Dreams of an Absolution
Chapter 50
it was mid afternoon a day after the strange monster attack. A small group of friends had gathered at the Townsville Public Library, taking up a table in the furthest, quietest corner in the back of the building. They were a strange sort of group, with little in common beyond a common interest.
On one side of the table was a thin teenager with a gaunt face and black hair that faded into blue at the tips. He constantly played with the skull charm he held in his hands, leaning back in his seat and occasionally peeking up to offer a quip or witty comment. To his left was another teenager, thin like the other, but clearly touting some muscle definition. His hair was straight blue, slicked back into twin tufts. He sat upright, hands folded in his lap, only tearing his eyes away from the oldest member of the group to glare at his more immature companion.
Next to the blue-haired boy was another boy, this one much younger. He tried to focus on the spelling worksheet in front of him, but couldn't help getting distracted by the constant chattering around him. Across from him was a young adult with pale green skin and white hair: a monster. Not just any monster, but one of Townsville's favorite educators! He moved slower these days, not quite himself after being shot more than a month ago.
The last two members of the group seemed to draw all attention to themselves without even trying. The older of the two was a tall monster, with long red hair and fierce, fiery eyes. Though, on the outside, he tried to stay stern, every time the little hand in his tightened it's hold, he shivered and couldn't help giving her a small smile.
She was the one who had gathered them all together. The leader of the Powerpuff Girls, and his beloved, Blossom Utonium.
"No, no, that's not right. Here try again," Blossom chastised, erasing the answer Boomer had written down before. This time, when he wrote the correct word, she flashed him a bright smile. One that brought a fierce blush and a nervous grin to the little boy's face. "Much better! I knew you could do it,"
"A fantastic understanding of the subject matter, Master Boomer," The blue-haired teenager, Cicero, exclaimed. He clapped the young boy on the shoulder and sighed, pressing his fingers against his forehead, "Knowledge is a mighty weapon indeed. My spirit soars seeing you make such an effort to hone it, in lieu of a natural aptitude for the art," The others stared at him, while the demon teen continued to pose dramatically.
His partner, Darien, cleared his throat, "Did you just call the Mistress's friend stupid, Cicero?" he teased, stressing the demon's civilian name.
Cicero's eyes widened and he quickly rose to his feet, standing at attention, "Not at all, Darien! I would never lay such an insult against Master Boomer!"
"That is enough, keep your voices down, both of you," Uka commanded. Darien shot to his feet and both demons bowed, muttering apologies. They quickly returned to their seats and Mr. Green used that opportunity to clear his throat.
"Blossom, you were saying you had questions about the monster attack?" he finally managed to ask. They'd been chit-chatting for nearly an hour and he'd only just now managed to find a space to ask.
The Powerpuff girl nodded, leaning against Uka and twirling his goatee around her finger. She grinned in amusement when he shuddered and struggled to suppress a low growl building in his throat, "That's right...the monster said something interesting before we killed it...he said 'I have awakened. The Age is at last at an end,' I think it was,"
Mr. Green crossed his arms and stroked his chin. Something about that must have seemed familiar.
"The Age," Uka growled, snatching Blossom's hand in his. She bit her tongue and offered him a playful grin. He returned the mischievous glare, kissing her hand before releasing it. He immediately regretted it when she brushed her fingers across his lips while he tried to speak, "Could it have meant this stage of man's rule over this world?"
Uka snatched Blossom's hand again and pulled her into his arms, hoping to keep her wandering fingers under control for even a moment. Every day that passed, she grew more comfortable in her new body, and more adventurous. He finally silenced her protests with a short kiss and a smug grin of satisfaction. The heat in her cheeks and her lips still reaching for his nearly foiled his resolve.
"That's very likely...it was a serpent...it was...the sea…" Mr. Green blinked and leaned forward, lacing his fingers together. Now he seemed sure he knew something about this creature. Clearing his throat again, he tapped the hovering disk in the center of their table. The boys and monster watched as a recording of the fight from before appeared in a hologram projected from the disk.
"Amazing technology," Cicero commented, leaning closer to inspect the device, "the one called Dexter is a master of his craft. I never imagined such a thing could be constructed by mere men,"
"It is impressive," Darien had to admit. His lips curled into a frown, watching the monster die. He'd have given anything to command a soul of such power. "It's a shame we'll have to destroy him," he mumbled.
