Chapter 6 - Stroking the embers.
Tensu continued to tutor Nosedive over the next couple months, he would alternate between the physical studies with him and the academic. Dive was grateful for it, he was becoming closer to being on par with the other students his age and spending time with Tensu wasn't bad. He really made the stories of Saurians were not really accurate. Dive saw Lola and Rowain standing in the headmaster’s office one day, he knocked on the door. “Any luck in finding her yet?” "None, we even went after the DuCaine Metro temple. There is only a few left." "I think she'd being kept in Keltor temple, it's a place no one would look." Dive said with a good bit of certainty. Rowain turned to look at Lola. “It is one place we haven’t really looked at.” “Well look into it tomorrow, the weapons need a bit of rest, so far we have not found Kaladan’s remains so I'm certain she is still alive." Rowain nodded. “I also have to do what I promised Nazan that I would do if I lost the bet.” Lola smiled. “You have to spend the entire week as the headmaster of this school, Rowain, which one day, will be your job.” “Don’t remind me,” Rowain rumbled. "Then again if Nosedive is right both you and Nazan loose the bet." Rowain nodded. “Only if she’s there,” Lola and Dive nodded in agreement. Lola spoke up, “I heard from Cleo, you tried to get into the jet the first time we left, Dove,” "Yeah, I wanted to help, it's good she stopped me, I'd have been in the way then." “Maybe later on, you will be,” Rowain replied. “But aren’t you late getting home?”Dive glanced at the clock. “Yeah, I better head home. See you in the morning, headmaster,” as he rushed out of the room and towards the stairs.
Lola looked over to Rowain. "How has his studies been?" "His teachers are impressed, he went from bottom of the class to just a bit above average, I haven't even assigned him a tutor but the Silverclaw kid has taken a liking to him." Lola nodded, “Tensu, correct?” “Yes,” Rowain replied, as they headed for the mess hall to get a snack from the chef if at all possible and if not, they’ll head to the local cafe to get something. As they started to walk into the mess hall, Nazan’s contact came running towards them. “Nazan needs you both in his office now.” Rowain growled as it meant no food. He looked at him and pointed his finger at him. “Two meals from the chefs, tell them it’s for the Shadows.” And he stalked back towards Nazan’s office. As they walked away, Lola whispered, “Well, it looks like you have accepted being a Shadow, Ro.” “Shove it,” Rowain growled. ~~~~~~~~ They walked into Nazan’s office to see another person standing there, dressed very oddly. “Nazan?” Lola asked. "The Brotherhood has located the girl, apparently the information comes as a thank you for the damage done on the White Guard. Lola, could you shed light on this?" "The leader of the Brotherhood is someone who is firmly against the White Guard existing." “Right, so with the information they gave to us, we will need to strike as soon as we can,” Nazan stated, as the member of the Brotherhood nodded and left the office. “I’ve told the Brotherhood’s messenger to inform their leader that we will be attacking tomorrow night and to alert us if they move the girl for we will go after them immediately.” Lola and Rowain nodded. "Looks like the Brotherhood are useful allies. Though my father would disagree," “Indeed,” Nazan replied. “I have sent the order to the weapons to prepare themselves for attack tomorrow night. I suggest both of you do the same.”"No worries about us, Nazan, we’ll be ready. So where did they find her at?"
