------- A few hours later -----
Zuko sat on a log on the opposite side of the lake from the avatar's camp, the lake and rain had caused a huge cloud of fog to cling to the surface of the lake making the other side impossible to see. Iroh hummed happily, making tea.
Aang poked the fire he had made, glancing at Katara worriedly. Sokka fished, looking quite pleased with him self. Katara shifted finally, opening her eyes a bit “....hmm”
"you're awake, great!" Aang yelled and jumped over to her. Sokka waved at her, concentrating on his fishing. He wanted to have fish for dinner.
Katara sat up. “My head hurts…” She moaned and rubbed her head. “You guys okay?”
Aang looked a bit taken aback by the question "I'm fine, how about you?"
Sokka gave a thumbs-up still fishing. He was looking a little annoyed with all the noise they were making.
"My body hurts but I’m feeling alright, sort of dirty though." Katara tried to stand up and failed collapsing back towards the ground behind her
Aang dashed over and caught her. "Well you want to take a bath you can go to other side of the lake if you don't want us to see you.”
Katara smiled. “Al-alright... I’ll be back soon.” She held on to his shoulder as she stood up straight, beginning to walk to the other side. “I won't be gone long.”
Aang got her a towel "here." He threw it to her.
Katara caught it, and smiled at him. “Thanks Aang.” She continued her walk to the other side.
"Be careful!" Sokka said without looking up, was a little concerned with her going off on her own, but she should be ok, there was a lake full of water, right next to them.
Katara waved back at him. “I promise I will, I’m next to water aren't I, no worries.” After she was out of sight she began to limp, holding her stomach.
Zuko sat like a lump on a log, almost exactly like a lump on a log, as he looked a lot like a lump at the moment, and he was sitting on a log around a crackling fire. His uncle was staring at him concerned, over a cup of steaming tea.
"Why don't you look around a little? Have a hot bath; it will make you feel better." Iroh smiled at his nephew, a hot bath always made him feel better, and one of the nicest things about fire bending was never having to take a cold bath.
Katara winced as she walked, not really minding a cold bath at the moment, as she removed her shoes and walked through the water, sighing as the cold liquid relieved her aching feet, she splashed loudly as she walked.
"I don't think anything will make me feel better now...” Zuko sulked, more or less ignoring his uncle.
Iroh frowned and spoke sternly "Zuko, go walk around, clear your head."
Zuko nodded standing up and walking off. He didn’t really know where he was going, but the rain had caused a nice mist to cling to the lake’s surface, and the shore seemed like a good place to walk.
Katara began to remove her shirt as she walked taking out her hair and sighing, trying hard not to think about being raped, she’d seen worse happen to a woman, she let her mind linger on Zuko, ‘I wonder if he got hurt?’… She splashed more, kicking up water as she went.
Zuko walked slowly along the edge of the water, he had a few bruises, but the guard had been nothing compared to his raw rage. Fire was fueled by rage, and his could have seared a dragon after he found out what had happened to Katara.
Katara sighed and stopped walking removing the rest of her clothes and stepping into the water, not bothering to cover up the loud splashing noises she was making. Zuko was currently too far away to notice her, but was getting closer, very slowly. Katara began to wash herself, wincing as she cleaned off her hand. Zuko kicked a stone into the water; it plunked into the water with a satisfying sound though Katara was splashing too much to notice anything. Zuko was beginning to notice the splashing; he lowered himself into the mist a little, and lurked toward it slowly. Katara kept splashing about; she was enjoying herself, and watching the water fly through the air and back down into the lake had a sort of, relaxing power for her. Zuko lurked closer, the fog too thick to see who was making the noise. Katara was feeling ten times better then she had, the water soothing away her aches, she allowed herself a break in the silence around her, expressing her relief quietly. “Mmm…”
Zuko was practically on the water's edge, and still couldn't see who was there "who's there?" He said, not too loud, but loud enough for who ever was making the noise to hear. Katara stopped splashing. Freezing up, and ducking into the water to cover herself, not recognizing the voice at first. Zuko couldn't risk fire bending when he didn’t know who it was, if it was just some villager they could end up calling the earth kingdom on him. "Who’s there? I know you're out there."
Katara was sort of nervous, she couldn’t see more than an outline in the fog, and the strong well build body she saw could have been a soldier from either side. “I am.” But she was surrounded by water so she found the courage to speak
Zuko didn't recognize her voice. He could tell it was female, but he couldn’t tell who it belonged to. It just sounded so familiar. "Who are you? Identify yourself!"
Katara recognized the voice, and a hesitant smile slipped into place. “Zu... ko?”
Zuko lit up two flames in each hand, still not recognizing her and getting into a fighting stance "Who are you! How do you know me?"
