Schwenk sat on the bed, sipping his whiskey. He felt wretched, handing over a fellow human being to a horrible death. "What sort of human am I?" he wondered. Now, there were Seekers on the case, this was terrible news.
Five hours later, the door knob to the apartment turned and Lumar slipped quietly inside; he was startled to see Schwenk still awake. "I thought you would have been asleep by now...” the huge tiger said guiltily.
"Can't really sleep...I'm sure you can probably guess why..."
Lumar's tail swished. "You're thinking about the Seekers that human mentioned..." he walked over to Schwenk and sat on the floor facing him. "What are you going to do?"
"I was thinking primarily about the human in your stomach actually, but yeah....Seekers...what do you know about them?"
Lumar glanced down at his big hands and began to wring them. "Ah come Schwenk I told you everything I know about the Sh'iars...what more can I tell you?" He grimaced becoming increasingly agitated.
"I can read you like a book....spill it, tiger!"
Lumar began to protest but one look at Schwenk's face told him the human was not in the mood for hearing his protests. "Okay...I lied to you before--there are three factions within the Sh'iar community: the priests, the warriors, and the Seekers. It is the Seekers’ job to keep watch over the Sh'iar priests--to protect them. I swear to you Schwenk that is all I know about them! It isn't customary for the Seekers to use humans so this is something new!"
"So this means they know we're involved....Fuck....How? How did they find out?"
"I-I don't know Schwenk...I honesty don't know!" The tiger gulped worriedly. "Does that mean they'll be coming for us? What are we going to do? Huh Schwenk--what?!"
The human pondered for a moment. "We do not panic...firstly....What about his remains?" he gestured to the door. "Where are they?"
Lumar regarded Schwenk stupidly, "What about his remains? Teegara bundled up what was left and stuck him in her freezer. She plans on making a stew especially with his entrails."
"OK, thanks...just reassurance it was dealt with would have been fine!" he paled. "What a fucking day!" he groaned. "I'm going to bed and pray for a better day tomorrow..."
"Schwenk...shall I stand guard...just in case?" The tiger asked. "I don't think that I could possibly sleep tonight."
"What good would you standing guard against the Sh’iar be?"
Lumar lowered his head. "Yes...I know you're right but as I told you before I will protect you until my last dying breath especially against them. They frighten me but I would die for you Schwenk...I owe you so much."
“Get some sleep....we'll be needing it..."
The tiger sighed knowing deep in his heart that he wouldn't be able to sleep...how could he knowing that they are being stalked by the Sh'iars? Somehow they found out they were responsible for the priest's death...Lumar gulped.
"...and don't even ask for the radiator side..."
"I won't...you're welcome to it Schwenk." The Beni replied listlessly; his eyes widened as a thought popped into his head. "What about Teegara Schwenk? Isn't she in danger? Have we not placed her in danger?!" Lumar leaped on the bed prodding the human...
“Who cares about her? She started this chain of events..."
"Well how was she supposed to know that the Seekers hired the human to locate us? I have got to warn her Schwenk!"
"No! You're here to look after me, not the whore....so leave her be!"
The tiger growled under his breath and flicked his tail in a distraught manner. "You are being unfair Schwenk...and she's not a whore; Teegara has always been good to me."
"Excuse my lack of compassion, but shut up and go to bed!" he snapped.
Lumar growled again, lay down on top of the sheets without removing his boots, and closed his eyes.
"Better..." Schwenk rolled over and faced the wall.
Despite his protests, Lumar fell into a deep and fitful sleep...he wriggled around in the bed thrashing his arms, legs, and tail about occasionally striking poor Schwenk. While he slept he thought he heard a high piercing shriek but dismissed this thinking it was probably someone's television set playing loudly in the apartment. He sighed and rolled over on top of Schwenk muttering.
"Fu......" he squeaked, three hundred and fifty pounds goes a long way on top of humans. "Lu......marrrrrr........"
The tiger's ears flickered and he rolled off of Schwenk; as he did so, his tail slammed down hard on the human's chest.
"Right!! That's it!!" he groaned and got up. He strode over to the sink, filled a pitcher with ice cold water and doused the tiger.
Lumar's reaction almost proved to be fatal to Schwenk--the tiger's emerald green eyes shot open, he roared, and immediately tackled the human slamming him to the ground. The big cat was within seconds of tearing Schwenk's throat open!
"NOOOO!" Schwenk screamed. He had no armour, he was naked and Lumar, in the raw was an awesome predator.
