Witching Hours Ch. 6
By Gunwild *** Hay Lin kept her goggles on and her jacket’s hood up. She also kept her hair tucked away and tried to walk hunched over to hide her face. She was not enjoying playing at disguise. It didn’t help that losing the game might cost her everything. The police would have her picture, and the news, and everyone would have questions for a girl who could put out a burning house with her bare hands. Her powers could have helped her get away from all this, but now hardly seemed like the time to use them. *I’m never going to be able to fix this,* she despaired, walking for the third time around the busiest block in the financial district. She’d been at it for the better part of a day now, hoping not to get noticed and wandering farther and farther from the restaurant and home. *This is my own fault for not thinking. I never think, I never care, I’m the team airhead, and everyone’s going to pay for my mistakes…* Part of her argued that this would've happened eventually. They had appeared in public, in as Guardians, plenty of times. It had been luck as much as caution that had kept her and the others from being caught, and Hay Lin’s luck had run out. *No, that’s not true. I didn’t even worry about that. I just saw a fire and tried to put it out because that’s what you do. Except most people don’t have secret wind powers, which aren’t supposed to be found out about, and won’t need to run away from home if… oh, I need to sit down.* Hay Lin hadn’t rested since the incident, and her legs were starting to hurt. Had it been a whole day? The sun was going down. *It didn’t feel like that long. Maybe the rest of my life will go by this quickly.* She pushed her way into a chain bookstore and took one of the comfy chairs they had where cheapskates could read the merchandise instead of buying it. Her tense thighs seized up until she laid back and relaxed. It seemed a fair place to stay. From here Hay Lin could watch people live their normal lives, shopping, undisturbed by anything but petty, normal problems. *I have no idea what to buy Mom for her birthday,* maybe, or *The boy I like doesn’t like me back,* or *I wonder if my card is over the limit?* She would give a lot to have those problems again. As it was, her whole life had been a wreck for weeks. For one thing, she felt reasonably sure all her friends were keeping secrets from her. What kind wasn’t clear, only that they were becoming closer and spending more time together, and Hay Lin wasn’t invited. She was used to being an outsider of sorts, but not among her girls. Also, after getting over the initial shock of realizing that she’d had *sex* with *Orube* of all people, she’d started feeling attracted to women. Not all of them, not all the time, but now when she touched herself she had her mind on sex with women as much as with men, which she had never seen coming. *You can’t catch being gay, or anything. It’s not contagious. But I’ve always liked fooling around with myself, and she was so good at it… she even gave me a sex toy…* She thought about Orube a lot now, specifically when she was aroused. That she’d never said yes to the young woman didn’t bother her as much as not having closure on it. She still wanted her again. *She didn’t even see it like I did. She just thought she was giving me help with a cold. And girls are never with each other in Basiliade.* It didn’t matter now. She could see Orube again when they took care of Veil business, but Hay Lin had forfeited the right to a personal life when she blew her secret. She didn’t even have the strength to cry about it. All she could do was lower her head and shut her eyes. *I can still help. I can still be the Guardian of Air. As for the rest of it… well, I had a good run.* When she woke up, she would find a quiet place to transform, unseen. It would change her appearance enough for her never to be recognized again, and she would abandon her old identity. *No one will ever see Hay Lin again.* *** She woke up with a crick in her neck, but otherwise fine. The interior of the bookstore had gone fairly dark and looked empty. *They can’t have closed with me inside… oh, no, I hope they didn’t lock me in...