Katara rushed forward. “Zuko!!”
Zuko saw her, and de-lit his hands, standing up out of his fighting stance. He looked both delighted, and a little confused. "Katara!" Katara tackled him, practically crying already, as she threw her arms around him, and pressed her face into his shoulder.
Zuko held her close to him, snuggling her "Oh Katara."
Katara held him tight, shaking from the cold. “I was so worried about you…”
"I overheard what that man did to you. And I made him pay." Zuko held her tighter.
Katara winced. “I... ...I didn't want you to know.” She buried her face into his shoulder further, nuzzling her face against his shirt.
Zuko patted her hair "I'm glad I know, and I'm glad I made certain he will never rape anyone ever again."
Katara sort of smiled, but sighed. “But did you... have to torch the whole village?”
"I... may have gotten a little carried away..." Zuko blushed and shrugged.
Katara laughed a little. “It was nice to have someone get that guy back for me…” She pulled back from the hug and kissed his cheek, then realized she was naked. “errmm I should get dressed…”
Zuko smiled at her "do you have to?" He smirked, at her; she had pulled back enough for him to get a rather good look at her naked. Even if it was foggy, she was very close.
Katara bopped him on the head. “It’s sort of cold out.”
Zuko nuzzled her. "You know I can fix that, if you want me to." He smiled; being a fire bender was great.
Katara blushed. “Y-yeah well I ...told them I wouldn't be gone too long.” She nibbled at her bottom lip. “But if it’s alright with you…”
Zuko knelt down and dipped his hand into the water; steam began to rise from around it, mixing with the fog, and warming the air. He kept his palm placed just beneath the surface of the water, his knees getting splashed with the small waves of the lake as he smiled slightly up at her, marveling in her beauty. Katara was smiling at the steaming water before she caught him staring, blushed, and proceeded try to cover herself up.
Zuko chuckled. "So... what do you think of the blue spirit, or Lee, joining the avatar's team... I couldn't bear to have something like that happen to you again, and I can promise you, if I'm around, it won't." His promise sounded kind of like a bloody death threat directed at all those who might attempt to hurt her.
Katara stepped into the water, still blushing. “I’d love it, but what about Mr.Iroh.”
"Uncle can get along on his own, he's been thinking of opening a tea shop somewhere." Zuko swung his hand out across the surface of the lake sending heated water deeper out, and then shaking his hand off, some of the water evaporating due to his heat, some flinging off. "The real problem is which one to join as."
Katara wadded out a bit more then started washing off with the hot water. “I don't really know.” She looked up to jar out any thoughts.
"If I join as Lee, then I can at least talk and hold you... and things...." Zuko blushed thinking of Lee's ability to display his affection for her publicly. "But I'm not very well disguised. Where as if I join as the Blue Spirit, then I can't talk and I'd have to be totally indifferent to you."
Katara thought. “I want you to be safe, as Lee... I don't think that'll last to long. The Blue Spirit would be... the safest choice.” She sighed never really having been good with tough choices, she was all about compromise.
Zuko frowned "True, but it would also be... the most trying choice." Katara sighed sitting up, and looking around. "Wonder what happened to my mask... I may have lost it when..." stopped unsure of whether he should mention his fight with her rapist. "The village burned down, though Uncle may have picked it up." Katara turned and smiled at him, kind of just wanting to look at him and not say anything. She’d never really gotten the chance to just ‘look’ at him. They were always involved in fighting or more recently… doing other things…
Zuko thought, hands on his hips. He looked around, just sort of reflecting on where he was, and the massive amount of fire power he had just unleashed, and why he had done so, and what that meant about him, and as a general thing, his role in the universe, until he noticed her looking at him. "What?" Katara just smiled more and went back to bathing.
Zuko rolled his eyes. "I'm going to go see if Uncle kept my mask... don't go anywhere." He smiled at her, and walked off, heading back to his camp.
“I won't.” Katara smiled and splashed the warm water onto her shoulders it felt good to have that warmth wash over her sore muscles. Zuko almost skipped back to his camp, almost, he was happier, but he was still manly, for the most part.
Iroh look at his nephew, raising an eye brow "Zuko… What happened, you eat some strange plants or something?" He looked over Zuko, seemingly trying to look for any blemishes that a hallucination inducing plant might give.
Zuko chuckled. "No, nothing like that Uncle, say did you keep my Blue Spirit clothes"
"Yeah, they're a little burnt, but the mask and jumpsuit are in that bag." Iroh nodded to one next to Zuko's tent. "Afraid I couldn't find your broadswords though. Why?"
"I'm thinking of joining the Avatar's team." Zuko rummaged through the bag. He said this like it was nothing at all and was something that was perfectly natural for him to say.