Cicero nodded, "Truly a shame, but the Mistress is confident that he would never align with our efforts." The teenagers glanced up when they heard their normally quiet little friend scoff. They just managed to catch him roll his eyes with an over-the-top shrug.
"He's not that great! My Pops is a million billion times smarter and I know he'll help us!" Boomer exclaimed, smacking the device a bit too hard, shutting it off and breaking it in half on the table. He crossed his arms and fumed, still glaring at it, "Oops."
"The end of the Age. Not an age, or an era, just…" Mr. Green gasped, hands flying to his horns, "That's it!" he quickly turned to Blossom and Uka. His face heated up; he quickly tore his eyes away.
Blossom had her arms tightly wrapped around Uka's neck, her lips pressed against his. She'd kicked off one of her shoes and had her leg draped over the arm of his chair. One of her tentacles had slipped out from under her dress and was rubbing against his stomach. Uka was caught between his current form, Baku, and his own natural form, groaning while he ran his hand through her hair, the other cupping her cheek possessively. One of his own tendrils had slipped from under his shirt and was racing up her bare leg.
"You two! You're in the library! This is important!" Mr. Green shouted, clamping his hands over his mouth. He peered back over his shoulder, mentally berating himself and praying to anyone listening that no one would come back to check on them.
With an irritated sigh, Uka finally pulled himself away from her. Blossom sighed and nodded, laying her head on his shoulder. Her tentacle slid back under her dress, but she couldn't stop herself playing with his beard. Similarly, while his form was mostly under control, he couldn't bring himself to retract the tendril draped around her leg.
"Ahem, of course, you've deciphered the origin of the creature, Barthandelus?" Uka murmured, his voice scratchier than normal.
Mr. Green crossed his arms and nodded. It took a moment to find his voice, "Yes, um, ahem. Yes, I believe…" he trailed off, taking another deep breath. With a nod, he continued in earnest, "Yes. The monster that attacked you...it was one of Them,"
Blossom paused, glancing toward Mr. Green. She hadn't seen her old teacher look so distressed. He'd even taken the thought of her being a villain better than this, "Who?" she asked in a clear voice.
"The…" Mr. Green licked his lips, staring at the broken hologram disk through his laced fingers, "The first of the Great Old Ones. The first monsters, born from stardust and the power of the gods themselves, tasked to rule over this world…" he shivered and closed his eyes.
"It doesn't make sense though...they were just supposed to be legends. No one has seen nor heard from them in...in billions of years!" he hissed.
Blossom ran Uka's beard between her fingers, lips pursed, nose scrunched. The first monsters? Born from stardust…"Why are they here now? Why Townsville?"
Mr. Green shook his head. At the far end of the table, Cicero cleared his throat. Everyone looked up at him, "If I may, Mistress," Blossom nodded and he continued, "The beast made no effort to attack the city itself. When it laid eyes upon Master Boomer and his brothers, it devoted its attention to fighting them. And when you and your sisters appeared, it turned its sights on you."
Blossom resumed twirling Uka's beard around her finger, "That's not odd at all. Monsters used to come from all over the world to challenge the Powerpuff Girls. Why was this one any different?"
"It was a Great Old One! The Sea embodied…" Mr. Green explained, shivering, "No, it didn't come to challenge you, not specifically. The Great Old Ones are gods, the most powerful monsters in all the world. It came to Townsville for a reason…"
"To bring an end to the Age," Uka murmured.
"Does it matter, though?" Darien asked, addressing his skull charm. "This creature stood no chance against the Mistress, nor do the others stand a chance against the Master's might. There are more important matters for us to concern ourselves with," He slammed the skull on the table, earning him a chorus of shushes from around the library. "How do we proceed from here? Did we not come to this place to build a new empire in the name of Lord Aku?"
"That is true! And," Uka chuckled, his voice growing bolder and deeper, "it would seem, we've discovered a new path forward, have we not?"
Blossom grinned, her eyes heating up, "That's right...my sisters know about Aku,"
The others were astounded. The Powerpuff Girls knew that Aku was still alive? They knew about Blossom's...relationship with him? That was…
"Is that not why we stayed our hand so long?!" Cicero exclaimed, earning another shush from the nearby table. "You feared your sisters' wrath, you believed it could jeopardize everything we've worked for!"
