Chapter 6: Curiosity
***
Optimus was perplexed. This was, of late, not unusual, especially when Prowl was involved. The ninjabot had changed his behavior since the warp rift incident, lurking in the base's roof beams and outright stalking Optimus at times. It was the same way he would stalk criminals across Detroit, and Optimus felt disconcerted to be on the receiving end. It would also make him difficult to find, except that Optimus had known him long enough to really know him. He stepped through the door to the side warehouse, turned around and addressed the ledge above the door frame. "Prowl, we have a job."
The ninja shimmered into view, perched on the ledge like some predatory bird. He vaulted to the floor as nonchalantly as if he'd been meditating there. "Yes?"
"Nanosec sighting. Bumblebee's in pursuit; I need you to back him up. I'm going after SloMo, she's made a hit downtown."
"Understood." Prowl dropped into vehicle mode and sped away; Optimus followed with a slight smirk. Prowl's stealth measures had gotten progressively more elaborate in the last few day cycles, and he was no doubt trying to figure out how Optimus kept detecting him. The fact was, Optimus couldn't detect him at all – he just knew, the same way he knew how Sentinel would react when he said anything. The same knowledge that let him guess that Nanosec and SloMo were working together, and the latter was most likely a diversion.
He caught up to SloMo's stolen car on the freeway leading north out of the city. Her loot was in the back seat, and sure enough, it was barely enough to be worth her time unless it was a diversion. Nevertheless, she slammed her foot on the gas, and Optimus lit his sirens to give chase. They were tearing down the interstate, dodging mercifully sparse traffic, when a beat-up muscle car appeared in their path. Optimus had a moment to recognize it before it sprouted an arm and plucked SloMo from her vehicle.
"Dunno if you're brave or stupid, chickie , running from an Autobot at your size."
Optimus transformed. "Lockdown, what are you doing here?"
"Hold your horsepower, Prime. I'm not here to start anything." The bounty hunter transformed as well, still holding the thrashing villainess. By this time the police had caught up to them; he looked at her, then set her on the ground for the humans to collect. "I got a delivery for you." He took a small crate from one of his compartments. "An Autobot sent it."
Optimus took the crate and held it in both servos. It was about the size of his head, but very heavy – about the weight of an entire bot. "What is it?"
"As dense as it is, I wasn't going to open it and find out. Don't want to irradiate my chips." Lockdown was already turning to leave. "Tell the bike I said hi." He dropped into vehicle mode and peeled away; Optimus stared after him, tilting the crate from side to side.
"The bad guys delivering your mail now?" Captain Fanzone called up at him.
"Maybe. If it's all the same to you, I'd rather get this to a secure area before I open it."
"Just … try not to blow anything up this time."
***
Optimus was the first to get back to base, but he decided to wait for Prowl and Bumblebee to return before trying to open the crate. Ratchet's scans couldn't make anything of it, and Optimus was not about to trust something that came from Lockdown's servos. Once the whole team was assembled, he set the crate on the warehouse floor well away from anything breakable and used a remote servo to open it.
No explosion ensued. Cautiously Optimus approached the crate and looked inside; all he saw was a crumpled block of metal. Before he could examine it more closely, there was a flare of blue light – AllSpark light – behind him. He turned; Sari's hand (or was it her servo now) was glowing, and apparently dragging her towards the open crate.
"Not again!" she griped as her hand snapped onto the metal block like a magnet.
Optimus called out, "Stand back, everyone!" With a brighter flare of light, Sari was flung backwards and the crumpled block began to unfold. It still glowed blue – no, it was painted blue, he realized a click before it resolved into a familiar form. "Blurr ?!"
"What in the Pit happened to him?" Bumblebee exclaimed. There was a last surge of key light as Blurr's Spark reignited.
"Shockwave happened," Prowl said.
"Exactlypreciselyindubitably !" The Elite Guard agent sprang to his pedes , none the worse for wear. "AfterIgotoallthattroubletoreportbacktoCybertron , Ineverexpectedthedoubleagenttobemyowncommandingofficer ! InfactI'msurprisedtobeonlinesincethelastIrecall , hewascrushingmeinatrashcompactor ."
Well, that explained a few things. Meanwhile, Sari had picked herself up and was leaning over the edge of the empty crate. She came up with a folded sheet of paper. "Mr Blurr , there's a letter for you." Blurr unfolded the paper and scanned it.
"A printout? Why couldn't they send a message chip?" Bulkhead wondered.
"I'llhaveyouknow , Tubby, thisisnotaprintoutit'shandwritten . Perfectlysecureperfectlysecretnorecordofitseverexisting. AndaccordingtothisI'mtostayonEarthwithyourcrew ."
"Let me see that." Optimus took the note. Agent Blurr , if you are reading this you have survived your encounter with the Decepticon agent. You will remain on Earth and place yourself under the command of Optimus Prime. Do not inform anyone else of your survival. The string of numbers written along the edge of the page verified the message as genuine; only Ultra Magnus could have sent it. What was he up to?
Amid the confusion of getting Blurr up to speed, as it were, Optimus almost forgot about Prowl's new hobby. Almost. When he noticed that Prowl wasn't with the group, his processor reached for the knowledge … and his subroutines whispered back to him. He came to a halt just outside the medbay .
"Come out where I can see you, Prowl."
The ninjabot dropped from a girder and landed in front of him. "How do you always find me?"
"That's not important right now, Prowl. Whatever it is you think you're doing, it stops now. I have enough to worry about without you pouncing on me from dark corners. Is that understood?"
"Perfectly, Prime." Prowl looked a bit startled; he had probably thought about ambushing him, then. However, Optimus trusted him to obey the order. He usually didn't give orders on personal matters, but this time he felt justified. That letter implied that Ultra Magnus knew far more than he was letting on. Optimus knew Ultra Magnus about as well as he knew Prowl; he was generally adept at calculating from a given stimulus to a response, but now in both cases he was trying to work backwards. He had a hole in his data and he didn't like it.
Optimus stepped into the storage locker where they'd placed the captured warp generator. It was still cycling, at minimal power, theoretically still connected to the same destination. If he wanted to satisfy his curiosity on what Prowl had seen, it was going to have to be soon.

All three versions of Optimus that I'm familiar with (G1, BW and TFA) have this almost preternatural ability to predict what people will do in a given situation. What if it's an actual design feature …?
And yes, I was cheesed off at what happened to Blurr .
Next chapter: Optimus goes down the rabbit hole.
