“Curtis,” Chrissi began hesitantly, as she kneaded his wide bed with her tires, giving him a deep massage. “I have to admit, I’ve never felt this way about anyone else but Tommy Joe. I’ve completely fallen in love with you.” She blushed, something she rarely did, and continued to rub behind his cab. He settled lower on his tires with a sigh, relaxed, though unaffected by her words which meant little to him.
Chrissi looked down at him warmly. He made her feel so good, and after their first encounter she’d realized she wanted that kind of attention for the rest of her days. Then he’d told her that he was all hers, offering the kind of promise that her longtime lover had never been willing to consider. She hadn’t been able to help the feelings of affection that she’d been harboring for him, or keep it from him any longer.
“I know it’s early in our relationship, but I’m ready to commit to you and I left Tommy a note saying we’re through.” This sudden revelation made Curtis leap up, sliding the surprised Jaguar from his back.
“What? Oh, I mean, you’re really ready to make that kind of decision?” he sputtered. “I thought you said you’d had an open relationship for years with him, so what made you leave him?”
“Everyone else I’ve been with, and I’m not ashamed to say that’s a very long list, has always been someone Tommy never had a problem with. If you want to know the truth, I’ve bedded his friends, most of the guys you and he race against, even a few of his relatives. He knows about all of them and they’re still guys he can go out and have a beer with, because we’re open that way. You’re the first one I’ve given myself to that he can’t stand. He still doesn’t know that I’m with you, but I imagine he will soon enough.” Moving back into place, she worked her wheels against his back, so she wouldn’t have to look him in the eye as she awaited his response.
“I can live with that if you can, I guess. So you’ll stay here with me?” She nodded happily and coasted to his side.
Curtis tried to will himself to sleep, but it was hard not to keep one eye open to admire the gorgeous car dozing alongside him. Her profession of love for him after their tryst had startled the pickup, for he felt nothing of the same toward her. To be sure, he was strongly attracted to Chrissi and her mere presence mesmerized him, but as it had been with his previous lovers, he only felt compelled by lust rather than any tender feelings. He was even more unnerved by her announcement that she’d left her longtime fiance for him, for his plan to destroy his competitor would have worked far better if she’d remained loyal to both Tommy Joe and himself.
Maybe this isn’t such a bad development, he consoled himself, Tommy Joe might be so distraught he’ll be caught off guard more easily.

“Never in a million years,” insisted Doreen back at the junkyard a few days later, when her husband had finally worked up the nerve to discuss what Doc had suggested. She was still panting from an exerting round of last-ditch efforts to conceive. “I…whew…could never hurt ya by bein’ with another guy, even if it weren’t outta love. That stuff’s Tommy Joe and Chrissi’s specialty, even if they did break up.”
Mater hugged her close to him, choosing every word as carefully as he could. “What if ya already knew the guy an’ he had no other motives? Ya know, he was just willin’ to help us have kids, and I told ya I was okay with it?” His lover’s eyes widened, and he continued, “I talked to Tommy Joe today and he said he’d do it fer us if yer fine with it. I kin tell ya I am.”
Doreen looked down at the ground shyly, not sure how to respond. “I dunno, Mater, I’m aware how much ya want to be a dad an’ all, but that might be too awkward, what with him bein’ sorta vulnerable and lonely now that Chrissi left him. An’ we’ve been friends for so long even ‘fore I met ya...”
“I’d never make ya do anythin’ ya don’t want,” said Mater. His melancholy tone gave his lover pause.
“I’ll…think about it, okay?”

“You’re free to do what you want,” Chrissi said with a shrug as she stood in the dressing room at the Strip Joint. “Someone ought to make him happy, because it sure isn’t going to be me from now on.” Doreen coughed, breathing in some of the aerosol from the glitter paint her friend had just applied.
“This ain’t about pleasin’ him!” the El Camino retorted, “it’s about whether you’re okay with him fathering our babies. I haven’t even made up my mind because I need to know that you’re okay with it. When ya come to yer senses and reunite with him, I don’t want ya hatin’ me.”
“I’m fine with it,” Chrissi said honestly. “You know he has other children around besides the three he had with me, and at least he’d get to see these ones grow up.”
“Well, I’ll get back to ya on it,” said Doreen, departing. “I just wish ya’d git back to him. He’s broken-hearted.”

The Fourth of July had been a blazing hot day, and as the air cooled after sunset, the residents of the town and a few visitors spread blankets out in the desert to watch a meager fireworks display. Fillmore and Sarge had built a bonfire, and Tommy Joe, Tow Mater and Doreen drew in close. Chrissi was off with Curtis.
“Thought any more about it, Doreen?” asked Tommy Joe cautiously, resting a wheel against her fender.
The pickup gazed at the crackling flames. “A lot,” she admitted, “it’s just that ya and I have always been friends, and if we go through with this it’ll change everythin’. An’ if Mater has second thoughts afterward and thinks I’m a tramp fer agreein’ to this, there’s no takin’ back what’s already been done.” She watched as a toddler coupe, the youngest son of a vacationing family, dropped his marshmallow stick into the fire and collapsed into frustrated sobs as his treat burned. Mater wheeled over and helped him hold a second stick farther from the flames, then made sure the snack wasn’t hot enough to burn the child before handing it over.
“Damn, that ain’t fair,” she said in a low voice, feeling more than a bit maternal now that she was in the most fertile time of her cycle. “Look at ‘im, he wants to be a father so badly.” She turned to Tommy Joe, her eyes questioning him, and he gave her a silent confirmation. “I, uh, gotta talk to Mater a minute, okay?”
Pulling the tow truck far from the group, she waited for his response. “This is the best night fer it an’ I guess I’m ready after all. But…ya kin’t turn around an’ change yer mind any more than I kin after I go an’ do this. If this drives a wedge between ya and yer cousin I’d never forgive myself.”
Mater drew her close and kissed her passionately. “I promise ya it won’t change a thing.” He pulled back and laughed a little. “This is mighty awkward, ain’t it? Well, I’ll wait here. Now ya go and make us some beautiful babies.” Somewhat hesitantly, he watched his lover drive off with Tommy Joe, giving her a nod of encouragement when she looked back at him. When they were out of sight, he cracked open a can of ethanol, wishing it could be him holding her, loving her, and creating new life.