* “Finally.” A pair of oddly-shaped eyes flashed at her from the vicinity of a nearby chair. “I might’ve thought you’d died, if you hadn’t been snoring.” “Gaah!” Hay Lin put up her hands to defend herself instinctively, but even though she could clearly feel them, she didn’t see them in front of her face. She had no hands! “GAAH!” “Relax. You’re only invisible.” Once her heart stopped threatening to jump out of her chest she realized that this was perfectly true. Hay Lin had been able to turn invisible for a long time now, but it wasn’t as though she was in the habit of waking up that way. “That *scared* me. Who is that?” Her eyes were adjusting to the low light, but not fast enough. Taking off the goggles barely helped. “You can’t tell?” The voice was slightly rough, and a touch disappointed. Hay Lin blinked the last of the sleep out of her eyes and shook her head. “Sorry, Orube.” She took stock of the young woman’s jeans and sweater and corrected herself. “Er, Rebecca.” “You can call me what you want. There’s no one here but us. You slept through the store closing and were invisible. No one noticed.” Hay Lin started. “How could I have turned invisible? I was asleep!” “What were you thinking of as you went to sleep?” “I… oh.” Hay Lin rubbed her head. “Right.” She slumped back in the chair, finally. “Hiding. Sure. Look, why are you here? Do we have a mission or something?” “Of course not. I’m here because we are concerned about you.” For a second her hopes were up, and then guilt was gnawing at the base of Hay Lin’s stomach.*What have I got to be happy about?* “I know I messed up. I can still do what I have to. I can still fight. If you want me to stay in Kandrakar, I can do it. If you want to cut me off from the Auramere…” her hand moved a fraction of an inch, as though to summon wind and protect herself, but it dropped. “… then you can. But please don’t make me quit.” Orube tilted her head. Hay Lin was able to make out one of the pointed ears she tried to hide under her hair – not that anyone would notice unless they were looking for them. The older girl’s generous lips tweaked into a smile. “You’re dutiful.” “I have nowhere else to go,” Hay Lin admitted ruefully. “Now that I ruined my secret.” There was a long pause, and then Orube laughed at her. Laughed! “It’s not funny!” Hay Lin stood up, though this made her back twinge. Apparently walking around for a day and then falling asleep hunched over in a chair hadn’t done her body any favors. “You don’t know what this is like. You don’t have a family, or a real life, you just pretend to be…” She stopped herself at the level stare Orube gave her. It wasn’t angry, but it made Hay Lin shut up quick. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.” Orube nodded. “I know you didn’t. You’ve always been… supportive.” She crossed her legs and folded her hands neatly on top of them, looking as patient as a stone statue, though still ready to move fast when it was time to. She always looked like that; her posture could remind you of a tightened spring. “You’ve got nothing to worry about. The recording of you didn’t catch your face. It’s not known that you’re the one who stopped the fire… though the facts of the case remain unexplained. The news survey says people think it was a prank of some kind. Honestly, people in this world would refuse to see magic if it blew out a hundred fires at once.” Hay Lin sat down harder than she meant to. It hurt her sore backside, but she couldn’t think about that. “So I’m… I’m off the hook?" “No.” Orube pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and flipped it open, showing a screen displaying a rather large number of new messages. “Will has texted me every few minutes all day asking me to find you. She cut her vacation short. Cornelia and Taranee are in Meridian, they were searching there. Irma’s tried to cover with your parents, but you gave her nothing to work with. They *did* recognize you on television, and will need an explanation.” *My parents.* She was ashamed of how much she had burdened them with. How her father had never known about the lives the women in his family really lived, and how her mother would never accept knowing that her daughter had risked her life for any reason. “I’m not looking forward to that talk.” This was absurd, she should be happy that the whole world didn’t know what she was capable of. But it didn’t seem all that great at the moment. “Why are you feeling so guilty? You smell of it. You’ve faced a difficult situation and have the chance to repair the damage-” “Why?!” Hay Lin made a fist and banged it on the arm of her chair; a few light reference volumes were blown off a nearby shelf by a freak wind. “Because I messed up, is why! I used my power in public, where anyone could see!” Orube looked totally unperturbed. “You stopped a fire. On my world, people who *don’t* help fight fires before they spread are punished.” She made fists again. “I don’t care where you come from, I live here, and I was *wrong.