It was the constant knocking on her door that pulled Katara from her wonderful dream about being home again. She lazily threw the blankets back and slowly rolled from the bed as the knocking grew more demanding. With her eyes closed, she reached out to grab her robe from the chair beside her bed. Instead of grabbing it, she pushed it from the chair and it fell to the ground. The knocking continued and she stumbled towards the door using her cloudy memory to guide her.
After fumbling to find the knob, Katara opened her eyes to open the door. The sight that greeted her made to sleep rush from her body. There before her door, stood a very pregnant woman with tears running down her face.
Sounds of concerned voices reached Katara’s ears as the woman quickly led her towards the front hall. Men and woman ran in and out of the hall carrying bandages and water. She knew then that something was very wrong. The woman’s pull on her arm became more insistent the closer they came to the door.
They littered the front hall. Bodies of men from the Emperor’s army covered with cuts and blood lay side by side on the floor. Many healers from the surrounding city were already attending to most of the wounded but that was not what the woman wanted her to see and she continued pulling Katara deeper into the hall towards the body that had the most serious of injuries.
Katara immediately kneeled beside the groaning man with the deep wound on his chest. There were other cuts on his body but this was her main concern. The woman kneeled next her weeping silently as she stroked the man’s forehead. Katara gently laid her hands upon the man’s chest and began to concentrate on healing him. She closed her eyes and tuned out the sounds of pain and sorrow that filled the room. The power within her filled her body and flowed through her hands and into the body of the injured man.
Zuko wrapped the arm of one of his captain’s as a healer working on the same man sewed up the wound on his leg. His men were ambushed by a group of rebels during a routine border patrol that night. About 300 rebels attacked the group of fifty men none escaped unscaved but all were alive so far.
The man slept soundly after the healer gave him medicine to drink before sewing him up. The emperor frowned as he looked around the room. This was the worse attack so far. He would have an audience with Captain Hoi tonight after making sure his men were going to live.
Zhao walked toward the Emperor holding a cloth to his head. “We have taken care of the lesser injuries and more healers are coming from the city as I speak.”
Zuko looked up at his commander and nodded. “See to your wound then meet me in the prison we will talk to Hoi tonight and…”
She caught his eye. She was kneeling on the floor just past Zhao. She was healing one of the seriously injured men dressed in only her nightdress. Zuko rose and walked towards Zhao.
“Tend to your wound commander I will come for you when I am ready. “ Zhao bowed and walked away.
He was silent watching her bring the man from the brink of death and back into life. His mute wife stroking his forehead smiled as her husband's eyes opened and looked at her. His hand reached out to touch her bulging belly. Katara feeling the strength of the man returning lessened her power and opened her eyes. Zuko was there staring at her.
“How do you feel?” He asked staring into her blue eyes.
She nodded at him and he extended his hand to her and helped her stand. A healer came to clean the blood from the man she healed.
Her strength was waning due to the lack of sleep and exhaustion that filled her body. There were ten mortally wounded men left to heal. She healed about eight of them before the healers from the city arrived. Xin fu led them inside the hall. Sokka directed one specifically to the man his sister was tending. He could see the exhaustion in her body as she leaned over the body. The emperor gently wiped her forehead of sweat and received a small smile of appreciation. Another pair of hands came to rest upon the chest of the man and Katara opened her eye to see a woman smiling at her.
“You have done enough now go rest.”
Katara slowly pulled her hands away and tried to stand but her legs were weak. Strong arms surrounded her and lifted her to her feet. She stared into the golden eyes of Zuko as he held her tight to his body.
“I will take her back to her room Emperor.”
Xin fu stepped closer to them and reached for the water maiden. Katara could feel the sudden heat envelope her body as Zuko stared at his sister’s advisor.
“That will not be necessary Xin fu.”
