CHAPTER 5: ESCAPE
Mulan stopped and hid behind one of the two, Fu Dog statues, mounted in front of a tall gate of heavy wood and iron hinges. Two guards had been posted at opposite sides of the massive gates. She spied the shadow of a third guard, posted at the curve of the gate, as it extended off to the left. She saw several more guards, patrolling the parapet overlooking the inner courtyard. Mulan turned and slumped against the statue. How am I going to get through that door? And climbing the wall isn’t an option.
Suddenly, a clamor of male voices broke through the night. “He’s escaped! Stay alert!” A voice called down to the men posted below them. “How did he manage that? I thought the doctor was suppose to fix that?” “I don’t know. But they’ll get him.”
Movement to her left, caught her attention. A large shadow was creeping steadily towards the lone guard off to her left. She picked up a stone and threw it towards the men at the gate. “What was that?” One of them asked. “I don’t know.” Mulan quickly slipped past the statue and planted herself against the curve of the wall. She heard a horrible crunching sound and a muffled cry of pain. Then a thud. The sound repeated itself. The large shape quickly sped away from the wall. A terrible thought filled her head as she stealthily moved further towards the left side.
Mulan stifled a cry of surprise as she came upon the bodies of the guards. They were laying on the ground with their heads twisted at grotesque angles. A small, oval shaped door stood off behind them. That was probably how Shan Yu got out. She heard more shouting from within the gate. “I think he went this way!” Someone called out from above her. She had to get out of here, or she would be caught. She started to go and then stopped as an idea came to her. She turned back and looked down at the body of the guard.
Shan Yu quickly slipped between an alleyway that intersected two buildings. He stopped and took a deep breath. He was in excellent physical condition for his people. But his enormous size was not meant for endurance. His sharp senses picked up the chaotic sounds of frantic voices approaching. He quickly peered around the corner of the alleyway he had just come down. The shadows of men swept passed the narrow opening. The glint of metal reflecting the sharp halberds they were carrying. Shan Yu had to find a way out of the City, it was not safe for him.
A lone soldier, hanging back from the knot of men tearing up the street halted by the narrow slip between the two white faced structures. Something had been moving down that way. A knot of fear gripped her throat as she headed down the alleyway. It was dark and she only had a lantern. Not to mention her knife, which she had no idea how to use. She was not the trained fighter Shan Yu was.
Shan Yu narrowed his eyes. A single figure with a lantern was moving towards him. This one was either very clever or very stupid. He had been clever enough to risk coming down hear in thinking Shan Yu might be here. But very stupid to risk it alone and with a bright light marking his approach. He allowed himself a grim smile. Fool!
Wait a minute. This is too easy. Nobody could be that stupid! This path goes off to the right. There’s probably an opening there too. He’s probably a decoy. Any minute the guards might come.
Shan Yu would not wait for them either. He quickly scanned the area around him. There were several crates stacked nearby. They did not collapse when he stood on them to reach the ledge of the red tiled roof. Standing on tip toes, he managed to grab the edge of the eaves. After several tries, he was able to haul himself up and onto the roof. He lay still for a moment. His hearing alert for footsteps.
The footsteps were rather clumsy for a soldier. And light. Not heavy, like the weight of a full bodied man. Was he being chased by a boy? Shan Yu carefully turned and peered over the ledge. The shadow that had been outlined from the glow of the lamp was very small. The uniform he was wearing seemed ill fitting. It hung too loosely against his tiny frame.
His hearing then picked up the sound of many rapid feet approaching his direction. Shan Yu counted the feet of at least 5 men.
The lantern bobbing furiously as the small soldier shifted frantically from right to left. Shan Yu could smell fear, flowing off the boy like the heat from a fire. Shan Yu was puzzled as the soldier quickly ran over to the same pile of crates he had just climbed onto. Then dash the lantern to the ground, extinguishing the glow. What in the? Then, the shadow scrambled up the boxes. The figure leaped several times at the ledge. But did not have enough height to reach it. The third time spelled disaster as the crates spilled, tumbling the boy with it. He landed hard and stifled a moan of pain.