* And the others are all worried now, but most of the time they’re off being each other’s best pals, and I don’t have one, so where does it leave me? My parents won’t understand, and my grandmother might have explained it to them, but she lives in another dimension now and I can’t even talk to her when I need her. And my boyfriend moved away, I’m scared I’m not responsible enough to keep my abilities, and when I see you I don’t know whether to yell at you or kiss you!” That last part came out without her entirely meaning to say it, but she didn’t feel too bad. It had to get hammered out sometime. Orube’s catlike eyes remained peaceful and eerily bright in the darkness, though by now it was easy for Hay Lin to see her. “I’ve come to realize that I did... treat you wrongly, when you were sick.” Hay Lin couldn’t help taking a page out of Irma’s book and going for rude sarcasm. “What, you should have used an even more awful dildo?” Orube’s eyes finally dropped. “I didn’t realize at the time that what I did is… unique to my world. It wasn’t appropriate. I didn’t give you the chance to refuse. The idea of women… *mating* is foreign to me. So is the idea of… forcing affection on anyone. But from what I can gather, I’ve a great deal of new… what’s your word for toh again...? Obligation. I’m indebted to you, and I’ll spend my entire life making it up if I have to. You can take your revenge any time. I’ll submit to anything.” Hay Lin was halfway between feeling vindictive and stunned. “Like… anything, anything?” Orube nodded. “We can go to the police, if you like. Or you can give me a public beating. I can build stocks, with some time, or if you want to take my life…” “Whoa! Hey, no, none of that.” Hay Lin became horrified with herself for even considering half of the punishments she’d been thinking of. She wasn’t cruel, she never had been, and didn’t even want to think of herself as capable of it. Getting back at Orube had never been a serious goal of hers. She wanted to feel better about what happened, more than anything else. “We can do this without being hurty. I mean, I’m really mad because this doesn’t make sense. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, and I don’t really know what to do about it.” Their eyes met again. “I’ve had the same problem. I wasn’t expecting for you to kiss me, but I liked it. I think about it when I’m… often. I think about it often.” “Yeah. Me, too.” They sat in silence for a time. Orube broke it with a sigh. “Your concern that our friends are excluding you isn’t baseless. But they have an honest reason. It’s not because they want to hurt you.” “I never thought *that,*” Hay Lin clarified, though she crossed her arms and tried to imagine what the other Guardians could possibly think was worth cutting her out for. She’d come up with a fairly long list in her mind, over the past few months. “But what is it?” “They’ve become each others’ lovers.” That had not been one of the things she’d imagined. Hay Lin’s ears rang with the words. She tried to think of exactly how that made sense, and was assaulted with all the reasons it *didn’t* make sense in return. She rubbed the bridge of her nose where the goggles had pinched her skin rather raw, licked her teeth pensively, tapped one foot, and finally decided on the most logical explanation. “You’re nuts, Orube.” “No. How do you think I tracked you here?” “That smell thing you do, I guess,” Hay Lin allowed, not quite seeing where this was going. Orube did have tracking skills like no human’s. “Why?” “They smell like each other. Will and Irma, and then Cornelia and Taranee – they smell of each others’ sex, and contentment. That’s how couples usually smell. Haven’t you noticed how much time they spend paired off? They’re in love, and somehow they don’t know about each other – don’t ask me how, it’s completely obvious. But they’ve never been happier. Didn’t you notice?” Of course Hay Lin had noticed. But she’d thought it was simple girl stuff, not… *girl-on-girl* stuff. “They’re all… they like… why didn’t I know this?” “Because they didn’t want us to know. I’m not sure why.” Hay Lin was happy for them, of course, but she could tell why they wouldn’t want this getting out. They couldn’t know how anyone would react. They’d be afraid of losing everything. *Like with my parents.* “… so. Where does that leave… us?” There was another long silence. Hay Lin’s supernatural hearing let her know there was a car rumbling past a block away, that there were birds nesting on the roof of the store, and a faucet in the employee lavatory had been left dripping by someone careless. But she had no way of knowing what Orube might say next. The older girl’s posture relaxed and she leaned forward, luminous eyes narrowing in a fashion that Hay Lin felt it would be fair to call ‘wild.’ “I want to be your lover, too.” *It’s strange how fast my mouth can go dry.