Dreams of an Absolution
Chapter 49
The young girl hummed quietly to herself as she strolled down the long hallway, running her fingers along the cool metal wall. Her bright pink eyes glanced back and forth, the smile on her lips growing a bit every time she caught sight of her reflection. She paused next to a mirror and stared at herself, brushing her hair back behind her ears and adjusting her big red bow. She paused and her eyes lit up a little. Peeking through the two-way mirror, she gave the intern watching her a wink and a grin.
With a giggle, she resumed her long trek to the meeting room. They were waiting for her, they had been waiting for her. Her new, perfect body was both a blessing and a curse. She was vastly more beautiful than before, but not it took a little longer to get ready in the morning. She didn't mind, she was enjoying the variety. With a sigh, she slid to a slow walk as the door came into sight. She paused to adjust the straps on her sandals and fix her dress one last time before stepping inside.
Like she expected, they were waiting for her. She couldn't help smiling.
"I'm sorry, did I keep you waiting?" she asked, her knowing smile unwavering.
The man at the end of the desk, General Adkinson of the Meta-Human Regulation Department, glared at her, rising from his seat and pressing his palms against the table. His knuckles were still white from clenching his fists, "You're nearly an hour late, do you think this is a game, Miss Utonium?" he spoke in a low bark.
Her smile became a grin, "Of course not, Sir." He nodded and began to sit down. He clenched his fists and glared when she added, "Games are usually fun,"
Her sisters couldn't help staring at her incredulously when Blossom took her seat, the one furthest from the general. Her sisters were sitting to her right, Bubbles looking sick, Buttercup near panicked. On her left was Dexter, her coordinating officer. Normally, he came across as arrogant and condescending. Today, he looked paler than normal.
The general cleared his throat and placed his hands on his lap, probably to keep her from seeing the way he cracked his knuckles. Her smile grew a little dangerous when they made eye contact.
"Why am I here, Miss Utonium?" the general asked. To his left was Major Glory, the star-spangled superhero representative to the Department of Regulation. He was in full costume, like usual, though Blossom was well aware of the way he stood at attention. He couldn't relax, not with the way she was smiling at him now.
Blossom crossed her legs and tapped her lip, finally freeing the soldiers of her stare. From the corner of her eye, she noticed them both relax, "If I may be honest, Sir, I'm not entirely sure myself. On one hand," Blossom gestured and she had to resist giggling when the armed guards around the room suddenly tensed up and reached for their weapons, "It would make sense if you were here to check on your three star superheroines after they were kidnapped. But, you've had a month to do that, so I'm guessing you don't care much,"
"On the other," This time, when she put her hands on her lap and narrowed her eyes, she heard several weapons suddenly point in her direction, "Normally, we'd just meet at our home. You must have a reason for all this," she waved her hand at the guards. She had to giggle when one of them flinched away from her.
The general rose from his seat and motioned for the guards to relax. He cleared his throat and glanced at Major Glory. With a nod, he began, "A week ago, there was an incident in Townsville. Does that ring any bells?"
Blossom pursed her lips and glanced at her sisters, feigning confusion. Bubbles sat wide-eyed, her mouth hanging open. Buttercup glared at her, teeth clenched, mitts clutching at the table so tight they were leaving dents in the steel.
"You know exactly what I mean!" The general shouted, slamming his hand on the table. When Blossom merely shrugged, he growled, "The explosion! The entire western coast of Townsville was decimated by what Major Dexter tells me was an eruption of energy so immense, it makes the AN602 test look like a cheap firecracker!"
Blossom hadn't looked away from her sisters. Bubbles looked downright miserable, she half-expected her to throw up any minute. And Buttercup seemed like she was on the verge of screaming. They weren't ready for this. They'd gotten better over the last month, but they weren't ready to listen to this man yell. Not yet, anyway. Clearing her throat, Blossom turned back to the general. The smile finally left her lips.