There was something odd happening here. Shan Yu thought. He had half a mind to leave him there. He couldn’t take the chance. This could still be a trap. Putting out that light could be a signal to the others. The shouts were getting nearer. The soldier was rapidly stacking the crates again. Shan Yu realized he had no choice. He had to assist him, or they would find him up here.
Mulan’s eyes widened as something incredibly strong tugged on her collar. She found herself being hauled up and roughly flung onto her back. The force knocked the breath from her. A shadow moved over her as a heavy weight pressed against her. Fierce golden eyes fixed her with a cold stare. The stare took her back to the scene at the waterfall. She opened her mouth to speak but a large hand covered it. “If you so much as make a sound. I will snap your neck and leave your body for the vultures to find. Do you understand?” The Chinese was flawless. The words vicious, precise. She had never heard Shan Yu speak so coldly before. The words rumbled out to her as smooth and quiet as if she had been caressed with silk. Yet it vibrated through her body like distant thunder. It sent a shiver of fear up her spine. The first time she had encountered him. She had not feared him.
She nodded her head. “Good. Now keep still.” He ordered. For a brief moment, a known scent entered his nostrils. A brief image of remembrance flashed through his mind. He quickly dismissed it as he turned his focus onto the soldiers spilling into the open space.
Strange sensations filled her as she lay still beneath Shan Yu’s thick body. He shifted once to get a better vantage point and the movement caused his chest to rub against her breasts. It brought a tingling sensation to the ends of her breasts which made them stiffen. She also felt something thick and oddly shaped digging into her groin. When he shifted a second time, it put it right between her legs. The space between her legs grew moist and warm. Every movement he made, forced the whatever it was that was in his pants to push further against her groin. Pleasant sensations vibrated pleasantly through her entire body. She did not want him to move.
“Where is he then?” One said angrily to his men. “He gave us the slip.” Another answered. A loud sigh. “Alright. Let’s go back to the Courtyard and round up some more men. We’re not going to get him this way. We need at least two search parties.” The leader said ordering his men back out the way he came. “It’s our heads if we don’t find him before his trial tomorrow.” Shan Yu shook his head and sighed silently to himself. Idiots!
He turned his awareness back to his captive. There was something different about the soldier lying stiffly beneath him. He didn’t feel hard the way a soldier should feel. A long bladed steel is heavy and requires a bit of strength to wield. There should have been some muscle tone.
And when he had leaned deeply against the slight body beneath him. There had been a depression of something soft, like resting one’s head on a pile of furs; Followed by something firm poking at his chest. The familiarity of it, brought distracting thoughts to him of a sensual nature. And when he had shifted again, his cock should have touched a similar one. What he touched was a valley. Shan Yu grinned wickedly. There was no mistaking what he had.
He leaned close to her neck. Inhaling deeply of her. So pure! Her fear! The scent of a girl on the verge of being a woman. He knew it was dangerous to linger when the entire force would soon be out searching for him. But he couldn’t help it. He had already started something in her. He could smell the feminine oils from between her legs. Pure curiosity was sparking her desire. It was an intoxicating combination and one which was beginning to overwhelm his normally iron will.
A large hand began to slid up the folds of her tunic. The hand stopped gently against one of the small mounds. A small circle motion with a finger tip, and the end of her breast stiffened further. A deep smile spread across her face.
He brushed her neck lightly with his lips. A small moan slipped from her mouth. He parted her legs easily with a strong thigh. He rubbed his groin gently against her vagina. She spread her legs further in eagerness as he pressed the full weight of his manhood against her. He caressed her cheek with his lips. Guided by her instincts and innate curiosity, she turned her face to meet his lips. He sealed them to hers. There was something familiar about her. That scent!!!
