Chapter 6- Repair
Suzy stalked the halls, like a lion on the prowl with a glare to match. People stared at her as she passed. She and a large bruise on the left side of her jaw its deep purple colour failed to be hidden by her dark skin.
She could see him ahead in the lunch line. Matthew needed to be told. He needed to know that Kimi and was using him. How dare Kimi attack her for doing the right thing.
Suzy grabbed Matthew's arm.
"I need to speak with you." She demanded to the boy who was a practical stranger to her. For a second Matthew looked like he was going to tell Suzy to shove off, a complete stranger wasn't going to demand anything from him. But then he noticed the bruise and the glare. This was not a girl to say no to.
Suzy dragged him out of the cafeteria, outside and across the grounds and into another building. She stayed silent and Matthew didn't think he would get an answer if he asked a question. Suzy came to a stop outside an empty classroom and forced him inside.
"Your going out with Kimi Finster aren't you." It was a statement, not a question, which left Matthew silent, he just nodded his head. Suzy sighed and pointed to a chair. Matthew sat down and Suzy took a chair opposite him.
"There's something you should know...about her. She's not the person you think she is." This clearly wasn't easy for her, but Matthew was no longer afraid now the angry glare had gone from her eyes. She had dragged him out of the lunch line just to tell him something about Kimi, and he already thought he knew what it was.
"What is she like?" He asked, deciding for now to play along.
"Whatever she's says she feels about you, it's a lie. Kimi isn't in love with you, she can't be. Kimi is gay." Whatever reaction Suzy expected, it wasn't what happened next. Matthew sighed and looked at his wristwatch.
"You must be Suzy. Kimi said you like getting straight to the point. Anyone else she knows would have been dancing around this subject for at least another ten minutes."
"YOU KNOW?" she shouted, jumping from her chair in shock. Matthew nodded, and remained calm.
"Of course I know. Sit."
Suzy was so shocked by what she was hearing that she complied without complaint. Matthew sighed. Kimi said she was going to talk to her friends, but he couldn't walk away without giving an explanation.
"What you see between me and Kimi, is the result of a carefully planned act. an act we perform because it has mutual benefits. Because we're together, her secret is safe…and so is mine."
It only three seconds for Suzy to figure out what he meant. Three seconds exactly, you could set your watch by her. Suzy fell into an embarrassed silence.
"You're gay." She said quietly. Matthew nodded.
"I wasn't ready for people to find out. Kimi made up this plan to stop the stories of my sexuality spreading."
Suzy didn't say a word. She now understood everything. No wonder Kimi had got so upset. Suzy had burst into her room and hadn't even waited to hear Kimi's side of the story, she had just assumed to worst. If Kimi ever spoke to her again it would be a miracle.
Matthew seemed to understand that the subject was over. He climbed to his feet and left the room. As soon as he stepped into the corridor and closed the door, he heard Suzy start crying.
******************************
Kimi was skipping lunch to do this. She had to get her friends back on her side as soon as possible so they would stay silent about her sexuality so that her fake relationship with Matthew wasn't wrecked. Phil and lill were still on her side, silence from them was guaranteed. Chuckie was fine, his performance this morning showed that.
All that remained was the three people she had no relationship with anymore. Tommy, Dill and Suzy. Since Suzy would still be angry due to their fight last night, she would try and win Tommy and Dill around first.
Dill was a little way ahead, eating his lunch. Kimi had a cunning plan and she needed Dill to do it.
Dill abandoned his meal as Kimi sat at the table. He began to move off, but she had expected this.
"I want to talk to Tommy." She called out to him. Dill stopped walking, and turned to face her.
"What makes you think Tommy wants to talk to you?" He said with venom in his voice. Kimi nodded and sighed.
"I know, but I need to talk, to explain."
Dill leaned over the table and stared at her intensely.
"He doesn't want to have anything to do with you ever again. As far as he's concerned, you can go play on the highway. He's still hurting from what you did. If you want to speak with him, I think your nuts." He cracked a wide smile. "Sounds like my kind of thing, what have you got in mind?"
***********************
Tommy was on his way to class when Dill grabbed him and pulled him aside.
"I need to have a word with you." He whispered intensely.
"What is it?" Tommy whispered back. Dill looked around the corridor and handed a scrap of paper to Tommy.
"Not here. Come here." He whispered back. Tommy looked at the paper, it said JANNITORS CLOSET.
"I'll be waiting." Dill whispered.
"Why are we whispering?" Asked Tommy. Dill smiled widely.
"I just wanted to see if you would whisper." He chuckled and walked down the corridor.
Tommy approached the closet with more than a little anxiety. He loved his brother, but Dill's eccentricity was frightening sometimes. The door was slightly ajar and in the corner was a figure, sitting on a box of toilet paper, had they had their back too Tommy. Dill was wearing a coat with the hood up. Tommy stepped inside and closed the door.