"Keltor temple,"
"Smeg, that means Nosedive won." Nazan nodded. “I wonder what he will force us to do, now that he won the bet?” Rowain looked at him. “But he didn’t make the wager with us? So technically, you won, Nazan.” "Actually he did state Keltor even before we made the wager, though it's not where either of us thought." Rowain thought about it. “Very well, when he comes into school tomorrow, we’ll tell him about this and let him decide what our punishment will be for losing the bet.” Nazan looked at them both. “Whatever he suggests that we do, we will do with honor even if it embarrasses us,” Rowain nodded, as the door to the office knocked and opened as Nazan’s contact came in carrying two trays. “Food for the two Shadows.” As soon as he placed it on the table by the map, he left quickly. "Shadows?" Rowain shrugged. "Let's face it, me and Lola are the only two of McDove blood, Lola would be best suited as an outer Shadow, but considering I will have to run Raven’s Court how would I be able to be an inner Shadow?" Nazan gave him a nasty look. "What are you thinking?" "I'm thinking Lord Collin will have to deal with Lola more then he'd like to. I'm not against Dove ways but I know there is need for outsiders." “And if I am right, we need new blood in the ranks, which means bringing in outsiders into our ranks, from trade rank members to council ranks,” Nazan spoke. “I have asked Lord Collin if he had thought about bringing in outsiders to enrich our bloodlines, but he refuses to even consider that option as he claims that our bloodlines are strong.” Lola weighed what Nazan had said then figured she'd rephrase the question considering if he was dead set against it he would have never married her mother. "What if his unofficial opinion on the matter of new blood, the one that he can not voice as Black Dove because he needs to keep confidence amount our people?" "New blood will not fix the current problem, Collin suffers from the same plague that has been the bane of our people for generations, he's still hiding the fact that he is ill. New blood may cause it to mutate and make matters worse. There is no cure after centuries of researching it. Yet we do need the new blood because if we don't then the DNA degrade and mutations along with the plague will wipe our people out." Lola looked at Nazan in shock. "Father never told me about that, and neither did mother." "I don't think your mother knows either, but I think she may be suffering from the same illness as him." ”Unless he has Orphian Hemoptysis, then he is dying like my mother is.” Lola stated. She never stated the illness that was affecting her mother. Nazan looked at her. “Orphian Hemoptysis?” “My mother has it and she’s dying. She may have a few weeks to years before she goes,” Lola replied. Nazan shook his head, "Orphian Hemoptysis, we can cure, that treatment was found a century ago. Your father suffers from Buteo Monoega, normally referred to among our people as the plague, early and mid stage symptoms are similar, but it also starts to kill a person on the level of their DNA." “The guild healer stated that my mother is in the final stages of the disease and there was no cure and all we are able to do is to give her pain relief,” Lola replied. "Go to the medical wing and ask our head healer for the treatment for Orphian Hemoptysis as well as the medication to slow and relive symptoms for Buteo Monoega. If her healer is right then the treatment for Orphian Hemoptysis will cure her within a month, even in late stages. Otherwise make sure she takes the medication for Buteo Monoega." Rowain gave Nazan an odd look. "You’re not trade rank, so how do you know that much?" "I had Orphian Hemoptysis when I was your age Rowain, that's how I know there is a cure." Rowain looked at him shocked. Nazan smiled. “Didn’t think I had such a terrible disease, Rowain, and survived it?” “Yeah, you look so healthy now,” Rowain said, as he noticed Lola heading out of Nazan’s office to get the medication or at least, confirm what Nazan told her. "I wonder if Lord Collin actually let the healers’ guild know about what we have been fighting if there would be ant’s chance of a cure." "He won’t. But there is nothing stopping your cousin, after all it is her mothers life." "You just used her to break the Doves’ well kept secret!" Rowain exclaimed. "So what if I did? If it stays secret then there is no hope." “No hope for who, Nazan?” asked Rowain. "Isn’t that a silly question Rowain? No hope for the Dove." Rowain looked at him, “So you are saying that you just gave hope to the Doves?” Nazan smiled. “If that’s what you believe.” He turned his attention to the map. “So how will we go about attacking the main temple complex of the Ancients here in Keltor?” "If their keeping her there then the Ancients are pretty daft, or have made a shift we didn't plan on," "What sort of shift?" Rowain rolled his eyes, Nazan was always testing him. "We have been assuming that DuCaine Metro was their central HQ but what if Keltor was made central HQ before this mess just so they can go head to head with the Necromancers, I had originally thought strategy but what if it is just based on pure malice. Then Keltor makes the number one spot, capture, brainwash and flaunt it in front of the Necromancers, their 'virtue' corrupted to the side of the Ancients." “Now you are thinking,” Nazan stated. “They’ll brainwash her into siding with them and forgetting who she really is, that will piss the Necromancers off big time to where they will go into open war against them to regain her and to the populace of Keltor . . .,” “They look like the bad guys,” Rowain replied. “And they’ll have the mayor of Keltor eating