Chapter Six.
Dead and missing.
Joanna was pissed off at her father, who once again told her she could not walk when she asked him if she could. "I'll tell you this, father. I can walk. Watch this!" Joanna pushed herself to a standing position and started to walk around the recreation room of the Pit.
General Brantley was stunned when he saw his daughter walking again. He finally found his voice as he roared. "What the hell have they been putting into your head? If you walk, you will shatter your legs!"
"Dad, I have been walking for the past six months, my legs are not going to shatter by walking on them."
He looked furious at her as she walked around the room, almost dancing in a way. “You lied to me, the doctors said you couldn't walk ever,”
"I didn’t lie! I just didn't tell you! You had lied to me about Golden Starbright's leg being shattered, when it was a simple broken bone which could have been repaired. Why did you lie to me about his leg being shattered when it was not?" Joanna yelled. "I was always able to walk, dad. You just didn't let me walk when my doctor told me that my legs were fine,"
“You don't need to be wasting your time with horses,”
"My time with my horses was the only thing that truly gave me pleasure! I was this close to becoming an Olympic rider!" Joanna yelled, holding her fingers up to show how close she was.
“You don't need any of that the only thing you have is me in this world and don't you forget that!”
"Oh I need more than being around you all the time, father. This is still a free country!" Joanna stated, as she headed towards the recreation door with him following.
He grabbed her arm. "We will finish this conversation at home. Now," He hauled or dragged Joanna, down the hallway to the carport where he got into his car and drove back home.
~~~~~
It was five days after Joanna was hauled off the base by her father. He refused to return to the base. He yelled at Joanna each time he saw her walking around the house. It was a constant arguing between the two. Joanna finally had enough of his yells and took to jogging in the mornings and evenings for couple hours each time. It kept her from blowing up at him. Got her to think about what she was going to do when the Three Day Trials came up again.
Joanna liked jogging in the early morning hours, about an hour before the sun would rise. She knew her father would not understand her desire to ride horses again or to walk again.
After what had happened, she wanted to get back onto her horses and ride. She would ride after she finished her morning jog for three hours to her father's disgust.
It was two weeks of them not talking to each other when she walked into her father’s office and leaned against the door frame.
“I don’t know why you are so against me riding horses again and trying to be an Olympic rider, dad,” said Joanna.
The General turned and looked at her. "I never told you what really claimed your mother's life when you were a baby, Joanna. I think it is high time you learned the truth,"
"And it deals with horses, correct?"
"Yes,"
"So what happened to my mom, dad?"
"She was riding her favorite horse in the woods beyond our borders; her horse stumbled and threw her. I never knew what happened till she didn't return that evening. I went looking for her and I found her with her mare standing there waiting for her to get up and get on her back again. I called out to her but she didn't stir or anything. I went to her side and found out that she was dead, a blow to the head, killed her." General Brantley stated.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Joanna asked.
"I couldn't tell you the truth about her death being in a riding accident so I told you she had an accident in town and died. I didn't know you were going to take after her with her love of horses," Brantley stated.
“Dad, I forgive you for trying to protect me from the dangers of horses but I love them and they’ll always be a part of my life,” Joanna stated. She wondered if he would go with her on her morning jog. “Want to go jogging with me, dad?”
The general smiled. “Sure why not honey,”
"Okay, I'll wait for you," Joanna said, as she headed for the laundry room to get two small towels for both of them.
They went on the road doing a light jog not really taking it hard for about another ten minutes when their bodies warmed up to the movements that they were doing and started to speed things up. Joanna waved to a neighbor before they jogged on. She thought it was strange that she was out so early that morning. She shook it off as nothing as the day was expected to get hot.
Joanna did see the white van parked up ahead and was going to suggest to her father that they should turn around here and head the other way. But she knew it would look like she was afraid of something.
They continued on jogging past the white van. Joanna looked over at it to see it empty. ‘They must have run out of gas,’ She kept jogging on never realizing that the driver appeared in the driver’s seat and started the van.
The lady, who was in the garden stepped into her home and about five minutes later, came out in shock as she went racing down the road to find a man on the street, bleeding badly from a wound. Her fingers raced over her phone calling the police. “I want to report a shooting! A man has been shot! He’s bleeding really badly. I don’t know if he’s dead or not!”
About twenty minutes later and after the ambulance took the man that was in the road to the hospital. As the detectives were interviewing the woman, the radio came to life to state that it was now a homicide instead of attempted murder.
“Was there anyone else jogging with him when you saw him before he was found shot?” asked the police officer.