The tiger blinked back his surprise and quickly composed himself. "Wh-what?! Schwenk--why did you do that? You know how much I hate cold water...why did you throw it on me?" He backed off the human and sat back on his haunches.
"Well, first you crushed me and then whacked me with your tail....you know how much I hate those..."
"Why didn't you wake me instead? Schwenk, I could have hurt you! Are you all right?" Lumar grabbed the human and began to examine him carefully for any injuries.
"I tried, you idiot!" he retorted. "You were fast asleep..."
"You have to try harder next time Schwenk." Satisfied that his friend was in one piece, Lumar gave Schwenk a sloppy kiss again to the human's annoyance. "You know Schwenk I had a really strange dream...I thought I heard someone screaming..."
"Oh....you too?" he replied, wiping his cheek. "Uh oh..."
"Did you have the same dream too?" Lumar inquired worriedly. "You heard someone screaming?!"
"Maybe not a dream, dope..."
There were a din of excited voices coming from outside the apartment, it sounded like a gathering crowd; Lumar and Schwenk exchanged looks. "Schwenk, I'm scared!" The tiger whispered.
"Scared? Don't be....you're a huge slab of meat and gristle..."
"Wh-what should we do? Should we see what's happening?"
"You can...I'm going back to bed!"
A flurry of knocks sounded at their door followed by shouting, "Schwenk, open up--it's your landlord! All tenants are being ordered out of the apartment onto the streets! Schwenk! Hey Lumar--are you two in there?!"
"Onto the streets?!" he looked at Lumar. "Hells bells....this is not good!"
"Schwenk--Lumar move your butts! The ThunderGuards say that all tenants should be outside as a safety precaution until they ensure the building is safe! Move it--NOW!"
"It's a trap, Lumie...The Seekers are flushing us out..." he chewed his nails. "Lumie...can you climb over the roofs...with me on your back?"
"You know I can Schwenk." The tiger acknowledged. "But do you think it is the work of the Seekers? Why would they go to all of this trouble?"
"More action, less chat..." he got dressed and opened the kitchen window. "Come on...we'll talk when we're safe..."
Lumar climbed out followed by Schwenk who then clambered onto the tiger's broad back. "Hold on tight!" He extended his claws and leapt upwards onto the roof. "Where are we going Schwenk?"
"You got friends in town?"
"Yeah I do...but you know my friends don't exactly like humans...However, they will hide us if I explain the situation. I think my uh girl, Cheebie would help...Um Schwenk...I've got to warn you, Cheebie is Teegara's friend...she knows about you."
"As long as Cheebie isn't as bad as the Seekers, we'll go there...maybe she'll warm to me..."
"Word of warning though Schwenk, Cheebie is a pick pocket and she's a cheetah meaning she is quite fast and an expert in her craft. She's a sweet kid but please don't say anything about her weight--okay?" Lumar begged as he leapt from roof top to roof top with the human.
"Weight? She a fatty then??"
The tiger groaned and twitched his whiskers. "She is plump okay?...She loves to eat--please don't say anything!"
"You know me, Lumie...ever the diplomat!"
"Yeah...right, I know." Lumar swung downwards landing in an alley; Schwenk climbed down happy to be on terra firma. "Follow me Schwenk, down this way..." The pair walked for a block and stopped before a run down motel. "Her place is in here..."
"Sweet digs, remember to introduce me..."
They entered; at the front desk, a cougar sat manning it watching a black and white television set. He scowled at Schwenk, "What the fuck is that monkey doing here?" he demanded directing his question to Lumar.
"Same mouth that kisses your mother?" Schwenk replied.
The cougar leapt out of his chair; Lumar stepped in front of Schwenk blocking him from the angry cougar. "He's with me...don't pay him any mind. Is Cheebie in?"
The cougar spat, "Yeah Lumar...she's in...I'll let her know you're here. I hope your monkey there is house trained."
"I only piss on inferior clans....let's see.....ocelots, lynxes and.....hmmm.....cougars..."
Lumar grabbed Schwenk quickly propelling him up the stairs before the cougar could react. "You're taking a chance with him, Schwenk...Cobra is not a nice cat--the only reason why you are still in one piece is because I am bigger than him...Don't be a smart mouth anywhere near him."
"Oh...OK...but he was rude first!" he snorted. "You have to admit that..."
"Cobra doesn't like humans...he can't tolerate humans...” the tiger sighed. Once they reached the fifth floor, Lumar turned right and knocked at the door. "Cheebie, open up...it's me--Lumar!"
