“What is right?” Drew says under her breath. She looks over at Valinda, her queen, and the single most attractive creature she has ever seen in her life. The Queen of the Harpies oozes sexuality as and just has this aura that demands command. The woman is her mother, her sister, and her goddess. Drew is not sure she could betray the one she worships, does not know if it is possible to betray her. Valinda has some sort of control over her, an influence, it's harder for Drew to even think clearly around the Harpy Queen.
Drew then looks over at her Husband, the love of her life. His eyes are still closed waiting for her judgment Doc trusts her, he loves her and knows she will do the right thing. He might not have any mental control or influence over her but that does not make the hold he has on her any weaker. They are soul mates, they were made for each other or so they believe. Could she just kill him and can she live with it?
You know what's right. You know what you have to do.
Yes Drew does, it's her family she can only choose one. There is only one right choice and she knows she has to make it. “Do what I know is right? What I know...” Drew twists around and swings her sword with a mighty arch toward Valinda. “Or what you TELL ME is right?”
The Harpy queen figured this might happen and anticipated the attack. She lifts herself up into the air and the swing of the sword misses her by like a foot. She could feel the hot breeze the fire sword created as it moved close to her. “This is good child. Fight me, show me how strong you are.”
Your mine already Drew but fight me anyway.
Doc opens his eyes as he hears the fire sword swing wildly though the air, “You made the right choice Drew.”
“I would never betray my family.” Drew begins flapping her wings and enters the air after Valinda. If she wants to win this fight she needs an even playing field. She knows she cannot beat Valinda if she remains on the ground and the Harpy Queen is commanding the skies. Drew swings with her sword with enough force to fire off a few fire balls at Valinda.
Valinda flies out of the way of the fireballs, it's hard enough staying away from Drew these fire balls make it extra difficult, still her smile and confidence does not weaver “Of course you wouldn't my dahling child.” Valinda looks at Doc and smiles.
I Already won, you know it I know is Drew knows it.
Doc shakes his head pushing the queen out, “She's messing with our heads Drew, ignore her.” Doc then gets in position for their standard team up motion when facing a superior flying foe. Even though Drew is flying too that does not change the battle plan.
Struggle is vain my sister. Show me I made the right choice.
Drew noticed from Doc's lack of a reaction that he is only getting some of the thoughts that Valinda is sending into her mind. Hell the Queen might even be sending a different set of thoughts into both of their heads. Still while the queen is sending mental images and commands enter Drew's mind to weaken her resistance she does not seem to be able to read Drew's mind. She watches Doc get in position for one of their planned battle maneuvers, it is her job to keep the queen distracted until he's ready. Drew swings at Valinda's head with a fast overhead strike.
Valinda dodges the move with ease, easier then she has before. “Your getting sloppier Drew, my dahlin sister. Is your resistance weavering?”
“Am I now?” Drew responds after arching a powerful sword swing at the queen's head. Her moves are getting sloppier and maybe Valinda is getting though to her but Drew can't be sure. She has to focus on her plan while keeping those thoughts out of her head.
What are you doing sister? Luring me into a trap? It won't work but try it anyway. Lets finish this child.
Valinda dives down under Drew as Drew attempts to strike her with the sword one final time. She pulls up after avoiding the attack and does not realize that she is right above Doc's position, Drew sees what is going on and smiles, “Lets let's finish it. NOW.” Drew then turns up the power of her fire sword to maximum and a bright burst of light flows into the room around them.
Doc realizing what is going on closes his eyes and covers his face with his hands. Since the flash of light lasted only a half second he is able to get into position for his part of the plan.
Valinda is not so lucky, she takes the full blast of the bright light into her eyes and is blinded. She instinctively moves her hands to her face to cover eyes and she starts to fall out of the sky. Luckily being in an enclosed space she does not have far to fall. As she falls to the ground she lands into Doc's arms who quickly twists her arms behind her wings. The plan has succeeded. “Ok Drew I got her.”