"General, if it's all the same to you, I'd like to ask Major Dexter to escort my sisters from our meeting," When Buttercup started to speak up, Blossom silenced her with a wave of her finger, "They're still not at one hundred percent after our detainment and torture a month ago. As the leader of the Powerpuff Girls, they'll be fine if I speak with you on behalf of our group,"
"Out of the question. I want answers, and no one is leaving this room until I have them," he barked, slamming his fists against the table again.
Blossom set her hands on the table and rose to her feet. Every gun trained on her, and Major Glory brought up his fists, a sheen of sweat breaking out across his brow. Dexter also rose from his seat, reaching for the device on his wrist. He froze when Blossom threw a glance at him from the corner of her eye.
"General, I think there's been a misunderstanding. My sisters are leaving, and Major Dexter will be escorting them back to our father," she spoke, staring unblinking into the general's eyes.
His lips curled back and his brow furrowed. He flinched when a bead of sweat slipped down his temple. With a low growl, he nodded to Dexter, who quickly shot from his seat and motioned for Bubbles and Buttercup to go with him. Buttercup paused, grabbing Blossom's hand before going. Blossom gave her hand a squeeze and offered her a sincere smile.
"It'll be alright, I'll see you soon. Okay?" she assured her. Normally, Buttercup would have hated the way Blossom spoke to her. Maybe it was the difference in height, now Blossom stood about a head taller than her sisters, or maybe it was the new confidence that the redhead practically radiated. Whatever it was, Buttercup only smiled and nodded, hurrying after Dexter.
When the door slid shut, Blossom slid back in her seat, smoothing her dress and crossing her legs before smiling up at the general.
"Thank you, Sir. Now...what were we talking about before?" The knowing, playful smile on Blossom's lips only further irritated the already furious soldier.
The general cleared his throat, speaking in a dry voice, "The explosion at the pier. I know it was you. Major Dexter and your father have both confirmed the energy signature was yours. Now look at you...what do you think you're doing?"
That irritating smile grew a bit broader, "I'm just sitting here, General. You're the one who called me here,"
"We had an understanding, Miss Utonium. If it weren't for your father's passionate plea that you had changed, that you would be on your best behavior, I'd have had you locked away in a prison in Siberia, where no one would even remember you existed. Or better, we'd have broken you back down into whatever garbage he made you from. You are on thin ice, and you constantly push me. It ends now." Through his rant, the general had noticed a distinct rise in the temperature of the room. When he finished, he noticed the way her eyes had narrowed. He gestured and the guards got closer, barrels of their guns level with her head.
Blossom glanced over her shoulder at them and pinched the bridge of her nose, "And just what, if I might ask, do you plan to do, General?"
"We're taking your powers. No more of this game, Blossom,"
One of the soldiers swallowed, tightening his hold on his gun. He began to sweat, his fingers began to twitch. With a scream, he dropped his weapon. The others quickly followed, the barrels turned to smelt before they hit the ground. Major Glory started toward her, but with a simple glare, Blossom froze him in his tracks.
Slowly, she rose from the table, placing her hands flat against the cool surface. It was quickly heating up. The heat was radiating from Blossom's now glowing skin. When the general made a grab for his radio, Blossom wagged her finger.
"Ah, ah...General, do you remember what you said before? You said that the explosion at the pier made the AN406, the largest nuclear explosion mankind has ever successfully detonated, if I remember correctly. You said the explosion at the pier made that look like a firecracker," Blossom slowly smirked and narrowed her eyes, "You asked what that was? General, for all intents and purposes, that was a sneeze for me. What in the world do you plan to do against someone with that kind of power?"
"You...wh-what are you saying…" Major Glory asked, speaking suddenly.
Blossom chuckled and stood up straight. She glared at the soldiers on either side of her and they quickly backed away. Satisfied, she nodded and returned her stare to the general, "I agree, this is the end, General."
"We...we had an agreement. You...your father said…" the general mumbled.
"My father lied to you," Blossom cooed, "He told you there was a way to control me, but he's known from the beginning that was impossible. He tried once before, General. Why do you think those bracelets exist? He tried to contain my power, and he failed. He underestimated me once, and Townsville paid for it. Now, you want to underestimate me again, but this time...this time the stakes are so much higher,"
Major Glory growled and marched toward her. He towered over her, but within seconds he wilted away from the force behind her stare. The super soldier lowered his head in shame. The general clenched his teeth and gripped the edge of the table.
