Chapter 56
Hakoda took out his fishing knife and cut his palm letting the blood flow freely into the water. He began to sing when the sharks that had been drawn by the blood began circling. Sharks and killer whales were partial taboo among their people due to their cannibalistic nature. Their meat had to undergo an extra blessing before it could be consumed otherwise their spirits’ thirst for the blood of their own kind would be awakened in those who ate it.
Hakoda took out his harpoon and speared the largest one he could bring in himself. When he pulled it out of the water parts of it were already missing. He cleaned it while saying the necessary prayers to thank the animal for its life. He requested to be nourished by its spirit and the spirits that lurked in the water it was caught in specifically naming his wife as one of them.
“I am leaving my humanity with you Kya. Please keep it safe until I return with our children.” He sliced a piece of the heart and the lip then ate them before cutting his hands on the sharks tooth and allowing it to bleed in the water.
He used a pail to scoop some of the water out of the ocean and poured the salty water over his hand until it stopped bleeding. Once the scent of blood was no longer present the sharks disappeared. His plea to their bloodthirsty patron had been accepted.
Hakoda partially skinned the shark then draped it over his shoulders before returning home. He stepped of the boat covered in blood and moored it to the dock. When he was finished several people had gathered around him. Each one repeated the same question, “Chief Hakoda, are you injured?”
“Chief is a name of rank and title among humans. I am a skinwalker who has borrowed the form of Chief Hakoda. There is reason to believe that Sokka and Katara have been captured by the Fire Nation. The human will not return until they are safely in my arms again,” he declared lifting the shark. “My last act as your chief was to provide nourishment for my people. Please accept this offering as a gesture of my goodwill and sincere promise that this evil spirit will not harm you. I will remember the Southern Water Tribe and its interest as the wendigo takes over. I am willing to accept all punishment for my deeds so long as my children are allowed to rejoin our people.”
“Hakoda,” Gran-Gran whispered, clutching Pakku’s arm.
The elderly sages stepped forward to bless the shark but Bato stepped them, “Hakoda was my brother long before he became chief. His children are my children. I will not let him go alone on this dark journey.”
His wife kissed him and nodded, “I will sing your souls back to this realm. If you fail I will join the rank of demons alongside you.”
One by one the men of the Southern Water Tribe who were healthy and uninjured declared themselves demons by eating the unblessed meat. Sokka and Katara were family. They were willing to go to whatever length was necessary to save them.
Pakku kissed Kanna on the forehead before joining them, “Your soul has called to mine for over sixty years. I will not get lost. I will make sure your son and his children make it back safely.”
“Old Man, I guess I was wrong in saying that I would never marry you,” Kanna said wiping tears away as she hugged him.
Sangok watched the proceedings curiously before speaking. This was unlike anything he’d seen in the Northern Water Tribe, “What does it mean to be a demon?”
“It means that I am going after the Fire Nation like a shark goes after anything bleeding in the water. There will not be a single trace that life ever existed once I am finished,” Hakoda replied, his voice cold and steely.
“I will join you,” Sangok declared stepping forward and eating a bit of the raw shark. He had lost his manhood because of Katara and had been sent to the healing huts by his father for losing sparring matches to her. If he did this and was one of the men to rescue her then his strength as a man would no longer be called into question.
Chief Hakoda clapped him on the shoulder, “The path will not be easy, Son, and I thank you for embarking on this journey. Our lives will mostly be in your hands as the only healer among us.”
“I will go,” this time a female in her late twenties stepped forward. She was one of the Waterbenders who had followed Pakku to the South Pole. Hakoda hugged her and thanked her for her bravery.
“Iluak, you are a woman!” Torluq shouted. “You have no business on the battlefield!”
She ate the raw shark, “My children are already lost to me. My husband died and his family cast me out. My soul already walks among the dead. Perhaps if I am able to assist Chief Hakoda in recovering his children I will regain a bit of my own lost spirit.”
Pakku eyed her sternly, “Torluq is right. Battle is no place for an untrained woman. Your lessons begin at moonrise. That goes for all of you women who wish to learn to fight. In return I ask that I be allowed to learn healing.”
“Master Pakku! Have your forgotten our people’s traditions?” Torluq screamed in protest.
“No, I have not, but we are not in the Northern Water Tribe. Our sister tribe has suffered greatly over the years. The loss of their benders has left them at the mercy of the Fire Nation. Katara was the last in her tribe and she too has been captured by the Fire Nation. It would be far more disgraceful to leave them defenseless and deprive them of their last true Waterbender for something as intangible as our pride and tradition when it was our inaction that led them to their current straits,” He lectured sharply.
Two more of the Northern Waterbenders stepped forward. The rest agreed with Torluq and decided to return the North Pole after helping to rebuild the walls. They wanted to fight the Fire Nation on their own terms. They knew they could rally the other warriors and Chief Arnook would support them.
One of the boys who had traveled with Huu stepped forward but a hand on his shoulder stopped him. “Without adequate roots every tree falls. We have come here to learn healing. It would be better if we stayed behind to offer whatever support we can during their absence. However, I do expect we will learn something interesting at the moonrise lessons.”