Drew still in the air with her fire blade active looks at her husband and the struggling Harpy Queen in his arms. She does not look so dangerous now, she actually seems kind of pathetic. She feels sad for Valinda, the self proclaimed Harpy queen only wanted to save her race. “Stop struggling my qu... I mean Valinda, it's over. You lost.”
NOOOO “NO. It is never over.” YOU DON'T REALIZE HOW STRONG I ACTUALLY AM. With her mind blasting into Drew and Doc's head Valinda increases her struggles and her wings bust free. The strength of her wings knocks Doc across the room and he slams into the far wall. “Only I can say when it's over.”
As Doc hits the wall he falls to the ground and lands on his side. He is still conscious and looks up at his wife. He sees a rage in her eyes that he has only seen a couple times before. He has been lucky to never be on the receiving end when Drew is this angry. “Go get her.” He says under his breath.
Drew dives at Valinda with her fire sword extended and ready for the kill. She has a look of intense hate in her eyes as she moves in with the speed of a super nova. Valinda who is still trying to regain her composure looks up at, “Oh my ...” She is cut off as a screaming drew slams her flaming sword into the harpy queen's chest. The flames from the sword start to spreed rapidly and in a matter of seconds Valinda is covered with flames as her dead body slides out of the sword and falls to the ground.
Drew looks at her former queen still angry waiting for any sign of life so that she can kill her again, “Move bitch I dare you. MOVE.”
“Drew it's over.” A weak voice calls over to her from the corner of the room, “You won, we won she's dead.”
Drew looks over at her husband and moves over to him she is crying and laughing, happy that this crisis is over. “Are you ok dear?” She walks over to him and kneels, “Can you stand?”
Doc takes her hand as she offers is, “I think so. Nothing feels broken.” Drew pulls him up and he stands, “Neither of my legs are broken anyway and my arms feel fine. I might have a few cracked ribs.”
“We should head to sick bay. I can get you patched up and then we can start working on a cure for me and maybe for the rest of those girls. We can give them their lives back.” Drew says but she is doubting that's true, she is trying to give Doc some hope but she has a feeling that all the other woman are Harpies for good and she might be stuck this way too. “If we have any chance to turn me back though we need that thing.” Drew says pointing at Valinda's body. The flames have already died away from the body which strangely enough is still in good shape, her hair is burned away, as are some of the feathers but there are only relatively light burns on the body, for the most part the skin is untouched and the queen still looks flawless in death. Well there is that instantly fatal wound in her chest where Drew impaled her in the heart.
“Yes.” Doc hates the idea of killing off what might have been the last pure Harpy in existence but it was ether her or them. Still the Saturday's have spent their lives trying to protect Cryptids and keeping them alive and here they have done and killed one. “I'm glad her body is in such good condition I'm surprised you did not reduce her body to ashes.”
“That was an option?” Drew tries to smile as she says that but she can only force a small grin.
Drew and Doc carried the Harpy Queen's body to the ships sick bay. While power for most of the ship is down due to Valinda's invasion the sick bay, refrigeration area for medication, biological samples and for food, as well as the life support and the climate control for the ships green house have their own back up system that does not shut down when the main power is disrupted. The automatic electronic doors however were down and Drew inputs the password into the back up lock system.
Walking into the med lab Drew and Doc set down the corpse of the Harpy down onto glass tube that they open up, they have not used this part of the medical bay often as they don't usually have to study dead bodies. After her body is placed into the device Drew closes the glass tube and closes it. She turns to her Husband, “Go and lay down over there while I turn on the genetic scanner. Then I will patch you up.”
Doc nods his head in agreement and walks over to the nearest medical bed. Drew then turns on the device and rays of light start scanning the queen's body. “Well if there is any way to return you to normal we will find out soon enough.” Doc says staying hopeful.
Drew nods her head and walks over to her husband, she grabs some bandages and medicine from the near by cabinet and then stops. Doc has already stripped out of his shirt and Drew sees that his chest is badly bruised, “This is not as minor as you made it out to be.” Drew smiles at her husband as she applies the alcoholic based medication on his wounds.
Doc grimaces in the pain but pulls though it, “I did not want to worry you. How bad is it?”