"What is it Dill. I'm going to be late." There was an ominous click behind him. Someone had locked the door.
"HEY" Tommy pounded on the door and yanked at the handle, but no one unlocked the door to let him out.
He turned, the person on the box had stood up, it wasn't Dill, too tall. Kimi pulled the coat away and dropped it to the floor.
"YOU!!! YOU PLANNED THIS DIDN'T YOU?" He pushed Kimi and she ran into the wall. "LET ME OUT." He bellowed at her. Kimi shook her head. Tommy pushed her again. Kimi landed on the wall again, but still shook her head. "LET ME OUT." Tommy yelled.
"Not until we talk" Kimi said quietly. She rubbed her shoulder, which was sore after being pushed into the wall so hard. Tommy wasn't listening to her. He turned and kicked at the door as hard as he could.
"Tommy, we need to talk about this." She begged him. Tommy wasn't listening, he kicked the door again and again, his frustration growing with every hit.
"THERE IS NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT." He shouted at the top of his lungs. He kicked the door and the lock gave way, the door popped open and swung wide. Dill was in the corridor staring in surprise. Tommy stared at Dill in silence and stalked off down the corridor.
"I think it's safe to say, that was a failure." Muttered Dill. Kimi glared at him briefly before nodding her head.
***************************
After school Kimi didn't go home. She didn't feel like facing her family, she wanted to be alone.
She walked off to the park where their parents had taken them when they were young children. She sat on a bench and watched a small group of kids on the playground. Around the age she had been when their entire group had come together. Her mother told her they had met in Paris, where Chuckie said his first word and lots of other crazy things that none of them had any memory of, they had been too young.
Things had been so simple for them back then, they had been young and innocent. Nothing was as complicated as it was now. They were friends and couldn't think of anything that could break them apart.
"How times have changed." She muttered to herself.
A shadow fell at her side, but Kimi ignored it.
"This seat taken?" A sweetly familiar voice, Kimi thought for a moment that she was dreaming. She tilted her head upward and stared at Suzy.
"No." She said dumbly. Suzy sat by her side and looked at Kimi strangely. Kimi bit her lip when she got a god look at the bruise on the side of her face.
"Sorry." She said, her voice cracked, like she was going to cry.
They fell into silence. Suzy was waiting for Kimi to speak. Kimi had to say what Suzy wanted her to say and she had to say it now, or their friendship would be unfixable.
"I...I have a confession to make. It's about me and Matthew...You see we're..."
Suzy smiled, Kimi was trying to say it. The gesture was enough.
"I know." she said, a smile spreading on her face. Kimi stopped talking and stared at Suzy. Suzy was shocked when she saw tears swell up in her eyes.
"You know...I...Suzy I'm so sorry, I just...I didn't want to...It was so complicated and I didn't know what to do...and now you hate me and I..." Suzy silenced Kimi by pulling the girl close into a tight hug.
"I don't hate you. You my best friend Kimi...I'm sorry I got so angry. I'm sorry I didn't trust you. I didn't want to see you get hurt."
They slowly pulled apart, Kimi wiped away the tears from her eyes and managed a smile.
"So... does this mean we're ok?" Asked Kimi nervously. Suzy smiled and hugged her again.
"Yeah, we're fine."
******************************
Tommy sat in his room, brooding over the day's events. There was a light knock at the door.
"Go away." He yelled. Dill stepped into the room. Tommy jumped to his feet and pointed to the door.
"I said get out." He yelled. Dill didn't move. He stared at Tommy with an intense focus he had never seen in his brother before.
"Kimi wanted to talk with you today. She wanted to explain." He said. Tommy laughed bitterly and turned his back to his brother.
"Explain what? That she just needed to use me to see if she was gay? She just used me and tossed me aside the minute she found out what she needed to know."
"For God's sake Tommy, get over yourself." Shouted Dill. Tommy turned to face him again, he'd never heard his brother sound like that. "Kimi was confused, alone and very much afraid. She needed to turn to someone she could trust and above all others she chose you.
"In the heat of the moment she made a terrible mistake. She knows it, you know it, everyone knows it. But she is trying to make up for it. She would do anything you asked if it means you would accept her apology. If stay this pig-headed, knocking her back when she is trying her hardest to make up for what she's done, then she'll be the victim and you'll be the one in the wrong."
Dill turned and walked to the door, just before exiting he looked back at Tommy.
"If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings- nor lose the common touch.
If neither foes nor *loving friends* can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much.
If you can fill the unforgiving minute,
With sixty seconds worth of distance run.
Yours is the earth and everything that's in it.
And-which is more-you'll be a man, my son.