“He was jogging with a young lady. I believe it was his daughter but I didn’t see her run by or anything,” stated the old lady.
That made the officer scratch his head as he examined the scene for any sign of her, then he found scuff marks on the ground like someone was being dragged off fighting into a waiting vehicle and then the person or persons drove away at a high rate of speed. “I’m going to the murdered man’s home.” He said to the other officer. But mentally he wondered. ‘I am hoping that the daughter raced into the woods but by how everything looks I doubt it. I think this case is turning into a homicide and kidnapping case.’
It was not too long before he found out that the man dead was a General and found the base name of which he was based at. He took the photo of the dead man and possibly that of his daughter from the house and headed to the military base where he would be able to put several pieces together and solve who could have taken the daughter and killed the General.
Hawk had called in Duke and Flint after he heard what happened from the police detective. “Flint, Duke, this is Detective Mores. He believes that one of our General has been killed and his daughter kidnapped.”
Detective Mores showed them the picture of the General and saw them nod their heads and then he showed them the picture of the missing daughter. “Is that his daughter?”
“Yes, that’s Joanna Brantley. How long as she been missing?” asked Duke.
“Since this morning, when we got a call in for a shooting,”
“She might have hurried into the woods and hid there till she is assured it is safe to come out again. She is a soldier of ours on inactive status,” Flint stated. He was hoping that she used her military senses and raced into the woods to escape who shot and killed her father.
“I do not believe that happened as there were marks on the ground of a struggle near her father. I believe she has been kidnapped but who is the question. Who would kidnap a General’s daughter and kill the General? Wouldn’t both be worth something to the military to get back?” asked the detective.
“Yes, so this whole case is very weird. Could my team go to the scene? We might find a clue to whom could have done this?” asked Hawk. “Or I could overstep your boundary and claim military control over the whole scene?”
“Actually, I was hoping your team might have a clue to who did this, since you probably have more experience in this than I.” the detective stated.
“I’ll get my canine handler on the site along with a few of my best trackers just in case she did run into the forest to hide,” Hawk stated, as he made a few calls and got the team alerted to a new mission.
Most the team on the base wanted to help search for Joanna but Hawk wanted only a small team as he wasn’t sure that Joanna hadn’t raced into the woods and hid somewhere till it was safe. He ordered Duke to man the mission and to report back when they found her.
It didn’t take Duke and his team to arrive at the scene, the detective told his officers that they will be assisting them in finding the missing woman. Duke went to the body which they refused to move till they arrived. He looked at the remains. He nodded sadly. “That is or was General Brantley.” He noticed the burn mark on his jogging shirt. He bent over it and sniffed. It smelt like burnt flesh and around the edges was burnt like a laser had hit him there. He pulled the shirt away from the corpse and noticed that there was no blood which meant one thing the kidnappers used laser weapons. Duke sat on his heels and thought about what he just found. He turned to look at the canine handler Mutt and his canine Junkyard, who was sniffing around where the scuff marks were at and sniffing around as if he was searching for more clue but he kept on returning to that one spot and sitting down at it.
“Duke, Junkyard isn’t finding a trail to run on. I am afraid that Joanna has been kidnapped,” Mutt whispered, looking at his team captain.
“From this spot?” whispered Duke. Mutt nodded solemnly. “Then, I better call Hawk and let him know this is now a kidnapping case as well as a homicide.”
Mutt watched as Duke radioed Hawk and told him what he had stated. Mutt looked around looking for anything that could say who kidnapped her but then the incident that happened several weeks before came back to him. “Zarana.”
Duke had just closed the connection when he heard Mutt’s whisper. “You think Cobra has something to do with this?”
Mutt scratched behind the ears of his dog Junk and nodded. “It would fit with what happened with Zarana’s appearance at the base a few weeks ago.”
“Are you saying they are killing off our Generals and kidnapping their daughters?”
“It is possible. Have the other Generals who have daughters been killed and their daughters kidnapped or was this just the first of many?” asked Mutt.
Duke picked up his radio and radioed into base asking Mainframe to call all the bases and finding out if their Generals were shot at within the past 12 hours. Duke looked back at Mutt. “I hope you are wrong about this, Mutt.”
“So am I,” Mutt replied, as he ordered Junkyard to get in the helicopter as they were returning to base. “I just hope Joanna is not being harmed by her kidnappers.”
Stay tuned, the next one is coming.
I think I will be having Serpentor posing not as himself but as a normal man till she is hopelessly in love with him before he is revealed to be Serpentor.