“Just some broken ribs as you said.” Drew ties up the bandages for her husband tightly so that he feels it. “Though I'm surprised you can still stand, you must be sore everywhere.”
Doc sits up and then gets up onto his legs, “You know me Drew I'm made of strong stuff.” Doc walks over to the device holding onto his wife's shoulder, “Lets see what we got here.”
Drew and Doc look at the data the bio scanner discovered from the body of Valinda, not surprisingly the Harpy's DNA is very close to humans which it needs to be if she can mate with them and transform them, they have to be compatible, “I don't think we have seen a Cryptid whose genetic structure is this close to our own. This might be a good thing.” Doc says smiling at his wife.
“Let's hope so.” Drew takes a hypodermic needle from the near by shelve and draws some oh her own blood. Also she had in her hand a hair from one of the other girls, “ I got this before we left. We have to see if we can help them.” She then places her blood in the scanner and the hair in another. “Both samples will take a few minutes.”
The scanner finishes comparing the DNA for Drew and the other Harpy and comparing the samples to the DNA of the queen. The information pops up on the screen. Doc who was watching the monitor says the results out loud, “Harpy DNA at seventy five percent for subject Drew Saturday. Possibility of restoring her to fully human is 95.9 percent possible.”Afterward another program on the computer puts together the recipe for a medication, a gene purifier and how it could be created with plants kept in the ship's green house. Doc Saves the file and downloads it to a disk, “Hey Drew, I'm going to work on the medication.”
Drew hears her husband and responds with a nod but then speaks up as the results for the next DNA scan appears on screen, “Doc wait. Damn it.”
Doc stops in his tracks, “What is it?”
Drew looks at the screen reading the lines carefully, “It's what I feared.” Drew shakes her head in disappointment and then starts reading, “Harpy DNA 100% for subject A, no trace of human DNA found. Subject is incapable of returning to human as no human genetic code exists.”
Doc wanted to ask why Drew would be different but remembers, “You resisted the conversion the whole time, the transformation was must have been a slower process for you. While your physical appearance was altered internally and mentally your still you.”
“Exactly.” Drew says somberly. “Sadly the rest of them ether did not resist or did not resist strong enough. Even if they did resist for a while they had been under her influence too long. I only had maybe a day or two before I was completely under her sway which is why I acted when I did.”
Doc understand, “I have to go make the cure for you.” He looks at the body, “What should we do with that thing?”
Drew looks at the body herself, at first she can feel her anger toward the queen rise but then the pity sets in. “The best thing to do would be to return her to her people. As an offering of peace. If they take it.
Epilogue
After spending a few hours putting together the medication and then administering the first dose as well as fixing their communication system, and other essential parts of the ship, Drew and Doc started getting ready to contact the Harpies. Drew who is already losing some of the fur and feathers and is becoming more human by the minute sent the first communication to the Harpies. She sent out a mobile camera with an easy to operate touch screen and hoped it would be answered. Eventually one of the Harpies, a younger one with pinkish hair/feathers and light pink eyes answers, she seems different from how the harpies seemed before, like she has more control over her own thoughts and actions, “Hello Drew Saturday, I am Aika, once Anna Gastile.”
Drew is initially shocked by the young harpy's response, when she lived among them talking about their former human lives was forbidden, as if it did not exist. She realizes this must have to do with the queen being dead. “Hi Aika, I take it you are the leader.”
“I was one of the first converted by our queen, we will lead in her absent together.”
Drew cries slightly as she says this next part, “We tried to find a way to give you your old lives back. It can't be done.”
“Don't cry Drew.” Aika smiles, “Had you came to us with a way to 'cure' us most of us would not take it. We are not cursed. For most of us we are living a better life then we would have as humans. Did you know I was converted ninety three years ago? I might have aged by human standards ten years tops. What would I go back to.”
Drew did not think about that. “Sorry. We had to kill her.”
Aika does not look angry at Drew, “Yes you did and we know how much it hurts you and your husband. Really Valinda was holding us back. She had grown cold since becoming the last true Harpy and had too much control over us. There are some of the younger Harpies that are loyal to the Valinda she was when she died. We older converts prefer the earlier Valinda the one who was a sweet kind woman who did not force her control over us.”
