Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Eve groans as she settles down in the seat across from him. “If that woman wasn’t so good at her job, I’d go somewhere else.”
Owen tries not to smile at her frustration as he waves the waitress over. “Do I wish to know what she wanted?” “Not really.” She rubs at her face and orders a tea. “It’s like we’re back in high school all over again and she thinks she can find a way between us. I finally made it a point of only answering questions that had to do with the dress before she backed off.” His lips curve up, betraying his amusement. “At least she is not running around with extra parts and the store is still in one piece.” Eve deflates more, inching down into her seat. “There is that.” He reaches out, cupping his hand over hers. “Be at ease, Eve. It is a victory, not a defeat.” His thumb strokes her fingers. “We can take our business elsewhere if that is what you would like.” “No.” She sips her tea, letting the warmth calm her further. “She has most of what she needs. The rest can wait til after the dress is made. I’m just frustrated and ready for some quiet.” “Do you require anything else before we head back home?” He catches a slight smile flit across her face. “What is so amusing?’ “Everytime you say home is seems funny because I can’t see you fitting in on a farm for long.” She squeezes his hand back. “For you, I could.” He raises her hand to his lips, gently kissing her fingers. Her smile returns. “I know you would, but I’d never ask it of you unless you really wanted it on your own. Besides, Becky has kind of made me ready to go back to New York where I know there are lots of people who actually care for me more than just stabbing me in the back.” “We can leave early.” He searches her face to see if she’s serious. “I planned on us being gone for three weeks but it seems my sister has taken a few steps to resolve the situation. “ She chuckles softly. “Why am I not surprised? She doesn’t seem to be someone who keeps her nose out of things.” “Not usually, no.” He opens her hand and kisses her palm. “What is your wish, My Queen?” “First you call me a Lady and now you keep calling me a Queen.” She winks and grins. “One of these days you’ll realize I’m neither and change your mind.” “Never.” He smiles back. She sighs, gazing out the window. “Do we have to go straight back?” “We can go wherever you wish so long as I give David a clue as to where we are just in case something happens.” He refills her tea from a nearby pot. “Sounds fair enough.” Eve nods to herself as she sips from her cup. “I do want to spend one last day checking on the mares that will allow me to see them.” “That can be arranged.” He waves for his check and empties his cup in a gulp. “Let us get some supplies and we can start this evening.” “Supplies?” She eyes him warily and lets him pull her to her feet. He hands the waitress her tip and smirks at Eve. “I do not plan on sleeping under the stars again unprepared this time.” “I guess some sleeping bags and food would be nice.” She smiles back as he leads her out of the diner. When they get back to the farm, he lets her pack the saddlebags on her own while he tends to the horses. Thunder and Warrior eye him as he fills a small pack with treats, brushes and hoof picks. Owen looks up to see them staring at him and a smile lifts his lips. “Do you think I would forget about you two?” He closes the pack and sets it next to the saddles. “She would never let me hear the end of it if I did.”
Both horses snort and stomp their feet, showing their amusement and impatience to be on their way. Owen silently grooms them, saddling them as he waits for Eve. He finally sees Thunder’s ears twitch, head lifting as he listens to a distant sound. After a few more moments he can hear the sound of feet across the gravel drive. With a final pat, he steps out of the stall to get their bridles. Eve opens the door, stopping in her tracks as she sees both horses nearly ready to go. “I didn’t think you were that eager to leave.” He lifts the bridles from their hooks and walks back to the stalls. “I prefer not getting caught on the trails when it gets dark. Setting up camp in the dark and trying to get a fire going when you can’t see your hands is too much of a pain in the ass.” She grins, stepping inside Warrior’s stall and attaching the first saddle bag. “There’s always magic to do it for you.” He stares at her over Thunder’s head. “Don’t get caught up using magic for things that you can do with your own two hands. It’ll make you lazy.” “Yes, Dear.” She rolls her eyes, laughing at him. He steps into the stall with her, taking the saddle bag from her. “Just remember to keep saying that.” “Whatever!” She smacks his arm and shoves him away. “Go put that on Thunder before I leave you here.” He laughs, shaking his head as he goes back to Thunder’s stall. They ride all day, stopping only now and then when old magic symbols catch her attention. Each time she gently reaches out, lightly stroking her hand across the symbol. When the first one flared to life as her hand crossed it, Owen nearly came unglued. He could see Eve was unaware she was instinctively using magic to recharge the symbols. Only Warrior’s baleful look kept him from reaching out and stopping her every time. By the time they reached the clearing they planned on camping at, Owen had relaxed enough to let her continue.
Seeing her nearly exhausted from the ride and the use of magic, he quietly settled her against a tree with a drink and went about making camp. Every time Eve tried to protest, Owen would glare at her. Knowing a lost cause when she saw one, she waited until the fire was well underway and then began making supper without asking his permission. Owen watched her while she fitfully dozed against the tree but was glad when she woke up and started making supper. He knew the silence between them could not last much longer. His mistakes were beginning to pile up and he knew he needed to fix them immediately. When the stew was done, he took the bowl from her and curled up next to her to eat. “What have I done now?” Eve asks, glancing around the clearing as the sky begins to darken around them. “What do you mean?” He scrapes at his bowl, spooning the last bite from it. “You’ve been watching me all day.” She sighs softly, settling her half empty bowl in front of her. “I know something’s wrong.” “Contrary to popular belief, I don’t stare at you only when you are doing something wrong.” He sets his bowl down too and pulls her into his arms. “I watch you far more than that. I would even watch you sleep if I didn’t need it myself.” She smirks, leaning into his arms. “Voyeur.” “You say that as if it is a bad thing.” He kisses her brow. “Come. I think after the long ride we’ve had now would be a good time to head to bed while we can still see the sleeping bags.” She chuckles but allows him to pull her to her feet and lead the way to the small tent. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