Shan Yu’s body shuddered as the chill wind of familiarity blew through him. The intensity of the moment draining from him as if a hole in his body had opened up. He quickly forced himself away from her. What the hell had he been thinking? Shan Yu was a man with dignity. He didn’t do it just anywhere. Has it been that long? “Mulan?” He whispered in astonishment.
“Wha...Huh?...Why did you stop?” She asked half-dazed. Shan Yu could see the crimson staining her cheeks. Her eyes reflecting she was still in the moment. Why had he been so eager to touch her? And why had she let him? The first time he had encountered her, she had been trying to fight off two men who had grabbed her. “I am sorry Mulan. It was foolish of me.” He said. He watched as her eyes refocused on him. Her cheeks draining of color as a look of disappointment crossed her face. He regretted his brash act.
“What are you doing out by yourself?” He asked harshly. He changed his tone in the hopes it would distract her. “I found out that they had captured you. I wanted to help.” She said somewhat meekly. “That was a foolish thing to do. You could have been killed.” He scolded. Mulan tilted her head back. Her eyes flaring up in anger. How dare he talk to me like he was my father? Shan Yu watched as she shifted into a haughty position. Good, she was clearly distracted. But he had to admire her courage. And changing into the clothes of a guard had been a smart idea. He idly wondered where she had gotten them from.
“I tried to get my father to help, but as far as he was concerned. The only good Hun was a dead one. Even if you did save my life.” Shan Yu grabbed her arm firmly. “Hey, let go.” Mulan complained. “You promised you wouldn’t speak of that!” She finally shrugged herself free. “I didn’t say anything about your village! Or why you were there! I just told him that you....” “Alright. Forget it. I’m taking you home and then....” “No!” Mulan said firmly. “I have a horse waiting for us. You saved me from those men and I am here to return the favor!”
Shan Yu was annoyed. He was grateful for her help. But in truth, he didn’t really need it. And having her along would put her and her family in danger. He didn’t want that. He didn’t want anyone risking themselves for him. Especially Mulan. Shan Yu paused. Now why was he acting so protective of her all of a sudden. He sighed mightily and looked towards the sky. Why do the Spirits insist on making my life difficult! “Fine, since you insist. But we’ll stick to the rooftops. It will be safer.”
“The rooftops?” Mulan repeated uneasily. Shan Yu caught her swallowing and he grinned ferally at her. “The rooftops. And you better not slow me down.” Mulan watched in amazement as he spanned the space of the roof nearest them, as if he were a cat. He landed near soundlessly on the other side. He beckoned to Mulan. She peered over the ledge of the roof and looked down. She took a step back to clear the dizziness in her head. They were a lot higher up then she thought.
“Don’t look down Mulan. You can make it. I know you can.” His voice carried across the distance on a current of wind. Strong and powerful, yet comforting. “I’ll catch you. You know I won’t let anything happen to you.” Mulan stepped a few paces back. She took a deep breath then ran forward. She launched herself off the ledge and hurled herself across. A chill ran through her body as soon as her feet touched air. A strong arm wrapped around her waist and she landed hard against Shan Yu.
For a moment, Mulan didn’t move. She rested her head against his chest. Her heart beating loudly in the silence. Shan Yu placed a long finger under her chin and tilted her face up to his. He looked down at her mouth. The first time he had tasted her lips. It reminded him of sweet nectar. He wanted so much to drink of them again. Mulan looked up at him. Her eyes granting him silent permission. Shan Yu turned away. They didn’t have time to dally. Already, he could hear the sounds of men massing for him. “Come on.” He said. “They’re getting close.” Mulan felt a short stab of pain. Why was he always turning away from her? And why did it bother her so?
Shan Yu stopped on one of the roofs. His gaze floating across the sea of rooftops, beyond the pagoda shaped roof of the Imperial Palace to the distant mountains. Behind them, the dark canvas of night, was littered with the twinkle of stars. But in front, the merging dawn was spreading across the sky like spilled dye of a blueish hue. For a brief period, neither of them moved or said anything as they took in the breathtaking scene. The white, snow capped peaks of the Tung Shao Pass. The slopes disappearing beneath the tree lined forests below. The golden yellow arc of light peering over the peaks.