“Now about the body. Would you like us to depose of it?”
“No. She was still our queen, despite what she might have done to us and how she was controlling our feelings she is still our sister, our mother. We want to bury her our selves.”
Drew nods her head, “I understand, we will have flight in about an hour, we will drop the body off before we head out. I wish you the best.”
Aika turns away from the camera and says something to the others, the words are inaudible to Drew, and then the Harpy returns to the camera, “Acceptable, we will be waiting where you first met our queen, you should remember that spot well.” The camera then goes out in a snap, the Harpies must have destroyed it.
Drew walks over to the intercom and calls Doc who is in the engine room trying to get the airship back up to flight capability. “Ok Doc I have contacted the Harpies, remember where they ambushed us? When done are done with the repairs that's where we are going. The drop off is in an hour.”
“Understood, these harpies sure have a sense of humor, taking us back where it all started. Well at least this is almost over.”
Drew looks at her arm and sees the few white feathers that are still receding, “it can't end soon enough.” She says to herself. “Alright when the engine is up tell me. I'm at the controls.
An hour flew by and Doc completed the repairs of the air ship and then the Saturday’s headed off to the Australian outback remembering the place where they dealt with the harpies the first time. Where it all began. They see a group of eight Harpies with one light pink feathers and hair, that is Aika who seems to he the leader of this group. She looks a bit older then the rest and stands in front of them and seems to be ordering them something, she is preventing the others from attacking without cause.
The airship slowly lands down on the surface and five minutes later a sliding door opens up and a ramp rolls down. Drew and Doc and standing in front of a gurney that has on it the covered dead body of Valinda. They roll the body down to the Harpies and then stop in front of Aika and the others. Aika walks over to the body and then raises the white sheet. She nods her head and lets the others look, “Ok thanks.” She then raises her hands and the other harpies move back, she glares at Drew and Doc, “Go now, and hurry. I cannot promise your safety around our kind. Many of us will hold a grudge against you. It will be in your best interest to never show your face around us. We won't forget what happened.”
Doc wants to say something and takes a step forward but Drew stops him, “She's right we should go.” Drew and Doc Walk into the airship Drew is shaking her head, “I think this was one of our worst experiences with Cryptids. It shows how little even we who are experts in the field know about some of them.”
Doc nods in agreement as the two make their way to the control room, “I know but what can we do. We try to prevent this very thing from happening. The Harpies should never have gotten this close to extinction, still it feels like we might have doomed them.”
“What could we have done? Let Valinda turn me into her loyal sister and have you be her sex slave and perfect mate?” Drew shivers at the though, “That was not going to happen.” Drew slips into the controls and starts up the engine.
Doc walks over to the navigation and watches the monitors, “Of course not. It's just it never should have gotten this bad.”
The Ship starts taking off the Harpies are watching as it happens, Aika is looking up as the air ship takes off and flies away, “Good riddance.” She then looks over at the rest of the Harpies she brought with her, one with bright red wings was brought with for a special reason, she is one of the clans top priestess and healers. “So?”“Our queen is dead but she can be brought back. Her wounds were not so extensive that she cannot return. She was well preserved the Saturday's took good care of her, those two care for life even when they are forced to take it.”
“Agreed Shikka, they are proof that our mother was wrong about humanity. I understand why she had gotten so cold but if she didn't things might have turned out differently. Well this time she will not have complete control over us. She is our mother, our queen but not our goddess, for us to survive she must survive and we will make her understand.”
Shikka shakes her head, “A lot of the younger ones will not agree with that, our mother might not agree with that.”
Aika smiles, “Those who think like me are older and stronger, and as for our mother well she will be weak when she returns. We must preserve our race and Valinda is the only way to do that. She needs to ether mate or just keep creating sisters but we have to do things differently. We can't draw attention to our selves anymore.” Aika flies off ahead of everyone else as the others grab their queen's body and follow suit. It will be a long time before the harpies queen is back up to full strength and in that time Aika and her faction must build up their power and influence for the existence of their race depends on it.