The door swung open and there stood Cheebie all dressed in a frilly pink outfit, "Lumie!" She giggled, "Come in you darling man!" Schwenk gawked at the cheetah--Lumar wasn't kidding, she was big but he never said she was extremely rotund! Cheebie pulled the tiger in and stared blankly at the human. "What is he doing here?"
"You have got to be Cheebie....Wonderful to see you, darling..."
She fluttered her long lashes. "Hmmm...well...he has manners. I thought Teegara said he was rude? Okay come in." Cheebie seized Schwenk pulling him into her apartment. "Please, make yourselves comfortable...is your visit business or pleasure? I hope it is the latter...I've never had a human before!"
"Had??" he queried.
She placed her plump hand over her red lipstick smeared mouth and giggled. "Oh--don't worry, I don't eat humans...too much gristle and stringy! I mean sexually...that is why you and Lumie are here, isn't it? Normally it is just Lumie, Teegara, and myself...I don't mind--I love experimenting."
Lumar blushed embarrassed."Well...Lumar is a box of tricks!" he snorted. "No, hun...not love, but thanks anyway...just a safe place for a couple of days..."
She turned glowering at the tiger. "What's going on? Are you in trouble sweetie?"
Lumar nodded. "We've run into some trouble and need a place to stay...that is if it is all right with you Cheebie."
The cheetah placed her hands on her very ample hips. "Well...I do have plenty of room as you can see...but I can't let you stay for free, you know...I do have bills to pay...food to buy."
"What do you require.....oh.....shit!" he gasped.
Cheebie gave Schwenk a huge grin. "Well...as you put it that way...” she waddled over to a huge pink couch, sat, and patted the spot next to her. "Come sit beside me."
"Lumar...." he whispered "The gold....we left the gold behind..." he then sat next to Cheebie.
The tiger blanched that meant they would or more likely, he would have to return to the apartment knowing how Schwenk's mind worked. "Schwenk did you want me to go out and get your parcel?"
"No...They’ll have found it by now...I'm sorry...I was an idiot leaving it behind!" he shook his head.
"What is all this talk about?" The cheetah demanded pursing her lips. "Now, about payment...how much are you willing to dish out?"
"Lumar will hump you, OK?" he snapped back.
The cheetah regarded the big tiger; Lumar balked. "Uh...I don't know Schwenk..."
Crystalandra straightened and seized a piece of clothing that was lying discarded on the back of the door. She swiped the tigress’ blood from off of her blade then tossed the dirtied material carelessly to one side. Stepping around the mutilated body, the she-cat crossed into the kitchen and opened the fridge door. Inside carefully wrapped in a plastic sealed container were the remains of the human, McTaggert was his name that the Seekers had hired instead of doing the job themselves to find the parties responsible for the missing priest and gold. “Never send a monkey to do a Sh’iars’ work.” She muttered under her breath slamming the door. So this is where he wound up, half eaten in the tigress’ apartment. Crys wrinkled her nose—there had been another here as well who had also dined on the human but she had difficulty identifying the other’s scent… Crys had gone back to the warehouse after she had received the call from the human: “Listen to me you damned bitch,” McTaggert had barked, his voice filled with pain. “You and your sick coven owe me plenty! Because of you I’ve been mutilated—ATTACKED! Now get your fucking ass down here if you want the information I and my men have collected.” Yes, she had shown up—she stood over the human casually surveying his damage, McTaggert hadn’t been lying abut his condition, the feline whose path he had crossed had done quite a number on him. Although he had been missing various body parts, he still had enough energy to start in on Crys. She had patiently listened to his rant… “You forget to whom you are speaking human.” The she-cat said quietly; McTaggert visibly cringed while lying in his make shift cot—she smelled his blood and oh how he smelled so ripe…”You knew the risks—you had been asked by the Seekers only to investigate the priest’s disappearance, not to initiate contact with the parties involved.” “I didn’t expect anybody would have seen me…” the human groaned; then cried out in pain. Before he could tell Crys anything further, Argo contacted her summoning her back to the Sanctuary. “Is it important?” she asked clearly annoyed. “Get back here immediately.” He had barked; she drugged McTaggert to keep him quiet and slipped out. When she again returned, the human was gone. Following his scent, she found him in the tigress’ apartment. Unfortunately skinning the woman alive did not give her the information she wanted as the feline had stubbornly refused to talk. Crys finally ended the tigress’ life crushing her windpipe when all that was coming out of her mouth was nonsense. The Sh’iar warrior tossed her long mane, re-sheathed her long blade, and quietly left the apartment; as she had hoped, the woman’s screams were causing the tenants to stir…Now to pay a visit to the landlord…