"What do you want?" he finally hissed through his teeth.
This time, there wasn't a smile on her face, "I want your cooperation. I'll stay on my best behavior, but I want you to help me find someone. Dick Hardley, a college drop-out who ran the Powerpuff Girls Xtreme business a year ago,"
"What?" The general glanced at Major Glory, then back to Blossom, "That hack died when his factory burnt down. That's what I was told,"
"Oh I know, I was there. And I thought the same thing until a month ago. He was the one," Blossom's fists clenched and a wave of energy washed over the room, driving everyone back from the heat, "He flooded Townsville with nanobots to control people and start the riots. He brought my sister back to life. He captured my sisters and me. He tried to control us. And he killed my little sister. Now, I want you to help me find him,"
The general wiped the sweat from his brow and turned around, folding his hands behind his back, "So it was Hardley...but, what is his plan? What does he want, revenge?"
"He thinks he's a god. He wants to destroy this world and make a new one," Blossom explained. The general laughed, in spite of himself and turned to her.
"I've heard that before,"
Blossom narrowed her eyes, "You're right," Her glare faded and she shrugged. Blossom wandered to the back wall and traced her fingers along the metal. It melted where she touched, like a hot knife through butter. "You heard it from a little girl drunk on freedom, but, General," she turned back to him and put her hands on her hips.
"Now, that little girl has grown up...and she's more powerful than she ever was before. Now, you have two options." Blossom stormed passed the soldiers. To his credit, the general only flinched, but didn't back away when she stopped in front of him. Blossom's skin settled and the heat around her faded away.
"You can be her ally, or you can be her enemy," Blossom floated up until she was eye level with the general. She leaned close to him, slipping her hand around his collar and gripping it tight. She pressed her lips close to his ear and whispered, "Can I let you in on a secret?" she licked her lips and grinned when the general shuddered, "You really don't want to be her enemy."
Blossom dropped back to the ground and crossed her arms, walking to the door. She paused, staring at her reflection. With a smile, she ran her fingers through her hair.
The general took that moment to finally ask her, "What are you planning?"
Without looking up, Blossom responded, "I don't think you want to play that game, General,"
"A...game," he mumbled, the color drained from his face.
Blossom glanced up at him, "That's the other thing you need to learn about games, General. They're usually fun," Blossom's eyes lit up like flames and a dangerous grin spread across her lips, "And I always win,"

Several days had passed since the emergency meeting with the director of the Department of Meta-Human Regulations. Even longer had passed since the last time Townsville saw the three-colored pastel rainbow racing across the sky to save the day.
No, in the absence of the Powerpuff Girls, Townsville had found new protectors in the form of the Rowdyruff Boys. Once supervillains, the boys had been mostly reformed into heroes thanks to the hard fought efforts of both Agent Honeydew and the Townsville Board of Education. While they still had much to learn, the boys had come to enjoy protecting the people of Townsville. It was one thing to be feared, another to be admired.
It was supposed to be a routine pass through the city. Just another scan for a robbery or some other petty crime. But, when Boomer paused by the pier, he had to take a moment to wander through the destruction his friend had caused.
Once, it was a bustling port for ships coming to and fro. Ships bringing goods, fishermen going out to try their luck at catching one of the legendary monster fish that inhabited the waters between Townsville and Monster Island, and young couples looking for a romantic cruise. The pier was a wonderful, fun place. Boomer had always enjoyed coming to just look at the water and relax.
Now, there was a crater wider than he could measure. Standing at one end, he couldn't see the other without straining his eyes. It was like a chunk of Townsville had simply given up and collapsed into the ocean.
Boomer bit his lip thinking back to Christmas morning, when he'd been one of the first to arrive at the scene. Buttercup had beat him there, but once he arrived he didn't bother to keep track of anyone else coming or going. There were screams, there were always screams. The people of Townsville loved to scream. But he couldn't bring himself to even make a sound, looking down into the glowing crater she'd left behind.
