hadn't had a pak from birth, it'd be very hard for my adult brain to adjust to being able to control additional artificial limbs like that, so Zim finally relented. The pak would be smaller than a normal Irken pak, and merely handle memory backup/transfer, life extension, and regeneration abilities. As cool as spider legs would be, this was fine by me. With the two Vortians' help plus the data on human physiology Zim had gathered back on Earth, the work on the pak went much faster. After a few months had passed, Zim informed me that it was completed, and that there was only a few more tests to conduct, and it'd be ready for implant.
___________________________________________________I was standing on the roof patio today since it was such a lovely day outside. Ever since Zim and I had made love up here, it had become my favorite spot in the entire house and I often spent my free time just lounging with my laptop out here. I had added a few plants in large pots to the roof since I figured it looked a bit empty up here. It's funny, I had never had an interest in gardening back on Earth, but now I took great joy in tending to my many pots of plants. Many of them were actually vegetables that I could eat once they got ripe, but most of them were just flowers. They made the whole roof look just beautiful. Even Zim admitted that it was prettier up here now that I had added my little garden.
I walked around with a pail, watering my Ecca plant. The fruits on the Ecca Vine would probably be ripe in a week or two. It didn't really taste of fruit though, it tasted much more like eggplant, and I considered it more of a vegetable really. I finished that up, then walked around watering all my flowers. Everything was doing well in Voon's mild temperate, but sunny climate. There, done!
Suddenly, my communicator started beeping. I pulled it out of my pocket and answered. "Hey Dib!" said a familiar voice. Zim's face appeared on-screen. "Hey Zim! How's it going up there?" Zim was currently aboard the Resisty flagship, helping Lard Nar with the generator. Lard Nar often kept the large ship orbiting the planet so they could keep on eye out for enemy vessels. "I'm doing great!" Zim answered, "I wanted to tell you that Rad Na and I have finished our work on your pak and we're planning to install it later, so meet me in Rad Na's lab." I nodded, "Yeah, I know where it is. When do you want me to be there?" "Hmm... I get off work this afternoon and I'll be taking the Voot Cruiser back planetside, so meet me there around 6 pm?" "Okay, Zim, I'll be there. I hope this goes well." "Yeah, me too..." Zim replied. He waved bye and ended communications. Well, it seems like the big day has come!
I waited anxiously until the afternoon, then made my way over to Rad Na's labs on my hover scooter (another gift from Zim; useful since some of the streets were a bit narrow). I parked outside and made my way into the front lobby. Unlike Zim's underground personal labs, this building was being working in by several different people. I walked up to the receptionist, who appeared to be the same species as the waiter from Blortney's, which I had since learned were called Flooboids, and that gender could by distinguished by eye color. This one was clearly female since her eyes were green instead of brown; her nametag read 'Sochey'. "Excuse me, Miss, I believe Rad Na is expecting me." She looked down at her computer. "Why, yes, he is, right down the hall to the right," she said as she pointed. I headed on down the hall, already familiar with the location. I'd been here dozens of times before for my job.
I knocked on his door, and Rad Na opened it. Zim was already inside, looking rather worried, a complete 180 from his earlier demeanor. "Hey Dib!" Zim greeted me, running up to me rather expectantly. "Hey, we finished your pak, and we both think that we've done all the tests we could possibly do, and that there's nothing left to do but try it..." Zim trailed off, and I could tell he was quite worried about this. "We've taken every precaution possible, but there's still a chance things could go wrong..." Rad Na said. I looked over to the operating table, and there sat my pak. It was quite a bit smaller than Zim's, only about the size of my fist, and instead of pink spots it had blue spots. Zim noticed me inspecting it. "Heh, yeah, it's smaller than mine because it only handles memories and life support," Zim said. "Okay, guys," I said to them both, "what's gonna happen now?" "Well, now we put you to sleep, conduct the surgery, then you wake up later fully recovered...hopefully," Rad Na said. Zim shot him a nasty look for that last part. "You'll be fine, Dib, don't you worry!" Zim proclaimed, his false bravado showing through. "Okay, guys, let's do it!" I said as I took my shirt off and got onto the table. Rad Na hooked me up to an I.V. and soon the anesthetic made me quite sleepy. I drifted off to sleep after a few minutes...
I awoke some time later, blinking up at Zim's worried face. I noticed that I was on my stomach, my face laying sideways. "Ugh...Zim? Am I alive?" "Yes! Yes, you are! Of which I am glad!" he said excitedly. Zim ran over to the intercom button on the wall and pressed it. "Get in here, Rad Na! He's awake!" A few minutes later, Rad Na burst into the room. "How do you feel?" the little Vortian asked.
"My head hurts a bit," I answered truthfully. "That'd be the anesthetic," Rad Na pointed out. They had me sit up, then tested all my reflexes, motor skills, and cognition. I seemed to be totally fine. "Dib, can you feel the pak? Does it hurt?" Zim asked. "No," I answered, "in fact, I can't even feel it at all. Is it really there?" "Yep, it sure is! Just look at the mirror," Zim said, pointing. I walked over to the mirror, twisting my head around to get a look. Indeed, the little blue pak was there, right on the upper part of my back. I smiled; it was rather cute... "So, doc," I said to Rad Na, "Am I good to go home now?" "Well, yes," he answered, "since you're awake and appear to be totally fine, the most dangerous part has passed. I'd say you're safe to go home." "Awesome!" I said, "Thanks for everything!" He nodded as I left with Zim in tow.Zim and I got home with no incident, and we decided to have a nice cup of hot chocolate on the roof before going to bed. I sat down in the recliner and to my surprise, the very small pak didn't dig into my spine at all as I laid back. In fact, I didn't really feel it at all. Zim sat down in his recliner, just looking up at the starry night sky as he drank from his cup. I sipped at my hot chocolate too. This place really was great, I'm so glad we moved here. Zim seemed happier and more fulfilled here as well. "Hey Zim, do you like it here?" "Yeah, it's great. I feel better than I have in a long time..." he said. "Yeah, me too," I answered, "But do you think it can last forever? I mean, it's only a matter of time before the Irken Empire comes here to confront us." Zim looked a bit sad at that statement. "Yeah, even if the Resisty never directly draws their attention, it's only a matter of time before they come here to conquer this planet anyways. We always conquer everything... There may come a time when we'll need to actively fight with the Resisty to defend this place," he said. "Let's not worry about that for now, Zim," I said reassuringly, "We should just try to settle in here and enjoy our lives for now. We'll worry about that stuff when the time comes." Zim sighed and nodded, and went back to his hot chocolate. I continued drinking mine too, enjoying the jeweled canopy that made up the expansive night sky...

End of Chapter!
Author Note: I bet you guys all want a rooftop patio now! Yeah, me too... Oh, and I wrote a small side story featuring Lard Nar and Rad Na, called "A Little Bit of Vortian Love..." that details exactly what they did right after they were reunited. So go check that out if you are interested.
