Chapter 6
The class was making get-well cards to send to Kenny. Stan wondered if they knew how pointless that was, if they knew Kenny would never get better. Watching the other students draw pictures and write letters of well-wishing to someone who would never get well made Stan's heart ache. He blinked back tears and raised his hand shakily. “Ms. Choksondik? May I go see the counselor?”
“Sure Stan. I'll give you a hall pass.”
Stan took the pass and walked down the hallway to Mr. Mackey's office. He didn't really want to talk, but he knew he could sit there and cry without feeling stupid. He knocked on the office door.
“Come in.”
“Hi, Mr. Mackey.”
“Stan?” The big-headed counselor looked up from his desk. “You're worried about Kenny, aren't you.”
He nodded, and sat down on the couch next to the desk. “I don't know what to do. I saw him at the hospital yesterday and he looked terrible.” He buried his face in his hands. “I know you said he needs me to be strong, but I just couldn't see him that way and I ran away. I ran out of the room without even talking to him. I'm a horrible friend.”
“Stanley, listen to me, m'kay? Seeing a friend who's sick is a difficult thing. There's nothing wrong with being upset that your little friend is dying, m'kay. Its normal to feel scared and hurt right now. But at the same time, you need to understand that Kenny needs your support right now, m'kay? You should go see him and let him know you care about him.”
“I can't do it!” Stan burst into tears, sobbing into his hands. It just wasn't fair. Kenny was a good guy, a good friend. He was eight fucking years old, he couldn't be dying. After he had run home from the hospital the day before, Stan had done some research on Kenny's illness. Most of the information he'd found was incomprehensible, but what he could understand scared him. Kenny would never get better and there was nothing that could be done for him. One of his closest friends was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it. This was almost as bad as when Kyle had been dying. Worse, in some ways. For Kyle, at least, there had been hope, a cure. All Kenny had was a ticking clock with nothing to stop it.

Eric Cartman stood outside the door of Kenny's hospital room and steeled himself. This would be the last time he saw Kenny for a while. In just a few hours, he would begin his trip to Washington and his campaign to legalize stem-cell research, in hopes of finding a cure before his best friend's time ran out. He hoped Kenny could hold on long enough for him to succeed. In his hands he clutched a small, flat object, wrapped clumsily in newspaper. He knocked, then pushed open the door.
Kenny was awake and watching television. In front of him was a tray of hospital food, the contents of which were largely undisturbed, save for a half-eaten cup of jell-o cubes. Kenny turned off the set when he heard the door open, and turned to face his friend.
“Hi, Cartman.”
“Hey, Kenny.” Cartman shuffled over to the chair beside the bed and sat down. “I got you something.” He held out his gift and nervously watched Kenny unwrap it. “Its by that Bocelli guy. I thought you might like it.”
Kenny skimmed the back of the CD, reading off the tracks. When he'd started studying music the year before, Andrea Bocelli had been his greatest inspiration. The first song he'd learned to truly sing was “Con Te Partiro,” and a duet version with Sarah Brightman was on this CD. He grinned at Cartman. “Thanks. It's great.”
“Yeah?” The words “you're welcome,” weren't really in Cartman's vocabulary, mostly because he'd never had had an opportunity to say them before. Instead he just smiled back.
“So what are you doing here? Don't you have school?” Kenny asked, still looking at the CD case.
“No, dude. I'm leaving on a trip tonight.” Eric looked down at his lap, hoping Kenny would understand.
“A trip? Now?” Kenny looked stricken, “what for?” His blue eyes expressed his feelings of sadness and betrayal. Why would Cartman leave him at a time like this?
“I'm going to Washington, Kenny. This guy I know said stem-cells could help you. I'm gonna try to lift the ban on stem-cell research so the doctors can find you a cure.” He looked his friend in the eye, fierce determination on his pudgy face. “I made you a promise and I'm gonna keep it. I'm not gonna let you die.”
Kenny blinked at Eric in shock. Somehow the fat boy had gone from being a complete asshole to a true friend. A smile passed across his face, followed by sadness. “Cartman. I've only been here for three days. The doctor won't tell me anything, but I think this disease has already managed to do damage that should have taken years.” Kenny pulled down his hood so he could speak more clearly. “I'll be honest with you, Eric. I don't know how long I have.”
“Just hold on, okay?”
The breathing machine hissed as Kenny took a breath. “I'll try, Cartman.”
“I'm gonna do my best to fight for you, Kenny. Just hang on until I get back. You're going to beat this.”
“Don't...don't stay away too long.” he said softly. “I'd like to have my friends by my side when the time comes.”
“Don't talk like that, Kenny, you're not going to die. I'll be back as soon as I can.” Cartman stood up to leave, then paused. “I know its been a long time, and we're not friends the same way we used to be, but...” he slipped a hand under the neck of his shirt and withdrew a silver pendant. “I still wear this.”
A flash of silver at Kenny's neck was all the answer he needed. Best friends forever. “See you soon.” Cartman refused to use the word “goodbye.”
“Yeah. Soon,” Kenny echoed.
Cartman gritted his teeth. Kenny looked so weak. But no, he couldn't think about that now. From here on out, he needed to focus on what he had to do.
End Chapter 6.
Gah, that chapter didn't come out quite as well as I'd hoped. I may end up re-writing it later, but I suppose it'll do for now. The next chapter should be up soon, and its going to have just a little bit of Kenny/Kelly mushiness over the phone. I thought her character was really sweet back in season three, and we never found out what happened between the two of them after the Rainforest incident, so I decided to write a little about that. Hopefully it'll come out more or less in character. Also, I'm planning a bit of songfic for an upcoming chapter, and I'm also working on another story centered around Kyle.
That said, midterms are coming up, so there might not be anything new for a week or two after this next chapter. Thanks for reading!