Aku was down there with her, in a hastily thrown together Baku disguise. His skin was melted and torn up, his horns, gone. One of his eyes was blackened, the other cut clear across the center. His teeth were cracked and his fingernails were gone. He seemed to be in pain, but wouldn't let anyone close to him. He wouldn't loose his grip on the precious bundle in his arms.
Boomer shivered, remembering the first time he saw her. His face turned bright red and he began to laugh sheepishly. She'd been naked. He'd seen Blossom naked.
He sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets. The harsh winter went away that night. By the next morning, most of the snow was gone. She'd finally managed to relax. She'd finally settled whatever it was going crazy inside her.
He was happy for her.
"Hm?" Boomer blinked and looked up, spotting something in the distance. Some kind of disturbance in the water. He bit his lip and flew into the air to get a better look. Something was coming toward Townsville.
A monster? The city hadn't been attacked by a monster since...actually, he couldn't remember the last monster attack. They all seemed to avoid the town after what happened last year. As the surge in the sea got closer, Boomer narrowed his eyes.
It was definitely a monster.
"Hey guys!" He called over his shoulder. He began to float backward; he swallowed a lump in his throat. It wasn't slowing down.
He'd never fought a monster before.
"Guys?!" he called again.
The monster was getting closer. It was moving faster!
With a nervous groan, Boomer looked around anxiously. They had to have heard him. Taking a deep breath, he screamed at the top of his lungs, "GUYS!"
Just like that, two rays of red and green appeared at his side.
"What is it?! Geez you yell like a…" Brick trailed off. The water's surface exploded and a massive shape rose up so high it blocked out the sun overhead.
It was a serpent, bigger than any other monster that had dared show its face in Townsville. It was covered in dark scales, their color shifting from blue to green at different angles, with a set of massive spikes trailing from its head down the length of its body. It's mouth, easily large enough to take a bite out of a skyscraper, was lined with rows of teeth, each bigger than the Rowdyruff Boys themselves. There were two, sharp whiskers growing from the corners of its mouth, and its eyes were like twin pools of green venom, gleaming in the afternoon sunlight.
"Miserable creatures, face the wrath of one whose birth transcends the dawn of Time itself," The voice seemed to echo from all around them, like a gravely rumble. It shook the air with enough force to very nearly drive Townsville's protectors from the sky.
Brick recovered and thrust his mitt out at the monster, "Less talk, more rock! Let's get him!" The boys launched at the monster, flying at full speed for his face. With an intake of air like a tornado, the monster roared, spraying a jet of water at the oncoming trio, blasting them into the pavement below.
Butch was the first to recover, snarling as his face started to twitch. He hurled himself at the monster again, just to be batted aside by it's massive tail.
"Hey! Nobody hits my brother but me! Eat this!" Brick pulled himself out of the ground and fired his heat rays at the creature. With another sharp intake of air, it belched another jet of water out, dousing the heat rays and slamming their owner back into the ground.
Boomer flew from his crater and managed to land an explosive kick against the monster's side. He pulled his leg back, eyes bulging, and held his ankle.
"Ow! Ow! Ow! Too tough!" he cried. He was quickly swatted out of the air, joining his brothers once more on the pavement.
Brick snarled, his face turning red. They were the Rowdyruff Boys! The toughest, baddest, strongest superheroes in the whole city! They weren't about to get wrecked by some water worm! With a scream, he launched into the air, his brothers close behind.
"What do we do, Brick?" Butch asked, hitting his fists together. He seemed as agitated as the leader. Boomer was still rubbing his head and muttering to himself.
With a snarl, Brick cried, "Ballistic Barrage! Beat this sucker up!" Boomer snapped out of his whining and the three lunged at the monster, moving around in an unpredictable pattern to avoid it's swats and jet blasts. Then, with one last jump, they charged the monster and unleashed their full strength along it's body.
The first punch caused Brick's eyes to bulge and a cry of pain to catch in his throat. But, he wasn't about to be the wuss who gave up after one hit, so he kept punching. The three kept up their assault until the monster roared and blew them back with another jet attack.
