Pai Mei scowled in the dim twilight as he descended the raised steps of the helipad, his narrowed eyes and irritated frown making his usually cold features even crueler in aspect. He so despised having to utilize such modern contraptions, with their artificial stink and excessive, clamorous noise—as well as the necessity of dealing with the insolent, petty peons that knew how to operate the hell-spawned machinery. Nevertheless, it had been necessary, for even if he were willing to ride a dozen fine stallions to their deaths, it would have taken him many weeks to reach the temple he had just arrived at in mere days, and that delay—and hard journey—was one he wished to endure even less than dealing with the aggravation of the alternative.
Crossing the narrow bridge that connected the thick spire of rock the landing platform occupied to the long, broad stone shelf supporting the squat temple clinging to the mountainside, Pai Mei ignored the precipitous plunge to either side while the frigid Himalayan winds howled around him, pulling and tugging at his hair and layered robes with seemingly malicious intent. Arriving at the sturdy side door that stood mere feet from the end of the span, Pai Mei gave a faint sneer and proceeded down the narrow, icy track that wound its way along the base of the wall instead, until he reached the main doors of the ancient edifice.
Hammering on the thick wood with nearly the force of a battering ram, Pai Mei stood in the growing darkness for only a matter of moments before warm lantern-light spilled out into the night around him as the massive portals split apart, dozens of rushing servants dragging the heavy doors open in response to the echoing booms. Pai Mei stood as if a statue until the scrambling serfs pulled the weighty doors fully open, then strode into the cramped courtyard without so much as a glance at the puffing laborers.
Striding across the cobblestones, Pai Mei was equally unmindful of the robed priest that ran up to him, bowing and scraping as he hastily babbled; “It is such an honor to have you once more grace these walls with your presence great Master! I had never dared dream that I would gaze upon the countenance of the last of the Ancient Masters within my lifetime! Please, please, accept our humble thanks for your presence! I—”
“Enough of your braying, lackwit!” Pai Mei barked without breaking stride. “Where is Uzochi?”
“Grand Master Uzochi is in the central dojo great Master Pai Mei; we informed him of your arrival as soon as your helicopter set down. Please allow me the honor of escorting y—”
“I know the way you fool! And our words will not be for the likes of a flea-brained, groveling idiot like you! Now begone!” Pai Mei dismissed the monk in no uncertain terms as he entered the temple proper.
“Yes, yes, of course! A thousand pardons great Master! I meant no offense with my foolish meanderings and presumptions! Please, I humbly beg your forgiveness! It shall be as you wish!” the Monk groveled, bobbing up and down in deep bows while backing away from Pai Mei, all the way out the door and back into the courtyard.
The obsequious gesture was lost on Pai Mei, as the Ancient Master spared not even the briefest of glances behind him, his attention fixed firmly on the long hallway stretching out before him, the irritant of the monk’s presence all but forgotten as he focused on the coming confrontation.
Pai Mei’s unwavering stride carried him swiftly through the large, vaulted halls that cut their way deep into the heart of the mountain, until a mere handful of minutes later he arrived at the cavernous central dojo that was the focal point of the ancient temple. With nary a pause, the Ancient Master entered the huge octagonal space and headed for the whispering, sibilant sounds of bare feet on woven tatami mat. By the time he passed the last of the elaborately carved wooden walls separating the various areas of the dojo, the sounds had stopped. Coming to a halt, Pai Mei stood for a moment, silently observing the man he had come to see.
Grand Master Uzochi was a sharp contrast to Pai Mei, as if darkness to his light. Nearly six-and-a-half-feet tall, he had the lean, lanky build of his African tribal heritage, with ebony skin as black as night, marked out with elaborate patterns of arcing lines, swirls, and dots branded into his flesh. Beneath those patterns, every cord and sinew of his slender but still powerful-looking muscularity stood out clearly, rippling and flowing with his movements. His long, thin face was just shy of gaunt, but somehow still conveyed a sense of warmth despite its angular lines, and the oval dome of his bald pate shone in the soft light of the dojo. It was his eyes that drew the immediate attention of anyone who saw him however, for they were twin milky white orbs that stood out in stark, shocking contrast to his inky skin.
“Ah, Master Pai Mei, it’s so good to see you after all these many years.” Grand Master Uzochi’s voice was rich and deep; with a hollow, powerful resonance to it that gave the Cantonese he was speaking an eerie, almost alien quality.
“Spare me your pleasantries,” Pai Mei sneered, “I did not travel hundreds of leagues merely for the pleasure of your company.”
Grand Master Uzochi sighed softly and reached for a light, sleeveless, unadorned yellow-orange robe, slipping it on before picking up his thick, gnarled, elaborately carved ebonwood staff.
“Very well, if that is your wish. Please be so kind as to enlighten me on the reason you did travel here then.”
“I made this journey so that I might have the pleasure of seeing your face as I deliver the news that your decision to train that walking, breathing atrocity was a mistake, as I have always said.” Pai Mei smiled cruelly, taking sadistic delight in his news. “It has violated the edicts upheld by the last convocation of Masters, and now you…” Pai Mei paused, drawing out the moment to savor it, “or another, have no choice but to impose the proper sanctions upon it!”
“I see.” Uzochi responded calmly in the face of Pai Mei’s maliciously pleased announcement. “And might I inquire as to which of the edicts she has violated, or would you be expecting me to proceed…” the corner of Uzochi’s mouth quirked with just the hint of a smirk, “blindly, with only your allusions standing against her?”