* Hay Lin couldn’t seem to form words properly. “Uhmr… ruhd... really?” “I’d like to be your girlfriend, because I care about you, and you excite me. I want you to teach me how to make you feel good the right way.” Orube said this with the same soldierly conviction as she said everything. There was no mistaking her sincerity. “Is the position available?” she asked, leaning back and extending both arms on the chair in an eye-catching way that had to be intentional. Her shoulders flexed under the fabric of her sweater and Hay Lin was reminded of what it was like to be held by them. Orube was a strong girl. *She was firm, but when she kissed me, that was always gentle.* “I don’t know if I *have* that position,” mumbled Hay Lin, trying to think. *I’m attracted to her. Pretending I’m not isn’t going to work. But if we date… that’s a big step. That’ll change who I am, or at least what people think I am. But since when have I given a crap about that?* She was Hay Lin Lin, the free spirit, the girl so nice they named her twice, the one who liked trying new things. How could she let her hang-ups stop her? “But I’d like to try.” “Spacious,” Orube muttered, smiling with sharp teeth. Hay Lin just giggled. *** Orube’s home was, of course, Mrs. Rudolph’s home, or had been for a long time. Hay Lin was familiar enough with it to know how to find the shower, since they’d agreed she would be best off getting presentable before heading home. She undid her hair and accepted a towel as Orube made apology after apology with uncharacteristic nervousness. “You need two hands to make the shower turn on, it gets stuck. And it’s on the opposite wall from the handle, which I know is unusual, sorry. Also, there’s a plant behind the curtain I’m used to watching out for, but I don’t want it to hit you. Should I move it?” “It’s fine.” “The water doesn’t run hot immediately. I would have fixed it if I knew how, or that someone else would use the bath. If you notice any hair, please forgive me, I try to clean it but there always seems to be one more.” “That’s okay.” “Also, when applying this shampoo, you should lather by running your fingers through your hair, not rubbing it around. That can cause knots, and I don’t want to be responsible for-” “Shush.” Hay Lin wagged her finger, winking. “I’ve been washing myself for a while, now, you know.” “You’re a guest, and my friend, and… important to me,” said Orube haltingly, as though not sure what to term it yet. “I *need* you to be happy with me, and forgive me.” “I forgave you as soon as I knew you meant well. And I’m happy with you already.” Orube’s face actually flushed a bit, but her hands tensed, and her sharp nails extended a fraction of an inch. She was coiling up again, ready and poised. “I have to do something to repay you, not just talk. I won’t be a worthy mate otherwise – I’ll still be carrying the debt with me everywhere I go, and that’s no way to enjoy you!” Hay Lin rolled her eyes. “Fine, I know the perfect thing you can do. After I talk to my parents, I’m going to let them think, and then you…” she poked Orube in the belly, “Will take me out to dinner.” “Dinner? You want food?” “I want you to take me on a date,” said Hay Lin, “And I want you to be very romantic.” Orube’s nose crinkled a bit while she thought. It was adorable. “That doesn’t sound like a punishment. I’d be glad to do it anyway.” Hay Lin felt herself easing into the idea of teasing Orube a bit. “Lucky you. Now get out while I shower – which I can do *fine,* you don’t need to coach me. Why don’t you think about what kind of lovely things you’re going to do for me later?” Orube nodded earnestly, like she’d committed herself to another of her sacred missions. “We’ll go somewhere so fancy they *include the gratuity in the check!*” It was too cute. Hay Lin hid her smile. “Stellar.” Once she was alone and had waited for the shower to get warm, she stripped down and stepped inside. Despite the earlier… unpleasantness, Orube was starting to charm her. Something about her naiveté, coupled with the sense of honor that guided her actions. And her pretty face didn’t hurt either. *So I like a girl’s face.* It felt strange, but only in the way it was unfamiliar. It was exciting – Hay Lin was already thinking about all the ways this would be different from dating a boy. Would they go to different places? They’d definitely talk about different things. Of course, she’d have to be more careful if she ever wanted to borrow Orube’s clothes, now, as losing them would threaten the whole relationship… *I probably can’t wear most of her clothes, though. She’s so tall. And she’s got even longer legs than me.* Orube was college-aged, so of course she had a more mature body, but Hay Lin didn’t feel jealous. The more she thought about it, the happier she was about Orube’s appearance. *My first girlfriend, and I hit it out of the park. I’ve seen guys looking at her butt. Now it’s my butt! It’s even firm, I know, I touched it… I’ll touch it again, too.