None of them wanted to be the first to cry out in pain. Brick sat up, eyes still bulging, jaw clenched as tight as he could muster. Butch stared at his beat red, bruised hands and fought to control the way his face wanted to twitch. Boomer had shoved both fists in his mouth and was struggling to hold back a scream of pain.
To make matters worse, people were starting to gather to watch. Townsville wasn't known for it's smart citizens. Most had started taking pictures of the sea serpent. A monster attack was the kind of normalcy they had been missing!
"I'm here at the scene, where the Rowdyruff Boys have, thus far, been unable to make a dent in the vicious sea monster!" Brick snarled when he heard the news anchor ramble into the camera about how they were losing. With a snarl, he shot into the air, biting back the tears of pain in the corners of his eyes.
"Big Beam Attack!" He shouted. His brothers shot into the air and the three joined hands, spinning around until they became a glowing ball of swirling red, green, and blue light. With a joint scream, they unleashed a massive ray of light at the monster's face. It took a sharp intake of air and belched a jet of water directly at the beam.
The two forces struggled, pushing against one another to decide the fate of Townsville. With one last scream of effort, the Big Beam Attack overwhelmed the water jet and slammed into the monster's face.
The Rowdyruff Boys separated, winded and celebrating.
"Alright! We did it! Stupid worm!" Brick laughed, throwing Butch a high five. They both nearly screamed in pain, cradling their still injured hands. Boomer stared in horror, slowly pointing.
"Uh, dudes," The boys looked up, just to hear a roar and get slammed into the ground by another water jet. The monster reared up, it's tail knocking aside a building as it hovered over the fallen Rowdyruff Boys.
Suddenly, a glint of light shown in the distance. The monster looked up, roaring in pain when an explosion of energy collided with it's head and sent it flying back into the water. The people who had gathered to watch gasped. Then, one by one, they began to cheer. The three-colored, pastel rainbow they'd longed for shot across the sky and three familiar figures landed next to their fallen comrades.
"It's them!" the news caster gasped.
Blossom walked toward the water, arms crossed, sizing up the serpent as it shot from the water and roared at her. She was impressed, she had hoped that blast would take it's head off entirely. Blossom couldn't help smirking.
She was ready for a real fight.
"Alright girls, let's show the boys how you take care of a monster!" she called. Buttercup hurried to her side, practically bouncing with excitement. Bubbles took a moment to apologize to the boys and offer them a sheepish grin, then appeared on Blossom's other side.
"Alright Leader Girl," Buttercup's smile grew as she said the words. She was almost shaking with excitement, bouncing from one foot to the other, "What's the plan?"
Blossom had to admit, her heartbeat raced when she heard those words, "It's tough, the boys couldn't even dent it. And it…scatter!" The girls quickly flew into the air, avoiding a jet of water from the beast. They regrouped in the air, Blossom narrowing her eyes, "It can fire a jet of water from it's mouth," she looked down at the ditch dug through the pavement, "a powerful jet," she corrected herself.
"I have awakened. The Age is at last at an end. You are nothing before me," the creature snarled, it's voice shaking the air around the Powerpuff Girls.
"What did that mean?" Bubbles asked, holding her head.
Blossom narrowed her eyes. She wasn't sure, but she knew who she was going to ask later. The girls scattered again when it fired another water jet their way. Blossom shot to Bubbles' side, moving so fast her sister gasped when she appeared.
"Buttercup! Use the Megaton Dunk! Bubbles, Fastball Special!" she cried.
Buttercup shot toward the monster, dunking in and out of it's attacks. When she got close to it, she shot straight into the air, spiraling around the monster's continuous blasts. Meanwhile, the other two quickly dropped to the ground. Bubbles rolled herself into a ball, grunting when Blossom grabbed her leg a little harder than she expected.
Blossom slid her foot forward and pulled her arm back. The air around her snapped and the ground beneath her foot shattered when she thrust her arm forward, hurling Bubbles with so much force, she could hear her sister start to scream. Blossom blushed and ran her hand through her hair, biting her tongue nervously.