“It has been revealing the ancient secrets of The Way to another.” Pai Mei returned smugly. “An upstart, flame-haired American brat. I let the girl live so that you might seek her out to see for yourself, as I was sure you would not simply take my word as proof, as you rightfully should…” Again Pai Mei paused, knowing full well the pain he was causing Uzochi, before twisting the knife further, “and because I wouldn’t wish to… deprive you of the honor of dealing with the girl yourself as well.”
Uzochi gazed at Pai Mei with his eerie, unseeing eyes for a long, silent moment before, much to the Ancient Master’s shock, bursting into rich, hearty laughter. The echoing mirth continued long enough for Pai Mei’s surprise to begin shifting to outrage before Uzochi spoke again.
“Ah my friend, you actually had me worried for the briefest of moments there, but alas, even though I know how much joy this brings your cold heart, I have no choice but to disappoint you, for you see, although she has yet to pass the Fifth Gate, Corscan has my dispensation to take on students, as per Master Zan Quao’s edict of extended patronage.” Uzochi grinned broadly, his brilliant white teeth a gleaming contrast to his ebony skin.
For the second time in less than a minute, Pai Mei was flabbergasted—this time from raw disbelief. He stood silent before the grinning Uzochi for many long moments, eyes wide and all but gaping in slack-jawed amazement, before finally giving his head a sharp shake and harshly questioning; “What? Do you mean to tell me that that thing has managed to pass the Fourth Gate?”
Uzochi continued to smile, this time at Pai Mei’s outrage, and answered; “Indeed. She was quite driven and focused in her quest for advancement this last decade, and though it was a considerable challenge for her, she did manage to persevere and overcome the Fourth Gate.”
“Bah! Spare me your sentimental pride and empty platitudes!” Pai Mei scowled, practically sneering.
“Do not blame me for your lack of knowledge in this matter my friend,” Uzochi chided, a gentle humor in his voice despite Pai Mei’s irascible demeanor. “It was not I that decided to withdraw from the world and hold only to my own counsel.”
Pai Mei glared at Uzochi, his eyes narrowing nearly to slits, but said nothing. After a long time standing in silence, Pai Mei seemed to calm, recovering his usual cold, collected bearing.
“Very well, it seems I was in error. Let it not be said that the White Lotus is incapable of admitting his mistakes.” Pai Mei paused, then continued as if addressing no one in particular. “And speaking of mistakes, now that the abomination has passed the Fourth Gate, perhaps it is time for me to correct the mistake that was the council of Masters allowing that pack of petty, conniving snakes and cowardly, creeping spiders to convince them to allow its training in the first place! Unless of course, you would choose to oppose my challenge…”
There was a distinct tenor of confrontation and no little threat in Pai Mei’s voice, and this time when Uzochi spoke, his resonant tones held no trace of humor.
“You made your position abundantly clear when this was decided so many years ago Pai Mei, and as you well know, the better part of the other Masters did not share your concerns.”
“Bah! We should have crushed those vile schemers for having the audacity to put their foul creation before us as a prospective student, not capitulated to their wishes!”
“As you said then. But as you also know, Masters that were ancient well before you were even born discovered the truth that one man cannot fight the world alone, nor can even many—especially now, in this age of modern wonders and terrors.” Uzochi shook his head and sighed briefly. “But that is neither here nor there; what is past cannot be undone by either you or me, so I see no need to revisit this issue with you yet again. As for your other concern, I could hardly claim the right of protection for my student after having stood for her worth under the edict of extended patronage, now could I?” Uzochi left the “as you well know” unspoken this time.
“Perhaps not by any sense of common wisdom, but by the letter of the edicts, you know as well as I that you could still claim your Master’s right with it; it has not passed the Fifth Gate yet.” Pai Mei gave a smug smile; he knew Uzochi’s sense of honor and integrity made it all but unthinkable for him to do such a thing, but reminding him that he could—and thus intimating that he might—was a grave insult so subtle that that very same integrity would prevent Uzochi from seeking redress for it.
Uzochi frowned, his narrow face losing its air of warmth, and curtly responded; “Be that as it may, I will not.” Uzochi gave a grim smile. “If you should wish to challenge Corscan I shall not stand in the way of your folly.”
“You dare suggest that vile thing could stand against me?” Pai Mei’s eyes narrowed at the insult.
“She cannot defeat you, it is true, but equally, you cannot defeat her now that she has passed the Fourth Gate. Her skills are too great for you to be able to overcome her other gifts save by chance, treachery, or a superior strategy which I by no means intend insult when I say is beyond your ability to employ—your methods are far too direct and have been for many, many centuries now. It is simply truth.”
Pai Mei scowled and all but spat; “Paugh! Further evidence that foul, unnatural abomination should never have been allowed to soil the traditions of The Way!”
“Nonetheless, that is how things stand, however much you prefer to dispute it.”
“Bah!” Pai Mei spun on his heel and stalked out of the section he was in, heading back the way he came without another word. As he went, Uzochi’s voice followed him, echoing through the room as the Grand Master loudly exclaimed; “So sorry you came all this way for nothing Master Pai Mei. One can only hope that your next visit will be more pleasant for you.”
Pai Mei snarled and kept walking. Behind him, Uzochi gave a soft chuckle that only one of his exceptional hearing could have detected, a grin on his lips as the sound of the White Lotus’ ire reached him.

Note: I just want to quickly mention that I did not spend the last three weeks writing just four pages, I spent three days writing them. I’ve also got 18 pages done on the chapter that was supposed to be this one, before I realized this one fit better coming before it than after… :p