* While she finished rinsing her hair – it had finally grown down to her knees, so it took a long time – she threw it back and started soaping up her body. It was a bit… tinglier than usual, of course, and it was no mystery why. She’d been thinking about the things Orube had done to her every day, and the knowledge it would happen again was stimulating. Except this time she would be doing things to Orube, too. That seemed only fair, and it would be nice to see someone so strong squeal a bit. *She’s so tough monsters on her world check under the bed for her, but I make her blush. I wonder what else I can make her do?* Confidence was coming back to Hay Lin, and there was blood rushing through her whole body as she turned up the water temperature, letting it hit her smiling face. *Things are going to be okay.* She wasn’t exactly sure when she started touching herself, but once she’d begun she could only run with it. In her mind she was touching Orube and Orube was touching her. It wasn’t harsh or forceful, and when they kissed it was what both of them wanted. And when Orube bit, it was because Hay Lin told her to, because she wanted to feel those strong teeth pull at her skin, and hot breath on the back of her neck… On that thought, Hay Lin’s wrist slid against her soapy thigh, and she rubbed herself harder than she meant to. She reeled on her feet, slipped and sat down harder than she meant to, not getting hurt, but startling herself. She yelped loudly, trying to get back on her feet without slipping, pulling the shower curtain to one side. In the hall, there were rapid steps, and two seconds later a cracking noise as the door hinges shot off, hitting the floor tiles. The door itself clattered sideways and fell over, Orube retracting her bare leg from a high kick and dropping into a crouched fighting stance. She had no pants on, clearly having been in the middle of changing clothes. “Are you all right?!” she yelled, eyes darting side to side in search of enemies. Then she focused on Hay Lin, who stood, covering herself with her hands while water rushed down her body. Orube blushed again, looking at the ground. “I… I thought you might need me…” Hay Lin’s pounding heart almost drowned that out, but she knew what Orube had said. She considered for a moment, and couldn’t suppress a smile. Relaxing, she let her arms drop, sliding one palm down her side and to her hip. She was happy to notice Orube’s eyes followed her movements. Oh, yes, her confidence was back for sure, at least for the moment. “I do.” She beckoned, and Orube stood up unsteadily, like she didn’t know what to do next. “I need you in here… with me.” “I…” Orube stammered, “I… are you sure that…” “Kiss me, you fool!” said Hay Lin in an exaggerated, theatrical voice, reaching out and grabbing Orube by the shirt collar. She stumbled closer and their lips pressed together. At first all she got back was some heavy breathing, but in a second Orube was pushing up against her, stepping over the lip of the tub and hugging her. She was taller, which made it harder to pull her shirt off over her head. Finally Orube yanked it off herself and dropped it onto the tiles with a wet splat. The water from the shower barely seemed to stick to her body; she looked almost too smooth and sculpted for it to find purchase. “No bra?” Hay Lin asked, still breathless from their kiss and unable to keep herself from staring. “No what?” “Never mind,” Hay Lin whispered, smiling and leaning in to kiss again. Orube’s tongue even turned over between her lips while she felt fingers start to slide through her hair – a little roughly, which she secretly enjoyed. *My hands,* Hay Lin remembered, *I have to do something with my hands.* When she’d danced with Eric, she’d always put her hands on his shoulders, and done pretty much the same when they’d made out, but that was a boy-girl situation. What were you supposed to do with your hands on a girl for *sex?* “Ah,” Orube gasped, not sure whether she liked kissing long and deep or in quick bursts more, “Ah, it- mmnh…” It was going to be very hard to go slowly with Hay Lin. She was delectable and petite, and her wet skin felt so hot and alive… she couldn’t help kissing the girl’s neck a bit too hard, or pinching her bare bottom enough to make her squeal. But Hay Lin wasn’t fighting her this time. “I want you…” Hay Lin muttered into Orube’s ear, her voice wavering but insistent, “… I want you to do it to me.” It was so sweet. Orube felt one of Hay Lin’s long fingers hooking into the waistband of her panties and yanking it down, exposing her. It felt good to be naked with her woman. “Be specific,” she said, wrapping her arms around the smaller girl, a little protectively, but also to force their middles together. Hay Lin’s hardened nipples poked her and she smiled her sharp-toothed smile again. “What do I do to you?” “I want you to do…” Hay Lin’s legs couldn’t decide if they wanted to press together or open up for Orube, so she shut her eyes and let the older girl hold her up. She was feeling less assertive, but somehow that wasn't the point now. They were past that. “… *everything.