Blossom tilted her head, smirking, "I was wrong...they've even seen...me,"
Boomer swallowed. Even he had yet to see Blossom's true form. "And they...are okay with that? They always...but what about…" he blushed several shades of red when Blossom gave him a little shove with her foot, shushing him.
"Don't worry about them. What we need to worry about is taking control now, and spreading the belief in Aku through Townsville," The others nodded; she turned her gaze back to Uka and resumed playing with his beard. "Cicero," The demon general rose to his feet and bowed, "We have a...pig on our side, is that right?"
Cicero chuckled, "The entire pen, my Lady,"
Blossom grinned, her fangs gleaming, "Wonderful...Boomer, let's go. We have a meeting to attend,"

Townsville Prison had undergone countless changes over the years, improving their facilities to accommodate even the most vile of supervillains. Deep beneath the prison, in a specially constructed super cell, Townsville's most infamous criminal sat staring at his television. Locked away from the world, with only local channels to keep him sane, he'd kept up with most of what had happened on the surface.
The Powerpuff Girls' deceased sister was brought back to life. The girls were subsequently kidnapped by them. Upon returning, the Powerpuff Girls spent the month of December suffering from what the media had called the "grumbles." There had been an incident in town. It wasn't until yesterday that he finally saw her.
His beloved nemesis. The girl who'd driven him crazy beyond all reason. Townsville's young, beautiful deity. Blossom had undergone a change and even now, hours later, Mojo couldn't bring himself to think of anything but her. Where once, she'd been cherubic, with a childish charm to her looks, now she was quickly growing into something serious. For all his intellect, all his smarts and vocabulary, he couldn't find a word that did her justice. He felt beautiful was just too ordinary for what Blossom had become.
He longed, now, more than ever, that he could see her again.
He jumped when he heard the doors to his cell opening. He wasn't due a visit from the guards for another forty minutes. He wasn't due for a visit from Boomer for another few days. What then…
Mojo's eyes widened; he walked on stiff legs and pressed his hands against the glass when the last door opened and she walked in. There was no nervousness in her step, like there was before. She held her head high, one hand on her hip and a proud smile on her face. Boomer was close behind her, looking so small next to her.
Blossom glanced over her shoulder at the guard. He nodded, bowed even, and approached Mojo's cell. The supervillain stared at his nemesis, confusion etched across his face. His jaw dropped when the guard opened the last door and gestured for him to leave.
He walked, his body numb, until he stopped in front of her. She was taller than him now.
"What is...the meaning of this?" he asked, turning to glance at the guard, then back at her. Just behind her, he saw Boomer offer him a comforting smile.
"You're dismissed, leave the doors open," Blossom spoke to the guard. Again, he nodded and bowed, then took his leave. As he was going by, Mojo caught sight of a strange tattoo on the guard's neck. He'd never noticed it before, he was certain it was new. Something about the tattoo seemed…
"Mojo," He blinked and looked up at her. She was smiling, but there was a darkness in her eyes. "I wanted to speak to you," Blossom took a seat on the little chair Boomer often sat on and crossed her legs. She rested her chin in her hand, tapping her cheek with her finger. When she smiled again, her nose scrunched, but the look refused to reach her eyes.
"Blossom, I...what is the meaning of this? I'm…" He trailed off. Boomer was standing in the doorway. He'd never seen such a harshness in his favorite son before.
"You're going to answer my questions, then I'm going to decide what I want to do with you," she explained. Mojo started to speak, but one look in her eyes and his throat closed up. He felt a tickle in the back of his throat and could feel his lips trying to move on their own. He clamped them shut and nodded. Blossom narrowed her eyes. Her smile vanished, "What did you do to me,"
"Wh-what…" before he could stop himself, his lips started moving and words came tumbling out, "What do you mean? What is the meaning behind this question you are asking? I do not understand and seek to understand and in understanding can hopefully answer this question you've asked, which currently I cannot as, at this moment, I cannot comprehend the nature of the question you are asking," he swallowed and sighed, his lips twitching. More words wanted to fall out, but he managed to hold them back.