out of their hands in an attempt to oust them from the city or have them all arrested for inciting open war against a group of magic users who didn’t do any wrong.” "And what will Keltor react to our actions? Raven’s Court depends on how well we can work with the city, otherwise a lot of trade rank Doves would loose their jobs." "You’re right, the outer temples were not very populated and were not overly welcome in their areas or infringed on Dove territory. Keltor is a trade port open to any one." "We need to spin it, Doves are known for blood shed but we need a just cause." "Kala is our little Black Dove’s friend, and I'm sure Kaladan’s mother and father would never let her go willingly and I have managed to get the footage of the kidnapping and the slaughter. The downside is we will have to change which weapons we use." ”Which means we cannot go in with our usual weapons?” Rowain asked. Nazan nodded. "We are going to play just as dirty by first leaking the video and admission person report to the media in concern about the young girl, as well as past records of the White Guards’ activity and how it pushes people into a position where they have no choice but to survive by a life of crime and since I also found some records of the L'Orange incident from before you were born." “It will push their head to come forth and admit that they have her or that they clam up like they’re doing right now.” Rowain said. "On the contrary, it's well known fact that the Ancients do not allow hens among them, so she is obviously a hostage, and the Necromancers were bring her to the Suscans to train. Suscans put more stock on hens then drakes, which is also known but not the full reasons. in other words we are going to spin it into a Suscan matter and make the Ancients the villains in the eyes of the public." Rowain whistled. "That is some heavy propaganda, where did you learn that?" "Not as much as you think, most of it is truth but told in a more interesting fashion." “Tell me?” Rowain asked. "I already did, you need to listen more carefully." Rowain thought back over what Nazan had stated before and nodded. He now understood how they’ll make the Ancients into the villains. “I think I got what you are saying. So how are we going to get it to the media?” Nazan smiled. “I gave it to a friend of mine who just happens to be a Suscan merchant and she knows a person in the media here in Keltor,” Nazan said, as he glanced at the clock to see it hitting the five o’clock hour. “The news is on and right now they should be airing the murder of the Necromancers and kidnapping of Kaladan by the White Guards and that they are interested in only drakes, not hens and this hen was being escorted to the Suscans. They already talked to one of the Suscan merchants and they’re going to reveal the side effect to the White Guards’ assault on their hens.” “They’re going to have to give Kala up to the Suscans or face an angry mob of drakes and hens when they come out of their temples. That will force their hands or kill Kaladan, which will piss us off even more.” Rowain said, as he noticed Nazan turning off a small light by his desk. “Is she coming back?” Nazan nodded. “If they dare to do that, they will have more than just the Necromancers on their tailfeathers,” “A global block on food and fabrics from the Suscan merchants if they kill Kaladan which will be stated by the Suscan merchant, if they go in that direction as a threat towards the Ancients, that they’re interviewing for the segment, they will be facing off with the populace angry about the possible block on the stuff that comes from the merchants and plus it is a known fact that they deal with drakes, not hens in their ranks.” Rowain replied. ”Yup, they’ll find themselves with a lot of pissed off drakes and hens when the segment is over,” Nazan stated. “I think we need to go to the café and have some good coffee and listen in on the conversations by the people there.” "I'll take you to a place I’ve become fond of, they have good Suscan coffee there, we'll bring Lolita with us and let her hear our thoughts on how to take down Keltor temple." Nazan nodded as he waved to the door allowing Rowain to lead him and Lolita to the Suscan café a few blocks away from Raven’s Court. It was there, the voices of the customers were being heard all pissed about the kidnapping of a hen by the Ancients. Lolita listened a bit surprised. "When did this get out?" "A few days ago, it was a fail safe for if we had to take down the temple in the city here. Though I think as a Suscan you can do more damage to them right now then us Doves. After all according to the reports she was kidnapped from her Necromancer escort because she was to train with your people." Lolita nodded. “And everyone knows that the Ancients are interested only in drakes, so why would they kidnap a hen who wanted to train her abilities with the Suscans.” One of the customers turned in their seat looking at them. “From what I heard from my daughter at the Keltor middle school, is that the White Guards forced their abilities on the principal and the vice principal forcing them to summon all the drakes to do their fire spell that they wanted them to do. The hen that they kidnapped actually did the spell, even though she burned the faces of the known school bullies, they forced the principal to tell them who the hen was and after the hen ran off, they forced him to reveal where the hen lived at and then they vanished from the area. They’re no good and should be stopped. If the hen wants to learn with the Suscans, then by all means let her.” Lola nodded. "Yeah, I go to that school, she was supposed to train with my mother." “Why wasn’t she taken to