"Oops...that might have been a bit much," she muttered. Bubbles collided with the monster's stomach, the force sending a shockwave across the water. The monster's eyes bulged and it doubled over. Bubbles bounced back, so fast that she ended up falling into Blossom's arms.
"Ow! Ow! Ow! That hurt! Not so hard next time!" Bubbles whimpered, holding her head. Blossom laughed sheepishly again.
"Sorry!" The two looked up, hearing the sound of a sonic boom snap in the sky above them. A green comet came streaking out of the clouds and slammed into the monster's head, driving it down into the water. The green speck bounced off and came bouncing toward them. Blossom and Bubbles watch Buttercup skid to a halt, holding her arm.
"OH MAN! OH GEEZ! OH...OH SHIT!" Buttercup screamed. Her sisters helped her to her feet. Buttercup stared at her arm, still hissing in pain. "What is that thing made of?! That hurt worse than that...that giant fish balloon!" She cried, crumpling over and holding her arm, bouncing in place.
Bubbles nodded, still rubbing her head, tears in the corners of her eyes.
"Yeah! It's super tough...do you think we-" she sighed when the monster rose up from the water. It seemed dizzy, for sure, but otherwise unharmed. "I guess not," Bubbles mumbled.
Blossom caught site of the spot where Bubbles had collided. The scales were noticeably cracked. If someone hit it with enough force...or if they had a giant drill.
Blossom snapped her fingers, pausing for a moment to giggle at the novelty, then grinned, "I've got it! We're gonna to use the Spincicle Maneuver!"
Still holding her head, Bubbles glanced at Buttercup. The green-eyed puff seemed just as confused. Buttercup groaned, "Spincicle? Are you making that up?"
"Yes I am!" Blossom exclaimed, pulling Buttercup out of the path of a dizzy water jet, "I'll get it's attention, when it tries its water attack, I'll use my Ice Breath to freeze it from the inside. You two use the Sonic Screwdriver and attack the weak point Bubbles made on its belly," She pointed out the spot in question. Bubbles winced and giggled.
"I helped! Yay!"
Buttercup nodded, shaking her still sore arm and taking a deep breath, "Alright, let's do this,"
Bubbles nodded, "Right!"
Blossom stepped in front of her sisters, spreading her feet, digging her back foot into the ground, "Alright, on my mark," The monster reared back and roared. Then, she heard the sharp intake of air, "And…" It lunged at her, firing it's water jet, "Now!" Blossom took a deep breath herself and unleashed her Ice Breath. It quickly froze the water jet the moment they touched, and spread deep inside the monster.
Already, she could hear it roaring in surprise. She felt a rush of wind beside her and glanced up. Twin streaks of blue and green collided and began to spin together. She hated to admit it, but her sisters had really taken that move and made it their own. Part of her was jealous, the other part couldn't be more proud. The swirling screwdriver shot through the air and collided with the weak spot.
The monster began to scream and struggle. Blossom blew harder, further freezing its insides. A high pitched squeal filled the air and, with one last push, the drill shot through the serpent and out the other side.
Blossom caught her breath and sighed, putting her hands on her hips. Her smile only grew bigger, prouder, when her sisters appeared beside her.
"It worked!"
"We did it!"
"The Powerpuff Girls!" The girls looked up, hearing a cheer and seeing the crowd approach them. "You came back!" The news reporter exclaimed. The Rowdyruff Boys had wandered over to the girls. Brick and Blossom made eye contact. He looked furious; her smile became a grin.
She turned to the camera and threw out a V for Victory gesture, "That's right! And remember, Townsville, accept no substitutes, just the one, and only, Powerpuff Girls!" The crowd cheered and Blossom flashed Brick another mean grin.
Her sisters didn't seem to notice, already caught up in the cheers and celebration. Butch, however, did. He joined Brick in glaring at her. Behind them, Boomer blushed and smiled. Blossom only laughed, throwing him a wink and turning back to answer the news reporter's slew of questions.
It had been much too long.
It was good to be back.