Shan Yu moved forward and stretched his arms skyward. Mulan watched curiously as he inhaled deeply. Held it in for a few seconds then let it out slowly. For a moment, it appeared to Mulan as if his body were outlined in light. She shook her head and the aura faded. He turned back to her. There was something strange in his eyes. They appeared to be glowing deeper then normal. “Come. I have been energized.” He said. And without explaining anything further, He continued on his way.
Mulan had to admit. She was getting the hang of leaping from roof to roof. And the exhilaration! she experienced from it. This was certainly more fun then learning to cook or feeding the chickens. So focused she was on the fun she was having that she miscalculated the distance of a jump. She screamed out his name as her hands grabbed at air instead of the ledge.
A powerful hand clasped her wrist hard. The force slammed her, mid-section first against the ledge. Mulan cried out in pain as her body went limp within in his grip. She felt herself dip as the force of catching her yanked Shan Yu down. Shan Yu hauled her effortlessly up. “Mulan?” He asked shaking her gently. “Shan?” She whispered weakly. She looked up into his handsome face. “Are you alright? You took that hard.” There was genuine concern in his voice. She gripped one of Shan Yu’s massive forearms and hauled herself to her feet. She steadied herself then walked a few paces. A knot of pain gripped her stomach but she did not fall. “I’m a little sore but I’ll be ok.”
“Alright. We should be ahead of them now. We’ll travel the rest of the way on the ground. You remember which way your horse is?” She nodded her head. Shan Yu leaned over the ledge on the other side of the roof they were on. Several silk banners were hanging beneath him. They looked long enough that that they nearly reached the ground. Good, he wouldn’t have far to jump when he let go. He searched along the eaves with his hand for the supports. The banners had been mounted on a long pole running lengthwise underneath the roof’s eaves. He jostled it. It had been secured firmly in place. He gestured to Mulan. “Climb onto my back.” She looked curiously at him at first. “Come on, we don’t have much time. It will be light soon.”
Mulan mounted his backside. She clasped her hands around his neck. She sighed quietly as her cheek brushed up against his broad backside. Her nostrils flared as she inhaled his musky body odor. “Hold tight.” He said quietly grinning wickedly at her over his shoulder as he leaped over the side.
Mulan felt a rush of air. Her stomach dropped from under her. She closed her eyes tightly and dug her face deeper into the folds of his tunic as he slid down the banner. Mulan was jolted hard as Shan Yu let go and jumped the rest of the way down.
Shan Yu was still as he tried to pry Mulan’s hands from around his neck. “We’re down now. You can let go.” He growled in annoyance. Mulan slid off of him. “This way.” She said trying to catch her breath. Shan Yu chuckled. “You look paler then a ghost.” He teased as he followed her up the passageway.
Shan Yu and Mulan halted within an alleyway that met the main road that led into town. They hid behind a pile of broken carts that someone had erected as a crude gate. Four guards were posted several feet from them. Shan Yu could take at least two of them. But he wouldn’t be able to get them all. And it would only take one to raise the alarm. He looked down at the slight figure dressed in the uniform. She was courageous and full of life. But she was no fighter. She would not be able to do much against the other two.
“My horse is just beyond those trees.” “Your horse is still there? For as long as you’ve been gone?” He asked in disbelief. “I trained him well. Besides, if he had left. He would have returned home. Khan would not let anyone else ride him.” Shan Yu smiled approvingly at her. She had the soul of a Hun. A pity she was Chinese. “I have an idea.” She said. This should be interesting!