Meanwhile Katara began to practice some water bending, but only a little before she stepped out of the water and shook off, drying on the shore of the lake, still humming to herself. ‘He’s alright, and he's joining us, this has got to be too good to be true’. She smiled to herself.
Zuko packed up his bag, the mask and jumpsuit going in on top of everything else.
Iroh nearly chocked on his tea. He coughed several times before he was able to speak again. "What! I mean I'm surprised; you're taking a big step, not only giving up on your chase for the Avatar, but joining him! Are you sure you're well lad?" He got up and walked over to him, checking his head for wounds, and his temperature.
Katara stood and walked to the water, letting her feet rest in the water.
"I'm fine uncle; I've finally found something more important than the Avatar. That's what you've always wanted for me right?" Zuko chuckled.
Iroh was still checking him over. "Well... yes, but this is just so sudden." he looked him in the eye. "You're not on anything are you Zuko?"
Katara smiled out at the fog, getting sort of anxious but not wanting to go traipsing off , she did say she wouldn't go anywhere after all.
"I'm not on anything uncle. Look you head on to Ba Sing Sae, open up your tea shop; I'll visit you when I can. Wish me luck Uncle" Zuko smiled at him taking his sack over his shoulder, and patting Iroh on the head, walking off toward where he had seen her.
"Well... Good Luck..." Iroh stared off very confused.
Katara was totally smitten, sitting down and letting the water wash over her as she closed her eyes.
Zuko trotted off toward her, walking up to her rather quickly "Hello, I'm back, and all packed."
Katara turned and smiled at him waving. “Is Mr.Iroh alright with it?” She stood dusting herself off and trotting up to him.
"He seemed, very... confused, but he was happy to see me happy." Zuko kissed her forehead affectionately. "So, how are we to do this, I just walk back with you from having a bath and they'll let me into your group? Personally I'd kick my ass." He smirked.
Katara grinned and went for her clothes. “Well you could pop in after I get back, wait for a good moment, explain something...” She started getting dressed, looking back at him trying to figure out how to get this to work.
"And how am I supposed to explain things, without talking They'd recognized my voice, if not as me, then as Lee. Oh but I do have this." Zuko reached into his back and pulled out a blue spirit wanted poster.
Katara tapped her chin. “Hrrrmmmm.....well we do have a lot to gain from you joining, and that poster would be a motive for you to want to be in a group for protection I suppose…” She was done dressing, covering her head with the towel.
"So. What I show up with the poster and hang around you guys helping out till you're ready to leave and then see if the others will let me in" Zuko shrugged, really having no idea how to join a group, he had always been his group, or owned his group, or lead it, or whatever, but never really joined a group.
“Yeah, and I can help out with them understanding, of course Sokka will be tough to talk into it, but I think it might work…”
"Alright, I'll show up at your camp... wait... where is your camp." He looked around, the fog still thick, though the rain had let up.
Katara pointed directly across. “We have a fire going so if you’re close you can find it.” She rubbed the back of her head. “Geez this is harder then I thought it would be.”
"Well, sneaking the avatar's arch enemy into his group without him noticing, Might be kind of hard." Zuko smiled chuckling a little. "Alright, I'll just head over there, and walk into your camp in about ten minuets, be surprised to see me."
“You know I will be.” Katara laughed and began to walk back to camp. Zuko set his sack down, and started to get into his Blue Spirit jumpsuit. Katara trotted back to camp, feeling lighter and happier then when she left, starting to walk again as she got closer to camp. Sokka smiled cooking three rather large fish over the fire.
Aang was munching on berries laying on Appa's back, sharing some with Momo "Oh Hey Katara!" He sat up and jumped over to her. "You look better"
Katara hugged Aang. “I feel great!”
Sokka blinked look over at her, a little surprised at her quick recovery. "Hey Katara... Check out the fish I caught." Aang hugged her back, happy to have her feeling better.
Katara looked over at the fish and dragged Aang over with her. “Geez Sokka what a catch, great job.” She smiled and sat down near the fire, she knew how much her brother liked it when others praised him, particularly about fishing.
"Well, what can I say, when you're a master fisherman like me, these bad boys are nothing but small fries." started acting like a master fisherman
Aang giggled as she dragged him over to look at the fish, and he sat down next to her. "Care for a berry?" He offered her some of his berries.
Katara took one and popped it into her mouth. “Thanks Aang. Well Master fisherman, don't get too carried away, or the fish are gonna start trying to catch you.” She poked Sokka.
"Oh they can try, they can try... muahahahah! Haahahahah!" Sokka laughed manically.
"You’re weird Sokka." Aang munched on his berries. Momo jumped over and munched on berries out of Aang's hand.