Katara straightened herself and slightly pulled away from Zuko. “I am fine and I can make it back myself.” She tried to make her legs obey what she wanted but they failed to move under her body as she pushed her weight forward. His arms tightened around her and she found herself against Zuko’s body again.
Humiliation filled her body when he swept her up into his arms. She was not some weak woman that needed to be carried to her room. She tried to struggle from his grip but her body would not obey her.
“You are exhausted Katara and in no condition to walk anywhere. You have done so much for my men let me do this for you.”
He did not like the way she relaxed in his arms; placing one hand on his chest as she laid her head upon it. Her other arm lay around the back of his neck. He swore he saw the emperor breathe in the scent of her hair as he adjusted her in his arms. Zuko’s decision was already made the moment she stepped from the ship. Xin fu bowed and moved aside as Zuko walked by him carrying the water maiden.
He watched them disappear from the hall with two of the emperor’s body guards following. Zuko had an advantage over him, he was the Emperor, and his word was law. He would have to be more aggressive in his efforts if he wanted to take the maiden from him. Of course, all of his efforts would be unseen. He could not risk open warfare and keep his head. He would use his superior mind to get what he wanted.
“Xin fu”
The voice of the guard pulled the advisor from his plotting and he looked at the man before him holding some paper.
“We found this on one of the rebels. Zhao told me to give it to you.”
Fu took the letter and looked it over. He did not recognize the hand writing but he would find the author of that Zhao knew.“Leave this with me and I will do all I can to find the traitor among us.”
The guard bowed as the advisor turned and walked from the hall wearing a sly smile. He held in his hand the answer to all his problems.
The moonlight shone through the large windows along the hallway as he carried her to her room. The beating of his heart began to lull her into sleep. It no longer mattered to her that she was in the arms of someone she hated. She just wanted to get to her bed by any means necessary.
“That was a selfless act you preformed tonight.”
She felt his chest rumble beneath her cheek as he spoke.“Anyone who has this power would do what I did.”
She felt his grip tighten. “Your heart has compassion. Jai and his wife will be forever grateful to you. Perhaps they will name the child after you.”
Katara smiled. “So now I have two.”
Zuko chuckled. “So it a natural reaction from you to have this selfless heart and help those in need. A good mother would have to have such a quality.”
Mother, she hoped he was not looking at her for that position. She had plans of own which did not involve laying on her back for Zuko.
“That is what the other women are here for emperor. I am sure they all have those qualities you speak of me having.”
“I am sure they do possess them but yours are felt and seen without being forced.”
She was becoming uncomfortable in his arms especially when she looked up to see that mocking smile on his face. He wanted her to be uncomfortable.
One of the guards following them opened the door to her room and he carried her inside.
The soft bedding touched her back as he lowered her to the bed. He lingered there with one knee on her bed and his face close to hers staring down into her questioning blue eyes. His one time enemy was still as beautiful as he remembered even at this distance, just a kiss away. His eyes slowly moved down her body that he still held in his arms. The nightdress that clung to her body had blood on it.
His eyes returned to hers and found her staring at him, at his burn. She remembered he told her that he would never allow a healer to heal him. This burn would remind him that no one could be trusted even those you were to love.
The softness he was feeling began to fade as those words he spoke to her echoed in his head. He released her onto the bed and removed himself from it.
“I will send a servant with water so you can bathe before you sleep.”
She heard the coldness in his voice when just a moment ago it looked as if he would kiss her. His actions confused her even more but she was sure the exhaustion she felt contributed to it also. She nodded at him and watched the blue robes fly up as he turned to leave.
Katara sat up as he turned back to face her. “You are excused from breakfast. I will have it sent to your room when you wake.”
“Thank you.”
He nodded but continued to stare at her laying there looking relaxed and watching him. He could not leave her in this condition.
“Yes you do have the qualities of a good mother.” The guard moved aside as the Emperor walked towards the door wearing a smile after seeing the shocked and horrified expression on Katara’s exhausted face.