“Hey there! I’ve found him!” Mulan shouted in as rough of a voice as she could muster. “Come out where we can see you!” One of the four ordered. “He’s really heavy! I could use a hand with him.” Mulan shot back. “Look, I don’t...” “Get your lazy rears moving and come here and help me! I won’t be able to subdue him again if he should wake up! He nearly got away from me the first time! And if he gets away again. You’ll have to explain why to your Captain!” Mulan warned sounding as authoritative as she could. Mulan moved into the growing light of the dawn, showing them the uniform, but not too much that they would be able to identify her as female.
“Alright, alright. We’re coming.” Another groaned in irritation. “You stay here.” One of the guards said to the fourth one behind him. “Suits me fine.” He leaned on his halberd. So bored that he was, that he failed to sense the shadow looming large behind him. He felt a strong hand cover his mouth and he was yanked into the bushes behind him.
Mulan had disappeared behind a pile of discarded barrels and crates stacked up against the wall, as the three remaining guards kicked and pushed the broken cart pieces out of their path. “Hey! Where’s the body?” One of them asked when they didn’t see one. A glint of metal reflected off the approaching dawn from within the bushes. Ripples, marked the passing of something incredibly long and sharp as it tore through the air. An alert guard heard the strange sound and turned too late, as a sharp point pierced the silk of his shirt and penetrated the flesh beneath. His cry of pain came out garbled as he spit up blood.
“What in the...?” The two men whirled around towards the source of the attack. The second soldier’s eyes lit up in shock, as an enormous shadow with fierce golden eyes, bore down on him. Something shiny and small whizzed past his ear. “It’s....” He began. His shout was strangled as something sharp slide across his neck. The third guard had no chance. He feel wordlessly to the ground. Shan Yu pulled the knife he had just thrown out of the final guard’s back.
Mulan moved slowly into the light. Her eyes taking in the scene. The looks of pain and shock on their faces horrified her. She looked up at Shan Yu. His eyes were hard. Narrowed in focus. Fierce in intent. Mulan thought she glimpsed a cruel, triumphant smile on his broad face. He turned his head to face her. For a moment, he seemed to be looking through her. Past her. She shrank back from him ever so slightly. The moment passed. And the ferocious glow in his eyes faded. He turned his focus back onto her. He smiled down at her. “Come Mulan. We have to go.” Shan Yu said gently. He could not return her to her home now. He would have to bring her with him. “I will not leave you here for the guards to find.”
Mulan did not know what to do. She had made a mistake in coming here. She had not realized the extent required to get him out. The things that she had seen. Taking that dead man’s uniform. And it turned out, he didn’t really need her help. He had done fine without her. And with the guards death. She had no way to explain any of this. She had made a promise to him. And since she left her home in defiance of her father. And Shan Yu insisted he was not leaving without her. She had no choice. She had to see this through. She was now along for the ride.
The shouting behind her finalized her decision. She accepted his outstretched hand. Forgive me father!
An elderly woman suddenly sat up. Her heart pounding. Sweat pouring down her face. She quickly slung her robe around her, climbed into her slippers and raced for Mulan’s room. She tried the handle. It was locked! She rapped loudly on the wood. “Mulan?” There was no answer. She knocked again. Louder and with more force. “Mulan!” She had a nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach. She was joined in the hallway by Fa Zhou.
“What’s wrong?” He asked tiredly. “Mulan is not in her room. And the door is locked.” Fa Zhou’s eyes widened in shock. She wouldn’t? No. I forbade her to interfere! “The window.” He said heading for the front door. He drew his robe tighter to him as the chill of the morning air bit at his flesh and flared up his old war injury, making his quick steps painful. He peeked into his daughter’s window.
The room was empty. The bed made up. Grimacing in pain, he climbed through the open window. He quickly unlocked the door. Mulan’s grandmother began searching her closet. “Her traveling clothes are missing.” She said puzzedly. They were joined by Fa Li. “What is going on here?” Fa Zhou looked toward the barn. The door was closed but he knew Khan would not be in there. Mulan would not leave him behind.