your mom immediately?” “My mom was weeks away from here when I found out. I enlisted some friends in the Necromancer area to keep Kaladan safe till the day we could get her to my mom’s shuttle. They slew my friends and took Kaladan away by force.” Lolita replied. "So what are you going to do about it?" "I think mom is getting back-up from the other Suscan trade commanders. It might take a few more days but there might be a small magical war in this city. Once I'm pretty certain the Ancients will not recover from." “Why would they go after a hen, when they normally take drakes?” Lolita shrugged her shoulders. “Not sure why they went after her,” "Maybe they are going to sacrifice her in some ritual." Rowain said half sarcastically. “If they did that, I seriously think that they will never want to come out of that temple of theirs as they’ll be attacked by the angry parents of the girl and others who are angered by the death of the girl by their hands,” The woman said. "So you have nothing against the Suscans taking action?" "After an incident like this I’d be disappointed if they didn't, the Suscans might be crazy uncivilized nomads, but they are not pushovers. If they let the Ancients take what belongs to them, what is there to stop other people from try to do so?" Lola smiled. “Thank you,” The woman smiled. “And if it was my daughter they took, may Morningstar help them as I would not stand idly by as they take my daughter away from me.” The smile on her face got even meaner appearance to it. “Their magic can’t hurt me, because I’m half Suscan myself, my mother was from the Sea Wind family and I moved here when I found my soul mate in my husband here.” Rowain turned to look at her. “So you are a Suscan then?” “Yes,” the woman replied. “I’ve informed my elder sister of what happened here with the girl when my daughter came home to tell me what happened. My sister told me that they’ll radio some of the other Suscans to see what they’re going to do. She did contact me a day ago stating that the Seabirds were already involved in it and that they thanked us for our support, it was not needed.” "Yeah, we are calling in our own allies." “You’re a Seabird?” the woman asked. Lola nodded. “I thought you looked like Catherine Seabird. You have her eyes.” "Yeah, Kelsa is doing most of the calling out while I have to keep an eye on the situation." “Hopefully, the situation will be over quickly.” The woman stated, looking at the TV. “I doubt that the Ancients will want to step outside of their temple right now.” They turned to look at the TV to see the vice principal speaking about how the White Guards waved their hands in front of him and the principal to force them to gather the drakes for their magical test but when the hen Kaladan Thunderbeak used the spell, they forced the principal into revealing where the hen lived at and the three White Guards vanished and the spell over both of their minds went away. Lola looked at Rowain. “Looks like the Ancients are going to be trying to convince everyone that they’re not the bad guys.” "Not going to save them though, you know the press will want to interview Odella, Canard and Tarisn.” Lola snickered. "Yeah and that is only going bad to the public’s opinion that they are the bad guys, it's not like when they were up against the Necromancers." Rowain shook his head. “This time, they are seen killing Necromancers who didn’t do anything wrong and that the Ancient’s White Guards were seen kidnapping a hen when the Ancients don’t deal with hens in their ranks. They will be wishing that they never tried to take Kaladan from the Necromancers.” Lola looked at him. “I think I should go to the Thunderbeak’s home and talk to Odella and Canard about going to the media and talking about what the Ancients did.” "You haven't told them yet what has happened?" “No, I couldn’t take the chance that they want to go after the White Guards,” "Well then they probably have found out through the news." “Most likely by now,” Lola replied. “But I still want to go talk to them about it.” Rowain nodded, as he stood up. “Then, we should go and hope that they didn’t see the news.” ~~~~~~~~ Canard stood hidden behind one of the large trees, wondering why the news media was in front of his family home when he came home from hockey practice. He turned to look at Wildwing. “Why are they here?” Wing shrugged his shoulders as they hid behind the tree, watching their home, when they spied Lola and Rowain off to the side after ten minutes of watching the scene. "Maybe we should go to your place, Wing and call mom or sneak in though the back yard." Wing nodded. “Remember the hand signs that we learned at school a few days ago?” “Yeah,” Canard replied. “Sign to Lola to go to our neighbor’s backyard and come in that way to our home,” Wing said. Canard nodded as he attracted the attention of Lola and once her attention was on him, he signed the words he needed to say and headed for the back alley where they got into the Thunderbeak’s home. It wasn’t too long before Lola and Rowain were within the Thunderbeak’s home with Tarisn sitting in the living room with Odella, Canard and Wildwing. “The Ancients got Kala.” Lola informed them. Odella nodded. "I saw it on the news today, how long have they had her?" "About almost 3 months, we have been going through each of their temples, someone from the Brotherhood actually tipped us off that she is being held at the Keltor temple." Canard stood up fast. “We should go and demand they return her to us! She’s my sister!” "Use the media outside, villianize them even more. But leave getting her back to my people." Odella nodded as she took a deep breath and stood up from her chair striding