She didn't blink, her expression stayed the same, "You kidnapped me. I finally remembered that. Back in April...and you," She looked down at her hand. Her entire arm suddenly turned black and her fingers transformed into sharp claws. She closed her eyes and when she opened them, they were on fire, "You did something to me. Something that almost killed me. What did you do to me," she repeated, a growl rising in her throat with each word.
Mojo clenched his fists and turned to Boomer. He found himself, again, put off by the harshness in his son's eyes. Taking a long, deep breath, he turned back to Blossom. She deserved to know. If anyone ever deserved to know of his folly, his attempt to play god with a creature he couldn't begin to comprehend, it was her. His rival. His nemesis.
His Blossom.
"I...came to you in the night and stuck you down with my Powerpuff Power Ray gun, making sure to set the setting to remove your powers, as if you retained your powers it would be impossible to contain you, so I made sure to remove your powers, as those powers would be detrimental to what it was I had planned," Mojo sighed and folded his hands behind his back, pacing the length of the cell.
"I kept you submerged in a tank of Antidote-X, to ensure that your powers remained suppressed, as we both discovered, in my previous attempt to eradicate your powers, that your powers cannot be eradicated and left unhindered, will return even when exposed to Antidote-X, and so I had to keep you constantly exposed to Antidote-X, as that was the only way to keep your powers suppressed by ensuring they were to be constantly suppressed," He cleared his throat, "I siphoned Chemical X from you,"
He flinched when her eyes narrowed and the room began to grow colder.
"I...used it to power my greatest creation, my...Devil Jojo. My one greatest creation...a robot more powerful than anything else the world had ever known. A robot whose power surpassed everything that preceded it. It was beautiful...wonderful," His lips settled and his words relaxed. He smiled, thinking about the Devil Jojo, "I meant to use it to finally destroy you, with your own power,"
That seemed right, so far. Blossom touched her forehead, shifting her arm back to its human disguise. There was a splitting pain in her mind, but why? She remembered something else, something far more sinister. Something Mojo hadn't been aware of.
"When I completed my invention, in the span of a single night, I released you. My intention was that you would not know I'd taken you in the middle of the night and so, per my intention, I switched the Powerpuff Power Ray back to Empower, and returned your powers to you with a blast of Chemical X,"
"The Chemical X…" That was it! Her sickness had come from Mojo's attempt to give her back her powers. Instead, he'd introduced a mutation to her that caused her natural Chemical X and his mutation of synthetic Chemical X to begin to tear her apart.
And Aku had been forced to correct that mutation.
The pain in her forehead was getting worse. With a small moan, she cupped her head in both hands and clenched her eyes shut. She felt the other two move and unleashed a wave of frosty air, forcing them both away from her. The pain subsided and Blossom slowly opened her eyes.
"Are you…"
"I'm fine. So...that's what it was. You caused the mutation in me, the sickness that nearly killed me," she muttered.
Mojo's eyes widened and his mouth fell open, "What?! No, I never...that wasn't...I never meant to…" he trailed off. Now, when he needed his words the most, they had abandoned him.
"I'm not angry, not anymore," Blossom explained with a smile, "If you hadn't, I'd never have gone to him. He'd never have wrapped me in black, made me into a devil. Without you, Mojo, I'd still be living a lie, so thank you," She rose from her seat and walked over to him. Mojo tensed up. She giggled and leaned closer, kissing him on the cheek.
Mojo's cheeks heated up instantly.
"Why did you come here," it slipped out before he could stop it.
Blossom gave his cheek a pat, her expression growing dark again, "It's finally time, Mojo. The world is changing, and this time, they can't stop the coming tide of darkness. I want you on my side. Destroying the world, that is easy. I could do that effortlessly," as if to prove her point, Blossom released a small burst of energy, causing the glass of Mojo's cell to shatter.
"No, changing the world is hard. Controlling the world, harder still. Aku will rule over this and every other world. All creatures, all heroes and villains alike, will bow before him and pledge their eternal devotion to him. I'm giving you a choice, Mojo,"
The supervillain looked up at her. The room was freezing, icicles forming along the walls. Her eyes were smoldering pink flames in the darkness. Faintly, he could make out her shadow on the wall, a reflection of her true form.