*” If Hay Lin had been looking, she’d have seen Orube actually lick her lips before speaking. “I’m going to put you on your back. Lift your legs in the air for me.” Lying down in the tub with the shower running, Hay Lin felt totally exposed. It was raining onto her breasts, her belly, even her legs – and Orube put an arm around her knees while she knelt, lifting her butt in the air. Hay Lin yelped, but didn’t struggle. She just bit her lip when she felt Orube’s mouth start kissing the back of her thighs, then just under her pussy, which had never felt quite so burning hot or profoundly empty. *I want her to put her mouth on it!* was all Hay Lin could think, but she bit her knuckle rather than saying anything. It was too all too embarrassing, but she was going insane! “P-please… you can’t tease me like this…” Orube lowered Hay Lin so she was lying down again, and knelt over her. “You said I could do everything. Did you think that meant we would only do what you wanted?” Hay Lin’s hands were holding Orube’s hips tightly, so tightly that her nails were digging into the skin. Orube was too tough to notice. “Well, what do you want…?” Hay Lin shook her head, not to say ‘no,’ but simply because she was trying to get past her fear of putting it into words. “I want you to… make me come…” “I can do that.” Instantly Orube was grabbing a bottle from next to the tub, something clear and slow-flowing. She didn’t so much open it as spin the cap off and upend it completely over Hay Lin's navel, where it was nearly washed away by the shower. Orube was too quick for it, though; her fast hands spread it over breasts, shoulders, armpits, pelvis, and- Hay Lin gasped at the feeling of a palm running over her genitalia. This stuff smelled like baby oil, but it was tingly. It seemed to be heating up and animating her skin. “This is what I use when I’m alone,” purred Orube, sliding a lubed-up finger along Hay Lin’s asscrack. “I’m glad I can share it with you.” It was wonderful. Hay Lin barely had the wherewithal to keep pulling on Orube’s hips, but it wasn’t necessary. The girl finally laid down on top of her, sliding against the oil a bit, but able to leave a hand rubbing outside of Hay Lin. The other stroked her long ropes of wet hair affectionately. “Guide my fingers in.” Hay Lin was whimpering. “But you can…” “I want you to *bring* me in this time.” It was easy for Hay Lin to do, but much harder to get herself to do it. She gripped Orube’s wrist a bit too tightly, and no matter how hard she pulled Orube wouldn’t let the fingers slip in at anything but a snail’s pace. All the while she was massaging Hay Lin’s small, slick breasts and nibbling her neck, which was starting to flush bright red from all the love bites. Orube’s thumb ran in circles around Hay Lin’s clitoris until she started to scream. She didn’t stop screaming until after she had stopped shaking, and that took a long time. *** Orube cooed and sighed. She had turned off the water and decided to calm herself after a job well-done, but Hay Lin didn’t seem to think that was enough. This the girl's first time attempting cunnilingus, and she was doing a good job – what she lacked in experience she made up for in gusto. “We… we’re not getting too clean, you know. Our friends and your parents will be waiting…” Orube said it mostly to herself, almost laughing. Hay Lin didn’t care. Orube was petting her head gently, those rock-solid thighs would go taut every time she climaxed, and her problems didn’t seem like they could reach her right now. Not here. Not with this woman. She looked up from her work, grinning. “Let them wait. I’m with my girl.” TO BE CONTINUED *** AUTHOR’S NOTE: (Holy crap was that one rough going, and it really needs expanding in the sex, I think, but if I didn’t put it up now it was never going to happen. Thanks to the proofers, even the ones who didn’t get the story because of my email failure a while back. Please review, as I need some more places to go with this story… I've already got some nice feedback. Everybody seems to like the Will and Susan chapters best, which I quite understand, as it was always my plan to have the stories center around them. There are some emails I've gotten about how Will works better with Irma, or Susan, or even exhorting me to get around to writing a huge orgy scene, and I wish I could do it all for you delightful perverts. You're so supportive. No but seriously, tell me what you think, it's what keeps me coming back.