towards the front door. She glanced back at Lola and Rowain. “You better get her back, Lola.” And turned to face the door as she opened it to the mass of reporters standing there. Lola and Rowain listened to Odella make the White Guard and the Ancients into the worst type of drakes around. She tore into them claiming they tried to use their mind powers to force her to hand over her daughter to them when she broke it and told them to leave her sight or be arrested for trying to kidnap her daughter. Lola turned to Rowain. “By nightfall, the Ancients and the White Guard will be surrounded by angry parents and the police will be demanding to search their temple for Kaladan.” "You know the Ancients view themselves above the law. They will not allow the police in and will use their magic to stop them." "Though Dove weapons would be more effective, I think Suscan methods would be more appropriate now." "I think you should get in contact with Kelsa and your mom." "Mom is not so well, it'll be me and Kelsa doing this maneuver." Rowain nodded. “You know this might be a good idea to have someone from the Doves be in the police force,” Lola smiled. “That might be a good idea, maybe someone of the council rank should go into the police force.” Rowain raised a brow. "Why are you looking at me?" "It's something you should consider, do you really want to be always cooped up inside Raven’s Court?" “No,” “Good, when you get a bit older, enlist.” Lola replied as she watched the media personals start to leave after the interview with the crying Odella and the outraged twin brother of the kidnap victim. “They are good, aren’t they?” ”They both had the media eating out of their hands. The Ancients will have a hard time contending with this.” Rowain said as he looked at Odella and Canard. Lola nodded. “They’ll have no choice but to return Kala to the Suscans when they show up, since their powers cannot work on us.” "Well it seems like it with how you and Kelsa do it, even though it’s because of your Dove blood." “True, but the Suscans can block their powers too,” Lola replied. She looked at Odella and Canard. “We should leave now. I will let you know when we get Kala back.” “Thank you,” Odella whispered, as they left the house. Lola turned to Rowain. “Let’s get back to Raven’s Court,” Lola and Rowain started to head back to Raven’s Court when Lola made a detour to her mom’s house. Rowain wasn't sure what she was thinking till they got to her mom’s office. Catherine was sitting at her desk going over trade contracts. "Have you seen the news mom?" Catherine nodded, “Who's bright idea was it?" "Nazan's though I'm not sure what he is thinking." Catherine sighed and shook her head, “He's turned it all over to us. I'd say that I am unhappy except the magic users’ guild has gotten wind of the hen and wants information to where she is, they’re sending a delegation via Dove route and have cleared it with your father for them to stay at Raven’s Court while investigating." "That woosename of a Raptrin played this without me even knowing. I'll have to be careful he's a cunning bag of feathers." Catherine laughed. "Nazan Parigym, the only Dove I know who ever had the guts to stand against Collin’s father, though your father became Black Dove before Nazan was to be publicly executed which saved his tail feathers. Nazan is from the middle class of Doves, Lola, your father gave him the title of Crimson Dove, something usually reserved for a trusted council rank member that is not a Shadow. The Crimson Dove is allowed to challenge the Black Dove’s orders and break Dove traditions and laws. The only one who can take down the Crimson Dove is the Black Dove and I know your father would never do that." “She’s right, Lola.” Rowain spoke, seeing that Lola was not really wanting to let Nazan go so lightly. “Nazan is the Crimson Dove, the one Dove who can break it without getting seriously punished for it.” “How do you know?” Rowain smiled. “He taught me and told me what he was called in the ranks of the Doves.” "Why didn't he tell me?" "Because he figured you would appreciate it if he treated you more like a Suscan then a Dove." Lola half smiled. "Remind me to do something Suscan to him later, but the delegation will help for taking Kala back, after all someone must have told them she might be a pillar." "One of the delegates is Tristan Wraith. So I can guess how they got the information." “Tristan Wraith, where have I heard his name before?” Lola asked. "Guild Master Tristan Wraith, honorary pillar of wisdom," Lola nodded. "If anyone can tell if Kala really is Virtue it would be him, no wonder they’re here, at the same time if I told them where she is being held captive they may take action that I have no control over." “Indeed and the Ancients may kill her to thwart them,” Rowain stated. “But they may also, let her go knowing it would save their tailfeathers.” Catherine raised a brow. "Do you really think someone with as much power as Tristan would even give them a chance to harm her? The Ancients have no idea about the delegation.” “And that is the delegation strong point, the Ancients have no idea that they’re coming,” Rowain said. “When are they to be here?” asked Lola. "They’re less than a day away." “That alters our plan to attack the temple tomorrow,” Lola replied. “We’ll have to revise the plan.” "Then revise it, I've requested the Brotherhood check on her tonight." Catherine said. "It's good to make sure she is in good health." Lola nodded, "Thank you mother." “Now off you both go,” Catherine stated, as they left her study for Raven’s Court. “Think Kala is okay and unharmed?” Rowain whispered. “I hope so,” Lola replied as they walked down the hallway.