"Join me, pledge your loyalty to Aku. Build a new world of Evil with us...or…" She lifted her hand and her arm suddenly changed, becoming a sharp black blade. She slammed Mojo against the wall and pressed the edge of the blade against his throat, "Die...and become just another soul in my legion of the dead," She gently kissed his cheek again and lowered her voice, whispering, "I'd rather it not come to that, Mojo."
It was the easiest decision of his life. He quickly nodded, unable to find his voice or any of his words. Blossom slowly smiled and gently set him down. She returned her arm to its human shape.
"I'm glad you see things my way, Mojo. I'll forgive you for what you did to me," He started to nod, but she cut him off. Her eyes narrowed, her nose scrunched and her fangs gleamed as she grinned and snapped her fingers. The wall behind him erupted in flames, a void of darkness tearing through the metal plating. Within it, Mojo could hear screams of anguish and feel an impossible heat. He turned back to Blossom.
"I forgive you. But, he hasn't yet. Now, you answer to Aku, your new master, for your crimes against his queen," Mojo turned away from her, staring back into the void. He glanced at Boomer. His son nodded, mouthing for him to go through the door. With a gulp, Mojo turned and walked into the darkness.

January wasn't a warm month in Townsville, even with the end of the strange blizzard. So, for the tiny room at the back of the Utonium house, the space heater in the corner worked wonders to keep the room nice and cozy. That, and the big pink comforter that the room's inhabitants were currently laying out on.
Blossom laid against Aku, staring at her fingernails, then at her toenails, then looking expectantly up at the demon. They'd sat like that for several minutes now, the eager grin on her face never wavering. He had hoped if he ignored it, she might tell him what was on her mind. Instead she just kept looking at him, as if he was supposed to know why she seemed so excited.
Finally, Aku relented, "Settle your shaking! What is it girl?"
Blossom giggled, lifting one leg into the air. Aku finally noticed the hot pink color across her toenails. He glanced down and noticed that her fingernails now shared the same shade.
"Do you like it? Ms. Keane helped me, I've never had nails to paint before! Does it look alright? Do you like it?" Aku slipped his hand around hers and kissed her fingers. He laid back and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair.
"They look lovely, Blossom." After a moment, he sighed, "Is that truly what has you so excited? The prospect of decorating a new piece of yourself?" He grinned when she giggled with excitement.
Blossom snuggled against him, kissing his chin, "Of course, I'm excited! I just...I can't get over this, you have no idea how long I've wanted this. How long I've wanted to be beautiful. And now, look at me! I'm..." she laughed softly, "My body still isn't caught up with my mind, but it's closer now, right? You think I'm…"
Aku pulled away from her, tilting her chin back with a tap of his finger. The amorous grin that had been on his face melted away, into something pure and sincere, "Blossom, you've always been beautiful." Her cheeks lit up, she blushed so easily. Aku grinned and kissed her little nose. "You always find new ways to show Aku your beauty, be it these cute little fingers, this adorable little nose, or your pretty new toes, but," He caressed her face, brushing her hair behind her ear.
Blossom slid closer to him, he slid his arm around her and the two shared another kiss. When they parted, it took him a moment to remember his train of thought, "You will always be beautiful to Aku, in this form and any other,"
She bit her lip, running her fingers across his chest. Her heart felt so...full, so ready to overflow. She looked back up into his fiery red eyes. The way he looked at her, it drove her crazy. It was different from anyone else. Boomer looked at her like a big sister, Sedusa looked at her like a goddess. But, when Aku looked at her...he seemed to be the only one who really saw who she was. He was the only one who saw the real Blossom.
Her horns slid through her hair and her tentacles slid out of her night gown. Blossom leaned into his arms and pressed her lips against his. Her breath was always so cold, and his so hot. When their mouths met, it was a delicious dance of fire and ice with every breath. His hand slid into her hair, his thumb caressing the base of her horns. Blossom shivered and dug her claws into his shoulders.
"I don't deserve you," Blossom whispered. She quivered under his touch, her insides swimming in ecstasy when he kissed her again. His tendrils wrapped around hers, the writhing appendages intertwining to bring them even closer together.
He shushed her, tracing her lips with his finger, "We deserve each other. Blossom and Aku," Lips parted from his touch, her breaths coming in thin gasps, she kissed his finger and buried herself in his warm embrace.
